I also thought that The Song of Achilles was just fine bordering on meh, and yet that did not stop me from buying a super cheap audible copy of Circe. So I am hugely encouraged that you felt it was an improvement! That book has been languishing in my library unread, but I might actually start it now. Also huge congratulations on getting through Der Vorlese (I might have spelled that wrong - it's been a while). When I was in college I could read 60 pages of an English text an hour, 40 of French and a mere 20 of German, it's so slow and complicated (waiting for all the verbs at the end of the sentence). I rather like the dislocation of reading in another language, though I have shamefully done very little of it since ceasing to teach. But a person does need strong motivation to get from one end of a book to the other! Well done you!

I do recommend Circe, it was a great witchy read! Reading Der Vorleser was such a shock for my brain, because I forgot how German likes to embed all these subordinate clauses inside its sentences - it’s a way of delivering several levels of information at once, but is also a pain when you’re waiting for the main verb to show up! Sometimes the parsing got so difficult I’d cheat and plug the entire sentence into Google Translate haha. But the book had been sitting there making me guilty for years so I sat down and decided to just read it!

Is The Snow Child based on this (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Snow_Maiden) or this (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Snow-child)?

      The Snow Child I think?

I 100% get what you mean with The Poppy War trilogy only really having one feasible ending. And i think that is why I wasn't like totally sobbing when Burning God ended. Cause I had a feeling it was coming. Great ending, but it felt too "right" for Rin as a character for me to be too heartbroken. Because I know that was probably the better ending for her all things considered.

I was super sad when I first read it, because I was invested enough in Rin to want her to be okay, but as I thought about it more, then I felt like it was the most logical ending that wouldn’t end up breaking the world - because you know she was totally headed there! As much as I wanted her to be happy, that just wasn’t who she is 😢
