The Indian Mash Up - Super Meteor 650 Long term review - Accessories & Modifications
In this in-depth video, I share my journey with the Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 after 15,000 km of riding, including long tours and daily adventures. I discuss the incredible reliability of the 650cc engine, its smooth performance, and why it’s the best part of this bike. But I also delve into the critical comfort challenges, including the stock suspension and seat, and how I’ve transformed my bike into a touring powerhouse through key modifications.
From Hagon rear shocks to Sahara touring seats with gel inserts, a belt drive conversion, and practical Trip Machine Expedition saddlebags, I review each accessory and its impact on comfort, functionality, and long-distance touring capability. Plus, learn about the Bykology backrest, why I customized the seat myself, and my thoughts on aftermarket upgrades for Royal Enfield bikes.
For viewers in countries where import taxes make upgrades expensive, I encourage you to share your local solutions in the comments. I also preview upcoming modifications like exhaust systems and a new product review with an exclusive discount code for my loyal viewers.
This video is perfect for Royal Enfield enthusiasts, touring bikers, and anyone considering the Super Meteor 650.

Why is the Royal Enfield Bullet so Iconic? Is it Worth buying?
Good one, Teach. I'm happy with my Supermeteor, even with a few minor annoyances. Ride well. Cheers
Thanks. It’s a Marmite bike 😂👌🙏
Gran trabajo, sabrías decirme si se lo podría poner a la shotgun y donde lo podría comprar?
No sorry. It will not fit the Shotgun. For the Shotgun, there is a bolt on pillion seat available from Royal Enfield 🙏
Thank you so much for all the reviews. Please can I ask for your advice. Live in UK so pretty decent roads, plan on buying a used super meteor 650. Won't have any money left over to put into it. I weight 150llbs and plan using it for mainly short journeys with the odd long distance trip during nice weather, into Europe etc so high mileage trips. Would you recommend I forgot this bike due to the poor suspension? If so any recommendations? I love your honest opinions. I adore the look of the bike but comfort is a priority. Have you met anyone who thinks the touring set up version is comfortable enough? Thanks T
This Fridays review of a bike is right up your street. It maybe what you’re looking for. 🙏
@Teacher-T-Thailand can't wait 😀
Beautiful bags ,definitely going to get a set, just a few small adjustments by Trip Machine and the rain bags will work perfectly. Can you get the side racks from Trip Machine as well ?
Yes. Beautiful and practical. Yes the racks come with the saddle bags when you purchase them. 🙏
I only tighten an oil filter by hand and do not use the filter wrench. 1/2 to 3/4 turn should sufice. Over here in the states these quick change oil change businesses are notorious for tightening oil filters so tight they are impossible to get off without special tools. That filter is in a very convienent place for a quick change, heck even the intial do it yourself and save big bucks. Make note of every change and milage in a journal. I never go over 3000 miles without a change on every bike I have owned, but that is just me. Amazon must think the RE filter is gold and wants 22 US dollars. A Bosch 3300 or Fram PH9897 are more like 12 dollars. I sure other brands will fit also if you look at a cross reference chart. No torque wrench needed for the oil bolt as long as it has a good crush washer, just snug it a bit. I appreciate the lenghts your go to for this oil and filter change Teacher T, as a good many people will never have done a change before and one can save a lot of money and time by doing it yourself. I like that home made oil container, works like a charm.
Thanks for your detailed comment and oil filter recommendations. There is such a shortage of RE consumables. I struggle to get air filters and oil filters here. I think what happens is they are purchased by individuals in bulk to sell at a higher price in ebay and amazon, knowing they have made a shortage in supply. All the best 🙏
Nice one mate, met you at the MHS temple for the ceremony, hope to see you again next year if not before! Scotty.
Thanks Scotty. Hopefully this video gets a few more riders to join in also. All the best and safe riding 🙏
Thanks for the advice, fitted the standard height model and it has transformed the bike . Now enjoyable to ride!!
Doesn't it make such a difference! How the bike should have been in the first place. Enjoy 💪😁🙏
Nice review. Just what I was looking for 👍
That's great. Thank you very much. Have you decided on one? 🙏
@Teacher-T-Thailand no. Just entering the idea. I just bought a Harley last fall, but might sell my V-Strom to get a RE
@@versyschris ohhh. You have 2 lovely bikes there already 😂🙏
Do you have a video of installing this same camera onto a super meteor 650 please?
