Tying the Greatest Fishing Flies What makes this so Different. 101
This is a second video tying this pattern. Problem was nobody could find it. Due to the thumb. So I have decided on request to re edit.
Solving problems is a lot of what I do. I love the challenges that we go through. Finding a solution is so rewarding. some times you find one. I have worked on this for a few years, and its hard to believe how simple it was. Well only simple now we have found it. As they say, the simple things. But this simple thing has really made a big difference. Hope you enjoy it, and consider subscribing. Many thanks Shaun.

Fly Fishing Smaller Flies for Trout| Still Waters UK 101
มุมมอง 10K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
When the fishing slows you can often put your money on the small flies. Fished slow or fast, deep or heigh. On this day we found the Cling Film Fly out fishing the bigger nymphs. Size 14 and 16.

Winter Fly Fishing Rainbow Trout. And the deadly Hays b&b.
มุมมอง 8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Last week we fished a pattern that turned out so successful we had to return and try again. But this time we decided to fish three patterns. One of which is the Hays b&b. The Hays b&b is new to the fly fishing world. The way in which it is tied makes it a great fish catcher. And becoming a pattern fished around the world with great success.
STILLWATER FLY FISHING UK WINTER. Break the Rules.

Fishing at this time of year can be amazing. When the fish are willing. They are going to be fitter and faster than ever. But what if the fish are not willing the day you are on the water. Fishing this dry and break some rules, can change your day. Not every day is the same. So the more methods you have, the better your chances of cracking these cold days.

Our annual trip to Garnffrwd this year was so different to previous years. The conditions was good, but the fishing was difficult. For us this is ideal. We can find out more about our patterns and our knowledge to catch these fish. This was a bit like going back in time, when one or two fish was acceptable. A very rewarding time on the water. But again one pattern stood out. The Hays B/B. This ...

