I loved this movie more than I love certain family members. Many people found it hard to watch, but I absolutely relished it! It is Cronenbergian body horror at is best. However, the point of this film is what kept me thinking and talking about it for weeks afterwards. It is about the violence women do to themselves in the name of beauty. It's about how men are dictating what these beauty standards are and how they are not held to the same ludicrous standards. I felt the hardest scene to watch wasn't a gory one, but one where Demi's character is getting ready to go on a date and can't get past the hatred of her own reflection while she re-does her look over and over again, never reaching that high bar she strives for. The real tragedy is that the guy who has waiting for her is the only truly nice guy in the whole film who has always seen her true beauty. So tragically relatable for so many of us. Truly courageous work by Demi Moore. RESPECT!
Sitting in the theatre thinking "Woah, it can't get crazier than this", then the film goes to the next level, then the next level, and so on. I had so many feelings about this as an aging woman. It's not my favourite horror film of the year, but it's definitely in my top 5.
Speaking of feeling like watching a director, David Fincher and David Lynch are like that for me. I can spot their films in an instant! I love it, it makes the experience that much more intense!!
it's one of those films i'm just happy to have witnessed in my lifetime. it goes from stylistically interesting to pretty great and to perfectly my jam in the last 15 minutes
It’s great to have a movie actually about something like the 80s. Films like Society and They Live actually had a political point as does this masterpiece. Malignant was the usual tame modern horror for teens
Dennis Quaid is one of the best actors who has ever lived, and it amazes me that he is in a body horror movie! For that reason alone, I will blind buy this movie!

I felt like I had a concussion by the time the film was over. I am glad that I saw it in the cinema. It was one and done for me, but I have thought about it and reflected about it quite a bit.
I saw this remarkable film yesterday. It's extraordinary. It's worthy of superlatives, it's that good. I could write realms about The Substance, but I'll keep it short. It's actually 2 films in one, the first two thirds being an intense psychological horror and last third being utterly gory. I much preferred the 'first film'; it winds up the tension to the nth degree to the extent that it's almost unbearable (akin to the final section of Requiem For A Dream) . I'll award the 'first film' 11/10. Demi Moore deffo deserves an Oscar for her performance therein. The concluding third also reminds me of Society or another of the Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon productions. A final word about the editing and style of cinematography; it's in the style of Gaspar Noe and reminded me most of Spun. In other words, brill. This is a must see film.
I really love how Demi had the bravery to do this film; satirizing her past career and also being completely naked. I also really love how it turns into a Gwar concert. This has been a great year for Horror. The Substance, Alien Romulus, Oddity, and In a Violent Nature: I give each of them a rating of 8/10.

It’s nice to hear a different perspective on this film. Well a male perspective that isn’t hostile or belittling of the film. Ray Liotta was hired for the part but unfortunately he passed away & that’s how they got Dennis Quaid. He’s basically doing an impersonation of Liotta, just think of the laugh you’ll see it. This movie pairs well with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Sunset Boulevard & Fried Green Tomatoes. The first 2 deal with actresses who have been used up & tossed aside by Hollywood similar to The Substance. Fried Green Tomatoes brings in the aspect of a woman getting older & being disrespected by younger people like in The Substance. The neighbor in Substance is hostile to Demi but a pushover to Margret & out in public young people are impatient & disrespectful to old Demi but nicer to young Sue/Margaret very much like in FGT. How women are treated changes throughout their lives all because they have the audacity to get older or gain weight etc. It was subtle but important to include in the movie. Also this movie is almost like a silent film. There isn’t a lot of dialogue especially in the beginning. There are men like Quaid’s character irl, you’re a man, you’ve maybe never met them but they exist & they most definitely exist in Hollywood & upper management in corporations. You know, they’re the ones who think they can grab women by the 🐈 & it’s ok because they’re rich/powerful. who’s gonna tell them no? It’s easy to get hung up on the body horror (which doesn’t necessarily need to be scary) but the story of how women are treated, how older women are treated, how young sexy beautiful women are treated is really what drives this movie. The camera obsessively looks & salivates over young Sue/Margaret in the way lascivious men look & salivate over a young (hot) girl. The camera is a character in the movie. The fast camera work, where the camera focuses, how it follows the characters is integral to the film. The prosthetic work in this movie is top tier. Those aren’t Margaret’s boobs. Yeah, go back & watch the movie again, insane right? *ALL* of the prosthetic work on this film was insanely good. The sound design, the cinematography, the music, the costumes, makeup, prosthetics, even the font - amazing. For me it comes down to the story & for me as a woman this movie was top tier. The director did a short film years ago with a similar concept but it wasn’t a woman it was a man. The man used a program that made him appear more fit & handsome but it was funny. That nefarious element isn’t there when a man just wants to be tall, fit & handsome in the way it exists when a woman wants to be younger. I saw the UK premier at Frightfest with director present and an audience that absolutely went wild with it. I re-watched with my wife and enjoyed it nearly as much. At that showing I could tell some of the audience were appalled even though the reviews had been quite clear about its content. Watch her 1st film, Rampage as well. Its really good
i loved this movie! i saw so many reminders of my job. i work in a doctor’s office and we provide hormone replacement therapy and i swear it’s like the substance. these patients come in dragging, completely depleted of estrogen and/or testosterone, we do the procedure and see them again 2 weeks later and they’re like all new people. full of energy and well rested. they are now Sues lol
Happy to see it also reminded you of Malignant, because I had that exact thought, especially when *spoiler* the older self and younger self got into that fight. My favorite horror movie of the year, and I agree I don't really need to see it again anytime soon. I'm glad I got to experience it in a theater. Demi should be getting awards for her perfect performance here.
It was interesting hearing your perspective as a man about this movie. Most women I know who’ve seen this felt the same as your friends wife, including myself. It felt like a very clear metaphor for being a woman in society, not just in the film industry. Even the fact that a woman directed the most disgusting, intense movie of the year is a statement. I also love Revenge, and there’s a lot of similar themes when it comes to womanhood. These movies are rich with metaphor and political statements, and it’s very empowering as a woman to have these intense, violent, sickening movies show the mental and physical toll it takes to be a woman in a historically misogynist society, whether you fit the mold or not.