I don’t sadly, because what I did was fitted the 350 usb under handle bar USB to my 650, and just plugged the camera into that. A video very soon to be released maybe a better option for you also. Here is my usb install video 🙏 Meteor 650:- How to Install Meteor 350 USB to SM650 th-cam.com/video/LAvaoKEssQY/w-d-xo.html
#3 is the best....... i have booked the the same combination
Where do you live? You can buy mine 😂👌🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand I live in West Bengal, India..... I will get my super meteor 650 by January 2025
@sumitsarkar1799 I can remember the excitement. All the best 🙏
It is so frustrating when a motorcycle company gets it wrong when they are capable of better. My wife and I rented a Meteor 350 and rode it around all day. I ended up buying the Classic 350 for the looks (although the Meteor in not bad looking) but both bikes are equally comfortable for rider and pillion. How then can RE produce the Super Meteor 650 and get the suspension and seat so wrong. If they stuffed a 650 engine in the Meteor 350 they would have had an instant winner. Hopefully a refresh of the Super Meteor will come soon, fixing the seat, rear suspension and upgrading the speedometer to the new TFT found on the Bear and Himalayan.
You are right. A new revised face lift edition maybe the saviour. The Interceptor with the 650 engine is lighter, with much better rear suspension and comfort. Something drastically went wrong. Looks before comfort. Luckily my mods have sorted it out. 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand Should I decide to buy the current super meteor I will make the same mods. Thanks for sharing that information.
Had the super meteor for a year….changed to yss shocks and seat. My only thing is I rode a Speedmaster and the difference in these two bikes are ridiculous by the time you make all these changes you could get a better bike that comes with parts that don’t need to be upgraded
I would love to ride the Speedmaster. I’m on the look out for one to trial 👌🙏
Good editing. From vidiq comment section. Nice motor bikem grats success keep on grinding with passion consistance
Will do. You too. Many thanks 🙏
I had to put my purchase of a Meteor 650 as my broken femur developed into kidney dialysis ( just 1 month in and a long long story). I really enjoy your very practical reviews of the RE motorcycles and they help keep the dream alive. So far my dream machine matches yours, except mine is blue and has a nice after market exhaust! I must ask rather than tossing that rear shock, could you have someone do a section cut of the shock and identify a location for a fill hole and drain hole? I suspect the main problem is overly stiff suspension caused by too heavy shock oil. Well done Teacher, another great review.
All the best for a speedy recovery, and am glad to help keep the dream alive. Fingers crossed for reality soon 🙏
I use ct 100's shock observer it's fantastic
Honda CT100?
Well Mr T , that seemed to be a total succuss and not a word about the shocks so I am guessing problem solved , seats look amazing and as I said before ,,any good quality leather wax always works a treat . So enjoyable watching both of you enjoying your long road trip together and the food the scenery and of curse the Meteor .
Yes shocks behaving themselves. Even with added weight of touring and pillion. Thank you so much 🙏
Look at AEW exhausts. Good quality and inexpensive.
Yes I can add more Indian to the mash up 😂👌🙏
Hi Teach, watched your shock upgrade on the original video, but didn’t notice you’d used the 20mm. shorter version. I’d be interested to know if you lowered the front forks as well and if you didn’t, has it changed the handling, as it would’ve altered the steering geometry. Great video as usual. Enjoyed your last trip with Mrs.T from the comfort of my armchair back in the UK. an I’ll never moan about the English rain again 😂 merry Christmas or the Thai equivalent. 🍻 And one for Mrs.T. 🍷
Ha ha. Many thanks. Yes lowered the rear by 20mm. Made a huge difference in me being able to flat foot the bike properly. Never lowered the front. No difference in handling or geometry that I’ve noticed. Just a much better, more confident ride with proper comfort. The only downside side was not being able to use the centre stand. But this can be overcome by using a 25mm chock of work, and rolling the back wheel onto it. Merry Christmas to you too 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand 🤭Didn’t realise you were virtually challenged, in which case I’ll leave mine standard, as I’m a 33 inside leg. Thanks again
Thank you for adding the Turkish language Option
Ohhh. How does that work? On CC subtitles?