This fly is The Black Mamba. Been around for some time.
There is a lot of lures out there that look the same. There black. This is not about how it looks. Its about how it works. Now tell me they are the same.
Hi Shaun, tied some of these and had a cracking day at my local Stillwater. One slight variation was to put some small orange eyes on the head. As you say, sits nice and vertical in the water when being pulled. Thank you for sharing, I’ve shared your link with all my fellow anglers.
The main thing is to get it swimming as it should. Its great hearing of the variations and how they do. Thanks so much Des, Appreciate what your doing mate. Take care. Shaun.
A really successful pattern, thank you
Ye and it just got better. Just had comment from thatdamnmackem. he told me how he puts his together. Hes been doing this for over a year and never told me. simple things. But makes a big difference. Clever man. Hope your keeping well John. Thanks for the comment. Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 Hi Shaun, not so well at the moment. eyesight has gone again. I've also got a minor amendment, not really mine, it's a tip I picked up off Alec Harvey who, like you, ties fishing patterns on TH-cam, maybe you've seen his videos. Anyway, I might be well enough to go fishing on Friday and give the variation a try and I'll let you know how I get on. By any chance will you be going to the BFFI in Feb? It would be interesting to meet up and perhaps the show could produce some footage for your own review.
Great pattern Shaun, I tied some after your first video, they have caught me many a fish, I tied mine with an upturned eye hook, I bent the eye up but you can buy them, depends on the make of hook whether it will bend or snap, the upturned hook helps to keep the fly upright, I also tied two strips of 1mm lead under the hook instead of the wraps, anybody wants some I can also tie some if anyone wants them
Just when you think you have thought it all through. This is brilliant. You must be on the same wave length. Does this mean we have to do another video. Pity you did not tell me this before. Small detail, but so much better. For me the hook eye is it. Where as the lead is so much easier. Love it mate. Thanks for the late tip. Oh thanks for the offer of tying. Lets hope not too many read this comment, or your going to the busy man. Take care mate. Shaun.
@ Thanks Shaun, I've listed some on Fleabay with a plug for your channel, hope that's ok mate, Brian
Thanks for this Shaun....any idea where to source the material for the cheeks, can't seem to find in UK
I used chartreuse flashabou dubbing for mine, comes in strips around 10/20mm mm in length, it's available on Fleabay
Or even Crystal flash. Same as tail. Sorry I had a feeling this might have been difficult. But not important. The lead is what is important. Check out thatdamnmackem comment to me. This is a great way to do the fly. Shaun.
NOTICE: We hve had some very kind offers for tying flies. Cameron and Conservatree NZ. I would like to thank you, and on behalf of every body else. This is what I love within the fishing community. For most of the time people willing to help others. But I want you to be aware that Cameron and Conservatree are helping you out, and are not full time fly tying. I would hate to see them put under any sort of pressure regarding demand. By all means contact them. But be aware that return times of goods may not be as your local shop. Many thanks. Take care. Shaun.
Hi Shaun, enjoyed the video again. Thanks for the reply. Sorry you've been under the weather recently hope your feeling a little better. Will follow up regarding the Hays B/B you take care mate, keep in touch
Hi Ray, Ye was not good for about three weeks. Stuck in the house isolating. Bloody boring. Done no fishing for about a month, so can't wait to get out again. Not sure as to when I will be at Hayscastle. I am going to cover other waters. Catch up soon. Take care Ray. Shaun.
Anyone in New Zealand that wants one reach out to me
This is so kind. Not saying its the greatest pattern out there. But it is pretty consistent. Its certainly more about how the lead works the fly. So there can be a lot of patterns with the same lead set up to improve how they swim. Thanks again for your kind offer. Take care. Shaun.
Excellent stuff shaun. Can't wait to see your next fishing video.
Neither can I. I have had this bug going around. Three weeks isolating. Done my head in. Mind did sort all my flies out. We are planning on a water which is quite different. Really looking forward to it. But have to work around the weather for this one. Thanks for the comment Brian. Take care mate. Shaun.
Thanks Shaun. I tied up a few and am going to try them again on the next sunny day
Robin you might have to do a few more. Check out thatdamnmackem comment. How he has put this fly together is brilliant. Simple tweaks, but spot on. You only do sunny days do you. You live in the UK. Not much fishing then. Weather here in west wales is crap at moment, and not looking good for a good few days. Thanks for the comment Brian. Take care mate. Shaun.
@ No, I fish in all weathers, but the water, in the last few weeks has got quite murky with all the rain. Hoping to go on Thursday this week, then I’m out of it for a few weeks, …. Major heart op. Take care Shaun
PS say the comment and will try tying that way and bending the hook eye!
Some day I will hopefully learn this. But I haven't seen any videos where any of the common terms are explained. So, they aren't very helpful. For instance, I don't know what you mean by "load the line on the backside of the belly", false cast, and several other techniques and terms, I'm just not familiar with. I guess I should just go to the library, like we used to do so many years ago. 😆 but I grew up in hawaii, and spearfishing is just so much fun, that fly fishing never even presented itself as an option. But now I live in the panic northwest. And while I do ok for myself around here with a spinning combo, there are times and places where the trophy fish will only bite on a proper fly presentation. I've only tried casting flies a couple dozen times, and have practiced in my yard. But so far, all I feel like I'm doing is wasting good fishing time, and messing with my pain levels unnecessarily. 😆
This is a great comment. Pointing out the things we struggle with when starting out, but soon forget. There are a lot of things we could go through, but this would be hellish long. The first point you made, which is load the line. Actually this is load the rod. This is when the rod is in its bent position, due to the amount of line out side the top eye. As you put more line out side that top eye, the more the rod will bend, due to the weight of line. The ideal time to shoot the line. Which means the final forward cast to let the line out onto the water. Most lines have what we call the belly. This is the thickest front section of the line. As we near the back end of the thicker part of line, or belly. This is where we make our final forward cast for best performance or distance. All lines have different lengths of belly. Starting out I would recommend a line with a shorter belly. Most lines will state all measurements, including the belly on box or online. One very good line starting out is the Barrio GT 90 Floating line. This line has a 10' front tapper and a 10' belly. This means you don't have to have loads of line going back and forth in the air, false casting. When performing the cast, most people swing the rod to fast. Slowing it down slightly will give the line a chance to flatten out in the air. What I am trying to say, is that you do not want the line to be still traveling backwards as you start the forward cast. Having that line level out behind you in the air, and just before it starts to drop towards the ground, will load the rod really well. Its all about timing, and practice. But when done well, it will be effortless. Catching on a fly rod is so thrilling, due to the sensitivity. We all go through this learning process. For some it comes a bit faster. But most of all, try to enjoy it. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.
Nice one. The underwater shots add a lot to the video
Ye every one likes the under water shots. Can only get the best on certain waters. I do throw a few in at a time. But I am aware it can be over done. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.
Hi Shaun great video and a must tie fly looking forward to trying it out thankyou for sharing it with us keep up the great work
Its certainly worth time on the vice Paul. The lead work is most important. Other than that its what ever you fancy. But it's success is very much on the high end. Take care Paul. Great to hear from you again mate. Shaun.
Hi mate hope you are keeping well. just knocked up a couple of these in different colours , i will try them tomorrow . take care :)
Been off sick for the last few weeks. Bloody annoying when I really need to work. No fishing for all this time. Must be the longest I have never fished. Catch up soon. Take care mate. Shaun.
Thanks for sharing Shaun, I will be tying a few and testing on a few of local venues.
As I said in the video Dermot. If its worth putting on the channel its worth tying. A great pattern to cast as well as fish. Pay attention to the lead. That's the main thing. What ever dressing you give it is up to you. But most important is its success rate is high. Thanks Dermot. Take care mate. Shaun.
Hi Shaun. I have had a lot of success with this patern whether its on the floating line or intermediate line. Nice one mate keep them coming.😁
Hi Shaun, nice looking lure. Can i ask what material are you using for the cheeks?
Its Flash Bright Golden Olive John. The dressings are not as important, as the lead is most important. You could use Crystal Flash. You will see from the comments that people are tying variations. But the lead is the important bit.
@@shaunfishes101 Thanks Shaun, and thanks also for sharing this with us all.

