  • St. Patrick was the man for driving out snakes and the Pied Piper wistled for the rats. I'm a devil for true facts! Global warming led to it being fierce wet time and in the floods Noah's Ark got stumped on Sliabh Beagh.
He brought many new genres of music and the Hibernians were boppin' to the new beats. Brian Buru's lads and lassies were having a ball with 'The Aul' Irish Jig' before they jiggered the Vikings out into the ocean! Enjoy this campfire style version that came from the Roslea area. 1st Verse
May blessings be on you aul' Erin,
My homeland of frolic and fun.
For all sorts of mar-thon diversions,
The likes is'nt under the sun.
Bohemians may boast of their polkas,
Spain of their walzes talk big.
Agh... sure they're nothin' but limpin'
When compared to the aul' Irish jig.
    Chorus
It's a fig - for the new fashion walzes,
Imported from Spain - and from France.
And a fig - for the thing called the polka,
We'll teach them - our own Irish dance.
    2nd Verse
I have heard how the jig came in fashion,
    Believing the story is true.
T'was invented by Adam and Eve,
The reason that partners were few.
Although they could both dance a polka,
Eve thought it was much out of date.
She prefered the aul' jig to be danced to,
And faith to I approve of her taste.
    3rd Verse
And oft' in the glens and green meadows,
The jig was danced with such grace.
That even the daisies they throad on,
Looked up with delight on their face.
And oft' in the Great Hall of Tara,
    That famous King Brian Buru.
Did dance the aul' jig with his nobles,
And played the aul' harp till it too.
    4th Verse
    And when that odious daughter,
Was a dancing at King Herods side.
His harp that had been frozen for years,
Was thawed with much love and delight.
And more than a hundred times over,
I've heard the aul' Clergy thus tell.
T'was the aul' Irish jig that she footed,
That pleased the aul' villan so well.
