Siskel & Ebert White Men Can't Jump (1992) At Those Movies

  • Thankfully Siskel & Ebert really liked this film. If not, their reputation would definitely take a hit. Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson at their peak, both playing perfect man-childs. I don't think there's an important plot in this movie, just a blast from start to finish. Way back in 92, this was THE movie to see for anyone in their 20's.

Im glad they mentioned them insulting each other. The shit-talking in this movie is almost unparalleled and is really what brings me back to rewatch this movie. So damn funny

That's one of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films and I love it a lot, too. The chemistry between Rosey Wesley and Woody is sublime.

I rented this one on VHS back in the day. This was Woody Harrelson's first lead role. The movie's success was perfectly timed for him, coming a year before Cheers ended. It launched a tremendous and unlikely movie career for someone who played the kind of silly sidekick role on TV that has never led to a major film career for anyone else. Director Ron Shelton built his career around the narrow genre of sports comedies. This, Bull Durham and Tin Cup were his hits. He had a number of misses until finally Hollywood Homicide effectively killed his career at the same time it severely damaged Harrison Ford's.

I think this movie is a great example of what's missing in today's movie world. Back in 92 you'd get off work, call your friend and without knowing anything about the movie, except for maybe a commercial spot, you'd go see it before even watching the Siskel & Ebert review. I saw this in south Miami around the same time My Cousin Vinny came out so wow in March 92 two great movies came out and it wasn't the Xmas or Summer blockbuster season. Nowadays, NOTHING like this ever seems to happen anymore.

@@erichaynes7502 To have that sense of spontaneity in going to see a movie you need something that's less publicized. So it can't be a sequel or a highly promoted big-budget movie. Comedies seem to be a particular weak spot in movies now and those are the ones that would usually come out and surprise you. Knives Out is probably a good recent example of this kind of smaller movie that can come out and look good enough to go see without researching it. 40-year-old Virgin was another sleeper hit some years ago. Maybe Hangover, Horrible Bosses and Ted. Some of the horror movies like Happy Death Day, Get Out, A Quiet Place have been like that.

Yes a lot of people would call it a sports comedy but it did have the 2 guys relationships as a big part of the story.
