Such a fun list! Glad to see Halloween on it, Suspiria, and so many others! Love getting Horror movie recommendations from your vids! Do you plan on doing other Horror movie content from across the world? I'd love to see more of those movies and how their cultures play into it!
Race with the Devil scared the crap out of me as a child, it taps into the same kind of paranoia as Rosemary’s Baby and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Growing up in NYC, Satanic Panic wasn’t that big of a thing, but among children we had urban legends about devil worshippers in the wooded areas.
I recently rewatched The Omen and absolutely loved it. I remember thinking it was okay as a kid, but really enjoyed it now. I bought the Scream Factory box set because my wife wanted to watch them before we buy The First Omen. We watched 1, 2, and 3 and just thought it was a great trilogy. I also like 4 and the remake, but the first 3 I think are classic.
I'm so glad to see someone else likes the entire Omen trilogy! I love all three movies. How was "The First Omen"? I missed my chance to catch it in theaters.
@jonathonriddle9922 I still haven't gotten a copy of The First Omen yet. But I really hope it keeps the creepy atmospheric vibes of the original trilogy.
The music is my favorite. It gets really horrifying just listening to the wcores. Ive been binging the 70s horror lately so im excited you did this video. Theres a lot of obscure atuff out there thats really good.
I was driving the day of Halloween, and they played the theme music to “exorcist”, it scared the hell out of me, in the day! 😂 Music really does trigger memories! I could see that kid’s scary face in my mind, and it made me feel uneasy.
"Flesh for Frankenstein" and "Blood for Dracula" were filmed back to back. As soon as "Frankenstein" completed filming, they began filming "Dracula". Also, love that you included Romero's "Season of the Witch" on your list. I agree, it's one of his best and most underrated films!
That's an excellent call Daniel naming Jaws #1! I saw it in the theater during it's original release when I was 10 years old and I've loved it since. It's #3 on my all time list; behind The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and OutlawJosey Wales. On my personal 70's Horror List I would have included Salems Lot and Brotherhood Of Satan. Thank you for another terrific video!!
I saw several of these films in a theater when they were brand new. The chauffeur in "Burnt Offerings"! That smile! Gave me nightmares for weeks! "The Omen" was fantastic. Beautifully photographed and acted with that great Jerry Goldsmith score. One movie i adore that you did not mention is "House of Dark Shadows", one of the best vampre movies ever!!!!
Yeah. 70s had some of the most grounded, gritty, and unsettling films with great dialog, lighting, and cinematography. A really great one that is often overlooked and makes my top ...lets say 12 is Horror Express (1972) , which rounds off a trilogy of different takes on The Thing premise. I'm really surprised it didn't make your 30!!! Count Yorga is a top 5 vampire film of all time for me. Rabid is another I really dig. Oh, and Tourist Trap is a trip and darn good too. A few here that you list that I've been intrigued about and missed over the years are Race with the Devil and Twins of Evil. This is the second video you have instilled interest for Season of the Witch in me. Agreed on Jaws - #1 film of all time.
I recently was able to find this movie on DVD and was super excited about it! Paid not a crazy amount, but a little more than I would pay for a DVD. But was so worth it!
Another excellent video, thanks for putting the time in to post these! What's your take on Bob Clark's "Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things" ? I used to watch this on channel 11 (WPIX) in New York on Saturday's late night "Chiller Theater". Scared the hell out of me back then.
Jaws is my favorite movie of all time so I love that its your # 1 here! 🦈 I agree with you in that I've never considered it a horror film but rather action/drama/thriller. Also, you got me curious to watch some of the Paul Naschy films.
Coffee and Cobwebs is the perfect combination to start the day! Great video! So many great movies on your list. Thanks for reminding me to pull out some movies I haven't watched in a while. Happy Halloween to you and your family! 🎃👻🦇
Another great video and list! So many great horror titles here from a magnificent decade of horror! The 1970s is where I cut my teeth on horror and as a young boy then teen in the 70s, man, I was watching as many of these movies as I possibly could. Thank you for the video!
Really great list, Daniel! And your enthusiasm is as infectious as a vampire bite. Maybe you should have mentioned that the novel BURNT OFFERINGS inspired Stephen King to write THE SHINING. There are many similarities between the two and King has acknowledged it. Great horror films in the 70’s and your list nails it! 💀
My list would include just about everything you said, but also "The Sentinel", super scary 70s movie if you haven't seen it!! Happy Halloween Daniel! :)
I finally watched The Wicker Man for the first time recently (one of your videos gave me the enthusiasm to sit down and watch it). And I really enjoyed it. It's definitely not my favorite folk horror movie; that still goes to The Blood on Satan's Claw. But I think Lord Summerisle is officially my favorite horror movie villain ever. Thank you for finally giving me the impetus to watch it.
