A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
Director: Ari Aster
Writer: Ari Aster
Stars: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Vilhelm Blomgren

This movie was an absolutely bloody (pun most definitely intended) experience! Ari Aster smashed this movie, I thought it was brilliant from start to end. The way this movie made me feel so uncomfortable, I don't think I've seen another movie that's left me feeling this unsettled before. The soundtrack was great for this movie as well, perfectly complimenting that disconcerting culty vibe. I hope you enjoy the video! 😊

As a swede I can confirm this is an average midsummers celebration, cult and all (also Dans swedish is clearly flawless)
I was wondering if maybe I could come over and midsummer with you this year? I'm particularly keen for a 9 day feast if we can make that happen too, I'll settle for some skin the fool if not though!
@@JackWillReact Im sure we can sort something out
😂😂😂
Skål! 🍻
One of these reactions comments on Midsommar I read was by a Swede who said he was quite offended by the film and that it was totally fantastical. And, that the landscape didn't even look like Sweden. Indeed, it was filmed in Hungary.
I think the first thing that gave me a vibe of foreshadowing pretty heavily was that the guy says welcome to everyone except Danny. To her he says welcome HOME.
It was planned from the start! 😳
@@AChickandaDuckOh yeah, they go out, learn about the world, and then bring back potential partners to join the cult...but every ninety years it gets a bit more fun, they get to pic a pot. part. AND choose people to sacrifice!
The first time I watched this movie in theaters, I felt so unsettled leaving the theater, but years later now, I think this movie is quite thought provoking. The exploration of Dani’s trauma and how that leads her to embracing the cult who finally makes her feel seen…just so great. It mirrors real life situations where cults prey on people who are emotionally distraught or in need of a community, which makes Dani’s smile at the end all the more tragic.
I have watched this movie several times and I never thought of it from that perspective. Holy buckets! That's how they get you!😮
@@user-nt8lq4rp3z That’s why that scene after Dani sees Christian through the keyhole is so important. When Dani runs away and cries, the women mirror back her sadness and anguish while holding her. She finally has a group of people that share in her pain and take care of her and though these people are insidious murderers, it’s easy for me to see why Dani didn’t choose to fight and leave. They’ve essentially trapped her :(
I bet it must have been great to see this movie in the cinema! I think i need to watch this a couple more times because i'm certain there are things i most definitely missed that'll i'll pick up the second time around. While i was editing the video i noticed early in the movie when we see Dani's parents in bed, beside her mum is a photo of Dani with a flower crown around the picture frame. I thought this was really cool foreshadowing, and a potential theory that perhaps Pelle had a hand in the trauma that in turn brought her to Hälsingland. Probably just coincidental though!
@@JackWillReact That’s actually a very popular theory! That he might have something to do with her parents death to make it more likely that she would join the cult-I definitely wouldn’t put it past him seeing how easy it was for him to let his family kill all his friends lol
I grew up in a cult and it’s so accurate
Not poor Jack trying to be all optimistic about everything in the beginning 😅 and Dan pretty much had it all figured out. As always you two never fail to make me laugh.
Pelle’s parents died in a fire, quite possibly the same kind of fire that killed the characters in this film - which explain how the cult got and raised him.
This film’s broadly about how cults work and how they take in and take advantage of the isolated and traumatized.
As someone who has struggled with their mental health and has had intrusive, unaliving thoughts, that opening was TRIGGERING. (I am doing better now)…but-PSA: if you think someone is considering taking their life, always call 911 or help get them support, even if you’re not 100% sure-it could save someone’s life.
Wellness checks are a thing for a reason.
Christian’s drink was a different colour than the others because of the special ingredient - danger blood 😉
Yup 😫
Oooh, a nice danger blood cocktail 😭
As a swede I honestly love this film, cause even though it's more of a horror comedy, it's very well researched.
The painting over Dani's bed isn't just foreshadowing, a blonde girl and a bear as you noted on, it's also made by classical artist John Bauer and something every Swede would recognise. He made a lot of folklore art.
The music, clothes, art, is very similar to our folk culture, not complete copies (except for some songs they play), but very very similar.
Ättestupa was mentioned in viking texts, basically if you lived long enough to be a burden you could throw yourself over a cliff and still have an honourable death. Ättestupa literally translates to Heritage Cliff.
Likewise, the blood eagle is also from viking times. They'd open up your spine and pull your lungs out while you're still alive.