Star man. Thanks Cameron.
Thats really nice Shaun. Will try that one! Thank you.
It works well Jason. Just make sure the lead is, as is. Enjoyable casting and fishing. And put what ever dressing you fancy. It will fish in the correct position all the time. Thanks for the comment Jason. Shaun.
I would tie some for ppl who want them if they just pay shipping 👍
This is very nice of you mate. You could turn out to be very busy. I would like to have one from you. This is more down to people will end up asking me about quality. Hope you don,t mind. Not to good with computers as regards getting in touch with you. Is it messenger or something.
Hi shaun lovely looking fly mate@shaunfishes101
@@deanhayes2224 You want to sort your self a few of these mate. Honestly they are pretty consistent. If you don,t tie. Check out what Cameron has offered. Thanks and take care Dean mate. Shaun.
@cameronstevenson5894 hi Cameron my name is Dean I would like to have 2 of these flies
Hi Cameron. Could you tie me a few of these please?
Shaun - I thanked you after the original video of this fly. I’ve now caught on an olive and a white version on this. Planning to be using this on the point as my go to fly. Works as tadpole in black, damsel in olive and grey in white
I did try the Olive myself. I think a lot has to go down to confidence. Its funny as I have never had the same thing with Olive as so many do. I watched it in the water. It stood out like a soar thumb in our crystal clear waters. That sort of put me off. But great to hear that its working for you mate. Get the lead work in place and we can create a lot of patterns that swim correctly. Take care and thanks. Shaun.
@ my club water is doing hillside fed in Lancashire. The water is crystal clear. Thanks again
Really enjoy your videos of the art of fly fishing. What camera do you film on please
GoPro 9 black, Sony zv-1, old Canon power shot and gopro 7 for under water shots. Wish I new how to use them. I have two mates that have to set them up for me. Thanks for supporting the channel Mickey. Take care mate. Shaun.
Just watched these again, getting excited for this year now with you and Steve
This does look keen. We are on the water sunday if you fancy it. Not sure where at moment. But have considered llysyfran. Have to talk with Steve.
Stunning location Shaun 👌
This water several years ago was the place to be. A lot has happened here which is not all good. It is still a good water. But it takes a lot of work to keep a water at top notch all the time. And there has to be a balance as to when to stock and how many. This has been ignored for the benefit of some. So now the water needs a break and a good sort out. Which may well happen, as there are new owners moving in. Jamie the existing owner has done very well with the water. But he works on his own. This water is too big for one person to run. But yes a stunning location. And I love being there.
Thank you Shaun. Not heard of the Cling Film fly before watching this video - and now watched you tying it too. Best I get the vice out now 🙂
Hi Mike the Cling Film Fly has been with us for a while now, and caught quite a few fish. There are so many things we can create with Cling Film. Just have to think a bit. There is a channel in Spain That has copied our idea. In all fairness they have produced some nice flies. I also use it as a body stretch. The pattern itself is so simple. Just a small hook with a small amount of dubbing. Add the cling film wings to what ever size you fancy. Most of ours are smaller than in the video. But when fish are finicky. This could be the fly.
Looking for the tying of the hays b&b, can’t find one can you help?
Sorry Rodger I can't send you a link, as I am unsure how to. Not very good with computers. The video you are looking for is twelve months old and it comes under, Greatest Fishing Lures with improved Hooking. What ever materials you use is up to you. Most important part is the lead. When this is done correctly you will see the difference in the water. It fishes as it should. Unlike most lures out there. Good luck and tight lines mate. Shaun.
Dont know if I missed it but which Barrio Line was the one you used Shaun.
It was the GT 90. I still rate these lines. Great balance of front taper. Which is 10'. The short belly which means you don't have to have a load of line out to make the cast. And the running line tappers back to the reel. One thing only they have a bit of stretch. But if you have a fast action rod, this could be a great combination. That stretch can allow you to drop tippet size. If your unsure as to what line. You can always contact Mike the owner. He is always very helpful.
@@shaunfishes101 Thanks Shaun much appreciated, I have contacted Mike not had an answer yet but also found they are now made in America which might explain the price hike.
I actually prefer fishing into the wind with buzzers/lures always seem to get big numbers 🙌
I can sort of understand lures working at times better into the wind. But that will depend on the time of year. This is more down to undertow. However the natural buzzer in a decent wind, would be unable to swim against this sort of undertow. Which is always going in the opposite direction of the wind. But I am aware that the buzzer as we know it can represent a lot of aquatic life. And there is a lot of it darting around down there. Stick to what you know. If it works. One of the greatest things about fishing I love. Is that even though we go out with a plan, method in mind. On the day we discover the fish reacting to something completely different. Its just working out what it is on the day. When you have fished as long as I have, you soon understand there is no such thing as the wrong way. Anything can work on the day.
Just getting round to watching your last three episodes Shaun, looked a hard day…but a hard days fishings better than a good day at work. All the best for 2025 mate
Ye was a tricky day. But we really don't mind these days. We were aware of the water being stocked the following week. Ye it can be fun, but there is no challenge. But at this moment I would love to go fishing or work. I am stuck in the house isolating. Got that bloody flu bug going around. Making the most of the time. Going through all my flies. I must of binned 100 plus. I am now nearing three small fly boxes. Thanks for the comment Stuart. Happy new year mate. Shaun.
Well in my friend , the forecasts are all over the place .I bet that young lad learned more from you than you think .great to pass on the knowledge Sean. Need ti get my fishing buddy to make sandwiches 😅 .brilliantly done

