The Untamed《陈情令》and the Witch Archetype | Video Essay
In honor of Wei Wuxian's birthday, MXTXober, and Halloween, here is an interpretation and analysis of our favorite necromancer in terms of the Witch across history, belief, and pop culture.
A couple notes:
- In this video I pronounce "Taoist" with an aspirated "t" when it should be pronounced more like "Daoist." Mea culpa.
- My Chinese pronounciation is generally inconsistent in accuracy. Heritage speaker problems.

Excellent video! I really appreciate that you stand the ground and reject this cultish depiction of paganism in art, however, I’m not certain whether our modern western interpretation and practice of pagan religion can be enough of an argument to change the historical paganism perception. Our modern individualistic society produced modern paganism, but even to this day people in non-western countries live as close communities where everyone and their dog knows your every move, so Midsommar is not far from possibility of such society to become a cult. We cannot hide ourselves from the past, we need to accept it and move forward to be better than our ancestors.

You put exactly what I was thinking into words!: “This film doesn’t understand Jo and it doesn’t care to. It just wants to project its own modernity on her and the whole story. It’s more interested in being a feminist manifesto than telling a coherent story with consistent characters. And it had to trample on multiple characters to get there.”

Saw 5 minutes of the feminist trash and idiocy. They say they are poor but live in an anazing hosue, have a fucking maid, massive amounts of food that they can share, huge numbers of lavish clothes, the ability to sit around all day and do nothing but talk like teenagers and seem not to have a care in the world.

Honestly, while the movie was great, from everything I read about Ian Curtis from his band members, his actual personality was not at all like in the movies. Everyone who knew him described him as a laid-back, polite, friendly dude who sometimes had bursts of anger, while this movie portrays him like that brooding dude stereotype. I guess the lead singer of a band with dark lyrics being an easy-going, friendly fellow doesnt fit the image. So while the movie looked great, it felt like trying to live up to an image rather than the actual person.

There's one ironious point you make in regards to Christendom, namely : you talk of human sacrifice like Christians do that after flashing an image of Jesus Crucified. Remember, there was no christian church at that time and the ones who crucified Christ were the Romans pressured by the Sanheadren. Christans nor Catholics requier human sacrifice and the mystical body of Christ that, we who are Catholic, receive is from transubstantiation which is a rheological belief in a change in bread and wine that is not sensible but is mystical ; that change being the beciming of bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.

I was conflicted when watching this movie because it was filled with actors that I literally cannot stand: Laura Dern, Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson. On the other hand, I love Florence Pugh, I think she's a brilliant actress and I honestly think she stole the show in this one, as she usually does. I also cannot stand Jo's character as a whole, but I did like Winona Rider's version of it. Ronan, on the other hand, makes Jo's character obnoxious and hard to relate to. She comes off as a pick-me girl and she doesn't really understand feminism as a whole, she's just selfish overall. I also love Claire Danes, she's been one of my favourites since Romeo+Juliet, she's a great actress and portrays mentally strong women very well. Overall, the movie was boring, the only thing I loved was Laurie and Amy's love, that's usually the best part of this novel, in my opinion.

Awesome analysis! And for all Greta Gerwig's talk of honoring Louisa May Alcott's intent by putting these metatextual scenes in the movie, she doesn't appear to have done much research beyond Louisa not wanting Jo to be married. The film presents the book as this big passion project Jo has to fight for, and the idea of writing about women's issues as this thing that had never been done before, with that strawman publisher not thinking anyone will want to read it. In reality, Louisa was told to write the story BY Thomas Niles, who said a novel about girls would have wide appeal, and her father agreed. Louisa didn't want Jo to be married, but then again, she didn't want to write the book in the first place Making a video on this film myself now and a detail that I only just realised was done so poorly compared to the 1994 version - the Christmas breakfast In the 1994 film, the girls hear about Marmee attending to the Hummels, and at first think of sending them something too, eventually coming to the idea of sharing their breakfast with the Hummels entirely on their own, and making Marmee proud with how they selflessly volunteer it. In this film, Marmee makes the girls do it, which makes it read a bit flat

This was such a great and interesting video essay and I agree with everything you said! MXTX is such a good writer and the way her characters are all multi-dimensional and complex just draws you in and forces you to examine the way morality is viewed by others. While there's no direct equivalent of a witch in chinese culture, Wei Wuxian is certainly written with those influences in a very realistic and interesting way. You sympathize with him and want to just SHAKE HIM to make him understand how stupid he is sometimes. I love it all

