The Zelda CD-i Games Nintendo Wishes You Forgot About
Zelda is one of the best and most popular franchises of all time. However, there are three games that Nintendo almost certainly wishes you forgot about: Wand of Gamelon, Faces of Evil and Zelda’s Adventures. These three games - published by Philips and made available on the short-lived CD-I - are awful. Just terrible.
In this video, we review these three games, talk about how they came to be, and discuss why they were just so, so bad.

The Controversy Surrounding Pinball: Car Bombings, Assassination Attempts, Gambling, and the Mob
มุมมอง 1.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
When you think of pinball, you probably think of good, clean, wholesome fun. Ahh, you naïve youth, you. Here’s the thing: Pinball has a ton of gambling origins. It started gaining popularity in America in the 1930s, and almost immediately pivoted to becoming a straight-up gambling device, not to dissimilar to slot machines. That - combined with a ton of mafia control over the devices - led to p...

It was built on revolutionary graphics chips, had record-breaking graphics, and planned a robust software library that would return Atari to the top echelon of video game designers. It didn’t work. The Jaguar failed for many reasons: A poor software library, inadequate support, odd marketing, and competition th...

Ms. Pac-Man wasn’t designed by Toru Iwatana, the creator of Pac-Man. In fact, it wasn’t designed by Namco - the owner of Pac-Man - at all. Instead, it was designed as an “enhancement kit” by a group of MIT students who figured out how to take stale video games and revive them for commercial use. Oh, and it didn’t start as Ms. Pac-Man at all. It started as Crazy Otto: Pac-Man with legs. This is ...

With market dominance and programming power at their disposal, Atari created their port for Pac-Man, the massive arcade hit. It was a disaster. Zelda 1 is really not the groundbreaker here. Ultima, wizardry, dungeons of dggorath, adventure/colossal cave all predated and layed the foundation for the design style. Zelda executed the style well but was largely iteration not revolution.
9:08 what the hell's up the top left....diarrhea
I always thought Yoshi ate things when "he" decided to (via my button press) and not being punched in the back of the head. It's funnier that way though.
As a huge open world RPG fan, I absolutely LOVED Zelda II. Its up there with the Final Fantasy series for me, its was THAT good. I spent so many hours playing that game.
I don’t think the Rob NES system came with Stack Up. The deluxe set I had came with Gyromite and Duck Hunt.
Zelda 2 is actually my favorite game of all time. It was my first Zelda game and the first game I ever beat. I don't really play video games anymore, but my daughter has a Switch, and I play this and Link to the Past every now and then. Zelda games are the only ones I'll still play.
It was my least favorite Zelda game, but still excellent. Probably because I never had an SNES as a kid, and didn't play it until I was an adult. Also 12:33, "more than 4.26 copies" isn't very much at all.
I didn't like Zelda 2. But I will never fault developers for trying to innovate and try something radically new. We need more of that. But I think the majority of gamers and publishers just want the same game but with better graphics.
Horrific to see all those machines just being smashed to pieces, old slots and pinball machines are beautiful works of art, such a shame.
Man he nailed it had this as a kid nd I got to the boss with tha horses head in red armor literally scared the piss outta me couldn’t beat em nd grew super frustrated stopped playin it after a month I did like the fact it was gold tho it was cool nd stood out in the sleeve but yea too complicated for my very casual taste why I don’t play RPGs now
So weird to see 1970s UK comedy duo Eric Morecome and Ernie Wise selling Atari 2600 Pacman at 6:00. I'm guessing that was for the UK market to get parents to buy Pacman or a console as only UK people would know who Morecombe and Wise were!!
Most early games (NES, SNES) did not have stack protection in the source code at the time they were made since it was not used then. I don't know if this would affect the ability to "rewrite" the game using a modern version of C/C++, but chances are that any ROM code that you get from an original cartridge using an emulator might not run in a modern version of C. I know that there is a website with open source code for the NES version of SMB and you can run the code in C, but I have not tried doing this and I don't know if it works. I do know that the code can be used for TAS speed runs, as this was explained in another video.
