Henry: A Portrait of a Serial Killer (1985) At Those Movies
Here's a slasher movie that both Siskel and Ebert thumbsed but it couldn't get released! Stuff seems tame compared to today to be honest with ya. To be even more honest I'd recommend this movie but I think you'd enjoy the more realistic and fun "Confessions of a Serial Killer" over HAPSK. Heck, why not make it a double feature?

Ghost(1990) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 14410 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just think, back in 1990 this movie out grossed Total Recall, Home Alone, Pretty Woman, and Dancing with Wolverines. Early sign of the upcoming apocalypse? Our fave scribes Ebert and Siskel were at odds at how come Molly(Demi) absolutely refuses to believe her ex-bf is a ghost! Um, maybe Molly(Demi) is smarter than she looks? ngl I just wondered why she sports a man's haircut and loose fitting ...

Anybody remember this flick from late summer 1991? Along with Mickey Rourke and Dons Johnson this vehicle had up and coming stars like Daniel Baldwin, Tia Carrere, Kelly Hu, along with pre drug crazed Tom Sizemore. To our surprise Siskel and Ebert are at odds about this movie..so much at odds they end up fighting over whether a leather chair was a leather chair or a metal counsel, whatever coun...

Amazingly enough, this is a TV movie, shown on HBO instead of a movie theater. Great enough to win an Emmy, Great enough to be reviewed by Siskel & Ebert. You might find this a timely movie as the plot involved taking a public company private. Elon Musk much?

Here's a higher quality version of this historical movie review. Ebert actually convinces/tricks Siskel into changing his upward thumb downward. Note Siskel at 2:25 catches himself saying "it doesn't work", he knew he was busted. Also, if you look closely you'll see an edit that really enhances this review. Maybe the show's ratings were suffering a little and they decided to spice things up a b...
A Brief History of Time (1992) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 7642 ปีที่แล้ว
This Errol Morris documentary attempts to discover what makes renowned physicist Stephen Hawking tick. Hawking then tries to explain how your watch would tick if you fell into a black hole. Siskel & Ebert are split over whether to recommend this film. However, they both agree Morris should have delved a little deeper into the singular(haha) mind of Stephen Hawking. With a run time of 80 minutes...

Director Edward James Olmos directs and stars in this movie about the origins of the Mexican Mafia in the California prison system. This movie caused a lot of outrage from the Mexican Mafia, as they felt the homosexual rape scenes were way out of line. Several of the consultants reportedly were murdered after this movies release. I gotta admit Olmos dug deep into many issues within the Latino c...
The Hunt for Red October (1990) At Those Movies

This movie was so good that both Siskel & Ebert give a emphatic thumbs up. Ebert liked that the plotline was much clearer than Clancy's book(I wholeheartedly agree). Siskel liked how the intelligence community played their cat and mouse games, along with Alec Baldwin's(back when he wasn't a a complete lunatic) standout performance. Audiences certainly agreed this was worth watching, this was th...
The Principal (1987)
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This 1987 blast from the past features Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr.(barely). Belushi takes on the unenviable role as a principal trying to clean up a drug infested High School. You know it's the 80's when you see Junior from Platoon in a small role as one of the gang members. Naturlich, Siskel and Ebert give opposing thumbs with Ebert buying into Belushi's role, in principal.. and Siskel t...
Siskel & Ebert Reservoir Dogs (1992) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 3.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Incredibly BOTH Siskel & Ebert take turns wildly swinging at Reservoir Dogs until it ends up beat to a pulp, much like Butch's opponents in the ring so long ago. I'll correct their error in judgement. Reservior Dogs is Quentin Tarantino's first movie, it was a very big success. The acting and dialogoue are outstanding. Add to the fact this movie has numerous iconic scenes gives this movie 4 Sta...

This might be where Hollywood took a really close look at Paul Verhoeven. Gene and Roger really liked this film with it's combination of ultra-violence and comedic timing. It's impossible to find a way to get offended by this flick, although I bet some people nowadays will somehow find a way. Anyone know how Verhoeven's movies looked so colorful, crisp, and clear?
Siskel & Ebert Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 19K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Is this the best Star Wars movie ever? Both Siskel and Ebert praise how well Empire Strikes Back weaves new worlds, creatures and their "awe inspiring" sights into one of film history's ultimate Sci-Fi Adventures. What a great time this was at the Midland theater in downtown Kansas City the first week of release back in May, 1980.
Siskel & Ebert Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I think this review shows how being a movie critic can be problematic. Here Gene gives a thumbs down because he the plot is too predictable and he says the main characters(Martin/Caine) don't interact very well. I mean, comeon these guys are a riot there's enough laughs to makeup for the lack of laughs in another comedy that came out around this time, Scrooged. At least Roger looked past the fe...
Siskel & Ebert Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This was the 2nd highest grossing movie of 1993, only losing out to Jurassic Park by 500 million or so. Gene bought Robin Williams under all that makeup, while Roger absolutely did not. One of those rare super hits that never got a sequel I'll take this over Tootsie any day.
Siskel & Ebert Double Impact (1991) At Those Movies
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey, you get TWO JCVD for the price of one! There's a lot to like with this flick and it was a money maker at the heights of Van Damme's power in 91. Gene and Roger have some nice things to say but they wanted more humor. I think I saw this in Biloxi but maybe that was Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Still waiting for Double Impact 2 time's a wastin'.

