Kudo is a Budo(武道)。 Budo is commonly translated as “martial arts”, but I believe this term fails to capture its full essence. In Japanese, “Bu(武)” means “battle” and “Do(道)” means “the way of life”. "The way" has the meaning that you have to keep walking. You must not let your age defeat you. No matter how old you are, you have to fight or you have to be able to fight. If you do the right train...

    I wish that we would listen more to Motobu in practice. So many quote him and then go back to WKF and JKA sparring, practicing 10+ Katas, and silly kata competition, which turns kata into interpretive dance. MMA, Daido, and the like gave the karate world tools to fight effectively, yet the people who run karate as an institution do not use them. The type of sparring currently practiced is not really karate sparring. It is savate sparring from the 1800s. Savate itself evolved into legitimate kickboxing, while karate sparring evolved into a hodgepodge of arbitrary, confusing rules that are counterproductive to student growth. With karate's inclusion into the Olympics, the problem has only gotten worse. The Olympic Committee has not met a martial art that it could not ruin. If karate dies, the blame falls on those who refuse to change their ways.

    Your student threw some sharp punches in the first bout, I swear I could feel them through the screen. The second one was total domination even before the armbar, an extremely satisfying display of skills. Thank you for posting, it reminded me I was going to watch your videos on two-handed punch. The concept seems to be against everything I've been taught, which means I'm about to learn something completely new. Congratulations to both you and your student!

    Sensei, thanks for your video. In my experience, Naifuanchi is a Passepartout Kata, given the incredible amount of principles and information it contains, even in its different execution methods. The central axis, in order to fully understand it, is certainly the Bunkai, in the Omote - Ura and Honto modalities. The validity of the information and principles it contains is certainly relevant and must be sought in the more mature versions of the Kata; do these correspond to the older ones? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it depends on many factors, which is why it is important to do research and study a lot. Naifuanchi, like all Kata, works on the meridians of the human body, therefore Tuite and Kyusho (Dim Mak for the Chinese) are fundamental subjects to study if you want to understand the Kata well and this one in particular. Just like Qi Gong etc. For example in the first sequence, the right fist was formerly brought in high Hikite, almost in line with the right hand, because the Empi, in the Bunkai at the Omote level, is a Tuite technique that acts on the Conception Vessel, while at the Ura level of the Bunkai is still a du Tuite technique but this time carried on the opponent's arm, at the height of the Triple Heater (point 12).

    Hello sensei. I have a question : did you train in karate (the whole martial art) or are you just interested in learning about katas ? Are you only a kudoka or do you consider yourself to be also a karateka ? Thank you for your time.

    • @shinjiwatanabe8131
      @shinjiwatanabe8131 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the very good question (and sorry for very late reply). As I have mentioned several times on this channel, I believe that the understanding and training of weapons is very important for karate in its original form. I also practice with weapons, but very little. And I do not train for fighting with weapons. My interests are almost exclusively in "non-armed fighting," so in that sense, I cannot say that I practice karate as a whole. Therefore, I cannot define myself to be a karate-ka in the strictest sense of the word. However, if one were to apply this strict definition, there would be very few karate-ka in the modern world. Therefore, if we were to loosen the definition a little more and say, "If we limit ourself to bare-knuckle fighting, that is still karate. It's modern karate. If you think so, then I am a karate-ka. I joined Daido-Juku in 1983. At that time, Daido Juku was not called "Kudo" but "Kakuto Karate" (meaning "Combat Karate" in English). To me, kudo and (modern) karate are synonymous. So I identify myself as both a kudo-ka and a (modern) karate-ka. Does this answer your question?!

    I feel the same as you. Anyone who has had a handful of real fights can’t be deceived by unrealistic theories and techniques that will not work in combat. Given the fact that Motobu’s preferred method of training was to regularly visit the red light district and pick fights with powerful looking opponents, he obviously gained a lot of real-world experience in the practical application of his art. It shines through in his writings, and I take everything he says to heart.

      There are still many karate masters who have never fought, or in other words, cannot fight. That is OK if we interpret karate as a traditional art. But if karate is a martial art, then it is important to actually fight. We must learn from the words of those who have actually fought.

    Watanabe Sensei, since you mentioned it, I find torite against modern martial arts pretty hard to utilize outside of a grappling interaction, or using striking as a way to disguise your grappling intention. The other way I think torite is useful and how kata can be interpreted is for guard manipulation. When you leave your punch out, it makes it easier for your opponent to hit you since you have left a "hole" in your defense. However the punch you leave out should remain active for guard manipulation, to rip their guard open for your own strike to enter. Meotode in that sense would be pulling the guard of your opponent open and using that same hand to strike. It isn't a powerful strike, but it is certainly enough to make your opponent more wary and allow you to enforce your own pressure. I find watching Archie Moore or older George Foreman boxing videos on guard manipulation very useful for this. Thanks for the video it's good things to think about when practicing naihanchi, osu

    I don't want to embarrass myself using western terminology here, but I got to say that the match against the Kyokushin practicioner was especially fascinating for me. In terms of distance and angle control, catching the kicks and capitalizing on the opponent's mistakes it was a pleasure to watch. Interestingly enough, Lida managed to blitz (walk down with punches while changing stances - please, excuse me using such terminology) his opponent - even though Kyokushin practicioners are supposed to excel in that aspect (I've sparred with them for a while when I was actively training, but my understanding still may be incorrect, I'm sorry if that's the case). Thank you for this, it's great to see, I am very impressed by your fitness at 61 sensei. Nice sparring, great respect and control shown by both sides.

    Awesome, just remember just getting there and moving around is awesome, think how many people could not even do that. So you both have Bushido in you.
