Another great, real video Shaun! Sets your channel apart from many other same old, same old channels. The more I get back into the sport the more I enjoy thinking about the psychology and behaviour of fishing...how I approach it and how others do. It’s not a numbers game for me, or size of fish, yet it is for many, many others! It’s not about taking a bag limit on every outing, using the same method like I see many others do! Typically the bung anglers! 😬 It’s not about hogging the same pegs, or lugging around loads of tackle around a venue like many others do. I fish to connect with the fish, hook a few and net a few, taking as little tackle as possible and fishing with as few patterns as possible. Trying different presentation techniques, patterns I’ve concocted myself and being with nature is for me, is what it’s all about. So yeah, keep making your videos Shaun, they’re really appreciated and valued! Cheers! Jon
It sounds as if I have told you what to mention in this comment. This is exactly how I feel, and it looks as if a few others do also. If you get into numbers, it never ends. And when you fail its a downer. Negative. Same goes for I want bigger. Totally, make it simple and enjoy. There is so much good about fishing and connecting with the great out doors. Oh a nice cuppa is good. This comment has a thumbs up from me mate. Really nice to know you. Shaun.
I really like the approach of "fish your confidence flies", it makes me not think about my patterns but instead focus on my presentation, which is what really makes the difference 99/100 times. Cheers!
Presentation is key, oh and confidence of course. So many times on a water you will find several patterns have been catching the fish. Not just one pattern. Often you will find its how and where it has been fished. Thanks for the comment. Nice to hear from you. Take care. Shaun.
Very much enjoyed the philosophical musings. Recently I decided I wasn’t interested in pulling lures or suspending green snot balls under a bung so I’m sticking with dries when the fish are rising (which happens at some point most days) and wets nymphs and buzzers when they’re not. I’ve dropped to 4lb tippet and am concentrating on technique. It’s these variables that make fishing so fascinating.
I my self will still do a few lures. Have tried the bung, but did not enjoy it. The experience lasted about half an hour. Like you I am heading towards the 4lb tippet mark to present dries and smaller nymphs. But first I have to get a rod for the job. Justin has recently purchased a nice rod, which seems perfect. All my rods are a bit to much towards the faster action. I am heading back in time. Back to a more mid tip and possibly a double tapper line. I will still manage bigger distance. but the purpose hear is mid range with great presentation. The faster rod is still very useful when the wind is up. Thanks for the comment and great to hear from you. Shaun.
Hi Shaun, I started watching your channel in the past few months. Thank you for the multiple tips and practical approach to sometimes challenging fish and conditions. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas. D.
Sorry I have not got back to you sooner. Thank you so much. I hope all went well for you at Christmas. Looking forward to bringing you more tips for 2024. Thanks again. Shaun.
OUTSTANDING, in one word shaun. Stick to you guns and it payed off mate. Stunning location. Top upload as always, kind regards Mike. Norfolk. Tight lines.
Thanks Mike, I think we will see a bit of this water in the future. It may not be the biggest of waters. But it is so relaxing there. I am really looking forward to the changes there with the seasons. Take care Mike and thanks mate. Shaun.
Thanks so much Mark. I am really looking forward to more on this water. There is so much to understand about these sorts of waters, and most certainly for the novice. Take care mate. Shaun.
Those trees are amazing, they catch every thing. Trying to get a solid bit of time working on the water. So you should see a difference when you are down next. Take care mate.
Superb video as always Shaun….really well put together and some great advice. I love your attitude to fishing ….it helps me to think less competitively and just enjoy the process. I look forward to your next film. Only four weeks to go here on Lynn Fawr but we’ve had some wonderful fishing. Onto the Grayling on the Taff for me until March.
Having a kettle helps. Great to hear the fishing has been good. I think a good few waters have picked up a bit of late. Which is great to hear after that summer. Never done Grayling. I hope you have some great sport on the river. Catch up again one day mate. Take care. Shaun.
Thanks so much Martin. To be honest my lack of knowing computers and how to get around, limits my choice of music. I am stuck with the stuff that TH-cam provide. I am aware of places that I can purchase. But don't really want to go down that road. Yet. Thanks for your support Martin. Shaun.
Well done Shaun another good video. I tip my cap to you for sticking to your method when it’s clearly the wrong method for the day. I’d of switch straight away 😂😂
Honestly mate, I can be like a dog with a bone at times. But this is how it works for me most of the time. Its not about catching lots. But if this happens that's fine too. Thing is I will put time into thinking of a new pattern. Sometimes its only a tweak. But once I get onto the water with this pattern I have to fish it as much as I can. That means covering lots of water and trying all sorts of retrieves and depths. And as every body knows every day is different. So I have to do it all over again. We all have different goals. But achieving them and enjoying them is key. But because of my mind set, I do find this easy. Oh and one really big point. I fish a lot. So I don't have to wait a whole week for that pull. However if I only fished once a week I am almost certain that I would have switched much sooner. Like how long can one go without that amazing feeling when the fish picks you up. Thanks for the comment mate. Shaun.
