Mountain bike content focused on gear, destinations and insights.
Hey everyone my name is Sage, and I created TrailSage as a place to combine my love for production with my passion for riding. I'm pretty rough on my gear, and the trails I enjoy riding are technical, so anything I review must hold up to a pretty high standard. But in addition to reviews, I also create exciting destination videos. I'll also share some insights into the things I've learned, and experiences I've had on the MTB.
If you enjoy the content and would like to support the channel join the TrailSage Tribe on Patreon. Membership will get you access to extended cuts, ad free videos, and a lot of other extra perks. Check out the link below to learn more.

Are YouTube Memberships worth it for smaller channels?
If you were wondering if TH-cam Memberships are worth it, watch this video first. I tried it for six months and I have some strong opinions about it. Of course, your experience might be different, but I'll explain what my experience was like and what I decided.
As a small content creator, I was excited to see if TH-cam Memberships could help supplement the lack of ad revenue I was receiving. Unfortunately, I did not find Memberships to be worth the massive cut TH-cam / Google takes. So, after giving it several months I decided to make the switch to Patreon. And if you’re experiencing the same issues, but were worried about whether your members would follow you to Patreon, I found most of mine did.
I also cover some other ways I supplement my income by using websites like Buy Me A Coffee for donations and creating a merch store to sell branded products. While these don’t bring a lot of additional revenue, every dollar counts.
To learn more about Patreon check out their website below:

If you are interested in starting a Buy Me A Coffee account, find out how below:

I’m not sponsored by either one of these companies, but I have enjoyed using both of their services, and would highly recommend them to anyone. If you are using something else let me know if the comments below.

Jump lines and fist bumps, so much fun - Allaire State Park, NJ - Just Ride Ep. 33

If you are looking for progressive MTB jump lines and miles of smiles, then Allaire State Park in New Jersey has you covered. All of the trail side features are optional which makes this place ideal for riders of all skill levels. And the terrain is a mix of sand and dirt so it will be perfect in most conditions. If you are near Philadelphia, or in the tri-state area, I would highly recommend c...

The progressive mountain bike jump lines at The Pit in Allaire State Park are dope! I got a fantastic tour from my buddy Brian @BandE-MTB, and he took me to a bunch of icon spots for a day of sessioning. I was blown away by the quality of the features and variety of options. There will be a full video coming out soon that will chronicle the entire day, but here is a small excerpt from that ride...

