The day the DNF caught up to me | MOZART 100 ULTRA MARATHON | 105 KM RACE
Mozart 100 2024. My hometown race. Overall it's the fifth year I've been participating in this competition, but always different distances. This year I wanted to conquer the longest of all races: the 105km distance. And I really thought I could. Even up to the last minutes.
Check out this video to find out what happened to me during this ultra race. I didn't see it coming. But I guess the races that kick you in the butt, you learn the most from. So I definitely learnt a lot from this one and the mistakes I made.
If you'd like to see more of the event organization, check out my Mozart 100 video from 2022 and 2023. In 2023 I completed the 80km distance successfully and the weather was great! Highly recommend this video.
Overall, it was a fantastic event - as always! Great organization and execution!
Congratulations also to all the finisher of the 2024 Mozart 100 races! It really couldn't have been more difficult!
Let me know if you have any questions or you also competed at Mozart 100 2024! Love to catch up and share experiences.
Thanks for watching! It's very much appreciated. :)
In case you're wondering what shoes I wore that helped me not to the get injured in these conditions... the ASICS TRABUCO MAX 3!
Review video definitely coming soon!

Nike ZOOMX ZEGAMA 2 REVIEW | Trail Running | Shoe review

New year, new Zegamas! The first version of the Nike Zoomx Zegama shoes have been one of my favorite trail shoes ever since they came out. They had a good fit with a bouncy Zoomx midsole, making them a fun trail shoe for the mountains. The only issue I had with them was the slippery outsole on wet terrain. When I heard that the Zegama 2 would get a Vibram outsole, I knew I had to get them and t...

    I know it must have been tough to being close to the finish but still far. It happened to me not long ago with a shorter distance (42km 2800+) when I had only left 10k to go but I had to pull the plug. Weather was very hot that day, wish I had some rain hehe. Hope the recovery went well and go back to your regular training. Sure next year you will redeem yourself. Cheers!

    Took me about 14h and change to finish the race and I don’t understand how can you say that it was really good job from organizers, it’s beyond me. Absolutely zero preparation for the weather, non of the aid stations had shelter, place to worm up or anything like that. I found a shelter at the 3rd aid station in some farmers garage and layered up, probably this move saved me. I saw people quitting and still had to wait outside in the rain for the buses for few hours. There was only one place in the second aid station to fill up the water ONE tap and probably 100 runners. St Gilet had no place to sit even :D. Lots of people take ultra running as a hype that was clear, vast majority was underprepared.

      Great job on your finish! Especially in that time and those conditions. 💪 Now that you mention it, i have to agree with you on the shelter situation. I had to take shelter in some storage room. It wasn’t even warm and almost no space to sit. Some Ultra races I’ve done in the past had tents with heating lamps, even when the weather was actually good. This would have helped a lot of runners that day. ( or all )

      @@chris.schmied It probably would have helped you a lot. I was 17th at the one moment and started to shake just like you, had 15 km till finish, wanted to quit, but guys at the aid station said I have to wait for a bus maybe 1,5h, so I figured it was about the same to finish. There was no shelter by the way! So i filled my two bottles with hot tea and wrapped my self in the safety blanket! That’s haw i got to the finish.. Good God what a nightmare that was, still shaking.

    Btw, have you considered resoling shoes? Some people have them resoled with a vibram zegama before they even break them in. Resoling can be a diy project for people with a belt sander (<30euros). If you have them done professionally, you're looking at <70eu. That should give 300km+ extra, with a superior outsole to begin with. So roughly 50% more shoelife, which pays off for a shoe that costs 160eu. The vibram zegama should perform a lot better over the whole life of the shoe too, with barely any wear until the end.

      @@chris.schmied Sorry to hear that! Well, i had to DNF too. In Tiefbrunnau, 32km. I missed the cutoff time, because the mud slowed me down way more than expected. I paced reasonably from the beginning (~6:00 min/km, flat terrain), then lost maybe 10min in the traffic jam in glasenbach, at the first singletrail. Beeing at the back of the pack, all the singletrails were a huge mess already. However I did fairly well and only after Hof-aidstation i realized that the cutoff could be dangerous to me. Filbling-mountain was a complete disaster then and i had huge problems with the mud. It was barely walkable and i lost so much time, despite feeling fit and motivated. The cold wind was really harsh and i have to admit that i was ill-prepared and freezing pretty badly. I slipped out in the mud and had a crazy calf-cramp! Then i arrived too late and got drawn out of the race. Half of the runners there where surprised they didn't even make the cutoff, because they felt they were doing ok for a 100k race. The cutoff was pretty unfair IMHO, as the 5 hours are reaonable for good conditions, but more on the tight side. Mid-pack runners who paced conservatively/reasonable in the beginning didn't make it that day. If anything, the cutoff in tiefbrunnau tempted people to rush the slippy downhill down. Anyways, it was a great experience nonetheless and i learned a lot! As a consequence, i bought some quality raingear from compressport and merino socks and longsleeves. I'm now motivated to train in the rain, which i tended to avoid previously. Another upside is, i get another year of good training before finishing my first 100km race. So i can aim for a good time, while having a good time ;) How was the race for you?

