  • Ballad and folk. Our old school closed about 1968 as it was in danger of producing too many high achievers! Then I saw a school photo from 1927 with my father and John McMahon in it - both born about 1918/19. They were great men and I think after they finished school that John emigrated to the bright lights of Scotstown and never came back. Then I saw a dedication to John by the Scotstown and Ballinode Hunt Club so I thought I'd have a go at picking it. Enjoy this campfire style version of this new ballad. John came from a great part of the country and now we know why he never came back!
    1st Verse
Come listen now while I relate - the virtues of a man
From Scotstown in North Monaghan - a good aul' sporting fan.
Who passed away in ninety five - in the first week of the year,
And left a griving widow - and a family oh so dear.
His three score years and ten - all attained plus seven more
Brave John he left behind - a legacy and a store.
Many achievements big and samll - can be recalled with pride,
Now beneath the sod he's gone - oh how his people cried.
    2nd Verse
His prowess at the game of cards - his interest in the hunt,
His liking for the Gaelic games - was always to the front.
With those country pastimes - he embraced traditions handed down
Will be passed on hopefully - in his beloved Scotstown.
A gentleman in word and deed - of help to neighbours all
With witty tales and sound advice - in future they'll recall.
In business life he played it staright - buildin' up the goodwill
That was retained hence forward - and confidence it did instill.
    3rd Verse
An old established famous name - well known in history
His Christian life well known - was obvious all to see.
Among his neighbours well esteened - the a rural life he led
From his country life pastimes - on which traditions fed.
With seven and seventy years - he had a good long life
Survived by sons and daughters - and also a good wife.
Now as he rests in peace - and the day of judgement's nigh,
No more they'll weep - nor no more lament or cry.
Yeah.. from Scotstown, North Monaghan, a good aul' sporting fan.
