The Haunted Palace is my absolute favourite on this list! Just adore the atmosphere and genuinely unsettling prosthetics. It’s just an insanely beautiful and spooky film.
Yeah, I love the grotesque creatures, the claustrophobic descent into the laboratory underground, the sort of stilted tone of the dialogue that mimics Lovecraft's use of an obsolete prose style, Sarandon's performance, it's probably the closest adaptation to Lovecraft out of all the films.

Die Farbe is a German adaptation of The Color Out of Space. I think it came out in 2010. It didn't have a huge budget but still very well done. I also like The Unnamable from 1988.
So many people shat all over "Color out of Space", and I have no idea why. It definitely didn't have the same feel as earlier Lovecraft adaptations, but I thought it was done quite well overall.

Great review! I saw "Haunted Palace" back in 64 before I knew about Lovecraft. (It was double billed with "Tammy and the Doctor"!) And I hadn't heard of "Dagon." "Shadow over Innsmouth" is my favorite Lovecraft story so I'll plan to see that ASAP. Thank you!
Lovecraft didn't write Color out of Space because he wanted to depict weird aliens, he wrote it because he learned about ultraviolet and infrared radiation and the concept of colors humans couldn't see terrified him (he was terrified of basically everything). That's why the color infects its surroundings - the color is acting like radiation, and Lovecraft had a pretty poor grasp of physics but enough to adapt the concept
In case you weren’t aware, “The Haunted Palace” what’s the touted by the filmmakers as having a script that was a fusion of the works of both Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft. That explains why some of the elements in that film don’t necessarily fit in the Lovecraft universe.
I was invited over to a corset costume fitting by Barbera just the other day, oh wait, that might have been a dream. Yep, From Beyond definitely in my top ten horror films of all time.
Just saw "From Beyond" for the first time, and was completely blown away. Also, completely agree re: "Color Out Of Space", which is tipped way over the top by Colin Stetson's amazing score. His "Hereditary" score is another masterpiece.
The only movies I have seen either on the big screen, or television broadcast are " The Haunted Palace, " The Dunwich Horror ", and the " Lovecraftian " " Die Monster Die " with Boris Karloff. After all these years, still to see " The Crimson Cult " with Lee and Karloff.
Great video. I really love the stuff you do it's great and there are some awesome recs here. Would love to see you do a video on similar genres and topics. Stuff more in the vein of Mouth of madness
Great list, can’t believe you left out (or mentioned) The Valdemar Legacy duology, which gives you visually amazing gothic horror, Lovecraft (he literally appears in the movie), Paul Naschy and Cthulu is actually onscreen for a few minutes. Totally a must watch for you man…
Love your channel. I watch everything on it. One teeny tiny quibble: Dunwich is pronounced in the British manner- Dun' ich. In other words, don't pronounce the W. Sorry. I used to pronounce it with the W too. And yeah, they also got it wrong in the movie (fantastic Les Baxter soundtrack though!) I'll go hide now...
Well done but I can't believe you left out THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS (2011) by HPLHS. An instant classic. It's on another level than any other Lovecraft film.
I'm huge Lovecraft fan. My list is of course, the yuzna versions, reanimator and from beyond, and the necronomicon, but a modern classic is absolutely ' color out of space ' with Nick Cage 😂❤
Some fantastic recommendations here. The silent film adaptation of Call of Cthulhu is so freaking good. The Resurrected is really underrated. The scene where they're exploring Arthur Curwin's lab and they see one of his "mistakes" coming at them in the dark and then the lights go out! Hoooo boy that was such a great moment. Dan O'Bannon left this world far too soon! Necronimcon is silly but Whispers ending was so fucked up it wedged in my teenage brain when I saw it on VHS ages ago. I need to catch up on some of the more recent adaptations.
I would've loved to have seen Haunted Palace on big screen. Vincent Price's daughter came to our theater to host some of Vincent's movies 3 years running. Theater of Blood, the Fly, and a triple feature of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe movies
I looked after Richard Stanley a few months ago when he visited our film festival, and he confirmed to me that Dunwich is going ahead. He told me two possible cast members, but I probably shouldn't divulge. I can, however, confirm that Barbara Crampton is just a sweetheart. Really cool lady.
Good list. Always enjoy your sincerity. I largely agree with your list and your top three are basically my top three as well. I'd definitely put The Whisperer in Darkness in my list, probably in my top 5. I'd also put Call of Cthulu a bit higher and The Resurrected a spot or two higher. Very good list though... probably your list that most aligns with my list.
Die Monster Die is certainly not a masterpiece but it's an enjoyable watch. I'm not a huge Lovecraft guy so I don't know how faithful it is, but it has some nice creepy atmosphere and solid performances.
We need the perfect storm for the 'great' hpl film. A good director, an enthusiasm for portmanteau films, the courage not to stray from the plots. Probably four stories. 😊😊😊
And once more you manage to point me at a film I haven't even thought about since being unsettled by it's VHS box art as a kid. I look forward to watching The Resurrected and your list of non-Lovecraft cosmic horror if you do one of those.
Thanks for the well informed rundown. I'd personally put The Resurrected at #1 as far as being a good adaptation of HPL but most of these are fun movies either way. How about a video covering cosmic horror and Lovecraftian films that aren't adaptations? That opens up the playing ground a little wider.
Whisperer in Darkness is by far my favorite. Also made by Lovecraft Historical Society, but instead of mimicking a silent film like Call of Cthulhu, it goes for more of a Universal horror style. Absolutely fantastic adaptation! Highly recommended.
My friend picked up Reanimator from a video store back in the day and it was rated X. We watched it and I don't usually like too much gore but I loved it. Jeffrey Combs carried it so well and it was so over the top it was comedic. My friend thought I was crazy for laughing so much. It's ice to hear someone else appreciate the comedic moments
YES! From Beyond is my favorite Lovecraft adaptation as well. Have you checked out The Old Ones yet from Vinegar Syndrome? I thought it was fun and it has some funny moments. It's more on the low budget side, but it kind of feels like a Wizard of Oz done Lovecraft.
I saw From Beyond in the theater. I got a promotional red plastic visor with a rubber pineal gland attached to it. No idea what ever happened to that. I would put Color out of Space above it in my own list though.
The Haunted Palace is one of my favorite Vincent Price movies, but I actually had no idea it was from a Lovecraft story! Shows you how much I know about that topic...but that's gonna change now!
Although not technically a "movie," the episode Pickman's Model from the television series Night Gallery is a very good adaptation of a Lovecraft story.
I'm not sure whether it was one of your vids or elsewhere that I commented similarly, but Dagon (a solid, fun flick despite the noted wonky cgi) always cracked me up because they just cast a guy that looked as much like Jeffrey Combs as possible! Even my horror-loving buddy referred to it as a Combs' movie and argued with me about it!😂
It wasn’t a movie, but Stuart Gordon directed an adaptation of the Dreams in the Witch-House for the show Masters of Horror. It is relatively faithful to the source material. I should track that series down… I haven’t thought about it in years.

