Sorry Alan I really thought I had replied to your comment. Not sure if I am more pleased to hear about the pattern, or that your good wife has taken up Fly Fishing, and doing so well. This pattern has done us so well over the last twelve months. I fished it consistently for the first six months and it never failed. But over twelve months if failed three times. But those fails it was only fished for about an hour. I watch it in the water, and see it swims upright every time. Its a shame that I can not find anybody to get the pattern out to the public. For me to do myself is so much work, and I would not keep up with demand. I was only using it the other day when it started pulling fish. Hi James just remember the most important thing here is the lead. Its a small detail that makes a massive difference. Plus being lighter makes it a treat to cast. Another benefit of being lighter, is that the pattern stays in the zone for longer. For the last 5 months we have fished this pattern. Not constant. But up until last week it was catching fish every time. I fished it for about half an hour and it had its first fail. But this is one of the most consistent patterns we have fished. Like most patterns its working out how to fish it on the day. And like all good fishing people, will understand every trip will be different. But it was intended to be fished on an intermediate. This enables us to fish with a bit of pace at lower levels. I would love to hear how you get on with this pattern in your waters. Take care James and thanks. Shaun.
Shaun I am sorry I have not responded and offered an update sooner. This fly has indeed been very effective while pond fishing out of a canoe (Adirondack Guideboat). I try to stay anchored or move very slowly and use your techniques. First cast I had a take and many casts after. it is a great pattern. Thank you
Thanks again Billy. Its funny, we get used to fishing in waters like this. Then find it a bit of a challenge when fishing coloured water. And for those who fish coloured waters would face the same challenge when fishing clear waters. For most of the time we scale every thing down. Take care mate. Shaun.
@shaunfishes101 Been out at a few of my local fisheries, but I'm struggling with my casting a bit. Recovery is quite hard but I'm getting there. You're videos are always good to watch.
Its more about the lead Mark. How ever you dress it will be your choice. However these are proven materials. Honestly Mark this pattern has had so many fish in the last few months. And from several waters. Great on the stock fish, as a lot of patterns are. But does pull a good few resident fish. Good luck Mark. Shaun.
That is one amazing fly patten. The ones you gave me really worked and landed loads of fish at garn and hayscastle. I did enjoy tying one and best of all catching fish on flys you have tied yourself.
It was great watching you pulling all those fish in on the lure the other week. The thing is the more you get with it, the more you catch. And I know you have the confidence in that pattern now. Looking forward to our next trip out together. Grimsby was great.
However you dress it up Allan. But most important is the lead. Was on the water today at Hayscastle. We are very lucky here as there is some deep water up to 18' and we are on the west coast of wales facing the Irish sea/ Atlantic. So this water does not suffer as most waters at this time of year with the heat. Fished a mix of patterns for the first hour or so. But then put the Hays Black and Blue on. There was a few lures being fished. But nothing matched the Hays B/B. Can't remember how many fish, but around 8 and did loose two. Which is not meant to happen. Conditions difficult. Yes I would definitely recommend this pattern. Intermediate line by far the best. Mess about with the retrieves. Good look mate and thanks for the comment. Oh let me know how you get on. Shaun.
Me Shaun have trouble tying my shoe laces😂 but really enjoyed the video, I know what a great pattern this is, you put it over brilliantly, keep them coming mate
The lead gives us an alternative. And honestly I am not sure if I will be using many beads from now on. Let me know how you get on when sorted. Thanks mate. Shaun.
I've been using this pattern for a couple of years now! It's a staple in my box, especially for brook trout. I do it in red as well. I prefer to fish it weightless on an intermediate line.
There is a lot of patterns like this to look at. But does it have the same lead work. There is a very good reason why we have taken so long with this pattern. Getting that balance of weight does not happen over night. A bit of thought and trial and error.
@shaunfishes101 of definitely for sure. Adding the weight for using non weighted lines. I play around a lot with weighted and non weighted flies. I like to see the difference and how fast or slow you can work it. I'm not taking away from any work you put into it at all. I was just saying how I like to throw a small streamer like that. I should play around more by throwing non weighted lines with weighted patterns. I do sometimes just always seem to have better luck with a weighted line.
I am so pleased you have this pattern. I have not fished it for some time now. Have spent more time working with the pearly nymph. Mind its the dry fly that does the damage at the moment. Nice demmo there Shaun, we fish bass lures that we call weedless where the hook point comes out of the top of the lure, could be an interesting concept for a fly you would have to weight the top of the hook so if fishes upside down. thoughts please Shaun
Yes I am aware of this lure. Have done a lot of bass myself. Justin and myself have talked about different hook positions. Sideways no good, as explained in the video. But up is interesting. Swings and roundabouts. I can see hooking could be just as good. If the hook was concealed in the dressing this would help with weed, and if there was an argument fish could see the hook and would put most off. Then great. One down side to all this is you would restrict movement. So consideration has to be taken when tying this pattern. I think the only benefit here for me, would be a hook you can't see. Are you going to do one. Do you think the fish are put off by the hook.
Its had a load of fish on several waters, and not just stock fish. For me the main point is the lead. This really does work, and hook ups are more successful. I am sure there is a lot of different fluff could go on and work. But yes start with this one, see how you get on. Take care. Shaun.

