my last backpacking meal purchase at Dollar General was i can of apple filling, can opener, bread and twizzlers. you can almost find a dollar general 10 min grom about any trail head nowadays.
Agreed. Unfortunate but true, they seem to have really taken over rural areas especially. Too damn convenient to avoid. Also...that bread, filling, and twizzler combo is an interesting variety. 🤣
I love DG! I love how they are everywhere! There actually isn't enough of them in SD. Two in every town, I always say! Weed out the old mom and pop stores. Lol.
Great ideas for low cost foods. Backpacking meal prices have skyrocketed. Doubled in the last few years. I really like the meatball idea with them being shelf stable. Do they taste good?
@@BackpackingwithBuckleysounds perfect. Especially for this warm weather. I may take them and make spaghetti and meatballs on my next trip. What could go wrong.
We have similar stores to dollar general here in the UK. Agreed, they aren't the most ethical corporations, but needs must! And the backpacking meals are getting crazy expensive!😮. Some great low cost options 😊👍
Ohh those meatballs and taco meat look awesome gotta get me some for my next backpacking trip …. Another thing I have bought there is a foldable Reflectix Windsheild Sun blocker for about $4…. Makes great pot and envelope meal coozies and also can be used under your inflatable mat to raise the R value in cold weather. Also good thermal layer under your sleeping bag for a sleeping cot if you are car camping and can be used in a pop up camper as temporary insulation on the canvas ends to keep out the cold 🥶 …. A myriad of uses really 🤷♂️ Thanks for the info looked like some good camping bargains there at your Dollar General 👍👍
Dollar stores are hit and miss for me. Somedays they have stuff and the next few days they don't. I do try and look for sales though. Thanks for the video brother
Dollar General pretty much supplied 90% of my food in the Grand Canyon and Canyonlands. Im surprised there wasnt a Dollar General at the bottom of the canyon... They seem to be everywhere.
Ughhh I’m having this emotional battle every couple days on my canoe trip from Iowa to New Orleans I did a resupply today at the ma and pa store in town and it was nearly double what my dollar general runs are
But how do the prices compare to Walmart or other stores? I've found that sometimes the dollar store is more expensive, and often times is more expensive per ounce. I've also found many deals at big lots, unsure how big that chain is.
@BackpackingwithBuckley I enjoy the joke pictures of dollar general being at the most random places like on the end of a dock on a lake but I do see them in smaller towns.
I go to the food pantries around here ,while wearing raggedy clothing and collect free cans of food for “my family “ at home, lol. Haven’t paid a dime for camp food.
I agree with what you said about the DG. I too buy a good amount of my backpacking food from there. Keep it up.
It's better in most cases compared to expensive meals. I probably won't carry three pounds of meatballs on our trip this fall though. Haha
Another great budget option is dehydrating your own food to make camping meals. And if you get lucky you can find a dehydrator at a garage sale.
Very true, unless you lack ambition to do so. Haha. I really should try it sometime.
@@BackpackingwithBuckley you can dehydrate meats in the oven, check it out.

Yeah....get those small business out of my town!

They are like a cross between Subway and Chef Boyardee. Really good. Salty.

They all look so good mate 👌

Greetings! Thanks for watching!

Yeah, 15 dollars a meal is getting pretty ridiculous!
I love their fruit strips made with Real fruit! Can't forget Jolly Ranchers, my favorite. I'll have to try the pure kick drink mix.
I've never tried the fruit strips. I'll have to give them a go!

Nice. The meatballs are a staple for me these days. Tasty!
Some nice options
For sure!
Them HighRollers purchase their backpacking meals from REI, us dirtbaggers gets our grub from Dollar General!👍
Even when I do splurge on fancy meals I'm often disappointed anyway. I never get upset when I have a bag of meatballs! Lol
I know it's more of a southern thing but I love to pair instant cheese grits with meat sticks mmm
Sounds sort of tasty? Lol
I love taking cheese grits with extra cheese!

It's always disappointing to me when they don't have what I went there for. I know what you mean, Mark.

Well stated dude. They are EVERYWHERE.
I've got to try Kick and the vanilla creamer trick. Other than that I've used almost every one of these lol
The creamer was truly an experiment. Two of them work great for me. I'm picky about this stuff too.
I'm surprised you haven't had more views on this one.
It will pick up eventually (my prediction).
Yep, DG can help with getting cheap food that isn't exactly the most healthy. Good video
Thanks Tressa!! I know there aren't many healthy options but I eat a lot of garbage food on trail. Lol
There use to be a healthy for you section that had awesome dehydrated fruits-they have since gotten rid of that section!😢
I wish that was still a thing too. Aldi has great dehydrated food.
Yep! They loaded up on the processed crap! I have also found somewhat healthy items at aldi.
@@BackpackingwithBuckleyis there an Aldi around here?
Dude I was waiting for some Pure Kick content hahahah
I missed the opportunity man!!
I've been hitting up the Dollar Tree stores for the same kind of products. I can say they do not carry the meatballs.
The meatballs are usually around 4 bucks.

@gymhouston5734 Can't win em all bud! 😀
Dollar General: unofficial supplier of food for the Appalachian Trail thruhiker.
At least last year.
I would imagine this to be absolutely true Daniel!
But how do the prices compare to Walmart or other stores? I've found that sometimes the dollar store is more expensive, and often times is more expensive per ounce. I've also found many deals at big lots, unsure how big that chain is.
The prices are hit and miss compared to Walmart. Dollar General in my case is much closer. For folks in remote areas I think DG is more accessible.
