HOW TO: Pushrod Adjustment / Lifter Direction / Pinion Runout
I thought I would bring you guys along for an average day in the life type video with me as I install & tune a 117ci Lowrider ST with an A.P.E CR485 Power Plus Kit.
I cover correct pushrod adjustments for the Screamin' Eagle Adjustable pushrods specifically along with installing the lifters to air better oil feed to them.
I show you how I 'prime' new lifters which I have been doing for over 8 years now with NO issues whatsoever. Yes I know there are vacuum tools out there that work great, but the way I do it is proven & is something you can do at home with great results.
This motorcycle also received a few other after upgrades thanks to Cycle-Rama & Alpha Performance Engines.
I touch on pinion shaft run-out as well while showing you the tool I use from Elliott Motorcycles. Get that tool & others here: elliottmotorcycles.com/product-category/tools/
I show you how I find TDCC a very easy way.
I had fun with this video while trying to make it a little different than my usual content. This is a very typical day for me at the shop minus the other Tech's being away on holidays which I why you'll notice I was talking to the camera a little more than normal. If you are just coming across this video & my channel there is LOADS of more in depth content showing Camshaft installations, piston & cylinder installs, Compensator upgrades etc & Dyno Tuning.
Be sure to check them out if you are interested.

What kind of fuel eco would you expect from this setup with a proper tune? I'm currently getting anywhere between 180-200 on average and I'm not even riding it hard. 90% of the time I'm cruising around 2100-2400 RPM.
@Prostagma2028 fuel economy shouldn't change that much on a stage 2 cam when tuned accordingly. It shouldn't be much worse than stock at all

@@MasterTechMiller have a TBR2-1 as well not sure if that plays a role but definitely have pretty bad fuel economy might need to take it to another tuner 😬
@Prostagma2028 id say so! Your full economy shouldn't be that bad
@@MasterTechMiller got any recommendations in the Adelaide area? 😁
I currently have HD's S.E. Heavy Breather that came stock on my SG ST 117, looking to go with Trasks Air filter purely on esthetics. With everything being equal, does HPi's Ram Air actually make a noticeable power gain? or is it just gimmicky?
Mr master tech Miller Quick question does the 131SE stage 4 kit. Does it come with adjustable push rods. And also. Does it come with. Heavy clutch springs or. Clutch kit. With the kit
It does NOT come with adjustable pushrods or the Screamin Eagle Heavy duty clutch springs
131 power under 114 cover. Sikcunt
What seat is that?
Crank runout tool information? Thanks

Nice breakout Mr Miller. The wheels and that clean rear end. And it loaps mean at idle. That 131 would be near my favourite tune? 150hp & 150nm ?
My 2018 Softail dump a lot of oil into the air intake until I updated the oil pump.
Nice and easy!
Sound even better with Freedom pipes
Great perspective! Great Info
I currently have a 475 cam and now looking at 131/132 upgrades. Can these be done with this cam or should I go to the 485? What’s your recommendation?
How do we contact you to discuss upgrades?
I have a question, when doing the cam on 2024 Road Glide, would it ideal to replace the oil pump and cam plate with a better after market product.
th-cam.com/video/7TxyORiPCIQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=LowCountryHarley-Davidson
Asking for your opinion: I recently purchased a 2005 Softail Deluxe with 12K miles on it. I want to change out the cam chain tensioners due to the stock ones failing. I am thinking of going with hydraulic ones, upgraded cam plate and oil pump. Also am kicking it around with going with new cams to give it some more get up and go. I don't want this bike to be for racing as this is my putt around bike but thinking that while we are in there to just do it all up. Not sure what cam I should put in it.. any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, would I need push rods etc as this bike only has 12 K on it?
A set of Screamin Eagle 204 Cams will be absolutely perfect for what you want. It will bring it to life exactly where you want it (down to low) and it will have a great sound too. Screamin Eagle offers the Cam plate, oil pump & tensioners as a kit that is designed to bolt in to the early model Twincams bringing the cam chest up to date. You will need adjustable pushrods when you do this job to save the hassle of taking off the rocker boxes & removing the rocket gear. Because the bike has only done 12k there is no need to replace or inspect anything inside the rocker boxes. Using adjustable pushrods allows you leave all that alone and get the cam chest updated with minimal engine disruption
@@MasterTechMiller Thank you for the good information, would you recommend hydraulic tensioners instead of spring-loaded ones and go that way?
@barrydawg7544 the updated Screamin Eagle cam plate kit comes with Hydraulic tensioners
Tech Miller thank you for the reply mate. After all my research I will go with your suggestion of the SE cam plate, and tensioner upgrade with the SE 204 Cams. Thank you again from the good ole USA.