The dancing around the maypole is traditional and something we do every summer, but the dance until you drop is from the folk song Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young dance until they die. This is also where the commune got its name, Hårga.
Putting the scissors in the baby's cot is because it was believed that iron wards off fairy folk who would want to steal away the baby. Traditionally, scissors, shears, or an iron nail was therefor placed in the baby's bed.
There's a spot where young women walk backwards picking flowers, this is from the superstition that if you pick 7 flowers and put them under your pillow on midsummer eve, you will dream about who you will marry.
Honestly, the least authentic part of this film is the nature around the commune, it wasn't filmed in Sweden and it shows.
😂 u noticed, This is something I can't help pointing out watching films as well
A horror comedy? 😎
@@lifewriter7455 for a Swede, yes
1:00:42 "This is getting cultier by the second." 😂 You're very tolerant to say that so late into the movie.
Dan coming in with that God of War knowledge👌🏻😂
He's actually playing it at the moment i think, so it's gotta be fresh knowledge 😂
Another great reaction video! Loved the outtake at the end. 12/10. Also, Get Dan a better chair! My back hurts just watching him.
Glad you liked the video mate! I suppose the pillow doesn't make much of a difference 😅
Fun Fact: The entire chain of events of the movie is on the tapestry at the beginning when they first arrive.
Seeing this the very first time in a mostly empty theater was such an experience. I think I was the only girl, and when we got to the scene with Christian and Maia, I remember how we all burst into nervous laughter.
This movie continues to haunt me as I realize every time just how much Aster tells and shows us and then just carries through with the promises.
I’d LOVE to see your reaction to his third in this “tryptich of family grief”- Beau is Afraid
I just want to say, I've seen many reactions to this film, and you guys added commentary and editing I've never seen before that made me laugh so much and it was such a fun watch! Well done boys! Cant wait to see what else you guys react to next 👏❤
That's such a kind comment, really glad to hear that you enjoyed the movie mate 😊 Glad to have you here!
just got back from the gym and I saw this video dropped, perfect dinner time entertainment!
Well done on getting that workout in! I hope you enjoy the video! 😊
@@JackWillReact got me all ✋😄🤚 by the end!
Another great reaction, guys! Props to Dan for knowing the basics of the Ymir legend (the norse creation myth is much weirder than the little he said lol) and the Blood Eagle. Can't wait to see where you go next. Still waiting for The Exorcist!
Thanks mate, appreciate you stopping by again! 😊I need to read up on some of these Norse myths, they sound so interesting. The Exorcist will definitely happen at some point, that's a guarantee!
@@JackWillReact norse myths are great, because they are so strange. A cosmic cow fed Ymir her milk and birthed the first gods (Odin's grandpa and greatuncles) by licking away at a block of salty ice. There also a lot of male gods dressing up as women for various reasons, a goddess picking her husband by only seeing his feet, and Loki turning into a female horse to seduce a magic stallion to cheat a giant out of his pay lol. Norse mythology is great lol. Can't wait for the next reaction!
absolutely i agree!! good job guys an keeo these movie reaction videos coming!! i cant stop laughing!!!
The hand waving support from you guys during the may queen dance hand me cackling 👋🏼✋🏼👋🏼✋🏼👋🏼✋🏼
The sports commentary for the may queen dance off is top notch.
Aww you guys didn’t notice when Christian found the pube in his food that everyone’s drinks in their cups was yellow but Christian’s drink was orange. Because of that “love story” painting, where the woman used her period blood in a drink to make the man love her
Ah yes... Traditional ruffie. 🤢
The whole crew was picked bc they were potential candidates to join, but only Dani proved to be the best fit. which paired well with Pele being ready to take a wife. Honestly the entire structure of it is freaking fascinating, I'm pretty sure the woman who 'helped' maja during 'the ceremony' was pele and maja's mother asdf
You are the first reacors i subscribed to. I loved your Midsommar, Heredetary, Exorcist and Witch reaction. You two have a great sence of Humor and cool predictions or thoughts. I would love to see more reactions from you in the Future. Some suggestions: Evil Dead (Remake), Evil Dead Rise, Maniac (Remake), Martyrs (Original), SAW, Seven, Sinister 1+2 or Blair Witch Project. All of them are great Movies.
p.s. Keep up the good work and i hope u two get more attention soon.