x Speaking of Demi Moore...Moore is my paternal grandmother's family name. o In an alternate history where my father's parents would not have been married, my name could have been Benjamin Moore (which is a paint company). o In the movie Indecent Proposal, Demi Moore's character is Diana Murphy...Murphy is the family name of my paternal grandmother's mother! x Watched The Stepford Wives, great movie! o That is very much a movie for sociologists (I received my bachelor's and master's degree in sociology)! o There is a lot of suspense generated as it almost seems like, at times, she is truly crazy and imagining things but it is always uncertain! o Catherine Ross's performance as Joanna is fantastic as it really just seems like she is psychologically pinned in a corner the entire time and it is only a matter of time until something happens to her! o The idea of a robot Doppelgänger replacing the real wives is one that certainly is going to be picked up again soon, it's such a thought-provoking and mindbending idea! o The ending where "Joanna" is staring into the camera during the close-up is pure legendary filmaking! † That is my favorite movie close-up of all time! x Speaking of Reagan, before I went to it at the hometown theater I thought "There is absolutely no way that they do not have jelly beans in the movie" (Weird History has covered Reagan's Jelly Bean love A LOT). o I was so sure that I went to Dollar General and bought a bag of jelly beans to give to my godfather Randy Gross (whose family owns the movie theater) before I saw the movie! † Jelly Beans are all over the movie! (Great movie too!). x I will try to think of the best time to see The Substance!
I think the substance is scary, but not in your face scary, more like subtle scary. Getting older, losing relevancy in the environment where you are in, not doing the proper job of detaching your self-worth from your youth and looks, grappling with the consequences of it, like experiencing self-hatred. The expectation of society has of you, is that once you reach a certain age, you should go into a corner and die, because you are deemed useless. For me, the scariest part was the first makeup scene and the fact Elizabeth went back to what she knew instead of starting something else, all because of how much she has been programmed to find worth in youth and looks.
Yes indeed.. It's a very unique film. Women getting fed up of being "Beauty Queens ".. But the film left me.. Exhausted!!. The last half hour was definitely too much for my body and mind.. Anyway, it's one unforgettable experience which I don't really fancy going through it again... 🎯

I am looking forward to finally watching this movie when it comes out physically. I hear all the criticisms, and they all sound completely understandable. I'm not going to go in expecting the greatest movie ever made. But the fact that everyone says how unique it is makes me want to watch it and support it. And I've loved Demi Moore since probably About Last Night, so I got to get this.

this movie should have been about 90 minutes long. there could have been so much complexity between her and her clone but it was all surface level. None of the characters felt real or likeable.
So...Im not the biggest fan of body horror movies overall and Ive been kinda avoiding this one because it looked like a film school kid making a gross over-cooked music video....and...nothing you said made me feel like my first impressions were incorrect 😂😂😂😂...Im on the fence about even watching

Even though I've seen a lot of the video nasties from back in the day... Another film I will not watch is A Serbian Film- even though an 'edited version' is on Fawsome horror
I was disappointed. Yes, it's over the top, it has some awesome practical effects, the cast is very good, and so on. But my main problem (like you already adressed in the beginning): It is NOT scary! Compare it to one of the most iconic body horror movies of all times The Fly (I liked the homage in the climax), and you see what I mean. That one was dark and greedy, and you were very afraid of Brundlefly. The Substance is way too bright and stylish, it almost felt more like an 2 hour music video, like a weird fd up version from Call on me with Vince McMahon in it 😉. S...t, I think even Slither is scarier than this one 😅 So, not a bad movie overall, but I guess I just expected something different, and maybe it wasn't "made for me" neither.
I loved the movie and it was awesome to see Demi and Dennis Quaid. Thought the over the top- ness of it all made it perfect. My only drawback- and maybe an unpopular opinion- I wish someone else would have been cast for Sue. Just don't think MQ is that physically pretty or dynamic. 🤷

The Substance is way too bright and stylish, it almost felt more like an 2 hour music video, like a weird fd up version from Call on me with Vince McMahon in it 😉. S...t, I think even Slither is scarier than this one 😅

If you like long boring movies I guess you would like it. I don't know how this garbage is considered a horror movie. Worst movie I seen in 2024.
I loved the movie and it was awesome to see Demi and Dennis Quaid. Thought the over the top- ness of it all made it perfect. My only drawback- and maybe an unpopular opinion- I wish someone else would have been cast for Sue. Just don't think MQ is that physically pretty or dynamic. 🤷

@@mrtn1478That’s kind of the point though. It was highlighting how the female experience is so often affected by the male ideas and attitudes. I’m not sure if being truthful is being feminist but I did feel it was a movie “for women”, as one myself.
Too explicit, almost pornographic for me. And it wasn’t too subtle, nor profound, at least not to me. I don’t like body horror, maybe that’s the reason, not my cup of tea.