Why do you talk so much about loud exhausts and high handlebars? I don't see the point.
I’m just saying before spending money on them, your money is best first spent on rear suspension to save you back. I see a lot of bikes on Facebook groups with lots of money spent on them, but with original rear suspension. I just feel the priority is wrong way around. 🙏
I love how you refer to your wife as Mrs. T …so damn lovely… really love your no nonsense videos… keep them coming
Ha ha. Thanks. She is a gem. 👌🙏
Great video as always :) enjoying my SM650, just roaming the roads and getting to see Thailand when not working :)
Nice. Where abouts are you located?
@Teacher-T-Thailand a bit from you, I'm in Pattaya
Love your videos. I'd be a bit worried about using just one saddlebag, because leather will age differently. It still amazes me that RE makes them with a seat that is still too high. If you rode the indian chief and scout you'll see the difference.
Agreed they might. But it’s ok. I had the privilege to sit on the new Indian Scout a few videos about. Very tempted one day if I win the lottery 🙏 Bangkok to Ayutthaya: What Happens When Royal Enfield Meets Indian Motorcycles? - Touring S1 E5 th-cam.com/video/ddjZePdvfvo/w-d-xo.html
yes it's a great bike, you taught me something is that I didn't know when we finished running in. The engine is less hot because on my TRIUMPH it's still hot but hey I have 2000 km, so I have to wait.
Yes, those engines are tight when new. Things will loosen up and run less hot in time 👌🙏
You lost me. Unless something changed that I'm nor aware of. when a chain stretches there's adjusting bolt's on each side of the axle's to tighten the chain. What did I miss?
The adjustment allowed is not enough apparently. And not able to take a link out of the chain, as it is a fixed loop chain.
Hi teacher! Finally got myself a super meteor around 3 months ago and have seen all your videos. Absolutely brilliant so thank you for that! Regarding exhausts - I've fitted the second generation rhino racing exhausts from bykology (with the black crenellations) and can testify that they have an absolutely fantastic sound with a lovely deep but not overpowering bass tone. Well worth the money. They fit perfectly with no issues apart from one thing..... The Decibel-killers are extremely awkward to fit and the machining terrible on the thread for the retaining screw. The killers themselves are a bit basic too and seem more of an afterthought. Overall however, very pleased. Just ensure you have spare graphite seals if you are changing over before you start in case the old ones are fractured or crumbling when you remove the original silencers! Thanks again and keep up the great videos!
Yep, they are on my short list also. They do sound good, even on video, which I know is not doing justice. Thanks for the tip about the graphite seals. Mine to are also worn out because my stock silencers were removed 3 times during the belt drive development. Indian products are great, but there are a,so little minute details that let them down sadly. All the best 👌🙏
Excellent information!! I’m taking notes for my SM! Thank You!🙏
Is there is a good student 😂 Thanks for watching. It is a great bike once you have it dialled in 👌🙏
Hey TT, I forget, do you use the stock air filter cover or an aftermarket one? I like the sound of the aftermarket one, but starting to think that on it's own, it's causing more fuel use on mine. I am aware of how it likely changes the fuel mixture thus the fuel economy is likely to change, but it feels like it has changed significantly. Totally agree though, I love this bike, and plan on keeping it for a long time. I'll likely look at upgrading the shocks as they are alarmingly hard (setting 3 which seems best), maybe the exhaust at some point too but like the filter cover, it takes me down the fuel economy route so an electronic substitute may be necessary. Love the breakdown, really well thought out :)
Yes I still use the original paper filter, because the dust here and air pollution sometimes is very bad. I don’t think an aftermarket filter would work well in Thailands heat. More air flow, means bigger holes. And the DNA ones rely on constant oiling to aid the smaller particle filtration. It’s so hot here some days, I know that oil would evaporate quickly. And it’s so easy just to change the paper filter. But I do still have the snorkel on. I may just try a mod of removing the snorkel and making the intake bigger, but still use the paper filter. I found setting 3 the best on original shocks also. Stops the pain of sudden bottoming out. But a very hard ride compared to aftermarket shocks still. Thanks for watching. Ride safe 👌🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand Thank you, I have the paper filter too, but wondering on the aftermarket cover....will have to ponder that one lol
bel video come sempre, il mio prossimo acquisto saranno gli ammortizzatori
A worthy investment to save your back. All the best with it, and let me know how you think the difference is 👌🙏
I’m sorry, I just cannot bear listening to someone who constantly refers to himself in the third person. It’s beyond annoying!
