Stop Smoking, Climb a Mountain, Beat Myself in Checkers, and Talk About Pants | Big Bend
This video is weird and unique for a backpacking video. I jump all over the board from talking gear to discussing pants to quitting smoking, all while backpacking solo in Big Bend National Park.

    I have the same tent. I just used it today in the backyard. When I took it down, I realized there was no way in hell it was going back in the bag it came in. I stuck it on a shelf and I am searching the web for a stuff sack for it to fit in. Any suggestions on how big of stuff sack in liters?

      At the end of the day the best way for me was to just jam it in my pack without a stuff sack. If you're pulking it then maybe a 20 to 30 literally sack.

      @@BackpackingwithBuckleyI’ve been thinking about going to the guads for an overnight up to Guadalupe peak here sometime before it warms up too much. Stay at Guadalupe peak camp. It’s been maybe 5 years or so since I’ve gone up to the peak. Looking down into pine springs canyon is beautiful. The Guadalupe peak trail is a good hike. If anyone sees this and is thinking about doing it as a day hike, get on trail at the crack of dawn because that 8-9 mile round trip is no joke and it’ll pretty much turn into an all day event that’s why I prefer to get a campsite up there and it’s always more fun to go backpacking as opposed to day hiking imo

      @@BackpackingwithBuckleyno I didn’t look at any of the SR campsites. Every time I go up into the chisos I stay at pinnacles 3 for day 1. nice camp no deadfall and 3-4 really good tent spots with some trees around to block the wind. I prefer going up pinnacles then coming down laguna meadows because pinnacles camp is a shorter distance to get to when I arrive in the park mid afternoon

    Both great pack options 👌. Unfortunately, we fall into the ultra heavy back packing category, so either would be on the small side for us, our fault entirely!😂🙈. Great video👍

    I've lived here for more than a decade and this, I think, is probably my all time favorite video of the Big Bend with the bears, deer, roadrunner intermingled with fantastic scenery and random co-workers. Now I need to try the Mac and Cheese. I think it's the powdered cheese that is the culprit. It may need to be heated longer with a little more water. But I need to try it out (since now I have to with my unhealthy curiosity).

      Thanks Charlton! That's the best compliment I could possibly receive from a local. I'll happily suggest some much tastier options than that mac n cheese garbage.

    If I had any doubts about hammocking it, they disapparated, which most know, cannot be done within the walls of Hogwarts, while watching this wonderful video! I had no idea that hammock camping was so evolved from my younger years of a roughly woven tropical textile strung between two trees or beams in the backyard. (I had one that I purchased while living in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and brought back with me to the states.). Great video.

    You said Jason and KY. I know it Mr. Sir Jason. Would the hike perhaps be Indian Staircase? LOL. My first backpacking trip with friends was going up the staircase right at dusk with pack on. Talking about sketchy. Anyways, this looks like a beautiful area.

      @BackpackingwithBuckley 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha. Indian Staircase was one of the many spots Jason has taken me. Cloud Splitter was the one that really had a sketchy spot coming down. I'd follow Jason anywhere though.

      @@BackpackingwithBuckley gotcha, yea haven't done cloud splitter yet but he has told me. I would follow him anywhere in the backcountry. He is a 606 boy like me so I know he was born in backwoods and more than likely feral, lol!!!

    I use the center loop to attach my speaker to. But other than that I don't use the center loop most of the time. The pocket can fit 1.5L max where the larger backpacks can fit 2 1L.

    • @BackpackingwithBuckley
      @BackpackingwithBuckley 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good use of the loop! I need to get a little speaker one of these days but it would be heavy to carry a CD player and CDs. 😃😃

    Just picked up a 24/7 and building my UL set up now. Should be around 5 pounds for backpack, hammock, TQ and UQ, and tarp. Hoping to be below 15 pounds total. This year I'm focusing on miles and thru hiking. Really wanting to push my limits. Hilltop packs are just awesome quality totally customizable gear at a great price!!! Great video!!!

    • @BackpackingwithBuckley
      @BackpackingwithBuckley 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's sounds awesome. I think if I packed right, I could be at about the same weight. Being in the desert has made me carry all my water though so regardless of baseweight, I'm still heavy. 15 pounds TOTAL is about right for me personally if I don't have a hip belt.

    I'm hooked on my ULA CDT. Tough as nails. Needs a waterproof liner. Mine has about 1,500 miles on it, and I frequently overpacked it. It's finally showing some fraying of the thread at the top of my right shoulder strap. It's 3 years old. The newer ones are supposed to have better waterproofing and larger waist belt pockets, which was my only design gripe. Next AT thruhike attempt, possibly. 🤔

    • @BackpackingwithBuckley
      @BackpackingwithBuckley 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's getting your money's worth it would say! I still use some sort of dry bags or pack liners even with the waterproof packs. Better safe than sorry!
