Nice scenery, Tim! I section hiked half of the Appalachian Trail, using a hammock, finishing in 2022. In 2023, I attempted a thruhike, falling and hurting my knee, over 1,000 miles in, ending that attempt. Other than two times sleeping in shelters because of high winds, and a dozen or so nights sleeping in hostel bunks, mostly due to a previous injury, I slept in my hammock, using a system that I had put together in 2008, but updated using ultralight equipment for my long (275 mile) section hikes in '21 and '22, and the thruhike attempt last year. I'm a side sleeper at home and usually started out that way in my hammock, sometimes waking up on my back. I don't use tents unless there is no place to hang a hammock. Having a tarp, which can be kept on the outside of a pack, gives you shelter for lunch in the rain during the day. It's a perk that's sometimes overlooked by hammock users. Oh, and never a muddy floor! 11:43 I think that bears eat that, too! All "signs" along the trail indicate it! Lastly, I can stand up under my tarp to change, if I pitch it high enough. I'd have to carry a 7 pound plus tent for that, or a $700.00 DCF pyramid.