Greetings; I watched Dagon and was pleasantly surprised to hear the villagers speaking Galego, a language related to both Spanish and Portuguese; So the movie was probably filmed on the coast of Galicia, northwestern Spain.
@@baronvonswankenstein Yes, but it should people noted that many people who were born and live in this area (Galicia) do not see themselves as Spaniards, but Galegos. I really enjoy the HPLS movies, they definitely work very well considering the budgets. I kinda wish they had access to current tech. 30 Monedas/30 Coins stars Macarena Gómez from Dagon and is an absolute must-see for fans of the genre. She'saged as if she's made some kind of supernatural pact... Re-Animator deserves a mention of the soundtrack, the film's is awesome, but the Richard Band soundtrack takes it to another level.
I love Lovecraft adaptations! Have you seen Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural? I think the director said it was inspired by The Shadow over Innsmouth. It's kind of like a very low budget American version of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. You might dig it. Unfortunately it's only on DVD but it's a Synapse release and actually looks pretty good still.
Surprised you missed the fairly recent version of the Whisperer in Darkness also made by the HPL Society is excellent. It is also very stylised. As for the Dunwich Horror, even though the effects are indeed crappy, the psychedelic visuals seem somehow very apt for cosmic horror. And Richard Stanley's Dunwich Horror is the not yet made movie I most want to see made.
