00:00 I saw this in theaters with a friend. The one thing that scared me was the ending. The bear thing. And because the music drowned it out...I wasn't horrified til after. I'm already scared of burning deaths and felt awful learning that they lied about the yew "feel no pain" tip and now now one knows it doesn't work because they burn to death and can't tell anyone so it just keeps happening. but I learned after that while paralyzed Christian is absolutely screaming is head off as he's boiled by the bear fat, and he can't even open his mouth so it's just this continuous rough sound and fuck why am i watching this at night -- anyway i learned through a youtube video that disappeared later, of "Midsommar ending, no music (DISTURBING)" . So in the moment I was just deaf to the horror, and when she smiled at the end I was like "well, good for her, finding somewhere to belong"

Ritual and ceremonies are not the same. Ritual might be a ceremony but not a the other way around. Isn't baptism a ritual and a ceremony, but exorcism is a ritual but not a ceremony. A wedding were there is no ordained( another ritual) Priest might just be ceremony. All ritual have supernatural power but ceremony seems to have only social power.

Nice reaction. This movie is one of my favorites. I usually cant watch horror movies but this one is so focused on the mood and slow-buildup of tension over time that it just works so well and is truly mesmerizing to me. One interpretation I have of the movie is that all the occult stuff that we see happen is just the way the family deals with their intense grief and despair. They have lost their community, then they lose their youngest child and the crops they sow go bad. Caleb's madness and sickness is caused by him being lost in the woods for so long and his guilt over the dog dying. The witch in the shed with the children is just a nightmare that causes the small children to panic and run away in the night. Thomasin joining the witches at the end is her mind breaking under these tragic events and he wandering off into the woods to die alone. The interactions within the family and the portrayal of the immense challenges that a family would face settling in a new land during these times is what truly cements this as one of my favorites.
