Three-Body Problem is amazing. I understand your motives for not wanting to read him but you are really missing out
Personally, I feel nothing but sympathy for people who support the party line in authoritarian countries THEY ACTUALLY LIVE IN. It has a totally different feel to it than people who support authoritarian countries they've never had to actually live in or even visit. Those who actually live there usually have a wide range of reasons why they can't or won't criticize the government. It's a scary situation, knowing that the totalitarian government you're living under can ban you from entering it and thus ever seeing your family again.
Liu introduces fundamental concepts for mankind via his books. This books are shaping humanity's meta-physics.
How can you say that you wont like something, if you dont know what is it all about? Or even more important, why do you talk about something you dont want to try it?
Shouldent it be a waist of time for you?
Liu presents authoritarianism in realistic ways, but he doesn't treat it like a positive thing in his novels. It is disappointing if he truly has taken that position on the internment situation though. I need to look into it more.

Sci-fi with Chinese characteristics
Totally agree on the contemporary romance opinion. One of my favorite historical romance writers also writes contemporary. I have reread her historical several times, but I DNFed the contemporary after like 20 pages. I don't like reading about modern day unless something wild is going on to elevate it.
we‘ve never had anti-uyghur education growing up. the Chinese people like you are normal people. we have feelings. if we see cruelty we will feel bad！we are humans too！if we see genocide forced labor we will let the world know. so far no such evidence has been shown. you are basically saying we are inhuman.
Uighur camps are happening, and there is plenty of evidence. If you deny, you're *inhuman*, what else are you? Over 1 billion people and you are ruled by an authoritarian government, you can't even stop that, what will u do about the camps? nothing.

2. you should really do some research on your own before making such strong accusations. you can't trust your media 100% right? Do you understand that? At least search for "mosques in China" before making such statement?

I've never liked a Sarah J Maas book and I LOVED Crescent City. I don't know if she got knocked over the head or what, but it's a way different writing style than ever before and super lovable characters
Your loss. The 3 body problem is one of the most fascinating pieces of scifi one can read in our time and covers way beyond the concept of ‘countries’ and petty, transitory political beliefs and strifes. Everyone is subject to a bit of conditioning by their own time and social environment just like you’re of your own, but great ideas can be timeless, and those books have a few. If you can only read from an author of unimpeachable characters or political opinions you agree with, you’d have little original or interesting thoughts yourself.
Absolutely, I just simply don’t want to read from genocide apologists in particular :) Just because that sort of systemic oppression doesn’t outweigh your ivory tower of so-called “great ideas” doesn’t mean it’s like that for other people. There are many, many other Sci-fi authors I can read who do not actively repel me
@@Emiloid How sure are you that a genocide is actually happening? Genocide is a rather strong word, actual genocide has taken place in western countries but saying that China is committing genocide against Uyghurs seems too strong of a statement in my opinion. I don't know about your stance but if that is the case you might as well look up all of your authors' histories and remarks they have made in the past. Quite sure they aren't all saints.
@@96515325 shhhhh she obviously knows more than ppl who are living and experiencing things in their countries...I'm surprised if she also abandons 90% of western classical music, since most composers are supporters of Imperialists (the worst kind) and nearly half of English written word. I firmly believe Liu Cixin is a genius and expecting him to be a mouth piece of Western media is unfair since he lives in China (no mater the veracity of genocide for which there is no evidence so far) and to speak against CCP might be not a good idea at all

Like Herbert von Karajan as a conductor was one of best in the world except for his Nazi problem. I had a Jewish friend, whose parents were in and got through concentration camps, who made it a point to hear von Karajan when she was student in the 1960s. She was a symphony musician at one of the top 5 in US and went Julliard. I asked how she could or why would go to hear him and she told me, "He was the best." I am not Jewish but have avoided his music, however, when I have heard it on the radio, it is beyond well done. I could not find common ground with her on that except on conducting itself.
There are a lot of people with terrible views on things and what do you do about their art or science? Like Woody Allen or the scientist Erwin Schrödinger are examples. Nara Leão the Bosa Nova singer is another. She pioneered that music and that sound with Jobim. D.W. Griffith in film is another example of a persona non grata.
So what do you do about them or their art?
I do want to try red white and royal blue but I also completely understand why you wouldn't want to read it?? Ahaha I remember reading princess diaries when I was younger! I like classics too but I don't want to read Ulysses at all D: I get it with SJM as well. I was so bored in the third book as well. And I won't be finishing the ACOTAR series... and won't be reading crescent either >.> I'll probably finish ToG because I have them all...

Why correlate politics and literature? People will have different opinions, just as you would like to believe American-style government propaganda. Expressing hatred of other people's views on the internet doesn't help, except to be an internet hater.
I understand your position on Cixin Liu, his public takes on the Uyghur are not defendable. However (and trust, me I take no pleasure in using that word), he never showed that kind of zeal promoting it. He's been pressured to talk about it. If anything, he tones it down to be accepted by the west. He has awkwardly tried avoiding discussing politics for the longest time. He is already an accepted writer in China and already has the public weight to criticize the cultural revolution (in the first chapter of the 3 Body Problem no less) with no repercussion from Chinese authorities. At the end of the day, his 3 Body Problem trilogy is a paranoid rewrite of Flatland with a hyperfixation on hard science. Which is enjoyable if you like stuff like Asimov and Clarke, but hardly a call to genocide. The politics in his books are nothing if not flagrant garden variety hobbesian cynicism. People kill people because, bleuh, that's life. Shitty, I know, but not a unique subtext in literary history. Eeeeeitherwho, there's plenty of great books out there so I totally support your decision to look for something that doesn't ring unease to you. Let us know if you find cool works along the way.

For Gail Carriger, haven't read Parasol Protectorate but I can say the YA series, Finishing School isn't heavy on romance! There is a romance, but I felt like it was the B or C plot (granted I do like the love interest so maybe I'm a bit bias). It's a prequel to the Parasol series as far as I'm aware.

I'm not likely ever to read Ulysses either. Whenever I come across it my life suddenly feels very short!