Just got back to fishing after a break as my son is now interested in learning, I have got him on your channel too. I wanted to ask about your over glasses sun glasses, what make are they and are you happy with them. Many thanks and tight lines
If you are based in the UK I hope you both don't get disheartened as the fishing around the country is a bit tricky at the moment due to conditions. Get out as early as you can and pick waters with a bit of depth. The deep water which remains cooler helps maintain a lower temp. Lakes which are about 10' average depth should be avoided at this time. For most of the time we are fishing the morning period with floating lines. Single fly and 10' plus tippet. Patterns along the lines of the Diawel Bach. Or any thing around size 14 slim and sparse. We found a fast retrieve most consistent. The Glasses are cacoons. And yes very happy with them. A few of the boys got there's from America. I got mine from sport fish. Mind Sport Fish only have a choice of three. But if you go onto Cacoons site they will have a chart to work out which style is best for your glasses. Hope this helps. Oh and I am very pleased you have found our channel. Any thing you need to know just ask. Take care. Shaun.
Thank you for the time and tips, fishing is hard but we did have success at Elerdine Lakes. Looking for bigger waters near me now (Telford). Will check out the glasses. Thanks again, you’re a star!
Shaun, just knocked a few of these up as it looks like a winner, I've been waiting for the blue crystal flash to arrive - without having fished the fly I assume the weight being at the back will enhance the up/down movement on all retrieves. Keep up the good work, great entertaining balanced content. 👍
Spot on mate. Can't wait for you to get on the water with yours. My self and one of the boys was using them yesterday afternoon. A lot of patterns was failing. Gareth who was with me did get one on his Blue flash Damsel. But the Hays Black and Blue got him another three. Bare in mind fishing is at the moment very difficult. Three other chaps struggled. I had about 6 with it. The down side is that I lost 3. This hook should be doing better. But in all fairness I have had a few hundred with this pattern since working with it, and have only lost a hand full. I have only had one of the boys blank on it. But like he said. Its how you fish it. The more you work with it the better it gets. Can't wait to hear from you next. Oh intermediate line works best for me. And mess with the retrieves.
@@paulhughes7079 Hi Paul, yes Gareth has been very ill. A lot of this came from stress. I don't think he realised how much demand for his flies was going to be. He worked all the hours to try and complete orders. But there is only so much the body can take. No sooner was he out from the hospital and recovering, when he then ended up with covid. He has had the worst time ever. But he is looking at getting back on it again soon. I hope you can understand his situation, as he really is a genuine bloke.
I'm a local who lives in Letterston and was brought up in Hayscastle yet I have never fished it. I have always fished the western cleddau and after seeing your channel i want to give it a go. There is another fishery nearby and havent tried there either. Where do you recommend first? not on who you know but the quality of fish and features, toilets, tackle and food availability.
OMG. I fished the Cleddau for years and a good few of the boys have. Choosing which water to fish is better to mix it up. The stock is the same. The big difference is a mature lake or a new bold water. Hayscastle being the mature water. This gives you more variety and surroundings full of wildlife. Plus price is better suited to the angler. There is no tackle for sale, as most have there tackle. But if ever anything forgotten we will help. Bring your own food.
Really interesting video Shaun, do you think you get more hookups due to the hook staying more steady with the wire position? Or maybe because you were fishing it slow? I'm tempted to try a bead there instead of wire as I only have really thin wire atm. Look forward to the next video.
I wish I could find away of showing you all what I have studied with fish over the years. Even last week I watched a fish which I thought was following this same lure in. As it happens it was not following, but instead had my lure fully in its mouth and chomping. I could not feel a thing. The fish was moving at exactly the pace of my retrieve. As I lifted to set the hook, it just let go. Then turned away. But for the hook position in the water, yes I am convinced this is an improvement. The more you think about it and understand the more you will be convinced. I have fished this pattern at all speeds, and the result has been the same. The pattern will catch fish with a bead. But there are draw backs other than hook position. The pattern is designed for an intermediate due to it being lighter. Being lighter gives me more options on how it can be fished. I hope to cover this in a later video. Do the bead, and when you get the wire, give that a go. It will be interesting. Mind when you start trying this out, remember it takes time, as you will have to try them in many conditions to get a fair result. Can't wait to hear how you get on Brian. Take care mate. Shaun.
Not very good with materials, but I am almost certain you are correct. It does say can be used as a dubbing. Fiddly as shit, but worth it as it really does work well. Mind after a load of fish it does wear thin. But as I will always say this is more like an example. I am sure there is a lot of material that can work well. Most important here is the lead.
Not at the moment. We are trying to get an outlet. But it has to be reliable and quality. But it would be great if we can sort it over the next few months.

@@shaunfishes101 Is Gareth Wilson out of hospital now then? I've been waiting for him to send me some flies but I'd heard he was ill.
@@shaunfishes101 thanks for your response.
So you said any method. Does that include worm and spin or is it just fly? I will definitely be over. Is it open all year round Thursday to Sunday?
@@tomharries847 Sorry Tom, Any method of fly. All year mate. But if its any time soon. Make sure you have some dry flies.
Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 fascinating Shaun thank you.
Is the flash rite a dubbing
Not very good with materials, but I am almost certain you are correct. It does say can be used as a dubbing. Fiddly as shit, but worth it as it really does work well. Mind after a load of fish it does wear thin. But as I will always say this is more like an example. I am sure there is a lot of material that can work well. Most important here is the lead.
Do you sell these?
Not at the moment. We are trying to get an outlet. But it has to be reliable and quality. But it would be great if we can sort it over the next few months.
Sean bro send me your address and I'll send you a few lures mate I've been working on some for a while and they are proven fish catchers all the very best tightlines pal.
I am crap understanding computers. But I will get my son in law to help me. We can work on messenger. Looking forward to catching up.
