Paul Haworth Nightscape Journals
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 มี.ค. 2013
I'm Paul Haworth, a landscape astrophotographer from the Cambridgeshire Fens in East Anglia in the UK.
In this channel, I hope to share the amazing experience of being out in the peaceful countryside under a starlit sky as I shoot my nightscapes. I want to convey the beauty of the solitude and the silence, occasionally interrupted by the local wildlife, and inspire others to put their camera into manual mode and get out at night to take photographs. It's not a how-to channel - there are plenty of those that are brilliant - it's all about the experience.
I'll also share my timelapse videos, which capture the dynamic motion of the night sky and nighttime phenomena.
I hope you enjoy my videos. Feel free to get in touch with questions, recommendations or comments.

Milky Way from the Suffolk Coast | A Nightscape Journal | Astrophotography | Landscape Photography
Not every nightscape adventure goes to plan. Sometimes I just struggle to get into the groove, for no particularly reason. This was one such night, out on the beautiful coast at Covehithe in Suffolk, UK. I'd looked forward to shooting the wonderful gnarly, sunbleached remains of trees that had tumbled from the clifftops onto the beach. But could I find them?
But what I learned was that being out under a dark sky with the Milky Way rising is always a privilege, and to enjoy the experience as much as the output.

I use this channel to share my experiences of being out in the landscape at night photographing the night sky. I want to inspire others to give it a go, and also provide a route for those who can't get out to enjoy some of the experience.

The Great Aurora Storm | A Nightscape Journal | Northern Lights Photography | Solar Storm
มุมมอง 1.6Kวันที่ผ่านมา
The spectacular aurora display on the night of Friday 10th May 2024 will go down in history as the most witnessed and photographed astronomical event ever. I never imagined I would witness by eye colourful overhead pillars dancing above me in the southern half of the UK, but that's exactly what we got that night. It was a joy that so many people were able to see one of nature's spectacles from ...

Beautiful video Paul. To observe the Milky Way has always a special attraction and charm. I like it the part of the video where there is the sound of the waves on the beach and the view of the moon rising from the sea and with the constellation of scorpion.
Thanks Massimo - really appreciated. The sight of the moon rising was lovely - definitely a highlight of the night!
Was a great location Paul. Had a fun night even if I nearly lost my drone😂😂 clear skies
Ha ha, yes glad it decided to come back to you, Glenn!! Thanks for watching and the support. 🙏
Awesome stuff Paul! 😊
Thanks for your support as ever, Lisa. 🙏
Another great video Paul. Thanks to your Orford Ness video I am going on a trip tomorrow night (1St June) Not the best forecast or time of year, but who know what might happen. Derek
Thanks Derek, and awesome that you’re off to Orford tomorrow night!! Hope you enjoy it - I always wonder what it would have been like there during the big aurora event a few weeks ago!
Love the star trail composition and the Milky Way core was done well too. You still came out with rewarding shots despite your struggles here! Keep them coming Paul. :)
Cheers Geraint - appreciated. Hope you're well.
Yep, I know that feeling how I imagine how something will look like vs how it is in reality, but still previsualization is a very important tool for us. Love the composition and how the top of the building points at polaris. Great night.
Thanks Matej - appreciate the support. Expectation vs reality is always an interesting comparison!! Hope you're well.
Nice work Paul m8
Thanks Darrell - appreciated!
Great video, I finally found a TH-camr shooting similar stuff as me!!
Thanks Chris - appreciated. Worth checking out some of the other channels listed in the video description - they're all some of my favourite nightscape people.
Beautiful video. And you are right. Being under the Milky Way is always a privilege. x
Thank for watching, Silvia - agree, it always is!!
Excellent video Paul. It was a stunning place, and the beach was awesome with the Milky Way rising! I agree, to find the right composition was a challenge, but still a fantastic night and You captured it well Paul! Your star trail image was brilliant, that composition was spot on! Loved the Milky Way shot too👍 Thanks for a great night! Clear Skies!
