Very interesting hike/climb to the Grotto. Excellent drone footage. Thanks!
We've been in Uneva, back to the mining ruins. It's a tough drive to do that last part leading to Uneva. Now we'll have to go back and see the petroglyphs.
More than "cool" Check your thesaurus!
Super cool adventure in the swell! This place has so many cool things to discover and explore, and this adventure you took us on was really crazy cool. I have to admit, I would be nervous to do this one solo.lol😅 but you did a brilliant job sharing it. The slots are amazing and that grotto is incredible. The old shack is a super interesting find. Loved the whole adventure. Hung with you the whole 15.5 min. Thanks for the epic adventure!
Thank you, honestly, this is one of my more chill adventures. I get into some really wild places. I checked out your channel, Great edits and voice over! Cheers, Karl
The Drone gets all those shots !
The drone gets very few of the shots, I just have to work for it. The canyon is to tight for the Drone. and solid GPS signal. Some day I hope though!
How do you film yourself ?
Set up the camera on the tripod and hit record
Your adventures in The Swell always amaze me, thanks again for the documentation 👍👍👍!
Glad you liked it, there's so much to explore in the Swell as you know!
One of if not the best camera work I've seen of the Buckhorn/Wedge area. Unfortunately my kayak doesn't work with my trailer. Just wish I was 30-40 years younger. When I was living in southcentral Montana spent many days Kayaking the Yellowstone. Now live a few miles upstream on a tributary of the Savanah and still enjoy my time on the water.
Could you find a buddy? I did it in a 2 pound inflatable but, not sure I would recommend that but, a 4-6 lb proper pack raft could do it? Thank you for the kind words, I hope to do more river trips next season. Cheers Karl
I rode my motorcycle diagonally across Utah, southwest to Northeast. I was amazed by the beauty and diversity of the landscape. Highly recommended trip especially in early spring months. Thanks Karl another great video
That sounds like a great trip, I love traveling Utah on bikes, such a diversity of awesome scenery and plenty of thrills too. Cheers Brother!
The whole Green River area is an underappreciated place for exploring and adventure. Thanks for the video.
I couldn't agree more, it's a gem in the desert! Three Canyon was another cool one that took me right to river's edge.
More cool stuff, beautifully done as always Karl. I'm planning 2 days of peakbagging in Zion once the snow melts, maybe between mid-April and early May. Day 1: The Watchman. Day 2: Loop hike to Deertrap (using Class 4 south ridge), South Ariel, the Ant Hill, and Progeny. I know it's not exactly your backyard. Any interest in joining?
Your route sounds very enticing, at least what I can piece together, South Arial is the only question mark? I would be interested in joining you, do you have a GPX track or something I can see that roughly shows the route? I have definitely been meaning to get out there, would you shoot me an email to karl.Dzmac@gmail.com and hopefully we can make a plan if we could pull off the South ridge up to deer trap, then back down to Progeny and traverse over to anthill that would be super epic, but I'm not sure of the realities, looks like lots of barriers.
When you stash the bike, do you leave a note? The chances are never zero right?
If I feel nervous I stash it well for theft but I think most people that far out understand the necessity, and I feel fairly safe since I have satellite communication on the phone and before that I used a Garmin mini in reach. I definitely appreciate the risk and always have a Plan B. I think the odds are well above zero. I've taken a few hits already, just not bad enough ones to stop me from getting home under my own power.
Neat video with the Grotto and the cool arch!😀👍
Glad you liked it! There are so many cool spots out there, just waiting to be explored. You have been to most I'd Guess?
Haven’t been to the Grotto or that arch.
Tool called, they wanna hire the guitar intro fella.
Outstanding hike, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked it, that area is so cool!
The overhang of that arch looked super cool! Thanks for the video!
It was shockingly far out there and created a giant amphitheater, totally rain protected barring the flash flood, LOL! Made me wonder how long it'll stay up like that.
There is so much to see in the swell that doesnt get the publicity of the parks. Great video as always.