I saw the documentary *Burnt Offerings* and apparently he had got tired of the Vampire Stereotype and wanted to play someone scary but that looked normal.
@@starscreamthecruel8026 yeah according to AVGN, after a while he hated being in all the hammer draculas mostly because he absolutely hated the dialogue they wrote for him and apparently the directors got him to keep coming because he was keeping lots of folk working and employed
Cool list, a few I have never seen and will check out. So many cool horrors from that era didn't make the list because there were so many! The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, Deathdream, Shock Waves and my fave Jaws ripoff Piranha probably would have made my list over some of the ones on yours I haven't seen.
Your list is fantastic! I too love The Omen. It's more entertaining than The Exorcist and has more quotable lines too. "Look at me, Damien! It's all for you!" David Warner and Patrick Troughton are excellent....but the whole cast performs well
I would have also put It's Alive 1974 on the list too. My Dad loved horror movies, growing up in the 70's, he took my younger brother and I to see them all, I was 9 when I saw the Exorcist, then came The Omen, Black Friday, JAWS, and many more. Some of the smaller theatres in Hollywood would show earlier 70's horror movies.
@@alienmindwarp3455 Totally! I wouldn't trade growing up in the 70's for any other decade. I loved the 80's, they had some really good horror that I raised my Son watching along with the classics, but nothing compares to the 70's
Everyone knows that the Paul Lynde Halloween special 1976 with Witchie Poo, The Wicked Witch of the west played by Margaret Hammelton and Musical guests KISS was the best!!!! Well not a movie but I sure loved it! I was 7. Lol
I am really enjoying your channel - I love that you included Blood on Satan's Claw on your list! It is one of those movies from my childhood that, even today, still gives me chills. I was really surprised to see that you rated The Exorcist so low on your list. I really liked that you gave the reasons why you rated it so low when so many people place it in their top 5 and number one choices (myself included), but it really did surprise me. Regardless of how it may be classified (which genre of horror it falls under), it is truly a masterpiece of cinema. I don't think there is one thing I would change about any aspect of it. I was more surprised at your ranking when I saw how high you ranked The Omen. Keep up the great videos - looking forward to seeing new content. By the way - is Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things mentioned in any of your videos? I haven't seen a "favorite zombie movies" video yet so, if you haven't already done one, that would be great to see. Cheers
Thanks for the video! Love 70's horror. I just picked up Burnt Offerings on blu ray. I used to watch Burnt Offerings on TBS back when I was younger and it scared the crap out of me. A few on this list I haven't seen, so I've added them to my list.
I think the reason why the demon in The Exorcist doesn't do much is because its goal was to mess with Father Karras. It wanted them to try and exorcise it so it could work on the cracks in Karras' faith and try to break him.
I had to wait until 82 to see Dawn of the Dead as it was on Englands video nasty list. My older brother got a copy then when I was 7/8 and I loved it. My favourite Romero film 👍
Great List! So many of the movies on your list are fantastic! Jaws is my favorite film. I still need to watch Phantasm. I have no idea why I have slept on that film. MY Top 5 70's Horror Films: 1) Jaws 2) Halloween 3) Alien 4) Suspiria 5) The Omen Salem's Lot, The Stepford Wives, and The Night Strangler would also make my 70's Top 10 horror movie list, along with Black Christmas and The Exorcist.
Great list! I get the sense that this could have easily become a top 100! I'd like to give shout-outs to a few neglected classics: The Car (1977) The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) Madhouse (1974) Theater of Blood (1973) Martin (1977) A Bay of Blood (1971) Frenzy (1972) Daughters of Darkness (1971)
Thoughtful and well justified list of your favourites. I'm not sure 1978s Coma qualifies as horror, even though it scared me silly as a kid, but I think it's the kind of movie you would like if you haven't seen it (based on how you talk about movies).