    Great video and great advice! For ultras in the Alps, especially longer races (200 miles) I very much prefer adjustable poles. Leki used to have a hiking/running pole that was called Leki MIcro Vario Carbon Black Series CLD (2019 version): it was foldable with only 207 grams per pole. Luckily I grabbed a few pairs when it got discontinued. At the time they also had the trail running Micro Trail Vario which was also foldable, adjustable but had the glove attachment system: it weighed only 195 grams. For some unknown reason Leki stopped offering trail running adjustable poles and the newer Carbon Black Series poles are heavier at 228 grams. For me, when you race over a lot of steep ground and longer distances adjustability is totally worth the extra weight which isn't that much if you have high-quality foldable poles.

    • @chris.schmied
      @chris.schmied หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree! I really enjoy my adjustable poles. (Which i rarely use cause I can’t put them on my vest) I mostly use them for long hikes. The ones from Leki you got sound like a good choice.

      @JohnM-xr6ch and 20 bucks more than any other comparable shoe. The grip was good and the midsole is soft but those should be a given on high stack trail shoes. I tried but I stopped liking Nike along time ago and this was a harsh reminder.

    Great video! The bonus tip was gold...I signed up for my first 100k, after only doing 50ks. (There wasn't a 50 miler that worked. ) Now I'm intimidated, excited/ nervous, and have more motivation to train than I have since my first 50k! I love to challenge myself, and get bored when something feels well within my reach. I'm just hoping I finish! 😂

      @chris.schmied personally probably yes I'd think so, just also in my mind at least looking to use the shoe more than just those events through the year and use em for trail runs as well. Feel like I'd only use the other option just for racing

    Big fan of your videos - partly what inspired me to enter Mozart 100 (light) this year! Can i ask, given that it is only 19 miles, would you advise poles for this race? I have never used them and wondering if it is worth buying for this race?

    Great videos! And thank you for getting some film of the aid stations! It helps me to have an idea of how they are set up. Ive been training with the Naak products in hopes of not having to carry as much of my own nutrition. Do you know, do they have the energy drink at every station? And are they mixed full strength? Im running Istria in less than two weeks!

    • @chris.schmied
      @chris.schmied 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks a lot!! Glad you like the vids :) I think they had energy drinks at almost every aid station. They come in cans, so they are not mixed. Good luck in Istria! It’s a great race. I will go back there one day again :)

    • @kevinshaffer8274
      @kevinshaffer8274 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Replying back in case anyone else is interested. Finished the Istria 110k, was a really nice event and it went really well! My strategy was to get about half my calories from food and half from the Naak drink mix at the stations. For the most part it was okay. As I expected the solution was diluted to about half what Naak says to use, which was fine since I wouldn't want it too strong. Towards the end though I think they were running low and the concentration was way down. What was worse is that at the last two stations the lemon flavor tasted as if it was contaminated with the savory broth flavored Naak powder which was nasty. Not the best way to finish off the day but it didn't really factor in my result as I had enough gels to carry me through. Overall a great event that I would highly recommend!

    Thx! I have run some (city) marathons and a some trail runs. Now I am going for a 34K with 1100m elevation. Never had a run with that much elevation. I am wandering if I should use (buy) poles. I run on vibram vifevinger shoes, I am not a pro, slow runner, the run is within 3 months

    • @chris.schmied
      @chris.schmied 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wouldn’t bother. 1100 m for 34 km is rather flat. Unless the 1100 m is one steep climb, which I doubt. You should be good without poles for that one :))

    Hi! I loved your video. I would like to ask you where do you recommend to stay? And how many days? Greetings from Costa Rica 😃

    • @chris.schmied

      You can stay anywhere close to Salzburg. It is easy to drive around in the area. There are unlimited amounts of hiking routes in this region. If you like higher terrain I would also recommend hiking the Steinernes Meer. There are several huts you could stay overnight as well. I would recommend staying for at least a few days.
