Devil The One Would Have Him #folk #folksong #ballads
God knows he tried his best and went out with them all, yet 'Devil The One Would Have Him'. He must have been fierce fussy or were the weemin all jist too hard to plaze! Hiberno-English can get a person into all sorts of trouble or did he just want to go to the Lisdoonvarna matchmaking festival! Enjoy this campfire style version of 'Divil The Wan Wud Ave Him'.
1st Part
He was livin’ on his own - since his Ma and Da passed on,
Just him an’ Shep beside the fire - ach now the nights were long.
His Da tould him to get a wumman - an that he shouldn’t live alone,
For it’s bloody hard drenchin' cow's - when yer working on yer own.
A dacent, strappin’ lassie - with lots o’ charm an’ grace,
Who could mebbie drive a tractor - an’ help out round the place.
He'd went with dozens in his time - ach God knows he tried his best,
But divil the wan wud have him - from the first one till the last.
2nd Part
The first one that he went with - was wee Bridget McAloon,
She wanted flowers & romance - jist like they have in Mills an’ Boon
Now he didn’t have a motor then - so he really had no chance,
For his Massey tractor thirty five - was'nt great for romance.
He'd hose it down before each date - and clean off all the shit,
An put a raul a’ hay in the linkbox - as a place for her to sit.
But he lost her to a Fancy Dan - who thought himself some man,
With his Elvis Presley haircut - and his Morris Minor van.
3rd Part
The next one she wuz different - from a solid farming breed,
When he seen the wellie marks - he knowed she was what he'd need,
Her figure would break the sweat - on any farmer’s brow,
A 10-pound hammer of a fist - and an arse like a Charolais cow!
She asked him home to meet her da - he thought, “I'm in like Flynn”,
But the oul’ hoor only wanted - help to fill his grant form in!
She could milk and drive a tractor - as well as any man,
But she choose to marry a oul' lad - with a bigger farm o’ lan’.
4th Part
Then there wuz Elizabeth - she wuz always on the go,
It wuz run her here and take her there - or let’s go to a show.
Dancin’ till the wee small hours - an her dressed up in fancy duds,
T'was then the bags below his eyes - cudda held a creel o’ spuds!
Every night that they went out - they'd end up havin’ rows,
‘Cos he have trouble getting’ home - in time to milk the cows!
She thought him awful boring - and tied down till the land,
So he got the push when she tuk up - with a drummer in a band.
5th Part
The next one she wuz liberated - just to watch her wuz a treat,
She’d a chest like a pair a’ wee lads - fightin’ under a sheet!
She tried to educate him - to see the world beyond his work,
Sayin', there's more to life than slurry - or how to smuggle pork!
She gave him plays, an’ symphonies - and books as thick as thon,
By Russian blokes with names - that he'd twist his tonsils on!
When she mentioned Dostoyevski - 'twas the biggest mistake he made,
When he axed, “Wuz it him that useta - play for Partizan Belgrade”?
6th Part
There was the one he wrote to - from the ad in the ‘Farming Year’,
A single R.C. Female - seeks man with a big ‘John Deere’
She showed him round the place she had - way down beyont Kildare,
With 300 acres on one side of the road - and 200 more ore' there!’
Sez she, “To plough a furrow up that field - can take 2 hours to do”
Sez he, “he knew jist what she ment - he'd a tractor like that too!”
She said, they were incompatible - and of a totally different ilk,
For she was mainly arable - and he was pigs and milk.

The Day Big Margit Marriet (Married) #folksong #folk #folkmusic

Sounds like they were all on their best behaviour at Big Margit's wedding spree in south central Ulster! I'm surprised that the local padre had not made an appearance to help with guidance and blessings so as to be adding a verse to the proceedings. Enjoy this campfire style version of 'The Day Big Margit Marriet'. Great community spirit. 1st Verse They sent out invitations - to a weddin party ...

This aul Sliabh Beagh romantic is I believe known to have celebrated his 84th birthday at a disco in Ibiza and in later years he hung out at raves in Monaghan town. A local newspaper claimed he would go to raves to beat the grave and indeed he lived to the grand old age of 99. However, some think the main reason was that he was out there looking for a wife. He certainly was not letting the 'Sof...

His Da married twice the second time 'round to a lady from Sliabh Beagh whom he thought was very thin. His wildly romantic son never married but in fairness to him he indicated that 'he knowed two, he thought would do' but still he had his fears! Sometimes the best laid plans of men do not work out. Enjoy this campfire style version of 'He and His Da'. Ist Verse He was livin’ in Drumlister - an...

The first ever 'Irish Wake Festival' took place recently in Mullranny, Co Mayo, I thought it gave me an excuse to finish off the festival with 'The Daler's Wake'. It's about a fellow named Bob the likes of whom everybody knows some one like him! He was a decent fellow and prepared in advance for his wake, making sure for all who were there, 'that there was food and drink to spare' and as we are...

As the first ever 'Irish Wake Festival' gets on the way on the 18th May 2024 in Mullranny, Co Mayo, I thought I might get in on the act with a wake story. It seems that when this story was first told that some of the listeners fell asleep. Who knows but maybe some of them had nightmares. I think these are the very words that I wispered to Mary Donovan while sitting under a Shepherds Bush in London way back in the late 80's! I got the idea from the time that my mother used to send me out to collect May flowers for May day but instead I was keeping an eye out for Fairy Queen's. So I guess I must have learned something from the Fairy Kings that I then spotted in Sliabh Beagh - and...