I’m sorry to hear that. But I’m sharing an adventure where two of us were involved. And sometimes I have to mirror Mrs Ts speech, because English is not here native tongue. But her English is much better than my Thai. Better than most Scott’s also 😂🙏
THX again, my mod´s are Beltdrive (changed at 1500km) = TOP now 8000km , rear Shoxs /YSS and Exhaust silencers /Zard. Never want to change my Bike happy with it. Thanks Teacher T.😜
They are great bikes once you have them dialled in to your tastes. YSS I have to try, and the Zara looks good. Ride safe 👌🙏
The Royal Enfield Interceptor Service Manual that I have says to "Tilt the motorcycle on both LH and RH sides to drain the oil completely". This is what I do and it does drain a bit more oil. Not sure if the same applies to the SM.
I measured what I took out, and it was exactly 3.1 litres. But I should have removed the fill cap first as some clever people have pointed out, to aid speed of drainage. 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand Ok. So the SM engine is different from the INT.
@@TheSkeptic-lz2cc no, not much difference at all. But I don’t know how to tilt the bike left or right when it’s on its centre stand. I wouldn’t fancy doing the job on the side stand. 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand One does it carefully. It does not take much lean angle to get the extra old oil out. I stand on the same side that I lean the bike.
@ ok. I am due another oil change soon. Will give it a go 👌🙏
It's really interesting, I don't have any problems with the rear suspension!!! Put it up to number 4 and it's fine. I am quite light though. Would like the lowering shocks though.
Yes, it’s not every one who finds the problem. 4 and being light maybe the reason like you say. I also wonder if there are different production factories, with different standards. Because I could not stand mine from day one of ownership and tried every preload setting over long periods of time. Lowering makes a huge difference to short riders, and the clearance height hasn’t caused me any issues so far. 🙏
I put a pair of Hitchcocks slip ons for 600 squid, very happy with them indeed and they blend in nicely. Part number is 91191
I installed the RE sump guard *for the purpose of* helping to keep the oil filter and general undersides of the engine clean. It worked. 2023 INT650. It is quick and trivial to remove the guard for oil changes (or more fastidious under engine cleaning if you like).
I’m sure they are good. It’s just the air flow I worry about here in Thailand with some days being 40 degrees C. And it really doesn’t take that much cleaning if you have the right long soft brushes 👌🙏
Brilliant review Teacher T 👍. Watching your videos, especially this one has helped me list down the mods I need on my SM650, starting with suspension as you've rightly put. Love your content. looking forward to more. :)
Thank you so much. It’s a hard truth 😂👌🙏
Interesting that your first upgrade was the suspension, since I've actually found the suspension to be mostly good on the well maintained roads and highways that I am lucky enough to ride here in the US. The main problems I've found are the lack of comfort on the seat, the lack of heated grips, lack of cruise control, and the bike just being too short for me for longer distance US highway rides. I'm a bigger rider for non NA and EU standards, around 179 cm and on the heavier side, so on longer rides the bike starts to feel rather cramped in my personal experience. RE hasn't be great with OEM accessories either IMO, at least in the NA market. My first upgrade was the seat, then a windscreen (it gets very cold here compared to Thailand and even the UK) and then practical luggage in the form of the Trip Machine saddlebags and Shad47 top box. With the exception of the Sahara Seat rider backrest being useless and the metal tab for it getting in the way of my seating position, I think I did the best I could in fixing the issues I had without resorting to having to wire stuff in. It's an absolute joy to ride in good weather, and surprisingly practical for things like grocery shopping and day trips, which lead me to getting outside a lot more when the wind chill allowed me to do so. But sadly, as soon as I get this bike paid off I might end up splurging on a bike that is better suited to tackle the cold weather and long distance trips that the US can demand. I personally can't wait to get my hands on a Super Scout or a Scout Classic with some touring related upgrades. That being said, I don't regret buying my Super Meteor 650 at all, and would recommend it to anyone who loves the look and feel. At least I can probably get a decent deal selling it on the secondhand market if nothing else. I'm even considering getting a Guerilla 450 for commuting purposes if I get a new job that would demand having to filter past a lot of traffic, and I hope RE does really well for themselves in the future.