Not sure if you guys picked up on the significance of the "love tapestry" they walked past early in the movie, in relation to Christian's pie/drink, but there's a reason his drink was darker than everyone else's 😆I somehow *knew* Jack would switch from commune to cult during the funniest sex scene in cinema history.
I'd been waiting for this one ever since Hereditary - Ari doesn't miss with the creepy cult business!
To be fair to Dan he did theorise this but i had to cut so much out to get the video as close to 1 hour as i could and unfortunately this was something that was cut. In hindsight it was a great deduction from Dan and i should have left it in!
Ari certainly doesn't miss with the cult stuff, he's almost too good, very suspicious if you ask me 👀
The end shot of Dani is the same kind of insanity you got from Pearl grinning and losing her mind at the end of "Pearl".
Also, the pube pie and period blood lemonade would have made me climb into a burning bear willingly.
Alright dinner time...right?" kills me everytime lol
Remember the painting of the bear and the blonde girl in the beginning? It's a traditional piece of art by John Bauer called "Stackars lilla basse", in english, "Poor little creature" and it's an atr piece from a book with collected fairytales called "Bland tomtar och troll" (among gnomes and trolls) in 1912 and specificly for the fairytale called "Oskuldens vandring" or "the wandering of innocence" by Helena Nyblom .
The art piece shows the 4 year old princess Bella (remember Dani and Chris were together for 4 years) and the princess meet the bear in the forest. Bella feeds the bear raspberries and asks the bear "Isn't it very hot in the summer heat to wear such thick fur?"
And yes, it sure was hot for Chris🔥 and Dani did the same as Bella, caring for the bear not her own safety.
Bella then calls the bear "poor creature" and kiss the nose of the bear.
Bella is a character without any relations to anyone else in these fairytales. There is never any mention of her family so she is alone.
Just like Dani.
“Is that Josh? They’ve planted Josh?!” 🌱 😂
What a great thing to wake up to, happy to see you guys. Another fun watch
Glad to have you back mate, hope you enjoy the video! 😊
I’m slowly but surely becoming a BIG fan of yours 🤣 I love horror and enjoy so much your reactions. You’re hilarious! Still many videos to watch. 💪🏼
I always get a little nervous when I watch new (to me) reactors react to this film.
I freaking love this movie, but it's not for everyone.
I'm so happy I gave your video a shot. You guys were a delight, and now I'm off to watch more from you 😊
great video mates, entertaining and intellectual analysis of the movie
Ohh I'm so happy for you choosing to react to this! I saw it on telly here, and got hooked - after the inevitable, initial stunned 🤯 silence which always follows the film. 😅 How would you like some a bit older stuff? Such as 'Priest' from 1994, with marvellous actors such as Tom Wilkinson and Robert Carlyle. I'm struggling to find reaction vids to it, even if it's an impressive film. I'd also highly recommend an older comedy 'Operation Petticoat ' from 1959, starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis - still makes me laugh after dozens of times of watching. Oh, and subscribed! It only took 2 of your vids for me to smash the button. ❤
I was so excited when I logged on and saw you'd posted a video, especially for this movie. Oddly, I find horror movies calming when I'm extremely stressed. It hasn't been a great week but this is a fantastic way to unwind.
I'm really glad that you were able to stop by and check out the video, i hope you're feeling a bit better now. Now it's the weekend you can chilllll (unless you have to work), next week will be a better one! 😊
2:53 - That sun was drawn by that popping girl in hereditary, I’m not going to be able to sleep after seeing that.
Now this would be a cool little easter egg! I love it when there are subtle nods to other movies like this
Just stumbled across your channel this week and absolutely bloody LOVING your reactions Gents. "Barbarian", "When Evil Lurks" and if you can get hold of it "Society" would probably hit the weird sweet spot.
I was genuinely excited for this
Hope you enjoy it mate 😊
56:34 never seen anyone notice this! The face is her sisters though with the gas mask
Out of all the shots, that one shot is actually the creepiest thing in the entire movie.
Oh son of a bish, it’s 4:02 in the morning I was just ready to sleep ahhhhh
I'm so sorry, that's awful timing on my part! 😅
@@JackWillReacthahaha you’re in the uk it’s not your fault 😅
It’s 12H25 and you release this glad u didn’t go to lectures today
I meant “I” instead of u, but I can't edit my comment
I love finding reaction channels at the beginning of their journeys. This is the first video I'm watching because it popped up on my recommended section. So happy I did. Subscribed immediately. You guys are great, you pay attention and catch the little details. Definitely going to binge the rest of your videos! You didn't ask for recommendations but The Witch (2015 - directed by Robert Eggers) would make an awesome reaction.