Also the game genie can't overwrite the code stored on a cartridge ROM file because the code is read-only, so all it can do is "hijack" the messages that are sent from the console before they are received by the cartridge ROM. But this means that the Game Genie input codes have to be able to create changes to the game in spite of the read-only limitations on the cartridges. I know computers were not mainstream in the days when most of these games were used, but a lot of this seems like it could be accomplished simply by copying the source code or getting access to a "writeable" version of it in some other way on a computer so that you could manually make the changes that you want and then run the game in its original programming language (probably C or C++). That really would be SO much easier.
Had a friend who had more -money- credit card debt than sense. He made it a point to buy every new console upon release. So I got to play the Jaguar and it was horrible. Only thing worse than the games was the controller. Felt like a small book in your hands. Releasing a console in that day with only 3 main buttons was puzzling; especially after the SNES and the revised Sega Genesis controller.
Wait Sony and Philips made the cdi? Sony-top end electronic component systems Philips-light bulbs WTF Hey anyone interested in overtime? We need voiceover people. Sign these form stating your aware your photo and voice and ugly costumes will Appear in game. No royalties, just regular overtime pay. Don't worry you'll make more that way....ahhhhhh hahaha
It's the worst Zelda game ever made. So why the heck would I click like.....that would mean I like the game, no way forget it. Now if you said click like if you enjoyed my editing and voiceover then I'd gladly do it, but I can't not cuz u made it very clear what to click like for....so I clicked like cuz I do love this game I just wanna smack the dev team miyamito included.....oh im making so much money with this nintendo thing forget Zelda im making commando instead. I'm gonna retire at 25....woohoo awe damn
There was a rare 3D glasses system for PC back around 1993. You got a PC expansion card, a 6ft cable and the glasses. There were about 6 games for the system in total and it was usable but very hard to get comfortable and only worked well with the old CRT monitors and you'd need a large monitor of at least 18" which was large for a CRT at the time. Some guy gave it to me in 1994 as he didn't want it and I sold my fully boxed glasses and the 5 games I had around 10 years ago for around $300, not a bad profit.
Back in the mid to late 1980s we had Romantic Robot Multiface II cartridge for the Amstrad CPC. Multiface II cart could pause running games, poke about in the innards of a running game, search for lives, points, cash, etc and even dump the entire game from memory to storage as a saved checkpoint at any moment, the saves needed to have the MF2 inserted so you couldn't use it to pirate for non MF2! The best part was that I was learning Z80 assembler at the time and the cart allowed me see exacty how games worked in assembly language as they were running.
Finding the whole Star Wars movie done in ACSII chars hidden in Microsoft's terminal app on Windows is one of the my favourite easter eggs. It used to be really easy to run but takes a little more work these days but you can still get it.
The game was really fun. Difficulty spike from the first most def. Those stupid red axe guys!!! I can still beat this game with my eyes closed minus the last dungeon. I need a map still haha.
My wife and I have both been gamers since we were kids, we both started playing ganes back in th early 1980s and have played games since. People think it's weird that as a married couple we still play "childish video games", but I have a very paid tech career, no debts, no mortgage and I'm looking towards early retirement, we're very adult responsible people. Our kids are grown up and so as empty nesters we have even more time to play games than ever before now. It allows us to co-op and collaborate on games and ensures we enjoy working together as a couple, we love co-op builder games but also run'n'guns, we're huge fans of FarCry5 and we both have around 300+ hours on FC5 with about 290 each in co-op alone! The most important aspect though is escapism for my wife. My wife was fit and healthy until around 2019 when she found that years of working with nursery age kids, specially being on her knees and bending down all the time to be with kids, had caused serious damage to her knees, she's now got crippling arthiritis, barely walk unaided and can no longer work and she's only 50 years old. It's games that keep my wife going, she loves playing games where the person in the game doesn't suffer immense pain or is crippled, she gets to be a hero with agility and strength unlike the "broken body I've been cursed with now". She has serveral other hobbies like knitting and running my sideline photo licensing biz, but her days of coming out on long walks are now behind her. I now have to go o nature walks on my own and it kils me inside that I'm alone on those, so gaming is where I give back to her when we co-op, sometimes I'll play after a hard day at work just so she has someone to play games with even when I'm not in the mood. She gets to escape into games especially co-op with me, this has improved her mental health and she;s more accepting that being crippled is now her life, games are a way to escape for just a couple of horus a day and take her mind off the pain and what she's had to lose out on.