I think you could be spot on there. All those trees and shrub. We will find out. And I am looking forward to it. Can't wait to show you how it goes. Thanks Stuart. Catch up soon. Shaun.
Thanks I do try to mix them up a bit. Try to get a bit of tutorial in there. In a way of showing as much as telling. And negatives are as good as positive. Thanks again. Take care. Shaun.
hi Shaun ,found your channel and subbed you amazing content so easy to watch and learn from you thanks for sharing i am new to this hobby i live in nottingham and i am struggling to find a decent fly tying vice any info will be greatly appreciated many thanks going to binge watch all your uploads for some inspiration cheers .
Thank you so much Clive. And welcome to the channel. What you will soon notice, is that we do not post every week. At best it could be two a month. There will be a mix of videos. A good few with tips. And a few full on tutorials. Any thing you would like to know just ask. No matter how trivial it may be, we will always answer. Every body starts somewhere. So for your first one. The most important thing for a vice is to hold the hook steady. I had the same vice for over 40 years. It was simple and cheap. Clamp to a table top. A lever to clamp the jaws closed. These vices cost about £14 to £17. I would start there if I was you. Over the years when you have gained more experience you will know what it is exactly you want from your next vice. Getting the best price for materials. Try your local fabric shop or sewing shop. You will find lots of things like glitter yarn, beads and so on. Some of the basic starter packs can be good. You will get most of what you want starting out. As you are new to this past time, I can tell you its a wonderful thing. The whole thing from learning fly casting, which when done properly is an art. Tying your own flies and catching your first fish with that fly. There is so much to learn. And we learn every day. Never two days the same. Keep in touch Clive. Enjoy. Shaun. Oh one thing. Did you subscribe on this video.
I must thank you John. So thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I would love to do more for you and every body else. Like seeing new waters. But my budget as it is, does not allow me to do much or go far. But any spare cash now will have to be spent on a black Fly Reel. Thanks mate. Take care. Shaun.
Thanks Gary. I really enjoyed this water, there is so much going on around the margins. And the feeling you get while there is just so relaxing. Yes I fish a lot of waters with plenty of trees and shrub. But these are much bigger waters. This water you are actually in it. A very nice experience. Bit like going on a holiday. Nice once and a while. Thanks for the comment Gary. Great hearing from you. Shaun.
That sounds like me. I am like a dog with a bone, as the boys say. And who's to say, the way fish are of late, up and down in the water columns. They could switch to high water at any time. Then I would be on it. Thing is I am not competitive. And getting a few fish and a few cuppas for a day is fine for me. And for people who do try alternatives do at times work out a method that could work. That in turn gives more options for certain conditions. Other than that we would all be doing the same thing. Boring. But more than anything, this was more for the video. Great to hear from you. Take care. Shaun.
Hi Mike, hope your keeping well mate. The water is near Aberystwyth. I am sure it is online. Long trip for you mind. It is small but stunning. And some great fish in there. Take care mike, best to the boys. Shaun.
Thanks John. Covered Three waters. Should have been four. But we had trouble with the car and broke down. The main purpose here was taking time off to spend with a subscriber who had traveled hundreds of miles and stayed at a lodge here at Hayscastle for a week, to learn fly fishing. So we decided to cover a few waters. But these are waters I know. Then a few days with Justin. And this water. I would love to do more. But my budget is small. Thanks again John. Shaun.
Justin could catch in a puddle and re fluor vs mono, i used to use drennan double strength but stopped years ago with the onset of the new sexy stuff. I may switch back someday...as for flies, i am still doing better with small slowly moved nymphs than lures which as i mentioned a coupke of vids back is odd for this time of year
Justin is the real deal. He is so consistent. And most importantly, he is a joy to be around. I think most of us that have fished long enough, fished with mono. Yes Drennan Double, and Maxima was very popular. Yes you did tell me in the previous post regarding nymphs. And our water is still accounting for most fish. However lure numbers are starting to grow a bit now. But as you say, nothing like it was. Thanks for your comment and support mate. Shaun.
Justin the fish magnet is never off it is he Shaun ?. I've been doing the same i dont use lures for a while, but that might just be me being stubborn , not cos I'm a prolific catcher. Great vid Shaun chat soon !
Justin, not often. His difficult day is a good day for us mate. Same hear not used the lure much. But then they have not had the same appeal to the fish as in previous years. This could be down to individual waters. But I am surprised as to how many people are having the same on there waters. On the water today and struggled. Only managed one. Jim one of the river boys had eight. On the bung. This method has not done very well on our water, only for the odd occasion. But over the last week or so its been on it. Catch up soon mate.
Mark I will need address. If you like you can put it on here and I will delete as soon as I have it. I am on here most evenings. Or we could try messenger. Mind I am not to clever with messenger.

Hi Shaun, another thought provoking video, on your week off fishing, do you try a couple of fisheries or try and crack one or a new one every day?