Thanks Simon, and it was great to get out with you again. I'll maybe have to visit in the daytime at some point to find those pesky dead trees!! Thanks for your support. 🙏
Lovely video with some great images, the weather has been rubbish, hopefully going to get out while we are away in Norfolk for the next couple of weeks.
Thanks Bill - very kind of you. I agree on the recent weather - very unpredictable to say the least. Hopefully you’ll get some gaps up in Norfolk and be able to enjoy the fantastic skies up there - have a great break.
Very nice video Paul thanks for taking us along
Thanks for watching and for your support, Tony. 🙏
Oh, by the way. For me - both with my own videos and the ones I like to watch - it´s more about capturing the experience. It´s not all about getting that perfect shot. The videos with photographers just going out and collecting those perfect shots are kind of boring to be honest. That said - your shots turned out great! I especially like the one with the small path and the bushes in front of the MW.
Oh, 100% it’s about the experience. I was trying to show that sometimes the experience can be frustrating and you’re not sure why!! And when I look back at the footage and see the Milky Way rising over the sea, I wonder what I was complaining about given it was just so beautiful out there!!
Coastal erosion is a problem but still a natural process that has also created some of the most stunning coastal scenery 🙂 Great (and relatable!) video as always. I´m stuck in the editing swamp myself 😂Just a thought - wouldn´t it make a great shot to frame the startrails in just one of the arches, with maybe an 85 mm or so? Could you try that for me, since I don´t have a ruin like that 🙂 Edit: a portrait shot is what I wanted.
Actually that’s a great idea for a shot! The longest lens I had was 50mm, which could probably have worked. Maybe next time! Thanks for the support as ever, Martin. Hope all’s well with you and the family and you’re able to get through your edits!
....the idea of the shot was alot better than the reality... 'T' shirt motto
Ha ha, I´d wear that too! 😂
Relatable!! I guess that’s why we keep coming back to places, better prepared and a little wiser. Thanks for watching, Paul - appreciated.
Paul’s going to open his new apparel store shortly! 👕
That’s a nice stance you struck there Paul. Great photographs. Some nights can justify be frustrating for no obvious reason. I usually find I cause my own frustration when my pre visualise shots don’t match reality.
That’s exactly what I’d done!! I was also frustrated with myself as I was with some others and wanted to give them my attention as well, but was (rather selfishly) all wrapped up in the shot I’d wanted to get!! But still nice to be out under the stars.
Excellent video Paul. Best laid plans etc etc, things can't always go to plan but still a great result and a nice set of images.
Thanks, Pete. I’m glad I managed to salvage some decent images, and I probably didn’t need to be so grumpy, but it was still great to be out under the stars!
Hello, I live here and know the views, the places, the houseboat well. But, I have never seen it like this before. I have been missing out on great beauty, so thank you for illuminating this, literally. I have now subscribed and find this fascinating. I will enjoy watching your other videos and your work.
Thanks for your very kind comment, Robert. What an amazing place you live in - I’d love to get back in the day at some point and have a proper explore. Hope you enjoy my other videos.
Amazing!
Thank you - appreciated. It really was an amazing night!!
Nice work Paul
Thank you - appreciated. 🙏
@@nightscapejournals love the drone footage
We got a fabulous Aurora in Auckland, New Zealand. Latitude 37 degrees South, so similar latitude to Gibraltar. Told my wife we had just saved $30,000. . . ticked off a bucket list item without a trip to Northern Norway!
Wow, Bruce, that’s amazingly far north!! Glad you managed to enjoy the show. Norway is still definitely worth the visit at some point - a stunning place, with some similarities to parts of the South Island. Thanks for watching.
Just watching your video and I had pretty much the same gear on the night ( canon 6d/Sigma 24mm f 1 4 and canon 80d/Samyang 14mm F2.8) I was shooting from the NE of Scotland and had to look south to see it though was overhead for most of the night. A truly once in a lifetime experience, though I hope not. Great video!
