I watch the first Hammer Dracula movie every Halloween day, but this is also a great choice, being the other most atmospheric and the sequel with by far the best characters!
I saw the film at the theatre and the audience cheered when Dracula dies. I have not seen that with the audience before or since. It is nice to see the audience cheer when evil is destroyed by good.
The opening shock of the girl in the church bell is really effectively done. The falling shoe makes you jump and before you’ve recovered from that the body appears. It gets the film off to a good nerve-jangling start. Though I do wonder by what logic Dracula was able to enter such a holy place to begin with to kill the girl!
I think this was perhaps Christopher Lee's most physical portrayal of Dracula. I some of the other movies he's very static and only has a scene or two where he easily overpowers either one of his vampire brides or some would be hero. Here though Lee definitely needed to eat his Wheaties since he's crashing through windows and jumping around rooftops like a drunk Santa Claus.
Ya, there is a pretty heavy religious overtone to THESE flicks. Van Helsing also says that vampirism is a "disease" that's "part spiritual and part physical" in one of the flicks in the series (I believe its the second). Barry Andrews is also in Blood On Satan's Claw (another British horror flick and early Devil flick too).
Great review of a great Dracula movie, I enjoyed that. I personally think that Dracula's best line in the franchise was from Dracula AD 1972 when he said to Van Helsing "You would play your brains against mine, against me who has commanded nations?
My dad took my brothers and me to a drive in to see this movie because it was rated "G." I was five, and it was unforgettable. This is the first film in history to be awarded a "G" by the then newly created ratings board.
Hey Daniel. My wife and I have just recently discovered your channel. We've binge watched a ton of episodes so far. Thank you so much for the wonderful content. Keep up the great work!
I saw this movie in the year of its release at a big cinema (now a live theatre venue) that stands close beside Victoria Station in London and I can verify on that occasion that there was a very long queue to get in that stretched far down the road beforehand.
Im only 37 but this is the most Dracula film i grew up with as a lil kid in the 90's so i feel special!!!! There will never be a better Dracula death in any film that will ever beat this one💯❤️
0:20 the joys of distribution, here in the UK the figure isn't getting a wide release until January. Also recently rewatched these films with my dad who usually only watched the first two films, getting to this one we both agreed it was the best sequel of the bunch.
Hey Daniel! You are spot on about this being the greatest Dracula sequel in the whole Hammer franchise. This film has always been one of my faves since I was a kid. I remember staying up late on a saturday night as a small kid to watch The Horror Double Bill on BBC - they used to show both a Dracula and a Frankenstein movie :)
I remember those double-bills on a Saturday night. Before the days of home video it was literally the only way you could see those films. They would start with an RKO in black/white followed by a Hammer in colour. Happy times. There was also Appointment With Fear on ATV a few years before on Friday nights. It was a real treat if your parents would allow you to stay up to watch them. It made me a Hammer fan for life!
You got me with the priest and the training montage part 😂. I don't know if this is my favorite sequel, but it is up there on my list for sure. I loved all the characters and this too is my favorite Michael Ripper role. Veronica Carlson is the quintessential 'Hammer Glamour' girl and Christopher Lee is always great. I absolutely love this review and now I have to rewatch this flick 🧛
If I recall correctly, the reasin why Christopher Lee was given so few lines of dialogue and screen time is that Hammer paid his salary based upon those things. So the less he appeared/said, the less they had to pay him.
brilliant movie and you did it justice Daniel, now I want to watch it again! I hope someday we'll have all these hammer movies in 4k, hopefully done by second sight or arrow or vinager syndrome, imagine a giant 4k set of all the dracula movies
The first time I saw DHRFTG was when I was about 10. Me and my sister were so frightened of Lee's Dracula that we literally cheered when he got impaled on the cross. What a fantastic ending. Second only to when Van Helsing kills him in the first film.
I look forward to your videos and i am a big Hammer Horror fan . Love the scene where Paul and the priest are introduced to each other. Actually, there are many great scenes in the movie and you get Michael Ripper as the amiable innkeeper.