I hope your back is a lot better. Its unreal as to how much stuff you get sent. I get nothing. Mind I don't like to feel obligated. Ye a few waters will have pontoons, but not quite as long. Great video Shaun as always. I'm looking for a new waterproof coat and like the look of yours; is it any good?
Really good mate. I got fed up of being ripped off with all the fishing companies. This Jacket is from Tresspass. Was thinking of doing a review on it. I have been in some very bad weather and for long periods. Bone dry. Best bit is. About £140. And pockets will fit a decent fly box. Worth looking into. Mountain Warehouse may do a range. But not tried them. Thanks for the comment William. Happy new year mate. Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 Many thanks Shaun. I'll check it out. Happy New Year.
Hi Shaun hard day there. What floating line are you using. It lies great in water. Not any memory on it. Great you helped that young lad.
Don't believe every thing you see on camera. I look at it, yes looks a lot better on camera. Its a Cortland 444 Peach. Which is good. But do prefer a line with less memory. This means getting better has to damn good. Match Catch Avid. Fished this line several months back. Has a long belly, did get used to this. But a great fishing line. This sort of line is very suited to fishing small and slow. Oh its cheap. Happy new year William. Shaun.
@ Totally agree. I have the celestial floating line in avocado. Must admit very good line. Happy new year.
@@williamwilson2485 Had a feeling you had this line. I did notice your comment on other channel. Should have asked what you fish with mainly. The lines I am using mostly now are more for smaller patterns. Did look at Celestial lines. They are to aggressive for what I want. I am not so concerned for distance. Presentation more so. But a good line for bigger patterns, such as lures. But a bit to much for the small stuff. All fine as long as we are fishing for stock fish. So you have idea. Short belly long front tapper is good for presentation. Short front tapper for bigger patterns, more aggressive. But more than pleased you are happy with this line. Shaun.
@ Keep that in mind Shaun. Do fish mainly still waters. Fish The Lake Menteith regularly aswell. So need we variety of lines.
That was a lovely touch shaun giving up your fishing spot to that young boy amazing mate😊
Good video shaun as always I went to my local bigwell had 3 but it was very cold afew people blanked so I was relieved that I didn't blank hope your doing ok mate

