10 Underrated RETRO HORROR Movies to Check Out!
Hot take, I don't think Dog Soldiers is a good movie. I was honestly bored to death
As a huge fan of bram stokers book and Francis ford Coppola movie and a fan of the original Nosferatu . I loved every minute of this movie 🙌
Don’t wast your money on this movie! I wasn’t impressed once, I actually almost fell asleep😊
Zombies are my favorite sub genre
Love that this is spoiler free - thank you, can't wait to see it!!
Taking my son to see it this weekend. Cant wait.
I loved it too. I wasn't as jazzed about Orlok's look as you were, but it was fine and will grow on me. Love the channel.
Both Dr phibes?
I'd call this folk horror, brother. I saw it Christmas day. Loved it. Especially the folklore that doesn't often feature in vampire movies. The corpse as a leach snd a lover, for example.
I'm right there with you on preferring the gothic vampire to other depictions in film. I can't wait to see this and see how it compares to the Murnau and Herzog versions. My hope is that it stands right alongside both of them, and your review makes think it does!
I'm looking forward to the sequel Nosfera2: This Time It's Personal... In all seriousness, I loved this flick. One of my favorite things was how it took it's time and allowed the visuals to speak for themselves. Robert Egger is quickly becoming one of my favorite modern directors. Awesome review!
MaDSA: Make Dracula Scary Again
seeing it this weekend, soooooo stoked for it!
This movie sucks , non scary, overrated, bad dialogue too
Hush reminds me of Wait Until Dark
The scariest thing about perfect strangers is that kid is now in his 40s
I also love lestat and anne Rice's vamps, but they are humanoid vampires. Looking forward to a scary vamps. Also Skarsgaurd is our generation's Lon Chaney
Have you seen Bill Skarsgard in Castle Rock? He was creepy without any makeup so no surprise he can pull this off. Liked that this review didn’t have spoilers.
Anyone else notice the stylistic similarities to Cainhurst Castle in the video game Bloodborne and Orlok's castle? As well as the carriage approach scene. Oh, and the movie was amazing.
Watched it tonight, well acted, effects were good. The sound and music kept throwing me out of the mood, and whoever kept putting grease on the lens or defocusing things didn't help either. The fact that in the original they were forced to change things in the film to try and get by copyright and then still got the film nearly completely destroyed after a court ruling made me very disappointed just how much they decided just to make another version of Dracula and file the serial numbers off. Only thing they changed mainly was they took out all the suspense and dread, and added in a vampire with a greasy pornstache and slow pacing. I'm disappointed with the quality of the director's other films that I've enjoyed i expected better.
I'm SO excited for this film. I'm a huge Willem Dafoe fan...have lots of his movies, and autographs. He was in another film; "Shadow of The Vampire" where Willem plays Nosferatu... along with John Malkovich as the director. I have the poster signed by them both. I, too, am a Johnny Depp fan, so when his daughter, Lily Rose, started into films, I purchased them in hopes to somehow help her career. I know she will be great in this. She isn't afraid to go out of her comfort zone. I'm sure she's seen enough on how to get things done. This movie will be a great add to my collection. I just love Willem's range of parts that he's played over the years.
My favorite film of the year.
I really enjoyed the film and was glad that I was able to enjoy a midnight showing on Christmas. What a fantastic memory. Couple Questions: / Thoughts SPOILERS 1. When the Gypsies killed a vampire on the same night he arrived I felt like this was an everyday occurrence to slay vampires, though Orlok did not create vampires as he only represented death (endless appetite) to victims. Did anyone else feel like the vampire / gypsy story should have taken more time to explain to the audience? 2. I felt like Eggers directed the first act cinematography like a fever dream of style and let up midway through the film. I wish he would have kept that pacing and style throughout. 3. I felt like Fredricks end was abrupt and wasn’t explained as well as it could have. Why did he expire so quickly without warning? Did I miss something? He went from healthy to drooling blood pretty quickly. I just felt his end was rushed. Those are my nitpicks. Other than that I really enjoyed it and will look forward to bluray so I can enjoy it for years to come. PS: The Lighthouse is amazing and definitely worth the rewatch. Some of the best cinematography in recent history as well as two of the best performances in cinema history. It’s crazy, but hauntingly beautiful.
The first 30-40 minutes were great. The rest is a snooze. Great atmosphere, and a decent ending, but slow as molasses. If you're into very slow paced atmospheric stuff, this is the movie for you. It wasn't scary. But what is?