My understanding is that Lee refused to say a lot of the dialogue he was given as Dracula because he felt it was lousy. He didn’t mind if it came directly from the novel. He was quite a character, and one of my favorite actors. It’s a shame he never got to play Gandalf, but he was perfect for the part of Saruman in LOTR. Still, I would have loved to hear him exclaim “Fool of a Took!” to Pippin. He probably would have scared the poor little hobbit to death.
It has always bothered me, why didn't Dracula just get the priest to remove the cross from the castle door, would have saved himself a whole lot of trouble.
One of the best scenes comes before Zena's death where she yells at him in defiance and he kind of smiles and then it shows a closeup of his eyes and then they flare up and it shows her screaming.
Dracula being impaled on a giant cross is kind of ironic, considering how often Dracula is linked to historical Vlad the Impaler. And I could be wrong but I think the body that Dracula and the Priest toss aside when they steal her coffin is the same girl who was found dead in the church bell.
Funny to see this review...I was talking with some horror fan friends, all of whom recommended this one and "Dracula Prince of Darkness" and I vowed to pick both up on disc...then, the other night while going through the horror section in my collection I found that I actually got both several years ago and they are sitting there sealed, ready to watch! Ever do that? Collector issues... :)
This is definitely one of my favorite Hammer films! The characters, the colors, the imagery, the cinematography! Have you ever done a review of "Taste The Blood of Dracula"? I think it is considered to be one of the weaker Hammer Dracula films, but I really think it is an underrated gem!
Very happy to say i completely agree with you. Last year I did an almost complete watch off all films for the first time and this was definitely my favorite after Horror of Dracula. You put it in words perfectly , just something about this film which screamed that it was on a whole other level. Having Lee speak does so much. Actually wanna rewatch it rn
As to Dracula not dying by merely being staked, I like to think it's because he's been resurrected a time or two, and each time grows stronger and is therefore harder to destroy. It may also be, because he drank the blood of a priest and has enslaved the priest, that it may make him more powerful. It's a shame the theory doesn't hold up for the rest of the series, though
I agree strongly that this is the best Dracula sequel of the Hammer series. I think the film benefits from the time period it was made in 1968. It still had the traditional gothic setting of the early Hammer films, but was made late enough that it was beginning to push the envelope slightly in terms of blood and sensuality without being exploitive.
This movie is an absolute Monsterpiece! It's darn near a perfect film. It's only detraction would be the means by which Dracula comes back to life. It's my second favorite Hammer Dracula film just behind Horror Of Dracula. The characters are perhaps the greatest in any Hammer movie. I also think that Veronica Carlson is the most beautiful of all of the Hammer actresses. If you enjoy Gothic Horror this is a must watch.
This was the first horror movie I saw in theaters! A nostalgic favorite, I was 8 years old. Scared me and thrilled me all at once. We lived on base housing in Germany and my brother, a few friends and I went to the matinee. On the way walking home, the sun was setting and it was dark and cold on the path behind the tall apartment housing units. Of course my brother and his friends had to jump out from the corner of a housing unit scaring us girls to death. That movie was the beginning of my love for Dracula and Christopher Lee. I even named my first son Christopher Lee. I watch this movie at least once a year since being able to own my own copy, whenever it came on late night tv when I was younger.
I couldn't agree more with your love for this film. It's my favourite Hammer movie. It's my second favourite vampire film after From Dusk Till Dawn (which i only first saw a few months ago) i have loved Risen From The Grave since 1987 when i was 7. It is of course in my top 100 movie list, currently at 51st, which might not sound that high, but a lot of films have been made since 1968.
You should check out the From Dusk Til Dawn SERIES, produced by Robert Rodriguez. It totally expands the lore and the Gecko brothers criminal backstory and ESPECIALLY give Santanico much much more to do! 1000% better than the movie...and I LOVED the movie. Blade the series was pretty damn great too. Both are CRIMINALLY underseen and underappreciated
My Top 3 Favorite Hammer Draculas, bar none: 1. Dracula Has Risen From The Grave 2. Brides Of Dracula 3. Scars Of Dracula I watched them repeatedly when I owned them on VHS and wore out the tapes! Getting them on DVD has been a problem because they would be bundled with "Dracula Ain't it Dumb" or "Taste The Blood of Boredom"!