Great video, buying new 2024 Road Glide tomorrow. First thing, Bassani exhaust and SE heavy breather air filter. I been running Bassani exhausts for 40 years, cant beat them.

Great videos! I have a 22 Low Rider S. Want to do a Red Shift 468. I have full 2 into 1 from SPC and stock cone breather. I’m on the fence about changing oil pump and cam plate. I see really not needed. But I do have about 21000 miles. Any thoughts? Thanks!
@@changojandro9704 have you seen my cam plate & oil pump video? Check that out if you haven't. It may answer all your questions
What dnd exhaust would you recommend most with the 483 cam for a low rider s 22 117 ?? I currently run the bobcat upsweep but just curious. Thanks tom
@AnthonyMargareci The Lowcat is my favourite for that setup. The Bobcat is a little smaller but that is about it
@ performance wise is the low cat better?
Yep

Your a desk jockey arent you? Starting bolts with a power tool is rookie level
@@robertnoakes6743 Let me break it down for you, I've spent 15 years turning wrenches as a Harley-Davidson tech and earned my stripes as a master-level technician. I know every thread pitch, torque spec, and fastener on these machines like the back of my hand. Starting bolts with a power tool isn’t just fine-it’s efficient when you have the skill and experience to do it correctly. It’s not about the tool; it’s about the hands using it. Your comment about ‘rookie level’ tells me you’ve probably never spent a day in a real workshop. You’re the type who sits behind a desk, scrolling forums, nitpicking at professionals who could build a bike blindfolded while you’re still Googling what a torque wrench does. The difference between you and me is that I get paid to do this, and my work speaks for itself. So, unless you’re prepared to step out of your little echo chamber and back your words with actual experience, I’d suggest you leave the mechanics to the experts. Stay in your lane champ
No point even explaining yourself to a peanut probably can’t even ride a motorcycle. Good on ya Tommy some people will just never grow up or understand things. Just the way it is
Love the 483 cam!!!
Hey master Miller, Great videos. I have the 2024 CVO VVT121. I added the screaming eagle wedge air cleaner and D&D 2 into 1 fat cat exhaust. Will the screaming eagle pro street tuner add a benefit? What was the AF ratio change using the SE tuner?
@DonBenedict-s8y It will be enough to get you out if trouble however there are still many limitations to it. One being the speed limiter is still on & can't be turned off. Two, there is minimal adjustment on the VE & Timing tables. There are a few more but they're are the main ones. While the AFR Table has nice rich AFR Values for the high load & rpm cells the closed loop area is huge & as mentioned above, has limited VE adjustment. The AFR table can not be adjusted at all. I can't remember exactly what the AFRs were after using the SE Pro Street Tuner but they are safe enough for just about any stage 1 combo out there
@@MasterTechMiller Great thank you. So it would be worth the peace of mind to install the SE tuner?
@DonBenedict-s8y yep
Any reason why 128 rather than 131 or bigger?
Why no 485 cam in a 131????😢
C est quoi cette doublure voix pourri ?????
Hey legend! How do you go about tuning 131ci with a cam and other mods etc do use a particular tuner?
@@bradmf01 I mainly use Technoresearch Direct Link
Torque is what moves you!
I was taught with cars to put them in with no oil in them at all, to prevent them from holding valves open at first start up. After changing valve springs "in car" on ford barra engines they can pump up also. I am referring to already used lifters though, not new replacements.
you are freaking me out driving on the left side😅😅
I put in the cycle rama 540 in my high comp 131 and she smoked some numbers and back tire.
The CR540 is tough!! The king
was it full length Bassani or one of the shorter ones ? looking at shedding some weight from my exhaust the mid length Sawicki and SPC offer good reductions but not sure how much these might effect my build CR 483 /Ape 55/60mm 6.2 shotgun injectors they do full length versions but weight loss not so great
get a good pipe and it will be lighter for torque long and short for horsepower. I run a noon stainless its pretty light over my big bore bassini.
@@roncoburn7771 realised stock/ Duals were heavy when my Khromewerks mufflers arrived and box said 25lbs add about 12 for headers an thats about same as stock Harley Exhaust
No apologies needed , great to see the things we might be considering buying for our bikes actually being installed rather than just reading about it on some message board or other . do you favour the SE pushrods over others or are they all similar in terms of ease of use quality performance longevity etc one of the last things ive got to buy after following your essentials for cam swap video
Great question! Firstly thanks for the positive feedback and support. Secondly, the adjustable pushrod quality between brands is great. The S&S Quickee option are great & I have never seen a issues with them. They are much thinner than the Screamin Eagle option but that's about it. Both have different thread pitches too buy that does not effect anything.
@@MasterTechMiller thanks for reply thats reassuring have the CR 483 plus APE Lifters to go in so want to make sure im running something to match their quality .
Total bs. My 114 with a rs468 is 119/133. A stock 117 makes higher numbers than you claim that 117 made with the rs468.
This presented to me making those numbers. I am very VERY confident that I would be able to tune the Redshift Cam up to make more power easily! The customer wanted the 483 so that's what he got. I wish I could have spent the time re-tuning it first to give a more accurate back to back comparison but it is what it is. It's not total BS, this bike rode in making those numbers. Unfortunately a crappy tune can ruin ANY Camshafts reputation very easily. This is one of those times.
@ I’m confident you would have gotten better numbers on a re tune also. I would be livid if I paid someone to install a cam in my bike and they gave it back to me making less power than when I brought it to him. I guess the video to me insinuates that the 483 is just so superior to the 468. There’s no doubt cycle rama makes some great cams but when you compare horsepower and torque in usable power ranges the 468 regularly out performs them. If you only compare total numbers that might not be the case.
RS468s are called by many to be very finicky...a SS475 is even better or a little CR470...
@@1962egl 2.5 - 3.5 K is where Most people ride so id say the torque is in the usable range certainly case for my 117 Road glide ST
@@scooternut7198 Not saying it’s not. What I am saying is when you compare the horsepower and torque numbers of a properly tuned rs468 in the usable rpm ranges that you rightly pointed out in a comparable cubic inch the 468 is more times than not going to yield higher numbers or be right there with a lot of grinds that are so often portrayed as being superior at those rpms.
Who tuned the first bike the first one with the red shift because those numbers are low I’ve seen red shift cams produced the same as a cyclerama cams
Not sure who tuned the bike or did the install. It came from New South Wales. I am very confident I could have squeezed more out of the Redshift Cam too. The CR483 is a great cam that is hard to compete with & the customer wanted it. He also has a Lowrider S with the Star Racing 30/30 Cam. He's not happy with how it's performing either & wants me to do a full Dyno tune on it so I'll be sure to post a before & after video outlining that.
@ ok looking forward to seeing it. Thanks
He should be around 121 133 SAE with 3030 im at 126 136SAE but I have few other extras 3030 cam and love it @MasterTechMiller
@@Jhood0729_jerrymesser Bryce makes great cams for sure
That’s pretty low horsepower for that motor with the redshift cam, what was wrong the tune or the cam?
The tune was definitely the biggest culprit that is for sure! That Cam does make more & I'm very confident I would've been able to tune it up easily. The customer wanted the CR483 so the customer got the CR483
Good old loaded map. Of course if the customer wants something you give it to them 👍

