Our annual trip to Garnffrwd this year was so different to previous years. The conditions was good, but the fishing was difficult. For us this is ideal. We can find out more about our patterns and our knowledge to catch these fish. This was a bit like going back in time, when one or two fish was acceptable. A very rewarding time on the water. But again one pattern stood out. The Hays B/B. This ...

      Had a very similar situation a few weeks ago at Garnffrwd. About eleven on the water. Conditions difficult. Watched all the methods being fished. Then done something different. Fished as normal to start. Small nymph fast and high. A few follows and one on and off. ended up getting four fish out with our small cling film fly, fished slow and almost static just about on the surface. Very slow fishing. but by the end of the day ended up top rod. We seem to be scaling down more and more once those fish have been in for a week or more. Good luck with your next trip. But remember you can learn more on those difficult days. Chill and enjoy. Take care, and thanks for which I think is your first comment here. Shaun.

    How about "Green Gage" as in the type of plum? It being a play on the phrase Plum choice is an informal term that means something is very desirable or superior, especially when given in return for a favour. For example, you might describe a job as a "plum job".

    Ellerdine last Monday, 10 fish on a real mix of flies and techniques. If I had to pick one set up that appeals to both stockiest and resdent fish I think a cast with an olive apps and a red or pink one work well at this time of year. If no fish come to the pink, put a smallish name on instead.

How fast things change. Years ago stock would go in and it was fun for weeks. Now the changes are so fast. We are seeing fish go off over the week. By week three we are slowing to almost static and very small on top, or near top. Take care mate. Thanks again. Shaun.

To be honest we would not have c/r if it was not for so many people traveling from so far to fish hear. 2 + hours is average. C/r could be burning out. There are disadvantages to having it, which I can not go into. But will be interesting to see where it is in the next five years. No worries working on the next already. Thanks for your support. Hi Shaun, im really enjoying your videos they are very informative and inspiring. I hope everything works out for you! Great work in Portugal 👍 I was wondering if you could give me some advice, I have just got back into fly fishing, and my floating line has seen better days. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for a new fly line. Something that loads the rod well and able to get extra distance. I have an orvis western 3 7wt tip flex. I had my eyes on snowbee lines but I'm not sure as reviews are few and far between on TH-cam. Thanks in advance if you get chance to get back to me! Regards James

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      All things considered its your own ability which makes the big difference. However considering your rod and that you would like to load quickly. I would suggest the Barrio lines. This line will perform well with a lot of patterns. It has a 10' front tapper and a 10' belly and the running line is tapered back to the reel. 10' front taper means its presentation is middle of the road. 10' belly means you can shoot the line with as little as two rod lengths out side the rod tip. And a taper on the running line means you can back cast as much as you like without loosing too much energy. The line has got a bit of stretch in it, which can work in your favour. As you have a powerful rod, the stretch will enable you to reduce your tippet strength. The line carries very little memory and sits nice on the water. Check out the Barrio web site. If you are not sure of anything, contact Mike Barrio himself. He is very helpful, and will always give good advise. Thanks for watching the channel James, and I hope you enjoy your new line. What ever it is. Take care. Shaun.

    Thanks for the excellent video, a great explanation on the stockies ref hook ups, I was pulling my hair out this week on a large res, lost 5 fish and couldn’t understand why, now I do, and as it happens I found out later there had been a recent stocking ! Always very interesting to see you try new things bucking the tradition to try differently, thanks again

      For years my self and so many others have always gone with the myth of stock fish with soft mouths. But it never sat well with me. So about 2 years ago I had the opportunity to study stock fish more closely. And when doing this I used five patterns. From a small 16 natural up to a size 10 apps. Fishing the same shoal of stock fish. It was amazing to watch. Seeing them pay very little attention to the small natural. I did get a few on it, but it was difficult. As I worked my way up towards the apps. Our red weighted one. The difference was amazing. ALL patterns attracted fish. But the difference from the small natural and the apps, as I have said amazing. Each cast had at least four plus fish follow it, and bumping it. And a few to the net. And as we now know, a few lost. All this is on a video on the channel. Can't remember at mo which it is. But if your interested let me know. I will find it. Great to hear from you John. Thanks for the comment mate. Take care. Shaun.

    Hi Shaun, great to see you back. I’m sorry you’ve been having a tough time and I’ve missed your videos a lot. This one was brilliant…as with every seasonal change I check back to see what I need to do so the timing of this film was perfect. I love the way you’ll give up the prospect of catching more fish just to see which technique works better …..taking one for the team as they say. Our local lake has had problems with stocking for months now so we are down to the bare bones and only very cautious residents left. Saying that in five hours last Saturday I only had two takes…..but the second fish was a very fit double so it has its advantages over catching stockie after stockie. The big fish took a tiny buzzer about three feet from the shoreline. I was lucky enough to see him take the fly with a twist of his head so managed to strike at the right time. Exiting stuff. Keep up the good work Shaun ….cant wait for the next video.👏🎣

      Ye been a bit shit to be honest. Never seen it coming. Still in the middle of it. But with time I am getting used to it. A lot of waters are finding things difficult. Its the changes we are experiencing. But for those who can understand whats happening, will benefit. Us boys often switch methods to try things as appose going to the go to method. We find it more interesting. But if you are more interested in numbers, then you would not be doing this. But then what do you learn. That was a cracking fish. My best fish, which was in the water for about three months. I know this as the fishery manager told me. He had put three 20lbers in, and nobody had hooked one. I could see the fish about three foot down. Going around in the same bit of water all the time. It was like watching a basking shark feed. The fish would not chase anything. Just opened its mouth and sucked it all in. Well, my black buzzer was in its path. Great to hear from you mate. Take care. Shaun.