It's a true hidden gem, that's for sure! I think the lack of amenities really keeps many away.
Its the amenities that keep the sheep in a herd. Leaving those hidden gems for people like us. Thank you for taking me along.
Where you were navigating the rock that has the webbing and the pool underneath... how far past that (on the pool side) were you able to hike? My husband and I got to the top of that rock and didn't go past it, but it looks really doable. We're going back in 3 months with some friends so we'll be more confident to try it. Thanks !
I never did reach something that was going to stop me, I think you can make it moving carefully, maybe bring a hand line.
This is my favorite video on this channel. Chicago Basin is just beautiful and congrats on two more summits! As a California native and someone who did his first few 14ers only last year, I think I'll build up 14er experience before attempting these Chicago Basin peaks. But I plan to attempt Longs Peak this year🤞 Keep up the great work, Karl!
Honestly, in my opinion, Longs would be much harder as a big Long one day push. The technical sections on this weren't really any harder and relatively easy/short hikes if you have a high base camp as we did. Thanks for your support, Karl
Another great video Karl!
Thanks for watching, what a cool place to ride!
The drop down the dryfall is otherworldly. Such a feast for my eyes! Karl does it again!
Glad you enjoyed it, my friend that was a committing rappel into a beautiful canyon!
I love hiking with Karl. The places he takes me are incredible! Thanks Karl!
This fall I spent some time around Factory Butte then up to the Wedge/Buckhorn area. Planned to stay longer but Helene forced an early return to South Carolina. Already planned a next Fall trip back to the Swell and this video has added ideas to the plan. Thanks! Great work
I would strongly recommend getting the road trip Ryan app, all kinds of great ideas with instructions maps and GPS coordinates to go along with it, totally worth six bucks! I use it all the time.
I certainly LOVE that Glacier Gorge cirque. Gnarly and beautiful with not too many places to match it. Wish I could skate around it like you. So effortless for you even class 4 & 5. Very fun to watch. Thanks Karl!
Thanks! I really enjoy those types of routes and the Glacier Gorge cirque is one of my favorites in RMNP. It was a big day, though, not quite as easy as it looks lol!
Otherworldly I would call it. Lots to adventure and see in this area. I might have to do the travel sometime. Thanks for the trip Karl!
I think you'll find that it lives up to the hype! Anytime!
Very epic place Karl! Thats a long drive in there on quite a nasty road to get to that entrance to the Maze district so I may not take to doing this route. Very enticing though I have to say and seems it might rival Antelope Canyon without the masses to deal with. Great footage as usual Karl. Love the slot canyons and this one seems doable for the most part for an intermediate skill level. Hopefully one day.
Yeah it's a real challenge to get in there for sure, washboard for miles, but I was glad to do it! Thanks for your support Michael!
I was thinking before watching your video that this would be an intense adventure as many of your cruises are but I will now have to say that this was a misadventure when it comes that close to being a final failure. I feel you though as I too consider myself a bit on the beyond adventure side of life at times and I did have to be rescued with a miscalculation this last summer so was with you all the way on this one. What a beautiful canyon that was so thanks for all the great shots from pleasant flower varieties to questionable slot canyon gps service connection and somewhat unknown waterway rafting that had a good chance held within them to wash you into a miscalculation and very dangerous reconstructed exit. Very exciting though and so glad you made it out. Again, lived to tell the story! Best!
I'd have to agree, I felt a twinge when I was getting ready with the raft, I was more worried about water levels, then getting trapped by the cliffs surprise me. I'm actually excited to go back and ride the entire road bike packing to the petrified wood and have an easy stroll to the canyon and back. It has made me more cautious in general. Things can go sideways super fast in the desert between the cliffs and the water situation. I feel safer in the mountains where I can see, climb easier, and always have water.
I love what you do! So cool!
