  • I'm doing what I've wanted to do for a while - talking about my favorite series I watched in 2020 - The Untamed! I talk generally about the show's high points and a bit about how the series has influenced me as a witch. There is so much to say about this show and there was no way I could talk about every single thought I had while watching it, so I'm definitely thinking of making more content around it in the future!
Also, a disclaimer - I know a lot of my pronunciation of a lot of the Mandarin names is strange, and I probably didn't get the tones right some of the time. I don't speak Mandarin natively, but I am working on my speaking skills at the moment.

I think the sibling rivalry, love+hate relationship between Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng is very deep too. The fact that they did sacrifice themselves for each other. I wish JC would let WWZ knew that he sacrificed himself when WWZ was about to be captured by the Wen guards.

I love your take on Wei Wuxian's character. you hit the nail right on the head! i always say he was an intelligent, mischievous, greatly misunderstood, victim and target of malicious schemers and manipulators and envy of his peers and JiangCheng's spiteful jealousy and other clan leaders. people adore and fear him at the same time and greatly covet his Stygian Tiger Amulet. The Untamed took me on a wild ride and i'm still riding the bucking horse. It is a really really awesome series, fast becoming a legendary classic. Thank you for your review. you have great insight into each character.

Great review. The Untamed is my favorite show. My heart still aches whenever I hear the title song. This show has set my expectation for C drama so high that I literally could not watch another show without comparing it to The Untamed.

Oh I feel this! It definitely feels like I've peaked in C drama land with The Untamed. I'm watching and enjoying Guardian right now, which is also a BL drama, but it's still nowhere near the same standard of writing. I've heard Word of Honor is good though?

    • @qVICKYq

@@Emiloid I haven't watched Guardian but would love to check it out. I've only watched a couple of episodes of Word of Honor, the two main lead characters definitely have very strong chemistry between them, but I think the overall production quality is a little bit disappointing.

@@Emiloid I don't have any problem with directing, I just feel Word of Honor's style is a little bit unpolished. But I only watched a couple of episodes, so it's just my first impression.

Great review! I love how you kinda summarized Xue Yang's personal traits: he just want candies, he want his regular kills and he want some attention LOL spot on! Also agree with your analysis of Jingguangyao, he is also the best villain character I have seen in many years, he is capable, vicious but also reasonable, people can understand where he come from and feel bad for him even knowing he is the person behind everything.

Great review, I agreed with everything you said about this show. Its one of my favorite drama of all time. Of course its not perfect, lots of issue and problem with cgi and action scene. But the emotional rollercoaster of the plot and acting really made the drama special and touching. I have watched and love many dramas that are popular such as eternal love, ashes of love, love 020, love and destiny, and many more, but none of those touch me as deep as the untamed. There are many theme in the untamed that you can relate to such as what is good and bad, what is black and white and gray, the pro and con of selflessness, and bully and alienation. Love how you mention weiying was alienated by society just bc he is a wizard uses dark magic that are unacceptable to everyone view. Love the way the show humanize the bad guys in the drama. Its show that not everyone born to be evil, but things in life and circumstance leading them to be who and what they are now. Its humanize everyone, showing their strength and weakness, their changes, and motivation to their action. I ended loving all the character, esp our two main leads. Thus, even after two years, this show still have a very deep impression and always special in my heart. You should check out the new drama word of honor. This is another bl that is currently release. It is very popular in china now and according to people it might have the potential to be popular as the untamed. Check it out and see how this drama got away with china censorship. Lots of flirting, touching, and chemistry between the two leads. If the untamed love is subtle, this new drama is outrageous straight in your face romance. For myself, I enjoyed watching the drama. It is entertaining and fun to watch these two flirt onscreen. Its bring laughter and smile to my face. But unfortunately, its doesn't give the special heartstring feel like the untamed does for me. So, check out what all the fuss going on with this drama and let us know what you think

I have been pouring through yt looking for a review that discusses characterization, cultural aspects, critique of storyline etc- and found yours (seriously, there is not much on the ground asides from the vast crack vids and bl shippers- frustrating). this was such a great video! it was refreshing to hear non phonetic pronunciation (has been painful), interest in story and great description of it, and a great summary on the series and what you thought of it. I'm on ep 22 now (late to the show, i know!) and am getting more and more into it with each ep. Thanks for this vid (liked and subscribed!) and keep up the great work. (i linked my crew to it also as we all share our meta media about it and they've received it well also!!)