Fantastic, and thank you for watching. I hope you managed to get some great images. I can well imagine how it was overhead or south for you!! Amazing display - definitely hope to see a repeat from these latitudes one day!
@@nightscapejournals yep. 3000+ shots to work through and some amazing Corona shots. What a night.
What a surreal event it was, footage you've captured there Paul is just stunning.
Thanks Dominic - really appreciated. I’m looking forward to watching your video - just need to find a quiet time to sit down!!
Wonderful night that was the best Aurora I've ever witnessed! You got some great footage and time lapses (fantastic 'drone' panorama) Paul. Love the foreground too. Fantastic stuff!
Thanks for the support, Geraint- it really was a spectacular night, wasn’t it? Glad you captured some goodies too!
Great video for a great event Paul. Fantastic weather condition also. The Aurora was also visible from the north part of Italy.
Thanks so much, Massimo. Amazing that it was visible from the north of Italy - really shows the magnitude of the event!!
@@nightscapejournals Unfortunatelly i was busy and I did not see the event. I saw some photos taken by friends and the red halo of the upper part of aurora was well marked and clearly visible.
That second shot is absurdly cool! That was such a crazy night, I was wildly swinging my camera around in every direction I had no idea where to look it was all so amazing.
It really was one of those nights when finding and sticking with a composition was hard! Maybe that was a lesson to us all to just stop clicking away and watch it! Thanks so much for watching - hope you came away with some great pictures.
Great video! I loved how you showed pictures and timelapses during the video, it was really immersive! 10/10 Thanks for sharing!
Very kind of you, Roy. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching. 👍
Great video Paul. A pure bliss night we will remember. Glad to you sharing your experience with us! Have a nice day!
Thanks for your kind comments. It really was an awesome night. 👍
Oh, I almost forgot - that hyperlapse turned out great as well!
Thanks - it needed a bit of stabilisation but gradually this whole idea is beginning to come together! I think having something small and high-contrast in the frame (in this case the top of the dish) helps, as you can then anchor on that during stabilisation.
@@nightscapejournals I think you are right about that! I might try with the noctilucent clouds if they care to grace us with their presence this year 😅
Awesome video Paul! Was getting bored here at the hospital so great timing 🙂 Ha ha, my favourite timelapse might actually be the one with the drone in frame. Looked really cool seing it like a green flash moving around. Btw, what are you filming with, when both 6D:s are doing timelapse?
Thanks Martin - really glad it brought some light relief for you. Yes I quite enjoyed the drone one too - told some of the story of the night and there happened to be a “swish” in the music at exactly the right moment!! I always film on my Sony A7S, which basically sees in the dark!
Another great video Paul...I hope you`ve ordered a canvas for your wall of that wide view stitched pano??...awesome mate 👏
Thanks so much, Pete - really appreciated!! I need to choose - and not sure I’ve got much wall space left!! Maybe I need a reorganisation.!
Wow, Paul what a super video of the night, love the timelapse with the moving arrays, well done in putting this together 👏👏👏
Thank Chris - really appreciated and glad you enjoyed it.
This is the one journal I've been looking forward to ever since the Aurora display. Thank you Paul, I bow to thee. I coukd just relive the excitement of the night each moment that you had, remembering all with such clarity. Once again the perfect foreground choice for the possibly once in a lifetime aurora display. Your images are breathtaking easily matching the Aurora show. With ought your guidance, information and help I would never be at a position to take on Widefield Astrophotography and capture the Aurora myself, so thank younso much.
Thanks Lee - that means a lot. So glad you managed to get out and capture your awesome timelapses. Definitely one for the record books!
Inspired by your commitment to capturing such a stunning display of the aurora. Great video mate. Loved it!
Thanks so much - really appreciated. I had to make the most of such an epic display!
Absolutely beautiful
Thanks, Kat - really appreciated and thanks for watching! 😊
it doesn't get better than this.
Thanks Paul. A phenomenal night. Enjoyed every second!
Phenomenal work mate!! What a great video! ❤
Thanks Luke - really appreciated. What a night!