Me too, I may not do any Super human endurance feats but that's not what I enjoy. I love all the surprising, unique and exciting thrills while exploring such a wide variety of landscapes, love the wildlife too. That and I'll always be a climber! Thanks Steve!
This is some of the most amazing camera work. Very well done. You should get an award for this one.
I appreciate it, I had a lot of fun with this one! Not so challenging left me energy to focus on the shots more, till I started running from the rain anyway, LOL.
Randy and I are watching your newest Mt Elliott adventure on Christmas morning here in Colorado. We have been subscribers for years. You are the BEST adventurer ever, and your videos are also. We love going with you vicariously to all of your adventure zones. Many thanks and Merry Christmas!
I thank you so much! It is so cool that you have taken this journey with me and we have gone so far, seen and done so many amazing things. Few really understand true breadth and depth of these wild adventures. I'm glad some do. I'm putting the $ toward a couple new small cameras. Merry Christmas to you!
Great adventure to a remote landscape! Merry Christmas.
Some of these desert venues feel like space walks, LOL. Where no man has gone before and nobody is coming to save me. I pack very cautiously, and try to consider any and all pitfalls when I'm as far as that trip took us! Sure was cool!
Did this on my motorcycle a few years back. Amazing, fun ride. The river is very unique because it flows INTO this canyon. Where you turn off the highway is the TOP of the canyon. The river flows into the green river a few miles down. This is some of the most desolate and empty land you will ever see. The river was a lot deeper when I did it, we were worried about swamping our bikes.
When I was researching the trip I too noticed the river direction, I guess the river was there first and cut through the Mesa as it lifted? How else could it possibly go like that, didn't just decide to start cutting through the side of Mesa, crazy. I almost gave up on this trip, it was a miracle I found such a friendly place across nowhere else was like it. The road itself, where across the river, was super deep! No way would I risk the E=bike and $2,000 worth of camera gear. Everywhere else was sketchy, deep and fast. I literally couldn't understand how it could possibly be so friendly in that one spot right at the end of trail Canyon. Seemed like less CFM's than everywhere else, but, getting through the brush on the other side was a major shitter, lol. Russian Olive trees!!!
I often admired thus point going to and from the San Rafeal Swell but never thought about trying it. For about 30 years I made monthly trips to Grand Junction so of course I spent quite a bit of time in the Books. Although I considered myself a seasoned veteran of bad rock through my exploration of the San Juans the Books were in entirely different league. A lot of solid rocks "held" in place by soft shale. Absolutely nothing offered a reasonably safe hand or foot hold. While I enjoyed the thrill of route finding and climbing and accepted that bad "luck" (usually errors of route climbing or over confidence in my abilities combined with under estimation of the level of difficulty) it is entirely different to depend on "good luck" to somehow succeed or even survive. Speaking of epic have you ever tried Factory Butte. Very distinctive but I can only imagine the quality of the rock. Looking it over with binocs always made me cringe. Sounds like a winner!
This was a total wild ride, but Factory Butte is something else! I do want to push up as far as is reasonable but the reports I read about gettin over the crown at the top, No Can DO, LOL I had a GPS bread crumb trail going for this and SO GLAD. It was late and that last bit was tricky and windy. Running back down the GPS guidance really sped things up and with no stress of cliffing out! Some use tech and become soft and some use tech to go farther. I try to be the latter.
I love how you show in detail where you are at, how you get there and the different angles with a drone, etc. I will never get to go but as a geographer it's so cool to this. We didn't have this availability years ago. Thanks Karl
One thing I get so annoyed with, TH-camrs doing some awesome hike and Only using a POV style shoot. There is no context and no matter how cool the trip, the video sucks. . . I love providing that context so you can truly join me and appreciate exactly where we are and what we're doing! Glad you could come along!
Karl's the kinda guy that would be into that little ledge and maybe a cool little sneak. Should be fine. Merry Christmas!
Dam Straight! I love that S#!T! Thanks for supporting me for all these years! It's been a wild ride, merry Christmas
Nice climb, looks epic!
