  • Ballad and folk. In South central Ulster Monaghan is positioned between Lough Erne to the west and the Mourne Mountains to the east. As the last ice age was retreating it left a landscape of little hills. These are more commonly known as drumlins and as the ice said its last farewell it left in its wake a little mountain now known as Sliabh Beagh. The 'Ballad of Monaghan' captures its geographical uniqueness and how its inhabitants revel at its wonder. Enjoy this campfire style version of the 'Ballad of Monaghan'.
    1st Verse
    Monaghan's a mother of a - thousand moulded hills,
Set about little rivers - chained to many little mills.
Rich and very pastured - Monaghan mild her meadows lie,
Melting to the distant mountains - in the mirrored sky.
    2nd Verse
Lovely, low-lying Monaghan - sitting on her little lakes
Float and tremble lordly lillies - hoed by little fairey rakes.
Silvered o’er with sunshine - and by night with shimmering fog,
Where the sloping cornland - meets the beauteous fields of bog.
    3rd Verse
Humbly hid by heath and lichen - awaits a turf land of old,
While the hasty bees go hiding - honey thro’ their moulds.
Thro’ and thro’ them rushes - runs many a thousand rills,
Lisping long forgotten - songs of Ireland’s ills.
    Outro
Yeah.... Monaghan's a mother of a - thousand moulded hills,
Set about little rivers - chained to many little mills.
Wearing a mingled chaplet - with oak an beech she doth bind,
Making her green in summer - and in winter, musical with wind.
Yeah... that's Monaghan, the mother of a thousand little hills.