What a detailed comment. Thank you 🙏 When I sat on the Indian Scout I found it to be a small bike, but perfectly formed. The Chief is aimed a bigger riders, but also bigger wallets sadly. RE is going from strength to strength with motorcycle sales. Hence why other brands are struggling at the moment. On smooth roads I find the suspension fine also. But I’m sure they are good roads in America are much better than the uneven roads we have here in Asia, The long rain seasons don’t help pushing up or washing away roads. 🙏
How many times have you adjusted the valves? Manual says to do it once a year and after my last service at the dealer I had the opportunity to hear my bike running next to another SM and mine sounds like the tappets are chattering but I cannot tell for sure. Bikes only at 5500 km. There are videos online which have bikes that sounds like mine and the comment section is split on whether it is just the normal noisy RE engine or if something is out of spec.
Well when I bought mine, it was supposed to have been done at 500km. I do T think they did. Recommendations have now changed to 5,000 km I think. What I had my 5,000 km service done I requested and watched them do the valve check. It does need doing again now. I plan to do it myself soon and make a video. Too tight can cause more noise than too loose believe it or not 🙏
I personally love this ride
Ha ha yes it much so much fun to ride and film 👌🙏
The road from the "waterfall" past Phitsanalok is very popular for motorcycle riders up to the mountain with the morning clouds which is also worth a visit. Fresh tamarins grow profusely in this area back down to Phetchabun.
It’s certainly a lovely area and worth a revisit. Just a shame the journey was cut short. We did plan a mountain visit with early morning clouds. Next time 😂👌🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand Money matters 555, next time you will no doubt embark upon that fun ride. Stay upright, cheers.

Wow plz put this video teacher ❤
Yes, just press the link on the short. It will take you to the full video 👌🙏
What about the tires? Still Ceat on it?
Yes. Still original Ceat tyres at 15,000km and no signs of wear. Which is a little scary. Plenty of tread, but no stick. Have to go very careful on wet roads. I am considering changing them soon, even though pleat y of life left on them. Maybe that would soften the ride also? 🙏
@ wow, thats great. Maybe because its a heavy bike and not sooo powerful. Sure some „quality“ tires Like Conti, Michelin or Bridgestone makes the bike more nimble and mostly provides more comfort. We will see whats available ….. Cheers.
Really appreciate the upgrades you are explaining and how they work for you. If come this spring I decide to buy a SM 650, I will surly incorporate such mods. I came across a power increase this past week by using a more free flowing and lighter muffler and a more free flowing air cleaner along with fuel tuner you can get 54 brake horsepower, a big improvement over the oem 41 brake hp and considerable more torque. Some countries limit the 650 to only 46 or 47 crank hp, but not a problem here in the states.