Wow, what an amazing video you've produced here Paul. You went to extraordinary effort with this one and it really shows my friend. Love all the images and timelapses . .and especially the drone work. You captured this remarkable night so beautifully. Really well done.
Thanks so much for the support and kind words, Richard - really appreciated. It was a particularly videogenic (is that a word?!) night!
You probably seen mine from Thurne, Norfolk before it fogged out 😊 very good watch BTW
Thanks, Simon - appreciated. Sorry you fogged out - I’d been thinking about heading up to the Norfolk coast but stayed local for exactly that reason.
I"ve been waiting all day to watch this one properly and it was phenominal Paul! You captured this historical night beautifully. Compliments on how relatively structured you've been able to get your video. The stuff you say actually makes sense, no dogs 😅. Thanks so much again for putting in the hours for our enjoyment. Although I can imagine this is one of the best souvenirs one can wish from such an historical event 👌.
Thanks Jeroen - massively appreciate the support and inspiration, mate. Ha ha, no “dogs”, but I think they tell the story too, right? The craziness of the whole evening distilled into one bonkers and brilliant catchphrase! 🤣🤣 Definitely a souvenir for me. 👍
Thanks for your great video of the Aurora , that Friday night was out of this world, it was first time seeing the Aurora, and seeing from London, OMG! They are no words 😊😲
Thanks so much for your kind comment, Corin. Amazing you saw it from London too - I did think at one point “this would look really cool with Tower Bridge as a foreground” - I reckon that might have been possible at its brightest moments!
@@nightscapejournals On that Friday night, I had just got in from work, I had set up my Astrophotography rig to image M101, but as look at the data , I couldn't understand why the M 101 data was so faint so I went outside and my amazement I looked North and saw the Aurora for the first time 😲
great video, and what a location! it was a bonkers night, the biggest activity I have seen & first time for a full corona visible to the eye for me here in Scotland and the first time I have wished for a lens wider than 28mm on full frame. At times I did not know where to look next, the activity was so wild and so far reaching, going fully South at times. Sleep did not happen that night. I love your reaction in several parts of the video, as I can recall feelng the same elation myself. Amazeballs!!
Thanks so much for watching and your kind comment. This event really messed with my “stock” Aurora compositions because it just wouldn’t stay in the north!! Sounds like it must have been spectacular up there. Sensational night!
Epic one Paul you really captured the vibe off a once in a lifetime night. Just fantastic!
Thanks so much - it really was an amazing night. I just lacked a motorbike!! 🏍️
Wow Paul, definitely one of your best videos mate😀 I’ve so looked forward to this! Thanks for the heads up on that Friday, when you said it’s not a drill😀 I, like many were able to see a fantastic show! I too think it was better than when I saw them in Finland back in 2020! Your location was spot on Paul! A great backdrop! So cool to see the telescopes all moving in unison 😀 Nice hyperlapse too! Super Timelapses, some of the best I’ve seen! 👍 Excellent work, clear skies!
Thanks, Simon - really appreciate the support. so glad you got to see it - an absolutely epic night! I was so chuffed when the telescopes started moving - an absolute bonus!
Great video of the aurora storm and superb coverage of how the event developed throughout the night. Glad you caught the corona too and seeing the aurora to the south - such a rare occurrence for the UK. A truly memorable night. The hyper lapse and pano shots were amazing. Excellent stuff! 😃
Cheers, Steve - really appreciate that. It was an absolutely sensational night - still buzzing now!!
Super video Paul ..... great soundtrack too unleashing the bass in my new cans !!! 🙂
Ha ha, thanks Chris. I felt like after all the ambient timelapses it was time to unleash a bit of bass into the proceedings and do things a bit differently. What a night!
@@nightscapejournals it certainly was …. life-affirming !!!👍🙂✨
Well worth the wait for the video Paul, what a amazing night and a beautiful video.
Thanks Bill - really appreciated. I keep reliving the night in my mind, so having the video as well is a bonus!