I'm glad you liked it! It's a tough one, but worth the effort.
Wow is right! Had me smiling the entire time. Did the vehicles you passed on your bike get there via a different route or did they cross that same creek?
They had to have crossed the creek, which was really surprising to me, though. I was totally grateful because they left nice tracks in the snow! The creek did look scary deep at the crossing, with icebergs, I think it got dug out in the creep bed because it was a really steep exit, but somehow they did it.
Merry Christmas Karl, love how you use GE and Drone views to take us there 'like a bird'...Love seeing all these cool places that I missed in my younger days... Cheers
Thanks for watching, I really like using the drone to reveal the 'unseen'! and truely show you the context of a place! you're always welcome to join me.
Another unique location. Thanks for taking us along and Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you as well!
That's still part of the Bookcliffs, right? Where's your Dollar Store waders? That snow covered rough and rocky stuff makes me nervous, never know when a gotcha rock will bite ya. This video was fun, looking forward to the next one, thanks Karl.
The waders sure would've been nice for this one. I do my best to tiptoe around the snow, avoid the holes and getting wet rubber on my shoes! Still, just that brittle desert rock has gotten me a few times. . . Glad you could join me, Brother Man!
“Super loose class two”, There is a lot of that in the Utah desert. Beautiful video! Thanks
Yeah pretty much the whole thing, or worse lol, you have to find the right line, and it’s all loose rock. Thanks for joining me Phil, Cheers
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Quite the adventure and you pulled it off. You're in a class by yourself!!!! 😯😯😯😯😯👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, it was a great adventure, I can't wait to get back out there in the spring with some greenery to go with that brown, I think your jeep could do it. I met an old timer while searching for a river crossing and he told me when Spring irrigation starts the river goes way down! I bet you'd like that trip.
As you started down I thought to myself put your gloves on! Wise man…
And that was one of the loosest slopes of talus I've ever been on, these days I generally wear a high collar approach shoes for the off trail adventures as well. Ankle biters everywhere. Cheers, Karl
Hey man thanks for this video it helped me and my friend summit!! We trad climbing these pitches!
I'm Jealous, I'd say gearing up for that last pitch was critical, even that lower slab was pretty intense. I remember thinking after that boulder rolled under my feet how lucky I was not to have twist an ankle or something, that slab downclimb would have been impossible if I had got dinged up. I bet the summit was amazing. Nice Job! Karl
Karl deserves an award for his outstanding subjective cinematography!
Thanks Charles! I have really been enjoying that aspect of these trip more and more, have you seen that latest video in the Hanksville Bentonite hills? I was really happy with it. Cheers Buddy!
@KarlDeckerPresents I will watch it now. Thank you.
@KarlDeckerPresents the Bentonite hills video is outstanding. Your videos take me to all the places I want to see and dont know it. As an ex Utahn, you more than do the Plateau justice! Thanks Karl.
The fisheye lens nearly pitched me out of my seat! Nice touch. Easy but exposure he says. You will starve before you hit bottom!
It is intense, but worth it!
Thank you Karl! You have a new fan!
My Pleasure Charles. Many more adventures to come!
I would have kept watching, but wtf is this music.
Punch Deck! Sorry Man but, for me editing to music I like is part of the fun and I think helps tell the story but, I will admit, in past videos it is just too loud. I've tone it down since.
It's very impressive and cool! I see something similar and unique. Than you for the original shots and the opportunity to learn something new.
I was amazed myself, glad you enjoyed it!
You're top of the crop for CO climbing/scrambling videos featuring peaks less traveled. I've watched some of these multiple times as I dream about the coming climbing season(s). At points in the past, I've spent hours searching for beta on interesting San Juan peaks, many times to no avail. Your channel is a huge benefit. Thank you.
Thanks! I'm really glad to hear that, my time spent researching these peaks has paid off. I'm ALWAYS interested in what you might find as well. Please share if you find an Epic Route! Maybe we could do one together sometime?