Great list! A few I haven't seen and want to check out, especially the Paul Naschy movies. So many great horror movies in the 70's...Madhouse, House of Dark Shadows; Dan Curtis' TV productions of Dracula, Frankenstein, Picture of Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Turn of the Screw; The Night Stalker, The Night Strangler, The Norliss Tapes, Phantom of the Paradise, Necromancy, Equinox, I Monster, The Creeping Flesh, Blacula, Scream Blacula Scream, Count Yorga Vampire, Return of Count Yorga...just to name a few
I don't know if you pick up any Deaf Crocodile releases but since you're a fan of Blood on Satan's Claw, you should look up The Outcasts. Robert Wynne-Simmons wrote and directed it and he wrote the script for Blood on Satan's Claw. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds pretty cool. I think it's coming out in December. They also recently released another folk horror(I've heard it's more of a drama with eerie horror elements though) movie called Savage Hunt of King Stakh. I haven't seen it but the trailer has some really cool imagery. Great list! For me, Black Christmas is the scariest movie of all time. I absolutely love it. I rewatch it once or twice a year. Carrie is probably my most rewatched horror movie. Carrie and Suspiria are definitely the movies I rewatched the most when I was in my 20s and I still rewatch them every 2 or 3 years.
Love your videos and especially your appreciation for older movies. The 70s is my favorite decade for horror, definitely. Black Christmas is my favorite horror movie (so I hope to see it go higher on your list😉 As for Jaws, I lived it. I do not think a movie made more of a real impact on people's psycy than Jaws. Truly, no one wanted to go in the water after seeing it, back in it's heyday.
Wonderful list. "Prophecy" and "Blood on Satan's Claw" are two of my favorite movies from the 70s. I was surprised that "Legend of Hell House" didn't make the list, though. Very interesting haunted house movie. Definitely worth watching if you've never seen it. I'm also a big fan of some of the TV movies from the period, like "Moon of the Wolf" and "A Cold Night's Death." Maybe do a "Best horror TV movies" list sometime...most of them were made on such a low budget that they don't stack up very well next to theatrical releases, but if you said "All right, we're only going to look at the ones that had the same set of constraints in terms of budget, network requirements, time and pacing limitations, etc," which ones would be the best? I think a lot of them qualify as good, cheap, cheesy fun.
Both are films with Shelley Winters: Who Slew Auntie Roo (1972) and What's the Matter with Helen (1971). Also, The Mephisto Waltz (1971) with Alan Alda and Jackie Bisset.
You need to see the 1971 film The Andromeda Strain" and don't cut any of it out. It is a forgotten CLASSIC. You will LOVE it. It is wild and exciting in a sort of science fiction manner. It could happen real life!
I agree that The Omen > The Exorcist. I just find the idea of the AntiChrist/Devil taking over the entire world more coherently terrifying than an ancient Mesopotamian personification of a wind taking the time out of his busy schedule to possess a little girl and test a couple of priests. The Sentinel (1977), The Asphyx (1972), and Audrey Rose (1977) are among my favourite underrated 1970s horror movies.
My brother and I saw Prophecy in our little hometown theater when it came out and it SCARED US TO DEATH. Up to that time, I cannot think of any other movie that scared us as much as that one. We lived on a lake, our dad worked in a paper mill that was upriver and known for dumping chemicals into the water and killing fish, so...yeah. There were quite a few reasons why that movie terrorized us.
Scared me too! ...and I didn't have any of those real life circumstances to help it along either. We had just moved next to a small wooded area when I saw Grizzly at 11, and I was terrified that night!
I’m so happy I came across your channel. Even more happy when you said your weren’t about to watch a Christmas horror during October. I said out loud to myself YES EXACTLY he gets it
Thanks for the list. The 70s is the one decade I struggle with in horror. Love the 50s B movies...dig the Gothic 30s and 40s...really like the 60s, 80s were s golden era. Don't get me wrong, 70s had some all time greats, but it did seem like a feast or famine decade for horror.
OMG! "Alice Sweet Alice" is such a great film. As a Christian, I am a put off by the idea of a Christian being so obsessed with Christian teachings that they feel is ok to have a "ends justify the means" mentality. Regardless, is a unique an interesting film
Hi Daniel. Your list is great. I love horror from the 70's, Tales from the Crypt, House that dripped Blood, Asylum, The Omen, Carrie all great ones to watch for Halloween ! xx
Very cool list, love seeing The Wicker Man so high! As a horror fan, there were a lot of deep cuts here I was happy to see, and many I had never heard of (admittedly I'm not as big on vampires and werewolves as you are). Surprised to see omissions like Don't Look Now or Deep Red, but our differences are what makes the world interesting! Also, love that shirt!
