  • I wonder is this the area where the idea of Romantic Ireland commenced! The Treanors of Truagh attribute the father of their family line to be the famed MacCartan who St. Patrick granted a diocese, to keep him from moaning about the O'Flynn's of Hy-Tuirtre, North of the river Blackwater whom he had granted seven churches. St. Bridget was MacCartan's niece so I'm not sure what relation that makes her of the Treanors. Also, I was not aware that McCartan had seven daughters but I think the seven sons of the Ard-Rígh of Tara did know about the lassies. Enjoy this campfire style version of the 'Clans of Truagh' which tells us about seven weddings that took place after a hunt.
    1st Verse
The Treanors are an ancient clan - that long have been in Truagh
That part of ancient Oriel - renowned for peace and truth.
At the Altar much devoted - they loved both God and man.
Yeah..... and widely noted - as Truagh's old Le-vit-ical clan.
In their green woods serene - they lived a calm acadian life
And there within a sylvan screen - remote from fear and strife.
The famed chief of their clan - was loved by many subjects true
In sorrow and distress approved - that fatherly head of Truagh.
    2nd Verse
Surrounded by his daughters seven - the chief felt truely blest
His fort a little piece of Heaven - where friendly angels rest.
They spun wool and silken flax - and made vestments for the priests
No time the sisters found to lax - and had little for to feast.
While a sewing on an afternoon - there upon their verdant lawn
Heard the cry of distant hounds - then came up a panting fawn
It bounded o'er the holly hedge - and collapsed upon the grass
So still and thorny round the edge - that the hounds they could'nt pass
    3rd Verse
Seven stalwart youths with retinue - came a riding on the scene
A lovely sight came into view - with seven ladies on the green.
They made a bow with princely grace - and begged to be excused
Then came the chief - who found the place - a little bit confused.
"Sez's he:- I'm the chief here of the clan - welcome to my home
There's rest and food for man and all - for seldom strangers come.
Amongst my folk you may remain - and chase our choicest game
Before you leave for home again - pray say - from where you came."
    4th Verse
Most generous chief with grateful heart - we heard all of what you spoke
With us astray in these strange parts - our emotions deep awoke
Meath men are we from Tara's plain - chief fort of the Ard-Rígh
McKenna is our clan and name - our credientials you will see."
A week they spent in Truagh content - and then went back to Meath
The chief was pleased to give concent - for many other meets.
All seven wed - it came to pass - them Treanors and McKennas
Families large, traditions say - them the 1st of Truaghs McKennas
    5th Verse
McKenna's soon the dominant race - hard duties did not shirk
They are found in foremost places - when danger clouds are dark
Two grand old clans - long allied - in wedlock and lifes task
The aliens yoke till death defied - they spurned a traitors mask
Around the world their name is found - with fame at its command
And God's love and truth they do expound - in every mission land
The clans of Treanor and McKenna - have made many a noble team
May they flourish and continue - in virtue and esteem.