I agree with you on the first two but I thought the small budget really showed on Scars. It's probably my least favourite. My top 3 would be: 1. Dracula (Horror Of Dracula) 2. Brides Of Dracula 3. Dracula Has Risen from The Grave
Well, the bats looked better than in earlier movies but they still looked cheesy. What I liked was the story where the lead couple were like "Fred and Daphne" trying to find out about what happened to his brother. Patrick Traughtman as Drac's latest minion was a hoot; James Bernard wrote a Top notch score and I thought this was one of Christopher Lee's best performances as the Sanguinary Count-- invincible until Mother Nature showed him who's really in control! I like it slightly more than Horror of Dracula because what my favorites have in common are the vampire leads acting like charming scoundrels. A Dracula who just snarls and hisses doesn't hold my interest.
"Dracula Has Risen from the Grave" was my first horror movie seen at a drive in. I remember covering my eyes, watching from the back seat as my parents watched from the front. My second movie was another Hammer classic: "The Lost Continent" (1968). If you've never seen it, you definately should. Not your usual Hammer flick. I highly recommend it.
Daniel, I remember when this ran on " The CBS Friday Night Movie " in 1972. It was edited so much that my friends and I would make the joke: " Hey, did you see scenes from Dracula has Risen from the grave on CBS last night". Very heavily edited. I finally saw uncut on WTBS years later. I did see the American version of " Taste the blood of Dracula " on the big screen when it was released by Warner Brothers in the states. Analog print on the big screen, had a darker look, made it pretty eerie.
I remember in 74 watching Dan Curtis Dracula starring Jack Palance on CBS Friday Night movie as well. I remember this film as well only I caught it on CBS Late night in mid 70s in a double feature with Devil Dog: The Hound from Hell. I miss those days.
True fact: In October of 1996 I *did* go to Castle Dracula in Romania, in fact I spent the night in the ruins! (Poenari Citadel, not Castle Bran which is a tourist attraction!) th-cam.com/video/26ahaAH-sA8/w-d-xo.html
It's a fantastic sequel. The gothic atmosphere is incredible. I do enjoy all the characters as well. Like you said this is a monstrous Dracula but its great to hear Lee speak again.
I am glad I found someone who loves Hammer films as much as I do. What a great bunch of movies'. The closest thing to a Hammer film after these movies ended was Frank Langella "s Dracula. That movie was made with the same style and great sets.
Seen the movie a couple of times. One on regular TV (edited of course) and the other times on TCM (unedited version). I remember the TV commercials for this film back in the 1960s. One commercial had an old lady. Forgot the dialog, but at the end, she smiles/laughs and shows her vampire teeth.
Amazing movie. Saw the priest on stage many years ago in Stratford in a Shakespeare production, and all I could think of was ‘wow…that’s the guy from Dracula Has Risen From The Grave’ 🤟🏼
Great video as always!! Yeah, this is a good favorite of mine. I loved the set designs, the characters traversing across the rooftops, loved the inn, I could definitely see myself stepping in there for a pint or two of Guinness. The characters are all likeable, I would've loved to see them explore the faith angle a little bit more, but all in all a great movie. Can anyone answer this question please? What happens to the priest after he says the prayer when Dracula is dying? The priest just sort of collapses. Does he pass out, does he die? Somebody told me there's a longer cut of the film that explains what happens, but I can't find it. Love the figure Daniel, I just got mine a couple of weeks ago. The good news is NECA is coming out with a companion piece. It's Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. No word on when it's being released. It was displayed at this years San Diego Comic Con. Keep up the good work and love the channel. I also love that there are soooooooooo many Hammer Horror fans out here, cool!!!!!
that Rocky training montage though hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! this is one Hammer Dracula film that I have never seen! I need to check it out....I was also yesterday years old when I found out that the "Let the right one in" remake was actually a Hammer FIlm! Who knew? Honestly I didnt know they were still making films
Just watched this movie a few days ago, but I’m enjoying the hell out of your re telling of it!!! my only beef with the film is the colored lenses they use whenever Dracula is around, especially toward the castle
Really enjoying your channel , have you reviewed Theater of blood ( comedy horror ) starring Vincent Price . It's one of my favourite Vincent Price movies
Freddie Francis deserves plenty of credit for this film. The eerie gels he used photographing The Innocents were used wisely to give the Count a terrifying glow. Signifying tons of evil, those wonderful close ups of Lee r outstanding. When Lee gets going no other actor can match him. A good cast, great sets especially the roof top scenes. The shocking moment when Dracula pulls the stake from his heart, absolutely terrifying. Carlson was beautiful as the damsel in distress. She really showed her acting chops in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. This Dracula film also has a great score. A real gothic feel. One of Hammer's best.
