As someone who liked Nevernight, your analysis is so spot on. 👌🏼

I haven’t read Nevernight, but I’ve heard very similar things about it.

I just checked my spreadsheet and it looks like I didn't DNF anything in 2020 - hurray for focusing on books that I actually (for the most part) enjoyed.

Most of my DNFs and disappointing books were from subscription boxes, and I felt obliged to read them because I had them. Maybe I should just quit subscription boxes? 😅

I think I will go into the Beautiful not thinking about vampires. Some folks that were disappointed with it, didn't think that it revived the vampire era in books. 📚🧛‍♂️
If folks have been watching videos in my TH-cam channel, then folks know that Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo gave me a painful reading experience. It is the only book that I gave less than 3/5. To be specific, I gave it 1.5/5.

I've heard so many mixed things about The Beautiful that I'm basically waiting for the series to conclude to see if it even ends on a good note or not. Like I'm curious, but also I've heard mixed things about the author's entire backlog

My worst book was Fetch by Nicole Georges. Oh my glob, I hate that book with a passion. And I DNFed Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix. I didn't hate it as much as Fetch but it wasn't scary and bored me so I felt no need to continue reading.

You should check out my gothic romance novel '40,000 Words'. It follows Adelaide Parabellum as the arrival of poems from beyond the grave causes her to recollect how she had met a stranger at a pond eight years prior. '40,000 Words' can be found by searching '40,000 Words Nicholas Leonard' on Amazon. God bless

I do love it when you know your history better than the author! Though really, anachronisms are unforgivable. And I couldn't agree more about the tendency to put modern women in historical settings. History can't be just a backdrop, it's got to mean something, and that whole super-spunky thing is very annoying. Gregory Maguire is the other name that caught my attention as I've considered reading him before but the reviews of his work are always SO mixed. So I haven't yet. On a totally different note, your necklace is gorgeous.

I genuinely don't think you would enjoy the rest of the Nevernight series. That tone continues throughout 😅
My worst read that I DNF was a contemporary titled Parachutes by Kelly Yang. It dealt with some very serious topics that I appreciated her tackling. However, that's all I liked about it. It was a Crazy Rich Asians kind of setting. Yang just tried to write way too many issues into one book, therefore none of them were well fleshed out. There wasn't enough focus. The pacing was also very awkward. Not to mention the characters were unbearable in terms of either personality or choices.