I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed the video! Such a kind comment, thanks so much! 😊 I've actually hear great things about The Witch so it'll definitely be going on the list!
@@JackWillReact I did notice it on your poll afterwards, so hopefully it wins at some point.
Props to you guys for keeping it all together in the end! Personally, this is a movie I've watched and probably will never watch again lol! Great reaction as always guys! Hope you'll react to The Exorcist next!
The Exorcist is 100% on the list! I've never seen it and it's a classic that needs to be seen!
Love your reactions! Can't wait for you bois to react to The VVitch (2015) and The Thing (1982).
Just found you guys, love your banter and vibe!
That's awesome! Glad to have you here! 😊
Holy shit, have to watch this and I have yet to sleep but there is no way I am missing this reaction. Sleep can wait. So stoked for the danger blood and the horror on your faces 😂
I'm sorry for the awful timing, that's my bad! 😅 there is so much danger blood and horror in this movie though isn't there!
@@JackWillReact it's all good, worth it, because this is hysterical 😂 The cliff scene reaction was glorious 😂👌
At 1:04:14 you can see Pelle looking at Christian through the crack in the door. I have seen this movie like twenty times and never noticed that. He's observing his plan coming into fruition, tl;dr fuck Pelle lol
What a bloody great spot! I would never have noticed that!
You guys are phenomenal ❤ thanks for the laughs. New Subscriber here. "Its a cult not a commune" 😂❤
Really glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😊
Nothing like a disturbing, sunny pagan cult for your social media detox. Highly recommended.
I love y'all's reactions to this movie. If you want to continue down the A24 horror rabbit hole I suggest Talk to Me. I just watched it last night and I'm a grown ass woman and it scared the living shit out of me! Lol
Keep up the great work guys!
This movie ruined theaters for me. I watched this amazing film in a pretty full theater, and all of the atmosphere was obliterated by the crowd laughing at all the wrong parts. Now the only movies I go to a theater to watch are childrens movies with my kids. Lol.
Jack for May Queen!
The director's cut makes it more apparent how bad Christian is, including an extended scene in Siv's house.
I had no idea there was a director's cut! Now i NEED to find these extra scenes
1:00 oh dang
maybe I shouold watch the reaction
for me it was like...a tragic drama, with a lot of secondhand embarrassment (the classroom soon makes me cringe so hard like "don't scream don't scream don't"), a startling moment (running from the corner at him near the end), and a funny moment (the air swim behind him).
So tragic drama/dramatic tragedy (it was more sad than anything). but it was in 2 parts for me because I fell asleep halfway through and had to continue after
20:23 omg....now I realized why her trip immediately went downhill 😮
"family"
Social media detox 💀😭 sweet summer child 😂😂😂
Nothing like a nice social media detox surrounded by cultists eh? 😅
I think they all just call each other "sister"/"brother" in the cult, I don't think Pelle was actually blood siblings with Maja or Ingmar. I might be wrong though.
the cliff jumping part is said to be true but no real evidence, ättestupa its called and we have a few of those places in sweden. the summerhouse my family had back then was 10 min from Hårga where this movie takes place. no wonder why we never celebrated midsummer there. 😅
it actually rules living in the north, as much as the winter is dark we get actual real snow for months on end. and summer feels transcendental. it's so much better than the melting and freezing cycle of ice down south. although this scandinavian stuff is still weird to me as a finn
I’m so glad you caught that at 56:31. It’s Dani’s sister with the tube in her mouth.
you guys should watch the ritual. great, harmless camping movie.
00:00 I saw this in theaters with a friend.
The one thing that scared me was the ending. The bear thing.
And because the music drowned it out...I wasn't horrified til after. I'm already scared of burning deaths and felt awful learning that they lied about the yew "feel no pain" tip and now now one knows it doesn't work because they burn to death and can't tell anyone so it just keeps happening.
but I learned after that while paralyzed Christian is absolutely screaming is head off as he's boiled by the bear fat, and he can't even open his mouth so it's just this continuous rough sound and fuck why am i watching this at night -- anyway i learned through a youtube video that disappeared later, of "Midsommar ending, no music (DISTURBING)" . So in the moment I was just deaf to the horror, and when she smiled at the end I was like "well, good for her, finding somewhere to belong"
you guys are great, can't wait for the inevitable setup upgrade 👍
during the pube-cake scene, have you noticed how christians drink had light red-ish tint and do you remember the love story shown in the beginning.
oh and when you want to really get fucked up, then i recommend the 2008 french movie "Martyrs".