An unfortunate aspect of this film is that Christopher Lee was basically emotionally blackmailed to make this by Hammer; he was reluctant, but then got told "if you don't do this, we can't make the movie and all of your friends in the cast and crew will be out of work" and of course he couldn't do that.
I like Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, but two things that bothered me from the first time I watched this were it looks like it's daylight when the priest chases the barmaid through the park and I didn't understand why a creature that sustains itself on blood was leaving so much blood around. Also, even if the opening scene occurred a year before, Dracula was resurrected in Dracula, Prince of Darkness, so that doesn't explain where this body came from. My favorite of the Dracula sequels is Taste the Blood of Dracula because both Dracula and his targets are unlikeable and my favorite Michael Ripper Hammer role is in The Reptile.
I'm pretty certain I saw this a long time ago as a kid watching TV because that barmaid does seem very familiar, but my memory of it is foggy enough that this is an enlightening review. The opening is pretty good, but yeah, a bit confusing until they explain afterwards that it's a flashback but I don't think anyone can fault them for using that as their opening hook. I do like that the characters are so dynamic and, even with a bit of disagreement on personal views, play off each other so well. As for the ending, I think one way to say it is that they can't do the same thing every time and need to outdo themselves. I can understand the idea that having actual faith helps boost the effects of holy items and actions against the forces of evil, and that stronger enemies require more than a small artifact and that sincere faith is needed or else you're screwed. I like that it feeds into the idea that Dracula isn't just a vampire but so rotten with corruption and dark powers that even other vampires can't compete with that most means are useless against him.
Dracula has risen from the Grave is the best Dracula movie that I have ever seen . Christopher Lee was great when he spoke his lines and had such a great intimidating presence. In one roof top scene Paul charges him be he just extends one hand and stiff arms Paul causing him to roll down the roof. The final Dracula death scene was amazing! The priest had to summon all of his courage to pray to God in order to defeat Dracula while has impaled on a gold Cross.
Great movie! I’m gutted they never got to do a graphic version of it in the house of hammer comic series. That’s on my mind cos I just got the whole collection in a nice hardback book… but I digress. This + Prince of darkness prob my faves, tho the next one - taste the blood of Dracula is also a classic! Thanks man!
Obviously I am only guessing, but the way i always interpreted the beginning with the girl in the church bell, i assume as it happened a year before the rest of the film maybe Dracula got hungry on his way to find Diana at the monastery, and got Klove to call at that village.
@@josephmummerth Maybe Taste the Blood? My disc gives 1970 as release date. There's no confusion with Dracula A.D. 1972! LOL, I've got a nickname for TTBOD.. It's taste the spit of Ralph Bates!
A monsignor is an honorary title of address given to a priest. He is *not* a bishop, but being given the title monsignor is often a hint that he's been earmarked for elevation to bishop. Monsignors often act as a bishop's administrative deputies. (i.e. They do a lot of the grunt work in administering a diocese.)
This movie is also my number one, did you notice in the whole movie his eyes were blood red except when he went into Maria's bedroom they were normal. This movie running free on TYBI thanks my friend love to ya.
Weirdly I only know Ewan Hooper from one other thing, a re-occurring role in later episodes of a British 80s sitcom called Hi-De-Hi, as a baddie character. As he uses his own voice in that it was years before i realised it was the same person.
For some reason whether i was seeing his name in credits for this film, or the comedy 20 years later i convinced myself oh yeah this one is Ewan Hooper, the guy in the other thing is Ewan Cooper (wrong, i imagined Cooped from somewhere lol). It was only when i randomly checked him out on wiki, saw he was dubbed in this, and his other acting credits i realised.