I remember getting Zelda 2 for Christmas when I was little and was SO excited, with the gold cartridge and everything, it was also impossible to get. But the game only worked a few times before the cartridge totally stopped functioning. I was so devastated and dreamt of it for weeks. It would take several months for my folks to secure another copy of it for me. Hands down this was one of the most iconic games of my whole life. Thanks so much for covering this. I loved that you mentioned Dragon Warrior also!!!
I loved IK+ as a teen, I had it on the Amstrad CPC micro and to this day it's still one of my my favrourite retro beat 'em ups, I even have it on my SteamDeck! Ha ha!
I bought a GameGear and bought my girlfriend a Gameboy when we were on vacation many years ago. I should have bought shares in Duracell, man did the Gear eat batteries. I think the first set got chewed out inside 90 minutes! Within a monthbI was so pissed off with it, I just went out and bought a Gameboy so at least me and gf could then share games. I used my GB for about 7 years before I put it away, eventually during a clear out around 2010 I was able to sell my GB on ebay still fully working!! ( My gf later became my wife and I've had her for 30+ years now but eBay won't take her! ha ha!! ) Sega was the Betamax to Nintendo's VHS, Sega had the superior tech but Nintendo knew their market and deliberately played their strengths and played down the tech. I bought Gameboy Color when it came out and later the GBA as well which was one of Nintendo's small number of failures. The best was the GB Color, that was an amazing little system, I had about 150 games for that by the time I sold it.
I would take my cartridge to my Granddad's house, and he would level my character for me while I was in school during the week. Then on weekends I'd sometime stay there and we would play Zelda 2 taking turns all weekend. Core memory.
I was a fan of the arcade of altered beast so i was excited for the Genesis port. Even though it fails in comparison, i still love it back then as it was near impossible to get good arcade ports. But i can see why it didnt work, i was unique and not a large market share target
I was confused by how different it was when I first got it. It really few on me though. I love it now
The big difference between Zelda 1 and 2 is the effect of an optimal playthrough. An optimal playthrough of Zelda 1 doesn't make the game easier so much as it just makes it quicker. Zelda 2 is a lot easier if you go through all the dungeons to find the items first without defeating the bosses, learn all the spells and techniques, the go back and defeat the bosses to clear the palaces, getting a free level after each one. You then pick up all the one ups before going to the final temple. The game is still hard without save states but its much easier and less grindy
Anyone remember Turbo Graphics? I was the only person i knew that had it. I had a few games one being Splatter House. I don't remember the other games.
What a bunch of cheaters that don't know how to play fair! Thanks to people like this I stopped playing "Call of Duty" from all them f**king cheaters!!!!!! 😡
And Echoes of Wisdom claims it's the first time you can play as Zelda herself. Pfft. 😂
Sequels now (MW 2 - 228) are just reskins. That's not a sequel. That's a "map pack". 80's and 90's sequels did the right thing, taking chances and making "new games."
After playing it again as a 49 year old, with the help of walk through guides, maps, plus the Switch's ability to go back in time a few seconds to fix your mistakes, I don't know how I finished the game as a kid on a regular NES. Especially avoiding turning into an eggplant. Still love the game and is one of my favorites.
As an 11 year old I found the game too hard and too different to enjoy. With different eyes now it’s a good change and comes off better than some sequels (I’m looking at you FF2)
Announcing zelda 2, a game that sold over 4 million copies, a failure is insane. This mentality is the definition of greed. This is exactly what lead players having to pay micro transactions into todays games.
I am that person. Zelda 2 was the best one.
24d-d4b. Turbo mode for the Game Boy version of Killer Instinct
can't remember the other 3 digits of the code, however
Zelda 2 was the 1st game in which I grinded xp.
I love Zelda 2, I prefer it over Zelda 1.
I mostly loved this game, but the holes in the floor of the hidden palace got me every time.
My God I loved that game!
I had a jaguar in the 90s… best game was alien vs predetors
Best game ever
We never bought any guide we just typed random codes in and often had awesome results!
The Legend of Zelda was endlessly playable. Zelda II was popular on release and hyped to the moon at first, but few of my friends and I bothered with it after the initial excitement wore off. It just wasn’t very fun.
C'mon, we ALL know why it sucked ass and failed, IT WAS THE CONTROLLER! 😂
I loved Zelda II, Castlevania II, and Super Mario Bros. 2