I thought it was a fantastic film.
It seems Ebert wants perfection, else give a thumbs down.
I have always considered it so much more than a movie. There is something spiritual and Godly weaving within the celluloid. Totally unforgettable.
Siskel is so right in his response to Ebert here: the movie's not about Ralph Macchio's character, you Penguin-looking overstuffed potato! I generally like Ebert's contrarian take on things, but this just seems like he's straining to find a reason to not give it a thumbs up.
Who could imagine the star of Joe Eszterhas would rot so fastly?
You could say the same thing about Snow Day: Hal at any point in that movie could have said: "Yeah, Claire's hot, but my cute redheaded best friend totally has the hots for me. Maybe I should just spend the day with her."
Nevertheless
Saw this when Animal Planet aired it in the late 1990s.
Suspense. What an idiot. RIP It’s a comedy. Very very very funny movie.
Ebert was really reaching with his criticisms as if he thought his film snob credentials would be revoked if he condescended to like a low-brow comedy.
Never quite trust Gene on comedies. Ebert is a better comedy critic. But, Gene is better at rating dramas. Thumbs up to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Funny flick.
This is not a Latino boys n the hood 😂😂
It is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen , but it is a Brilliant film, unlike those torture films like Wolf Creek - I am still stunned how people can say Friday the 13th films and compare those films to Henry because those films are made to just give more gore for it's own sake
Exactly
I watched this so many times on VHS back as a teen in the 80s. What's wrong with these guys? I just got the Blu Ray today put out by Kino Lorber. Makes you wonder what they thought of Light of Day. I watched that here in the theaters in Cleveland.
The egg...as symbolic of the soul. ..
Everyone wants to trash that film, but I think it's important to have films like this exist. If you want to understand villainy and the roots of evil, then you must see them in full form. A clockwork orange would not have worked if the main character had some redeeming qualities. Let us see evil for what it is. I liked the Bad Lieutenant and I'm glad I saw it.
Nah. At the end he redeems himself by letting the kids go. He forgives them like the nun did. Some Catholic thing I barely understand. I guess he could have wasted them and that would be justice too, but his soul was lost before the film started so it's something. Alex Delarge doesn't really change, so you're right there for Clockwork.
Liam Neeson got the part because he was good at making lists 😮
I agree with Ebert 100%
Not the best movie but the scene with Sydney Pollock as a Dr. was better than most films at the time.
YOUTS 4 LIFE!
Good enough movie to watch once, but not worth a repeat. The lead characters are over the top and only marginally like-able. Marginal thumbs up.
So violent this got an X rating MGM was like NO R
I forgive Siskel cuz he was sick and a snob but a good guy ebert on the other hand remains the best movie critic we habe ever had and though I hardly agree w some of his stuff he's the best Now it's kermode as the best
What are the absolute great dialogue movies of all time the acting is top tier
I HATED Dead Again. Shut up, Roger.
Amazing movie
I never listen to critics.... they don't speak for all of us
Anyone who would give My Cousin Vinny a thumbs down has no taste in movies.
Ebert sucks. Like Siskel said, it was a great movie for all the reasons he mentions
I gotta take a dump
Huh?
@@camaradiop3731 I took a huge Oprah-sized dump
Nahhh didn't like this movie much myself Fox is always a hoot but this was just average cant believe it was a bigger hit than Back to the future
Siskel and Ebert were actors. Everything on the mainstream media is carefully planned. It's not like this was filmed live lol
This is why you never listen to CRITICS.
Just watched it for the first time, and I really enjoyed it. Disagree with Gene. And I’m disappointed that neither give any credit to Glenne Headly, who I thought was brilliant in this.
Roger Ebert always got it wrong
I saw this film when I was 18 ,it was Extraordinary and Masterful. One of the Best movie I've ever seen.
Robocop has heavy duty violence. Come on, Gene!
Robocop was badly cut to obtain the R rating.
Robin did a Bond impersonation whilst Brosnan later become 007!
1:36 😂
Roger had the same effect whilst watching Dumb and Dumber
The other film they implied briefly was Date with an Angel
This was badly edited by the MPAA especially the sex scene whereas the blood that is leaking on the ceiling and lands on the nude couple
Siskel is hard
The 1st and the 2nd film were horror masterpieces
The slasher ruined it for me.
Yes, most critics sneered at it.
I miss these guys
Ebert is in my opinion, the greatest film critic of all time.. He's allowed to wrong occasionally, which he was here. My Cousin Vinny is a phenomenal film.
Ebert completely missed the mark on this one. It wasnt about the case, the movie focused exacrly where it should have on Vinney and Mona Lisa. Ralph was a supporting actor.