After watching Daniel's video I rewatched Dracula Has Risen From The Grave. I had not seen it for years. Great Hammer classic. Now here is a question I need help on from anyone. My first Hammer film was one with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee . I forget the title , but at the climax of the movie Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee as Dracula were having a fight in Dracula's castle. Suddenly Peter Cushing runs over to the drapes pulls them down to let the sunlight in. Dracula crumbles into dust. Does any one remember the name of that movie ? Was it Horror of Dracula ? I would love to see it again whatever it was. Thanks.
I totally agree! A fabulous film with great characters and story, some of the best cinematography and atmosphere since The Brides of Dracula " and Christopher Lee at his best! It also has some of the scariest music in a Hammer film! Can ya tell I love this movie????
I totally agree with you Daniel-this is probably the best sequel Hammer did. Okay, except for Revenge of Frankenstein. And Quatermass And The Pit. But definitely the best Dracula sequel. The atheist situation leads to some complications in the staking scene, and the scene where the priest burns Zena’s body is pretty heavy stuff. Christopher Lee is always better when he can flex that baritone. Veronica is my personal favorite Hammer babe. I first saw this around age 5 and it terrified me (it was my first Hammer experience.) Christopher just floating around in that basement will always be creepy, no matter what age I am .
Just recently purchased this sequel.... might be my favorite Hammer film = Christopher Lee has the right mix of animalistic vamp & seductor. The sets are realistic, the actors play their parts well(no major plot holes),love the ending + Veronica Carlson 😍 Meat & potatoes;in regards to Hammer films! Totally agree with your synopsis/rating Daniel!!! 9 out of 10.
Haven't seen this in decades, but in my memory it was not as strong as what you're saying. Maybe I'll give it another look. I always felt that the series shelved off pretty steeply in quality after Prince of Darkness.
My 13 year old son and I watch this every Halloween now for the last few years. We call it "Dracula Gets Locked Out Of His House And Is Mad About It!"
🤣 I love that! I'm soooo calling this film that now!
That actually sounds like a Hammer title. lol
Haha. That also sounds like a good title for Love at First Bite with George Hamilton.
I watch the first Hammer Dracula movie every Halloween day, but this is also a great choice, being the other most atmospheric and the sequel with by far the best characters!
Two important ingredients in any Hammer movie: Bright red blood and heaving bosoms.
Ingrid Pitt, even though she’s not in this, made two significant contributions to the Hammer brand LOL
I think this was the first Hammer movie that went all in on that.
Very true.
@@patrickdoherty4527 Indeed. It is just kind of classier than later Hammer movies still.
My family lived near the studios years ago. I was baptised in the church which is used for the externals in the Hammer Dracula movies 😂
Awesome!
What a great story !!
Cool, which church was that?
That's awesome!!!
Thats amazing 👏

Paul looks like Roger Daltrey, should be singing "Won't get fooled again"
Nice
@@berliner0 I was also thinking about how he reminded me of Roger Daltry.
Hi Daniel! Grew up watching Hammer movies. They have a cozy place in my horror heart. Also, that Christopher Lee Dracula figure is SOOOO cool.
I believe Freddie Francis DID win the Academy award for best cinematography for GLORY.
I think this was perhaps Christopher Lee's most physical portrayal of Dracula. I some of the other movies he's very static and only has a scene or two where he easily overpowers either one of his vampire brides or some would be hero. This movie is like a Dracula/slasher hybrid, I adore it. Glad we’re still talking about it in 2024!

Anyone notice that Lee's cloak collar style changed from "Prince Of Darkness" while Drac was on ice?
The newspaper ads of that time had this tagline: "You just can't keep a good man down."
I saw this movie in the year of its release at a big cinema (now a live theatre venue) that stands close beside Victoria Station in London and I can verify on that occasion that there was a very long queue to get in that stretched far down the road beforehand.
My favorite Dracula movie with Christopher Lee. Saw it as a kid and i couldn't sleep that night.

The best part of this film is the priest that looks exactly like Larry Fine of the Three Stooges !
This was definitely the start of a major shift for Hammer - focusing more on younger characters instead of stuffy old professors and detectives etc.
It has always bothered me, why didn't Dracula just get the priest to remove the cross from the castle door, would have saved himself a whole lot of trouble.