Hey mate any chance of any twin cam mods and upgrades? I know you work at a dealership and mainly do m8 things. just a little repetitive with parts and builds love watching your channel but a lot of content is starting to get very similar. Not trying to be negative just some more versitle content.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep it in mind. I'll see what I can do to mix things up a little more, as you are aware, Twin Cam engine builds & Cam jobs are few & far between these days but I'll do my best make a video on the next one through the doors
Good day my friend, im sure you get asked this all the time and I would understand you not commenting, i have a softail low rider 107, Im torn between two cams the zippers 468 or the CR480 I do a lot of long distance solo travel looking for longevity I am not a high rpm guy, my bike is over the 20,000 mile mark so i figured i would go in there and change out those stock lifters and being a 2019 change out the oil pump among the other basic things, cam bearing, tensioner, etc, I have already put the SE 55 intake , basic V&H slip ons with a ventilator air cleaner, any opinion would be greatly appreciated, even a different suggestion. Thank you.
Hell of a lift operator too Well done m8
Thanks mate
I did the oil can but it's never reliable enough. What I did was get a mason jar and one of those automatic vacuum jar sealers for 15$ on Amazon. Does EXACTLY what those big expensive vacuum machine does for a tiny fraction of the cost and it's tiny and has household uses too. I will always do the vacuum robot method from here on out. Cheap, perfect pump up, and ultra simple. I'm making a video on this soon.
For sure! I've got nothing against using VAC bleeders & tools to do the job, I just like to keep it simple & easy for some of the guys out there. Let me know when your video goes up, I'd love to check it out. Thanks for watching.
Redoing my comment as it seems to have vanished probably my fault. But hey ho.. Another fantastic video really great content and valuable technical and practical info. Your honest opinion of various upgrades wether cam exhaust oil pumps and the plethora of other parts is also very valuable. I for one watched your cam support plate and oil pump combo review of S&S Fueling and SE recently explaining the pinion run out tolerance was so good to hear as I went for the SE big sucker plate and pump based on your review. I got the bike back after this install yesterday and it’s running like a dream. Keep up the great work Tommy 🤟🏻