Love it less is more nice tie
Most certainly is Tim. And with a little imagination the cling film goes a long way. We are fishing with simple patterns more and more lately. Thanks for the comment Tim. Happy new year to you. Shaun.
Cheers Shaun I’m the boy in the video appreciate your kindness and help!
Hi, really great to hear from you. I was watching you on the water, and have to say your casting was very good for some one just getting back into it. Your fly box will need a bit of an upgrade. A few lures such as Gareth Wilson,s. UK fly fisher. And a few more smaller patterns. Diawel Bach being top of the list. Might bump into you again some time. Take care. Happy new year to you. Shaun.
All the best Shaun for 2025. Thanks for all the time and devotion you put into filming and uploading content for us all. Much appreciated mate. :) David
Ye looking forward to a bit of luck for 25. Not started very well. Got myself a bug now. Like a flu sort of thing. So isolating and off work. One good thing its not as cold here as you have got it there. I bet its really cold with you. Lots of snow towards the north. But here, south west wales, its actually cold and sunny. Happy new year David. Thanks mate. Shaun.
Wow, this is a great idea. I can see all kinds of uses for the cling wrap. I love experimenting, and this is going to be fun..very clever. Thank you.
Been using cling film for years. Unlike in the video I do keep most wings smaller. Like you say a bit of imagination, and its endless. Thanks for the comment John. Happy new year. Shaun.
Great video Shaun. I was out at a similar time and having my hood up was definitley a good idea 🤣
I know these conditions is not for every body. But as you know, there is the achievement. I love it. And at times like any other fishing day, we can catch fish. Happy new year mate. Shaun.

Flip net from Sharps of Abberdean. Sea Trout Rubber. I have had a lot of nets. But this is by far the best. Third one now in 30 plus years. Will do a video on them some time, as there are a few tricks to improve them even more. Thanks Scott. Happy new year mate. Shaun.
Happy new year Shaun and all the best for 2025!!! Please keep up the great work as it's been very inspiring to me as a novice.
Thanks Mike. And we will. All the best for 2025 mate. Shaun.
Hi mate, starting tying now!! Copying some of your patterns and a couple of my own ideas, I'd be really interested to know what glue you use for your knots as I'm trying UV at the moment and I'm not sure about it? A couple of times I've cured it ( maybe not enough,?) and the knots unpick really easily so not confident at all with it! Super glue is ok but it does tend to go white and not show up and hotspots I put in? Your advice would be much appreciated. Mike
@@MichaelHead-x4d I stick with what I know, and never have a problem. Veniards Cellire Varnish. If you have the need for uv then its worth shopping around. I have heard good and bad. But its something I have not got into. Yes the patterns look good. But what do the fish think. If you have a problem with the whip finish, which it sounds like. As a good finish should not come apart that easy. even without a varnish. Just use the hook without any dressing and mess about with your whip finish. Use a bigger hook. You can cut this off and start again. Practice makes perfect. Keep things simple mate, and enjoy it. Hope this helps. Shaun.
@shaunfishes101 thanks for getting back to me Shaun and I will get practicing!!
Thanks Shaun!! Another great vid 👌🏼
Thanks so much Euan. Not sure but I do think this is your first comment on the channel. Forgive me if I am wrong. I really appreciate your time. Thanks. Happy new year Euan. Shaun.