I watched them repeatedly when I owned them on VHS and wore out the tapes! Getting them on DVD has been a problem because they would be bundled with "Dracula Ain't it Dumb" or "Taste The Blood of Boredom"!
Not too different from my top 3:
1 Risen From The Grave
2 AD: 1972
3 Scars Of Dracula
Apart from Scars the others are available to buy on Amazon movies.
I agree with you on the first two but I thought the small budget really showed on Scars. It's probably my least favourite. My top 3 would be:
1. Dracula (Horror Of Dracula)
2. Brides Of Dracula
Great review! I need to rewatch this one :)
I miss those days.
fantastic channel !
Recently discovered ur channel really enjoying the content! I started binge watching classic hammer dracula films lol 🎃🎃🦇🦇
Next to Bela Ligosi Christopher Lee is the best Dracula! And I love this movie! It's freaking awesome!
Amazing movie. Saw the priest on stage many years ago in Stratford in a Shakespeare production, and all I could think of was ‘wow…that’s the guy from Dracula Has Risen From The Grave’ 🤟🏼
I'd like to see a top ten haunted asylums list!
This is a great sequel. I love how powerful Dracula is in this movie. Xx
I’d love to know why they are always Paul and Maria 😂
It’s just known as the sign of the cross. For me all Lee Dracula movies as is most Lee movies are 10 of 10
Genuflecting.
Yeah! They’re still making stuff, like also The Woman in Black and The Lodge.
@@cobwebschannel I saw that when I started deep diving! Who says you cant learn something every day lol
Just watched this movie a few days ago, but I’m enjoying the hell out of your re telling of it!!! my only beef with the film is the colored lenses they use whenever Dracula is around, especially toward the castle
I've always been very fond of it, even among Hammer films.
Oh man.... when Cobweb eats your Philosophy Homework...
I love your videos. Esp..... during the October month. Do you do this during the Christmas season to?
Best vampire movie of all time ❤
Visually so beautiful
This is the reason why I became a C.Lee Fan 👍
It shows what a decent, considerate man Lee was.
I saw and touched(shouldn't have)the giant cross when there was a Hammer exhibition at the Barbican Centre, back in the 90s.
This is the last Dracula film I am yet to watch with Christopher Lee and I’m super glad I’ve got something great to look forward to :)
I would rate Brides of Dracula and Prince of Darkness over RFTG but I do like it. It's underrated. It has a nice fairytale quality to it.
Love the t-shirt, dude.
Paul is a liberal arts major. So he'll be working at the inn for the rest of his life.
this one and dracula 1970 are the two best !the latter film is one of the very few where dracula looks as he is described in the novel !
1972...
@@nomadmarauder-dw9re I`ve seen it listed as 1970, 1971 and 1972 ! not sure why !
@@josephmummerth Maybe Taste the Blood? My disc gives 1970 as release date. There's no confusion with Dracula A.D. 1972! LOL, I've got a nickname for TTBOD.. It's taste the spit of Ralph Bates!
Have you reviewed Hammer House of Horror?
A monsignor is an honorary title of address given to a priest. He is *not* a bishop, but being given the title monsignor is often a hint that he's been earmarked for elevation to bishop. Monsignors often act as a bishop's administrative deputies. (i.e. They do a lot of the grunt work in administering a diocese.)
This movie is also my number one, did you notice in the whole movie his eyes were blood red except when he went into Maria's bedroom they were normal. This movie running free on TYBI thanks my friend love to ya.
I love this film. This video was next on my playlist after watching Chase at AVAPopCultute review his top 10 foreign horror films. Great work!
Have you seen “The Torture Chamber of Dr, Sadism” starring Christopher Lee?
Its such a great gothic movie,
Weirdly I only know Ewan Hooper from one other thing, a re-occurring role in later episodes of a British 80s sitcom called Hi-De-Hi, as a baddie character.
My favorite in the series, too. I like how religion plays a dominate role in the film. Prince of Darknees and the first are my second favorites.
Great video! I agree this sequel is awesome!
Thanks.
Yep, Horror of Dracula!
Absolutely perfect sequel and Hammer gothic horror in general. Even the film discolouration adds to the excellent atmosphere!