Thank you. Yes agreed the HP is limited on the bike for legal licence reasons. But some people say just removing the snorkel from the air filter is enough to increase power. I will have to try it 😂👌🙏
worked like a charm. thank you!! if you do this in odometer (main) it switches between miles and km in my sm650
Ahhhh thanks. Great info 👍😁,🙏
As always, nicely presented! I love how you articulate, Mr T! 😀 I'm at 18K Kilometers now. I have noticed something really interesting going on with my bike. By mistake, I had turned on the bike overnight, which led to a full battery drain. I took out the battery, and got it recharged from a shop nearby. I have running it a few days after I reinstalled the battery, and funnily enough, I have noticed a slight bump in milage. It's roughly 23 KM/L vs 20 KM/L. I think the battery drain reset the ECU and the ECU might have been recaliberated. I'm hunting for aftermarket suspension units here in India, but sadly I couldn't find any. Before getting the hunter for Mrs T, please take a test ride of the Triumph 400 T4. I've heard good things about the bike. It's does not produce as much power as the regular Speed 400, but the way it delivers power is great. 🙂
I think the Triumph would be too tall for Mrs T sadly. 20kpl is not good. But yes, sounds like ECU. Some people recommend running the bike on Tik over only for 10 to 15 minutes to reset the ECU. 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand You mean leaving the bike engine on idling for 10 to 15 mins ? brilliant review btw 👍
@@Vikone7 yes just idling. No revving or ridding. Thank you 🙏
@@Teacher-T-Thailand how about Guerrila 450
@@amitchodankar1989 ohhh, I think that’s a very tall bike also. Mrs T is very petite. 🙏
Really a great Video as always , I was stopping the video every 5 minutes to take notes , Your a very practical man and you give very good practical advice ,like treating your saddle with lather wax to help water prove it ,I have always done this and YES it works . The saga with the seat was so interesting to watch you resolve it over time and you did it , well done . Since the Brits pulled out of Europe we don't buy anything form there anymore due to the import tax ,so for me ,I buy in Europe or now in far flung places like Asia or India ,but Europe is the best as I live in the European union. So keep doing what your doing ,its brilliant .
Thank you so much. I have to be practical, because English teacher wages in Thailand are very low. Every Penny or baht counts. But yes, with a struggle, we got there. 😂👌🙏
Good afternoon Teacher T. What an honest appraisal of the Super Meteor 650. Since last year I have spoken with twi SM 650 riders, as we do. Those rear suspension units really do let this bike down. At 40mph I'm often bounced right out of my seat riding the crap country roads in Hertfordshire. No problem whatsoever with the front end, but how my grandson laughs watching me doing my bum shuffle to establish my riding position only to get bounced back out of my seat again! He doesn't have this problem on his Kawasaki Volcan 650 S! That speaks volumes between the handling of both bikes and we both weigh in around 83 kilos. Having the touring seat I find long distant riding fine, for me. And no seating complaints from the passengers, unless considering the back support is a little low. I must confess that if my RE has a limiter fitted, then I've not ridden it hard enough to find out. Regarding head butting between gear changes. I keep my chain a tad tighter than recommended by RE, about five mm tighter! I quickly noticed rust creeping in on the chain, so after every wash I WD40 the chain before putting her back into the garage. Then a gentle wipe off before applying chain lube. Over 5,000 miles later, no rust. I've always felt oil is the heart of any engine. With winter in the UK I will be doing more short trips. I have about 1,000 mile to go before the next oil change. So a new oil filter was installed along with fresh synthetic 10/50 oil. Before my summer ride to Cornwall again she will have her full service coz she's worth it. And with more short trips on the cards a dribble of Redex when I fill up, coz I'm old school and old habits die hard. But new rear shocks are going on after Christmas 👃. In the meantime time happy safe cruising sir 👍...
Thanks again Les. Yes the Vulcan S 650 is such a comfortable bike out of the box, compared the Meteor 650. But since changing the seats and suspension, the Meteor is now equal. So yes treat yourself to new shocks, you will be so pleased you did. I return home to Cornwall for a few of months in March 🙏

@@Teacher-T-Thailand yes you are right Royal Enfield’s are notorious for their rear shocks lights and seats… hopefully they rectify it with your feedback and many others in time
@@gsoni79 let’s hope so, but I think I’ve ruined my chances of ever being invited to any press launch reviews 😂🙏
Hi, love your channel, in this video you asked for exhaust suggestions. Well I can highly recommend the Rhino Racing stainless steel exhausts. They use the same brackets as stock exhausts unlike other brands and they look and sound awesome. I have fitted other makes and seen other makes and Rhino are in my opinion the very best you can buy. I also fitted the belt drive as your recommendation and loved the benefits. Kind regards Ron.
Thanks Ron. They are on my short list 🙏
Are those Rhino exhaust disgustingly loud and obnoxious, or are they a little louder pleasant base sound? I know they are lighter.
I’ve owned Harleys before and they are not loud like them. I think they give a pleasant base sound and add character to a fantastic engine. They look very smart also, I will see if I can send a photo of my bike with them fitted.😀