Dracula is cool of course but Cthulhu would kick his scrawny pale ass.
My list would include Dead and Buried for sure.
Jim Carrey‘s Dr. Robotnik… that’s all I’m saying.
I can't wait to see this. I'm so done with vampires being "cool" or "sexy." Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that. But I'm the same as you. I want absolute, disgusting, demonic evil. Unfortunately, having a 7-month old baby in the house is not conducive to going to the movies. I may have to wait until it hits streaming.
''Dracula'' is a creature of spiritual and physical evil. Only by means of true spiritual purity and physical courage can he be defeated. Any narrative which attempts to tell the tale of ''Dracula'', in any other context, weakens and degrades the moral of the story.
Just got out of the theater. Wow! Actually worthy among the other two flicks. 10/10 fricheks
The detail in Nosferatu was off the charts. Saw it with my Romanian friend and she said that the costumes and the way the village was portrayed was pretty accurate.
Thank you for mentioning the Herzog version! So many others are not mentioning it and it’s just as important as the silent version.
I. love the Herzog version, It's a masterpiece.
@@fringelilyfringelily391 Almost every shot in Herzog's remake is like a renaissance painting
What is everybody’s problem with this
This film was amazing! It’s a must have for me.
Strangely, no fangs are seen in the entire movie. 😟
SPOILERS I don’t understand being down on Fredrick Harding. He was trying to be a friend and let her stay at their place for a few weeks, then she starts screaming and convulsing all night. Now he has to call (and probably pay) the doctor repeatedly. Then his wife and children are in danger. Then there’s a plague. Then his wife gets sick and puts his daughters in more danger. Then they all die and his life is in shambles. I completely get him saying “Forget this, I’m done with your nonsense. I don’t care. Leave and never come back” but he tries to maintain courtesy and friendship while his life is falling apart. I feel for this man
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way too.
nice T-shirt!
Actually Orlok’s look was one of my favorite aesthetic aspects of the movie. Knowing Bram Stoker based his character on Prince Vlad of Wallchia, just one look at Vlad’s famous portrait and the connection is instant and made perfect sense.
I was thinking that same thing. Just look at the illustrations of Vlad Tepes. JAMES
Yea I loved also ! He captured an essence of bram stokers dracula the black and white Nosferatu and even prince vlad himself . I heard people complaining about his look , but many of these people don’t know that Nosferatu was basically a film attempt at dracula onscreen and they didn’t have the rights . Also many don’t know that dracula was based off the real life vlad tepes ( vlad the impaler ) and he captured that look as well . I thought he was a perfect capture of all 3 if they were put together as one character ! 💯
Orlock voice was perfection ❣️💯
Something no one seems to have brought up is that Eggars brought in some Romanian mythology with making Orlock a Solomani. In Romanian folklore the Solomani are wizards who train with the Devil to learn magic at a school called Scholomance.
It appeared in one book, that was discredited long ago, from which Stoker got inspiration writing the book. The entire dragon in the mountain, who teaches men magic, is thought to be nonsense made up to sell books. There’s an entire different version of it, that has ties to Jewish mythology. It’s just crap that people put together, after speaking with a few different people, in a few regions. _Scholomance_ isn’t even a Romanian word. It’s a German mistranslation made by the woman, who wrote the folk tale book, that Stoker took from.
I have been waiting for this to come out for so long. I'm going this weekend. Robert Eggers is brilliant, and I love anything he does. VVitch was an amazing first film, and those little kids scared me more than Black Phillip, and the witch combined.😂 The original 1922 Nosferatu is one of my favorite movies, and I can't wait to see what Robert does with his version.
I thought the acting and cinematography were incredible. Tbh I hated the mustache, his voice, and the pacing. I wasn’t expecting something as epic as The Northman, but man this movie was slow.
Best werewolf movie is ( wolf moon ) , excellent cast , great story
One thing I loved about this movie is that Holt IS terrified the entire time he’s in the castle. Keanu was kinda dopey in Coppola’s Dracula flick, just kinda waving off the supernatural happenings. Here, though, Holt looks like he’s about to bolt out the door any second and he does NOT want to be there. As far as the character design for Orlock, no spoilers, but he DOES look straight up like an old ass, decrepit, Eastern European Count.
When he asked to leave, I’d never seen a man more desperate 😅
“I was paralyzed with fe-ah”
Completely wrong about Keanu.
The only thing I didn't like in this film, was the mustache. The rest, was amazing