After that nearly nothing will shock you anymore
15:57 :) ah.
17:15 bro
20:26....oh. family.
(Also the Welcome Home _and hug_ for Dani...)
26:20 psyching herself up for something...
32:05 for some reason this didn't bother me
32:40 well, much better than his own landing. Like damn I wish there was a surefire technique they used
Also obligatory-preemptive "they finished him off with a hit from each age group"
34:18 a great joy if (YES a silly mistake)
39:00 I mean in the moment, it seemed so
44:18 oh my godh
45:36 fuckin help
Connie...there was a deleted scene like she was drowned instead
46:40 oh right they would've already shown the mural thing
47:14 probably could've gone better for a few characters if he _was_ the impregnator
51:47 NOOOO
544:58 I only noticed because of the comment you made. Like she literally circled around the outside and fell
56:07 motheerrr
58:34 ah - I thought he just looked like he was having a bad time as an effect of the drugs, runes, and/or slow conditioning (like I keep thinking of where he turned at the table, the dude straight _clapped_ in his face and he shrunk back so meekly like)
1:06:20 and now it's time to take this outta full screen and return to genshin
1:07:10 I fuckin wish
Hey what app did u use to record the movie and your reaction?
You guys are entertaining. Always making me laugh; especially, when commenting on an awful movie like Midsommer (trash!).
I’m going to see if you did watch Heredity: Overrated Trash. But I know you guys will make me laugh. And that will be worth the watch.
Keep up the good work.
Jack better hope he never tries to get recruited by a cult because my boy was compromised and entirely brainwashed by the Harga before the weird shit started happening.
Annnnnd we lost him to the Härga.
The Good Son (1993)
The whole thing with bringing POCS into the community is even more horrific because of the xenophobia in the cult itself. Even so, everyone got the bad end of it.
1. Dani was indoctrinated
2. Josh got his limbs cut off and used as fertilizer
3. Simon got bloopd eagled
4. Christian got SAd( dont wanna debat on that so dont bother)
5. Connie got drowned or choked
And the Last guy(forgot his name cause he was so annoying) got his face skinned off, and honestly, with the cults track record, I wouldn't put it past them to do it while he was alive.
The cult preyed on all of them and its just scary all around.
whereabouts is dan from? i’m sensing a fellow geordie
That's a pretty good ear you have, he's from Boro originally but now living in Newcastle!
React to Suspiria 2018 too!!
now we wait for the sweden vlog

React to the film: LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL (2024), easily the best horror film of the year, creative, fun and unexpected, you're going to enjoy it.
I actually can't wait to watch this movie!
So someone ripped the rest of the audio from Christian burning in the bear suit, and it's HAUNTING.
I think we can all agree that this particular sommar was in fact very mid
48:20 As a Swede I appreciate the meme 🤣
You could watch society of the snow, but in the original language. it is a true story, very very good
This one looks so good! Thanks for the recommendation 😊 I always watch movies in their original language and choose subtitles, not a fan of when dubbed dialogue doesn't match up!
I freaking love this movie

Watch Signs 2002!!
I just checked it out on IMDB and it looks like it's a great suggestion! It's on the list!!
@@JackWillReact loved your reaction to it!
My guess when it comes to the dying at 72 part is maybe they believe in some afterlife where you're the age and have the body of when you died, so they do it at 72 so they've lived a long enough life but they'll still be well enough to use that body in the afterlife whereas if they did ot at say 90 they wouldn't be as independent idk just an idea
Everything is in multiples of nine; ages being 18 Spring 36 Summer 54 Autumn 72 Winter,
Nine sacrifices every ninety years.

Christian is the actual worst. I hate everythjng about him and he just like... never improves. Also "Oh, a mushroom tea, that sounds disgusting" It really is really is 😂
He's just awful right!? Forget the death cult people, Christian is the real villain in this movie 😅 and the mushroom tea combo is something that should never have come into being!
@JackWillReact the cult people are just doing their cult thing, Christian's just the worst for no reason. He can't blame a death cult for his horridness 😂 and no, mushroom should not be tea.
This movie is really bad and it’s a rip off of the Wicker Man. If you don’t believe me, watch them back to back and make me a liar..
