Fishing Johnshaven Harbour : Trying something different : North East Scotland Sea Fishing.
Using light gear I targeted the small Coley, Rockling, Wrasse and Scorpion fish that live in the harbours. More sea fishing th-cam.com/play/PLUx1B0hBA-o2nXbfQ_qgbu7s93B6Pec4W.html&si=U0qMSR3EvmkHqVtG
I love these little fishing harbours all along the Scottish coastline. Jonhshaven is an important harbour for the local Lobster fishing. Using special creels the fishermen catch and land the Lobster and Brown Crab (Partan) which are processed and sold at the facility on the harbour side. Dangerous hard work for these folks.
My fishing was quite up to what I'd hoped but unless you get out there and give it a try you'll never know what's waiting for your bait. The small coley are called Buddiks. I'm sure there will be Conger in the harbour so I'll be back to try again.
Hope you enjoy this video as much as Dee (Channel fishing dog) and I did.
Tight lines from me and a Tail Wag from Dee.

    How much money do you reckon you have spent on your boat since you bought it? I have bought an Orkney 440, mint condition, new 20hp Honda 4 stroke engine (4months old). New cables, new wiring, fish finder, fm radio, lights, trailer just serviced, everything! I paid 7500, not being nosey, I just want to compare. It’s a 2008 boat, just curious how much it takes to get a boat into the same condition as yours.

      Hi, that sounds like you have a very good deal and a tidy boat. To be honest I’ve probably spent a similar amount. The big expense was the new 20 hp Tohatsu and the new trailer. What we never seem to remember to add in is the hours spent cleaning polishing and small items like rod holders, rubber mat on deck etc. You will get lots of fun with the 440 and if you take care of it will get most of your money back if you sell in future. Mine Coastliner is a keeper 👍

    I was there a few weeks ago for the Cod, and popped a light rod in the harbour. It was crab central both on the cod gear and the light gear. No fish at all for me. Fished Bervie the other evening and had a lot of small Codling, and a decent Dogfish.

      @ I have been up here 40 years and that’s my first. Seems there are a few about and the bit I was fishing appears to be a hot spot for them from what others have said. Don’t mind showing you if you fancy catching one. Bait was a mackerel fillet and lugworm cocktail on a pennel rig. 😊

    Hi Phil great video as always, I've fished Cullen Beach for 40 years but mostly past the rocks to the West of where you were.The tree stump is actually part of the war defences.on bigger tides or after a big Notherly gale there are quite a few still sticking out of the sand at various points...keep up the videos and tight lines

      Hi Lenny, thanks for sharing the information about the war defences. That make sense as there are many pill boxes and tank barriers along the coastline. @anotherangleUK วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi there, I'm not sure what function it performs. I assumed they were pumping salt water into the crab / lobster house to keep the holding tanks fresh? Looks a bit fragile considering the seas we get in these parts. Also interesting the creels / pots on the harbour wall were mostly the square wire type rather than tradition arched style. Have a great Christmas. Phil.

    Nice video Phil! Do you find using the feeder makes a significant difference? If so, how can you tell? Did you test it out by having 1 rod with the feeder and one without the feeder casted in the same area? Or is there no way to measure the difference and it's more of a confidence thing? Tight lines 🐟🎣!

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos. I think the feeders do improve the catch rate because you're adding to the bait trail in the current and getting the fish near the baited hooks. I have had two rods out, one with and one without. But this was a scientific comparison. Confidence has a great deal to do with it as well.

      I did try squid fishing at night at a place called Port Errol (Cruden Bay) nr Peterhead. Didn't have any success, even used a light as that's supposed to attract the squid. Plenty on the video footage from the boat though. The Porbeagle was something else I really hadn't expected. I put a 'short' up with appropriate music of the highlights. Incredible as you said.

    I've always wanted to try the flounder spoon after reading 'Sea Angling with the Baited Spoon' by John 'Seangler' Garrad. If I remember correctly he did most of it from the boat, and I think he had quite a lot of success for all sorts of species. The americans use a bigger version called a flasher while trolling, I wonder if it'd work when rough ground drifting for cod...

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, I think the flounder spoon would work well from the boat drifting over clean ground. Gordon made up some big 'fluke dowsers' that we tried off my boat on the Plaice video. The drift was far too fast that day but it has huge potential. Since making this video I have tweaked the set up and have shortened both the distance of the lead to the spoon and the spoon to the hook. I read 15 to 20cm was better. I'll give it another try sometime soon.

    Hi Phil love your videos, and to see to pals fishing is great . I follow Gordon's channel love them both. Is there any chance of showing use how you unhook the deeply hooked flounder. I still struggle with this. Take care Chris

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Chris, lovely to hear you're enjoying the videos. Next time we are fishing for flat fish we'll show the unhooking in more detail. The tool we use Gordon made from the bail arm of a broken fixed spool reel. The trick is to 'turn the hook' and at all costs take care to not damage the gills of the fish. Once mastered, almost all deep hooked fish can be returned in good condition. Phil.

      Chris, I had a look on Gordon's channel and he does explain how to extract a hook from a flounder in this video th-cam.com/video/jNyQ838T680/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LxWhHOpGlX1wPsmR&t=1445 We will try to do another video between us which will be easier with a second pair of hands to hold the camera. Cirrocumulous Stratiformis I think! Just been reading my weather book and its when all 3 cloud types merge! Lovely sunset at the end there. I used to use the "hot hands" but ended up getting some USB hand warmers that last about 5-6 hours and they're lovely. Only trouble is that the wife and kiddiwe always steal them!!! I also got a USB powered body warmer I can wear under the dry suit if needed which is very toasty and runs for about 5 hours on a 10K power bank.

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Dave, I've also looked these up. I'm with you thinking Cirrocumulus or Mackerel Sky. These are an indicator of rain on its way but interestingly the following day was dry and settled. The book I have is the Philip's Guide To Weather Forecasting which I picked up in the charity shop. I'll have to see about USB hand warmers because my hands just stop working in the cold.