I appreciate ur review. It's very enlightening. I share the same thoughts about witchcraft and the like..since I started watching the Untamed, I couldn't stop listening and watching positive reviews. The show was magical and I was enthralled. The characters as quite astounding..esp'lly the two main chacters. Love it and would like to watch their succeeding shows. It's just amazing. There's no vulgarity in it. The love scenes were delicately handled. The director was fantastic. More shows of these genre.

I really enjoyed your review! Thanks for sharing about your magic. Especially your point about witchy men, that hadn’t occurred to me before! Tbh I did enjoy the novel too, but the The Untamed drama adaptation is my favorite of all. I liked how the slow-burn romanticism and subtle relationship visual cues added into the impact of the relationship. But by ep 50 like I would’ve sold my kidneys for them to hug for real like once. Yeah, Sect Leader Yao especially is totally the crowd-bullying character - every time he opened his mouth I wanted somebody to smack him.

I love this reviewed. I watched The Untamed twice (the second time immediately after the first round was done) and watched this review twice, too, lol. Two years later, I rewstched The Untamed and rewatched this review, lol. The Untamed is still the best Cdrama I've seen and I've yet to come across anything as well-written. Wei Wuxian is the most well-written character I've ever come across. His values, beliefs, weaknesses, personality, and so many more are fully fleshed out.

I so understand you! Chen QingLing is my absolute favorite fantasy drama of all time! Became a fan of Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, they did such a great job portraying their characters ❤💚.
The multiple names were not that confusing, neither was the intricate plot too hard to follow. The Untamed was my very first c-drama so why I keep reading these comments about it being difficult to follow, hard to understand. Are people too hung up on the American way of doing things? I don't know. The Untamed is a joy to watch no matter what.

    Love the costumes.
Of course, this is one of the lower budget production and what they could do is great. The gay hint is very cleverly inserted in the drama e.g.
when Lan Zhan got drunk and gave Wei Ying the roosters

It always excites me to discover stories from a group that I've not encountered. Discovering anime and eventually manga was a large part of my childhood. Then later I found out that korea also had manga, manhwa. I found one beautifully drawn chinese story called (or translated to?) heresy that stopped mid story.

Guardian is a show I'm watching and enjoying at the moment - it's an episodic paranormal crime type show, with some genuinely creepy moments. I would definitely say The Untamed has a lot of horror elements - although there are some zombie-like moments. It's more like bodies being controlled by dark magic and malevolent spirits rather than your traditional zombie, but it depends on your preferences! Also there's this film called 'The Yin-Yang Master' that's out on Netflix that seems to have some more demonic horror elements

Stop telling me who “my people” are. I’m a HongKonger-American. Most mainlanders would probably never accept me as one of their own if I went over there

    • @supahsmashbro
      @supahsmashbro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Emiloid ? Hong Kongers are Chinese. Why wouldn't they accept you? You're Chinese, they want good ties with Hong Kong(ers)...to undo the mental colonization and the anti-Chinese indoctrination imposed upon by the British and Americans. You're completely mistaken, mainlanders don't dislike Hong Kongers...at all. Quite the contrary, especially compared to the anti-mainlander sentiments from Hong Kong locals. In the future we will see ties become even closer. Less West/white worship, more pride and optimism. I apologize in advance for this rant, I just want Chinese people to see past anti-China demonization and be proud.
I encourage you to visit China when you can. The most funded and sophisticated propaganda (Western, military industrial complex-funded, CIA/NED, etc.) on the planet shelters people from seeing the country accurately as people would begin to see their own shortcomings and ask for accountability. I don't blame you for your poor perspective of China, I live in the AngloBox too, and we're all a product of our surroundings.
I'm just saying there's no need for a disclaimer or asterisk when it comes to China. The Chinese people overwhelmingly and unsurprisingly support their government as they went from destitute poverty, in large part due to foreign imperialism(see Eight Nation Alliance and Five Eyes) to an absolute behemoth in every respect, seeing their living standards and incomes rise exponentially. Contrast that with the US where most people live paycheck to paycheck in a country that prints millions daily and has exploited TRILLIONS from the Global South. Where the bottom 50% haven't seen their average incomes rise, where suicides have over taken vehicle deaths. It's no wonder the West fears China as it truly is the most profound challenge to America's post WW2 hegemonic world order ever. All the Asians the West has slaughtered and deformed. The MILLIONS OF TONS OF BOMBS dropped on Asia, Agent Orange, nukes, pesticides, regime change/destabilization efforts, color revolutions..yet it's still Western media people turn to to learn about China. It's caused such sinophobia among Asian diaspora it's disheartening....oh well. Don't mean to be preachy, thank you for the video.