If you love "Black Christmas" and you're a fan of Bob Clark's films, you really owe it to yourself to watch "Deathdream". It came just before the other, and I think it's actually better. It's a really underrated movie that's not talked about a whole lot, but don't let that put you off. It's awesome.
That movie is super creepy! It's Tom Savini's first film too. I have the dvd from Blue Underground, and the actual film starts with the alternate title of Dead of Night. Cool extras, including audio commentary by Bob Clark.
I too like the Omen better than the Exorcist. I would have added to your list: Zombie, Tourist Trap, Theater of Blood, Bay of Blood, The Last House on the Left, and maybe my #2 70's horror film: Martin by Romero.
I would personally add "Don't Look Now," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," "Last House on the Left," "When a Stranger Calls," and "Profondo Rosso"
I fully endorse “Jaws” being number one!

Absolutely! So many of the modern horror films I'm like, "Eh? What? Was that supposed to be scary?"

Yes - "The Strange Possession of Mrs. Oliver" is TV - but?! Your list of the sixties: "The Mad Room", "Hour of the Wolf", "The Blood Demon (Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel)", "Eye of the Devil", "The Fearless Vampire Killers", "The Witches", "Fanatic", "Planet of the Vampires", "Repulsion", "Kwaidan", "Onibaba", "The Whip and the Body", "Il demonio", "The Innocents" and ... ? Greetings from SH ... Jörg
Speaking of Murders in the Rue Morgue...RIP Paul Di'anno
Definitely gonna have to check out more Paul Nashcy movies....based on your list! Some of my favorites: Phantasm,The House That Dripped Blood, Frank Langela's Dracula,Dawn of the Dead,The Omen,The Vampire Lovers & Blood On Satan's Claw.
Still scares the crap outta me, everything from the sacrifice right up till the end is adrenaline pumped nightmare fuel
Race with the devil was awsome grew up watching that as a kid
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What incredibly intriguing movies!
On my personal 70's Horror
List I would have included Salems Lot and Brotherhood Of Satan.
What!!?? No Messiah of Evil!!?? Absolute Top 30 1970's material, certainly top 50, please revisit.
I would add The Brood to the list. The creepy children gave me nightmares Also the Duel a great TV movie that scared me as a child.
Both excellent films.
I have to say the casting of Ralph Bates and Martina Beswick works very well in Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde. They look very alike.
For sure.
Hell yeah
I recently was able to find this movie on DVD and was super excited about it! Paid not a crazy amount, but a little more than I would pay for a DVD. But was so worth it!
I need to get dvd! A favorite!
@@TomFrichekNo, not like that you perv. 😂
Another great video. Happy Halloween!!
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Your list brought back childhood memories as I started watching Hammer when I was 3, it apparently helped me sleep. Love your list 😊👍💜🐾👋
Rewatching The Exorcist as an adult I find everything before the actual exorcism so much more interesting than the rest of the film
Hell yeah
It’s all great!
Same! I wish the film had stayed more subdued and eerie instead of swinging for the fence in the second and third acts.
Fantastic list and video, Daniel!
I appreciate it!
So glad you enjoyed!
Another great video and list! So many great horror titles here from a magnificent decade of horror! The 1970s is where I cut my teeth on horror and as a young boy then teen in the 70s, man, I was watching as many of these movies as I possibly could. Thank you for the video!
Amazing list!! My favorite decade for my favorite genre. I just kept nodding and agreeing with each film you mention.
I love Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders. Glad you enjoyed it.
My list would include just about everything you said, but also "The Sentinel", super scary 70s movie if you haven't seen it!! Happy Halloween Daniel! :)
Totally agree about "The Sentinel" -- it is one of my favs!
@@fizzgig3000 Right? Sooo creepy!
That's one of my faves of that era also...forgot to mention it in my comment ;)
No "Theater of Blood"(1973)? It's easily one of Vincent Price's greatest performances.
yeah baby! got my coffee, here we gooooooooo!!!!
Welcome to the party pal!
@@cobwebschannel you wound me deeply with the low ranking of Amityville...lol jk - love seeing where stuff comes in on your lists brother!
haha I like it! It’s good!
@cobwebschannel I know!! I just wanted to practice being the person on the other side of a list video giving someone grief hahahahaha
It's evening here where I am and watching the video, but I gotta get some coffee!
This list is VERY much appreciated! Just in time too!! I love 70s horror movies too!🙂👍🎃🎃👻👻 Thank you, and Happy Halloween!!🎃
Thanks for checking it out!