Nothing is worse than coming back from a mountain bike ride only to find out that wind noise has ruined your footage. Did mine yesterday, landed on cement. I'm 62. Owwy.
Sorry to hear that Christopher, sending healing vibes your way. Good luck on the recovery. Sage
I had the same issue with the Eliminator… but 2 years ago. I hope they fix that problem.
Ugh sry to hear that Oli. I hope they fixed that too. Thanks for the comment.
I just did this injury this morning so I found your video very helpful in knowing what to expect. I already did my first road ride because I had to cycle back home the ten miles from the injury site. Ouchy!
Dang, I hate hearing that, but I'm glad you were able to get back home and you found the video helpful. Sending healing vibes your way! Thanks for the comment.
Chris here, I'm going down with the ship 100% commitment to being clipped in. Guess thats just another reason they call me Cap' lol. Brian rides flats unless he is on his single speed and needs that extra power!
Right on Chris! What clips are you using? What flats are Brian using?
@TrailSage both of us use crankbros
I’m recovering from the same injury and I certainly can relate to the recover process. I’m taking my first motorcycle ride through the neighborhood to get acquainted, then I’ll slowly progress to longer rides.
Thanks for the message Mario. Good luck on your journey back. Sending healing vibes. Sage
Awesome video! LGP is our home trail system. Hope to see you around here more often!
That's awesome Chris and Brian! I wish I lived closer otherwise I'd be there more often. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I had the same happen to me at 300 miles with my Butcher. Specialized warrantied the tire and I got a new one. I got mine for $40 on sale and if the knobs shed at 300 miles I can go through two specialized tires for the price of one maxxis
Ugh sorry to hear that Scott. And yes, excellent point! At that price just buy one good tire and be done with it, lol. Side note, I have had great success with the tires from American Classic. They are under the $50 price point and work just as well as the big tire brands.
My ILM helmet arrived today and love it. I usually fit a med size but heard these run alittle tight so went for a large. Glad i did as large fits me perfect. Also nobody mentions this but helmet also has the round spaces built in to fit bluetooth speakers.
Right on Vinnie. And thank you for letting me know about the sizing, I think viewers will find that helpful. Regarding the speakers, I don't ride with music so I was not able to test that out, but LMK how that goes.
Thanks for your insight and honesty Sage. I admire that you're full time on TH-cam. I've had to detach myself from it quite a bit, for my sanity. Making videos is hard!!! Patreon and buy me a coffee are common enough, and there are good reasons why so many people ise those... Keep on pushing for that YT career ✊
Right on Steph, I can totally relate to that. Side note, we just did a podcast on "Recovery" on my Ride and Laugh MTB channel and I had to re-watch our video and was thinking about you. Good times! I hope all is well with you and your family. Miss you brotha!
@@TrailSage Thanks Sage! Yeah good times! Hope you and family are well too!
I have to be honest: It would be very difficult for me to leave a content creator's TH-cam membership and join their Patreon, not just because it's more expensive, but also because of the (annoying) reason you mentioned of leaving a platform to go to another. To do so, I would really, really, really have to admire his content and simultaneously really want to help him. As a member of your Patreon, I think you already understand... 😁😁 But I agree that besides being difficult to monetize on TH-cam, their pie is HUGE. As you know, my MTB-Portugal channel is not monetized, nor do I know if it ever will be, because in addition to the difficulties imposed by TH-cam, I also have the added difficulty of being in Portugal, where the MTB community is sooooooooooooo unsupportive and critique with other portuguese (yes, I have more viewers from outside Portugal than from here). But regarding the difficulties of TH-cam, it is, for example, much easier to be an affiliate on Twitch (where I do Live Streams of my indoor cycling training) than to have the channel monetized on TH-cam. I earn very little there (just enough to pay your monthly fee on Patreon), but it is much easier to monetize than it is on TH-cam. I truly admire the content on your channel and I sincerely hope that you reach that point (whatever that may be) where your channel can be profitable enough for you to provide this excellent content in a self-sustainable and profitable way. Thank you for the amazing content you provide us, and I'm sorry for this long text.
Oh man, that's terrible that the MTB community in Portugal is not supportive. You make great content and it's a shame it's not being recognized and celebrated in a positive way. Why do you think that is? As for your support, your generosity and kindness are not lost on me. My life has taken some strange turns and I have some big decisions to make soon, but I'm happy to call you a friend. Thank you Luis!
@@TrailSage why? It's a cultural thing. Just watch this: Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest soccer players of all time, and half the Portuguese hate him... Why? I don't know...
@@MTB-Portugal We have to change that Luis. Portugal needs a huge injection of positivity and a mindset adjustment. Let's make it our mission!
Superb film. I love the entheusiasm and the plethora of advice and experience. I'm lucky enough to ride both a hardtail simglespeed snd a full sus bike on hilly (not mountainous) trails. A few thoughts: I have faster, more expensive crashes on the full sus. I'm a physically stronger ride than those i ride with so the SS is a leveler on the climbs and keeps my interest. SSing is great for core strength. I have a longstanding lower back injury and the additional core workout keeps everything toned and aligned. The SS is a pressure relief tool: if I'm slower than my mates, hey what do you expect? If i can keep up I'm a minor celeb! I can ride the same trails on the SS and full sus and have a totally different ride, so effectively i have twice the variety in my.local trails. Happy Singlespeeding all!
I love everything about this comment, you absolutely nailed it. I especially like the "minor celeb" part, lol. Thank you for the wonderful feedback. Sage
Loved that transition for the guest haha
Thanks Leah!
Yeah... 30% for doing sweet f#ck-all is a bit on the rediculous side Sage... There's "a company trying to make some money..." and then there's a "a conglomerate using it's near limitless power to screw over the little guy". Seems like you made the right move jumping ship mate... And hope you Patreon blooms!!
Well I didn't want to say it like that, but since you did, yeah, total money grab, lol. I don't make much on Patreon, but it's way better than Memberships, and I absolutely love my supporters. They are the BEST!
@@TrailSage Yeah... The 30% just doesn't seem right in any universe... A couple lines of code and that's about it... The rest of the "infrastructure" would be pretty much in place already.
My favorite tech trail in my home state of CT
I can see why, lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
One of the best on the East Coast
Completely agree Daniel. Do you have any other recommendations in CT?
Another vid to convince me to build a single speed out of my old steel framed mtb.
I think you will enjoy it Raoul. Give it a shot and LMK what you think. My buddy and I did a whole podcast episode on single speeds, if you are interested check it out here: th-cam.com/video/8HxKnFUxtos/w-d-xo.html
I feel like the memberships were a response to Twitch gaming streamers and other live creators moving more towards TH-cam for live content as opposed to other platforms. Not really sure if memberships vs patreon is worth it for non-live creators. I am only a paid subscriber for one patreon account, it's a wrestling news one. They have exclusive news stories and behind the scenes stuff as well as patron only live streams.
Oh interesting. Well regardless, for the content I produce Patreon seems to be the better choice. I can offer ad free videos, extended cuts, stickers and discounts on merch, so it has everything I wanted. Not sure if my members take advantage of everything, but for someone that is trying to do this full-time, their contribution goes a long way. #grateful
Looks fun!! It's happening!
Heck ya!!!
My brain struggles with elevated skinnies, I live on Mt Penn so I hop on them from time to time but I feel it even on a simple trail that’s exposed on one side…it’s all mental.
Totally agree! So much of this stuff is mental. How do you push past your fears? Do you have a process you go through, or do you just do it?
@@TrailSage I just go for it…but I always have knee and elbow pads on and sometimes they get used😂😂😂
@@rustychain9518 lol!!! Right on
I've actually disabled all monetisation on all my vids as it never really proved to be worth it. A few bucks a month didn't really seem worth the hassle with the German tax authorities 😂
That's a bold move Timothy. I'm doing this full-time so I don't have that luxury, but to be honest, I wish that I didn't have too. But a man's gotta eat right?!?! lol. Hope you and your family are well.
@@TrailSage I totally get it if you're trying to do this for a living. I hoped YT would be a good source of income, but it's been pretty depressing 😅 we're all good and healthy, thanks 😊
I'm not there yet, but this is intriguing and valuable information that could come in handy someday. Thanks for sharing, my friend!
Jen your channel is growing so fast... you'll be there sooner than you think. Keep up the great work! I always look forward to your videos.
Very interesting and insightful. Really great job explaining your experience and reasoning. Definitely makes sense to use Patreon over TH-cam.
Thanks for encouraging me to make the switch and for supporting me for the very start. #grateful
Do you feel these fit true to your regular size? Did you go a size bigger? I have wide feet just curious thanks for the review.
Hey Christopher. These fit true to size for me, but I do not have wide feet so I'm not sure how to guide you there.
Very interesting, Sage. Thanks for sharing buddy. Hope things are going well 👍🏻
Hey thanks Mark. Hope you and your family are doing well too!
Hey Sage, I wasn't aware TH-cam took 30% off the membership. That's a whole lot! For me it wouldn't even be necessary to add content on patreon though, you could also just give me your bank account 😉 No kidding, I support you because you try to take a step I am too much of a coward to take. I rely on a job and keep treading that hamsterwheel, so me supporting you is basically having a little stake in what you do 😁
Christian, you have supported me from the beginning and I can't tell you how much that means to me. I hope someday my channel becomes so successful that I will be able to travel to ride with you. I owe you like a 100 beers ;)
Great video Sage, that's very interesting, I haven't set up a channel membership as I don't know what added value I can offer a member other than the content I do anyway. But it was very good to hear your point of view and as always it was great to watch your video. Thanks for all the information and your content mate. Ride on
I can understand that Christoph, but I think you would have plenty to offer members. I feature ad free content, extended cuts, stickers and discounts on merch to my Patreon followers.
@@TrailSage Thank you very much for your answer and openness Sage, I really appreciate it. I will think about it. Have a great weekend and have fun on the bike mate
I have no experience with either but just from the numbers you showed here I think you made the right choice! Now we just need to get you sponsored by Ibis🫡
What's your experience with TH-cam Memberships? Let me know in the comments below.
Hey there, Sage! Your insights on TH-cam memberships versus Patreon are spot on! It's frustrating when you're trying to make a living off your content, and those percentages start adding up. Thanks for sharing your experience and shedding light on alternatives like Patreon. Fortunately, I only make the videos I publish as a hobby, I have no expectations from TH-cam... Best wishes, dear friend!
Frustrating is the perfect word. Thank you for the kind words Mihai. You make a great point "create with no expectations".
Great information for those hoping to "up their game". 🙌
Thanks Brian. I've been meaning to make this one for a while. I know it's not my usual MTB content, but I think it's important info for new content creators.
That size chart is wild… how many people in the 6’-6’1” range would be 170-185 lbs with a 38”-40” waist When I had a 38” waist at 5’11 I was 255… I have no clue what to pick