The really dark thing about Ian Curtis is that he didn’t have that out of the ordinary childhood no dark past or hidden trauma so all that darkness in his songs come from within him not a horrible tragedy in his youth it was his relatively normal life which is probably why he was so obsessed with the darker side of literature

Here are the young men, the weight on their shoulders Here are the young men, well where have they been? We knocked on the doors of Hell's darker chamber Pushed to the limit, we dragged ourselves in Watched from the wings as the scenes were replaying We saw ourselves now as we never had seen Portrayal of the trauma and degeneration The sorrows we suffered and never were free Where have they been? Weary inside, now our heart's lost forever Can't replace the fear, or the thrill of the chase Each ritual showed up the door for our wanderings Open then shut, then slammed in our face Where have they been?

A little interesting fact on your comment about Natalie Curtis's POV in the movie (just being an enigmatic figure in her life) is that despite that, Natalie seemed to have no negative feelings towards Ian. In her own review of the movie on the Guardian (since she did write for them), she explained her criticisms of the movie on how she felt they never really went more into detail about Ian as a person and such, however she did admit that she, in her own words, is "protective of her father", arguably still loving him even if he was just a small figure in her life, even if it was because his life was cut short as she was born (she was born literally a year before his death in 1979), although I think Deborah did argue that Ian feared holding Natalie due to his epilepsy.

I've known of Joy Division for well over half my life by this point, so I've gone back and forth with Control a lot over the years. I've let a lot of the historical inaccuracies go by this point because it is a movie that has to cram roughly four years into two hours, so I'll start by talking just about Ian Curtis. By all accounts, he seemed to adapt his attitude and behavior based on those around him, so he could at any time be the husband/father, the happy-go-lucky lad in a band, or the tortured artist to his musical peers. By the end, no one really knew who the "real" Ian was, and it's even doubtful he himself knew. Deborah knew him longer than anyone outside his family and maybe even knew him the best, but she still only captures a fraction of who he was in her book Touching from a Distance. Control as a biopic is extremely skewed in her perspective, much to its detriment. Ian wasn't all gloom and doom, wasn't always crying, didn't always express his grief and guilt about his extramarital affair. He had a wandering eye with groupies and he laughed same as his bandmates did ar a giant turd in a toilet at the Open Air Festival, August 1979. There's not enough of the "lad" part in Control. Even the intro scenes where he's taking pills and dressing flamboyantly feel too understated. In lots of ways, he feels like the "romantic popstar hero" of legend rather the complicated, multifaceted, deeply flawed young man he really was. However, I do appreciate Control for its technical aspects. Sam Riley doesn't have Ian's piercing blue eyes, but he does have the dancing down. It was such an excellent, authentic decision to have the actors learn and play Joy Division songs for real and film their performances in order, leading to a sense of evolving musicianship as the band went on. Big range between "Leaders of Men" and "Disorder" in the film, accurately reflecting JD in real life. The aesthetic feels genuine, given all the most revered and famous real photographs of Joy Division were in black and white, not to mention the consistently great framing which adds a lot of visual storytelling. One example of this is at the end, when Bernard, Peter, Stephen, Gillian, and Rob are sitting at the pub table. Bernard is facing the front of the camera because he would become the "frontman" of New Order. Little stuff like that adds great rewatchability to Control, despite its grim subject matter. The ending is wonderful, too. Deborah didn't actually scream for help into the neighborhood as portrayed in the film, but the actress doing so does fit the devastation and regret that followed Ian's passing. "Atmosphere" playing as the smoke rises from the chimney still gives me chills just thinking about it. So these days, I can say that while I don't love and would definitely change a number of things about it, I like Control a lot. It's a very special little biopic.

I thought it was an intense garbage. Joe's portrayal was insufferable and the other sisters are utterly forgettable except for Florence Pugh who gave a good performance which was my favorite between her and Timothy, but it made me cringe to my gut how she was literally a 20 something 12 year old. I really enjoyed the 2017 Miniseries adaptation. Marmi played by Emily Watson was top notch and Beth's death scenevwas so beautiful and tender it brought me to tears, literal sobs.

This was such an interesting video essay! Wei Wuxian is such a fascinating protagonist, his life was so tragic, but I'm glad he got a second chance at happiness. In a western story he would've easily fallen into the anti-hero trope, but his character is treated with far more care in the untamed/MDXZ. It's such a mirror to reality how higher powers demonises the "other" or anyone who stands against imperialist society and doesn't have dogmatic mindset.