The house they filmed the outside of Amityville Horror is in New Jersey…my sister (who lived near there) drove me past it…
I think I read somewhere that in an interview, Sir Christopher Lee said his favorite role of all he played was Lord Summerisle
Great list, love all of these, with a few i havent seen but will target for viewing soon! Thanks
I had cool 70s parents too!
Saw Jaws at 8, Grizzly, Piranha, Eaten Alive, the Prophecy, etc... what a great time to be a kid.
@@alienmindwarp3455 Totally! I wouldn't trade growing up in the 70's for any other decade. I loved the 80's, they had some really good horror that I raised my Son watching along with the classics, but nothing compares to the 70's
Burnt Offerings freaked me out when I was a kid.
I would also add COUNT YORGA, VAMPIRE to my list!
Blackula was another good scary vampire movie.
Good list Daniel,I haven't seen it for a while but I used to enjoy Race with the Devil
MY Top 5 70's Horror Films:
1) Jaws
2) Halloween
3) Alien
4) Suspiria
5) The Omen
Salem's Lot, The Stepford Wives, and The Night Strangler would also make my 70's Top 10 horror movie list, along with Black Christmas and The Exorcist.
Great list! I get the sense that this could have easily become a top 100! I'd like to give shout-outs to a few neglected classics:
The Car (1977)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Madhouse (1974)
Theater of Blood (1973)
Martin (1977)
A Bay of Blood (1971)
Frenzy (1972)
Daughters of Darkness (1971)
Thoughtful and well justified list of your favourites. I'm not sure 1978s Coma qualifies as horror, even though it scared me silly as a kid, but I think it's the kind of movie you would like if you haven't seen it (based on how you talk about movies).
Sounds cheesy but I'm working in Beirut away from my kids, and your videos keeping me going. Just wanted to say thanks
I really appreciate that. It must be tough being away from your kiddos. Hope you get to be with them again soon!
Race with the Devil was the first movie I watched on our first cable tv service we ever had when I was a kid.
Hey man! I haven’t jumped into Deaf Crocodile at all yet, so I’ll have to look those up.
I saw it when I was 8 back in 75, and I wouldn't even go in a lake! 😂
Simply the best decade in cinema history.
This video is a sit back with a double scotch video 🥃
Both are films with Shelley Winters: Who Slew Auntie Roo (1972) and What's the Matter with Helen (1971). Also, The Mephisto Waltz (1971) with Alan Alda and Jackie Bisset.
The first two “Omen” movies are great!
I remember reading the novelization of “Prophecy” when I was eleven!
Super great selection. love it! 🖤👏🏻
You need to see the 1971 film The Andromeda Strain" and don't cut any of it out. It is a forgotten CLASSIC. You will LOVE it. It is wild and exciting in a sort of science fiction manner. It could happen real life!
One of the best horror films of its decade.
I said out loud to myself YES EXACTLY he gets it
AND you timestamp
Great list! I would include Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (1973 Warner Archive Blu Ray) and Hausu (1977 Criterion Collection Blu Ray)
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is definitely underrated.
@ YES! Creepy AF!🔥
I think the people who complain about some of your choices being slow and boring are more into the modern MCU style films of today. Great list mate!
The only thing I really remember about Dawn Of The Dead is that creepy but catchy music at the mall :) Its like imprinted in my brain.
Great list!!! I'd be curious to see what you think of Lucio Fulci's Zombie (1979), and Alice Sweet Alice (1976).
I like them both! Zombie especially was super close to making this list.
I love horror from the 70's, Tales from the Crypt, House that dripped Blood, Asylum, The Omen, Carrie all great ones to watch for Halloween ! xx
I still have VHS of Andy Warhol's Dracula with Udo Kier.
Should have mentioned that the Nosferatu remake was made by Werner Herzog.
I love the 70s horror too! Have a several in my dvd library!
Drinking coffee and eating a chocolate chip pumpkin bar...while watching this video!
That sounds like a fantastic combination to pair with Horror film list! 😋😁
I'm drinking a Belgian ale, out of the appropriate glassware, of course. 🍷
@@alienmindwarp3455 I probably knew that about Tom Savini, and forgot. Good to know.
I too like the Omen better than the Exorcist. I would have added to your list: Zombie, Tourist Trap, Theater of Blood, Bay of Blood, The Last House on the Left, and maybe my #2 70's horror film: Martin by Romero.
All great choices! Zombie and Last House on the Left would have been the next 2 for me, and on a different day, could’ve been here.
So glad I stumbled across your channel