St. Patrick was the man for driving out snakes and the Pied Piper wistled for the rats. I'm a devil for true facts! I wonder is this the area where the idea of Romantic Ireland commenced! The Treanors of Truagh attribute the father of their family line to be the famed MacCartan who St. Patrick granted a diocese, to keep him from moaning about the O'Flynn's of Hy-Tuirtre, North of the river Blackwater whom he had granted seven churches. St. Bridget was MacCartan's niece so I'm not sure what relation that make...

1st Verse If you minded every minute - of your life you couldna think, all you'd min is bits and bobs - while at times it's just a blank. There's stuff that's kin a haesy - and other bits that's clear, but here's a tale that stayed with him - for nearly 50 years. McClement toul this wee story - coming back from some aul' night they were all jammed in the motor - squashed together brave an tight For incar entertainment - well the hater it only cracked an he cud mind the story - jist as clear again when he lucked back.

2nd Verse Clement's turn came 'round again - to spin a tale an yarn or two sez he, you'll not believe it - but this tale I tell is true. Of all the jobs he ever did - there was one he couldn't houle when he prenticed as an undertaker - to a man named Hugh Madole. Thon first days a undertaking - was the last he ever done it was of a farmer in the mountain - awy, by the name of Johnny Dunn. A poor neighbor man had foun him ded in bed - in notin' but his socks an the poor creature sent for Hugh - to put his boddy in a box. 3rd Verse He'd lived way up a lonely holla - him there all his workin life too busy lamin yeoz and such - awy, to get his sel a wife. Thon body had a tarrable hump - awy, and it crooked in every limb an it wouldna fit intae the box - that Madole had brought for him. His house was weenin' a hut in size - the stairs were steep and thin but they got thon coghin' up the stairs - and tried to jam him in. But wen his face went down his feet - they'ed rise up down the end and like when his feet went down - then his head would rise again.

4th Verse They tried it every road they could - an there heads was near astray so they dressed him an they pressed him - an moved him to the stair. Well they staggered down the stairs okay - and led him roun the foot an movin roun a right tight turn - his boddy - dam near well fell ot. Wel they didn't stare but some neighbors there - put a sort awake on an Madole he took a hammer - an nailed his clows to kep him ketched Then he took a beer right handy - from druth his trattle needed wet. wit one thing an another - with them bottles, they had a couple mare an a bite te ate, for thon aul' boy - had really rocked their nerve. 5th Verse Then al the neighbors waked him well - with sandwiches an drink an soon ye coudnae hear yer sel - with the chat as bottles clinked. Wit wise aul yarns an bits a crack - some eyes were gay and glazed then thro the dure came Fr. Murray - an they cud see he wasnaw plased. Sez he, agh God, uze are sitting - drinking an ateing here me soul an poor aul' Johnny Dunn, him lyin' there - his body hardly kaul'. Yez mocked him hard in life as well - an laughed behin his bak and his crookedness yous - made into a target for your crack.

6th Verse Ye called him humpy dumpy - with an all out humpy head an now ye sit an yarn an drink - like as if he knows no heed. Jost look at your hypocrisy - which makes me boddy wanta' boke he only hoped they mine te times - they made aul Johnny Dunn a joke. A kindly word or a helpin' han - was missin' when he lived an he doubted this would be the way - that he wanted to be grieved. A lot a while will separate - to clane the rotten in your hearts as yiz gathered up the neighbors - an this boon of cheeky blurts. 7th Verse It isn't only right for ye te sit - and yarn with drink an ate with poor aul' Johnny restin' in his box - an aff to meet his fate. But then an odd thing happened - as they heard a tearing clowth as those wee nails that trapped his clows - had lousned in the box. He raised up through the coghin' - and again we though he'd grown for he seemed to struggle forrid - an then let oot an awful moan. Madole was the only man in there - ach ayw, who kept a level head it's jist trapped gas, he said - an it happens when you're dead.

8th Verse But every other body there - raced oot the dure and ran for it and the screaming an the yellin - cud be heard way out a good bit. Well when Fr. Murray went to run - he couldnaw reach the dure for his coat had got a clickened - to a nail stuck in the fleur. There was a lot of scoul and lashin' - as he tried to get it loose as he tried to pull an free his sel - to get outside the hoose. He must have thought aul' Dunn - was howlin' him brave and tight but as a very reverent gentleman - he was putting up a fight. 9th Verse Would Johnny drag him tay the grave - or take him down to hell? aul reverend Murray raulled his eyes - an let oot a powerful yell. Let go af me ye clart - ye dirty, smelly, humpy, heathen hur an with that he made a struggle - as he tried to reach the dure. Sez he, release me now aul humpie - you crooket, twisted blurt an wit that aul' Fr. Murray thought - his crys had nerly worked. You dirty clart and humpie devil - may your fate be down below and that you find yer sel forever - in a place that's all a glow.

  • @backbeatpat
    @backbeatpat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

10th Verse With that the reverend did erupt - an he got busted oot and loose and never stopped his running - till in home at his own wee hoose. Well, when all the folk had vanished - Madole he took great care as they tied aul Johnny in the box again - an took him to the car. The herse was parked in Johnny's yard - they loaded him still bent and took him to the church yard - and left him there and went. He quit Madole's, McClement said, - an he never heard again of aul Fr. Murray, Johnny Dunn - or the wee hoose up the glen. Outry That was the tale he toult - of Madole, aul' Johnny Dunn and he an he thought an undertaking job for him - just wasn't meant to be. When McClement finished talking - not another word was heard for some of them were fast asleep - and the rest were sort a feard. It's been a lot of years since then - but it seems like yesterday and he mined it just as clearly - till they put him in the clay.

The fact that Pat is planning to use solar power to provide the energy required to operate it is so environmentally friendly. This will be a fabulous when it begins to operate as a tourist train in Cork City. Very empressed.
