  • Ballad and folk. The 6th January the 'Feast of the Epifiny' or 'Old Christmas Day' 1839 was the night of the 'Big Wind' in Sliabh Beagh. It was so bad that water was blown from the lakes resulting in fish being found in the fields afterwards. Indeed also, when the old aged pension was being introduced in 1909 anyone remembering the 'Big Wind' qualified for it! Well the night of the 'Big Flood' has nothing to do with that but do enjoy this campfire style version of the 'The Flood Of Twenty Nine'. Probably some fish in the fields after that event too!
    1st Verse
The 6th of October - in the year twenty nine
Is well remembered - round Erin's green Isle.
The county of Monaghan - suffered great loss
From the floods that came - and the bridges they tossed.
Out around Knockatallon - and at Duffy's Mill
All the low-lying houses - and the shops were filled.
As the flood it moved on - towards aul' Ballinode
Some did leave their homes - and took to the road.
    2nd Verse
It was a Saturday night - that the rains came down
And many were stranded - below in the town.
The McCarron's and Hanley's - and aul' Biddy McQuaid
Were welcomed by neighbours - till arrangements were made.
The owner of the mill - arose in the middle of the night
That man from Drum-lara - was named Robert Wright.
In Doogary, Tydavnet - they were late for Mass
The footbridge at Ag-ha-gallia - sure they could'nt pass.
    3rd Verse
Eoghan Treanor of the hollow - on the Monday prepared
A cart load of pigs - for Monaghan Fair.
With the floods at Drum-benagh - he had to turn round
And the long road he took - all the way through Milltown.
So now to conclude - and finish this song
That day is remembered - for ever so long.
And again we give thanks - to the great God above
For saving their lives - those they cherished and loved.