I rode SS about 6 years into mountain biking. Always curios about it and I was hooked. I have a f/s NICE geared bike 4 years on, but I kinda prefer my SS.
There is just something about the SS right?!?! Thanks for the comment Mike. If you are interested my buddy Dan and I just did a podcast episode all about single speeds. You can watching it here: th-cam.com/video/8HxKnFUxtos/w-d-xo.html
Just stay in one rear gear on the cassette and stick with it. Then shift another day. Best of both times.
That will certainly give you a taste of what single speeding is like. Great point Nathan.
Converted my steel Voodoo Bizango to a drop bar single speed and it's amazing especially with the Reynolds 853

Can you manage where your youtube video starts to play when you move your mouse over the thumbnail? Speaking of your own uploaded video. Some of my videos play randomly at the 1-2 minute mark of the video and I want to adjust that.
Unfortunately no Brandon. But I imagine managing previews is something a lot of creators would like to see. Google are you listening!!!

AMAZING! So much fun this video. What a fabulous jump line, I wish I had one like that close to home. And what beautiful footage you did there Sage, fantastic! I will subscribe to Brian's channel. Fabulous!!
Thank you so much Luis. I agree, every rider should have a spot like this near them. As for Brian, he is one of the most kindhearted human beings I have ever met and such a talented rider.

I have no control over the labeling but I would agree, it's more of an advanced blue. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Trail Sage. Loved your video on Browns Ranch. I ride there a lot. Anyway it’s driving me crazy. Towards the end of your video you went up a technical section of rocks with the black diamond deviation sign. Do you remember where you were or what trail this tech section was. I have been all over that place and cannot place that last section. It’s also on the pictorial from your leading page of your UT video. Thanks Loved it!
