A tour of a great rock shop: Page's.
You've heard me talking about stones and slabs I've gotten from Page's, and I thought it was long overdue that I take you on a tour of the shop. The owner, Clark, is a great source of information and knowledge, and gets his stones at such a low price that he can pass the savings on. For more information on this great shop in Montague, MI in the White Lake area you can run a quick search, or find all the contact information on his Facebook page at:

A quick guide for dry polishing rocks.
มุมมอง 38214 วันที่ผ่านมา
I've been having some success using corn cob media as a dry polishing agent to get a good shine on stones and thought I'd share the process. This is the media I ordered, but it's a huge bag! Don't get this much if you're not going to do a lot of polishing. www.amazon.com/dp/B0063GT330?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I love the shine in these hues of blue opals.
มุมมอง 1.3K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
I bought some blue opals from Page's in Montague and gave them a whirl in the vibratory tumbler. There was some snags along the way, but it didn't stop them from turning out amazing. To find more info on Page's: pagesllcd
Turning four rocks into beautiful jewelry.

I found some footage that is almost a year old that kind of fell through the cracks as I worked on stuff that excited me more. Having a lull in filming, I found this and thought I'd share. I spent more time at the end to explain how I wire wrap the stones, though, so I hope it inspires someone to get to wrapping! The music in this video was graciously provided by Cristopher Dragone. Blue Apatite...and how to not tumble it. 😥
มุมมอง 1K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I bought some blue apatite from Page's in Montague, and quickly discovered I shouldn't have worked it like normal stones. Life's a process where you learn from mistakes, and I'm hoping you can learn from mine before repeating them. Well, with tumbling blue apatite, anyway. These stones are listed as a 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale, but they certainly didn't tumble that way. I show each step through the process this time so that you can see just how odd these stones are. I got some advice from Kelly on this tumble. OUTSTANDING RELATIONSHIP BUILT!!! Predestined and Ordained= Just my Opinion. He does have an Outstanding Rock Shop!!! Thank You For Sharing.
He's a Christian, too. It's amazing how easy it is to form great relationships when you're already brothers and sisters, isn't it?
Gotta confess, that pink sphere at 4;54 made me inhale with a gasp!! But my-oh-my every item in that store was like a sweet tooth seeing candy for the first time!! Love the rough stones you showed at the end, man I'd be in seventh heaven with that bucket of gems!! Late 1980's was told of an arts supply store near us, it was a narrow but very long shop. Had art supplies up-front but out-back had crystals behind old wooden glass fronted cabinets, spent hours looking at its wonders until spending the few few dollars I had on some single & double terminator quartz, plus a rose quartz that was shaped like a triangle teardrop. Made the rose quartz into a pendant that I wore daily as a teenager until it was lost when my glue job failed. The terminators, I still have, they now rest in my own wooden glass fronted shelves among other saved treasures. Though nothing specimen worthy😅 Goldstone / Firestone comes in various colours: Red, Brown, Pink, and the dark blue purple grey you found is my favourite. I was told it's like molten glass/stone with metal dust mixed into it. I've made bracelets out of drilled rectangular tube pieces but it can have a tendency to be more fragile than natural hard stone and can crack if stressed or if it has unseen flaws.
Sounds like a great a little shop you had. I wish I could have seen it, and a bummer about the lost crystal. Thanks for the tips on the goldstone. I'll make sure I use a smooth blade if I want to cut it to avoid breaking it. Thanks for watching.
Loved it, beautiful store, amazing selection of rocks……
Thank you. I love that he has everything from rough to finished stones.
What a great store ! I could spend some time in there ! So much to look at ! Your pick ups are awesome ! Enjoyed the store tour 😊
Thanks! Best part is there's seating, so you can rest for a bit and then keep on shopping. hehe
Didn't see any primer used when glueing
I can't remember if I did initially. I know I later corrected the barrels and I did then. I'll be redoing this video soon, though, and correcting previous errors.
Thanks I’ll be looking forward to seeing the new video.
A parts list would be outstanding.
I am about a week away from releasing a video where I show the complete build of a new tumbler. The parts list will be almost identical to the list for the tumbler in this video, but I'll have more control over the content, and thusly a full parts list.
Awesome video! Those should turn out awesome! Family card night 😊
I hope they do! I'll be showing the results either way.
Nice orders!!!
Thank you!
Poor mom!
Don't worry, she already has many of my pieces in her collection.
OMG now you got me wanting to buy the large Bahia's. Make Mom a necklace 🤣Can't wait to see all of them tumbled. Yous all are so fun to watch 🤣👍
hehe. She'll have a new necklace before long. When you see the results I had cutting into those large nodules, you'll definitely want some for yourself.
@@kengensjewelry can't wait to see them :)
Very very beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing it done. And yes, please make your mom a necklace! 😁
She'll have a necklace before long. Probably before the results of the tumbles are in. Probably.
Awesome video Love your content, thank you for sharing 🎉
Thanks so much! I'll keep the content coming.
Just made my first diy tumbler, This was helpful video 👍 I made 3 barrel tumbler first. Next one is bigger 😄👍 My rpm is about 35 now, little slow i think. But i think putting some rubber tube to shaft increase the rpm some.
I'm glad it helped! Isn't it funny how the first one is big enough until it's built...then it's not?
So glad to see how well it works for you. It saved the day for me with fluorite a few years back. Oh Copper Harbor :) Wishing you and your family a wonderful time up there. It is so awesome up there😊
Well, you gave me the idea for the dry polish, so thank you.
Liked the video 👍👍. They turned out really beautiful ✌️🫶😃
Thank you so much!
This was very interesting and helpful. I’m going to have to try this. Thank you!! They are gorgeous!!! 👍✌️🫶😃
I've been struggling with these stones for almost a year, so I'm glad the sweat and tears can help.
This bearing modification should make the motor and belts last a lot longer since everything is running much easier and smoother without occasional resistance from needing oiling Etc. Brilliant!
I haven't run the unit a ton since the modification, but it is running much smoother.
I Personally Take Our Rocks and Grind Down The Rough Edges Before We Put Them In A Rotary Or Vibratory Tumblers. Call It Cheating, But It Speeds Up The Process. Prospector Paul Also Uses His Diamond Saw Blade To Remove Rough Edges Of His Rocks Before Tumbling Mate.
That's not a bad way to get them started at all. I like to do that with agates that I'm familiar with to save WEEKS in the tumbler.
Beauties I Tell You, Beauties.
These were impressive from the get go. I'm glad you like them.
They are Your Rocks, Do What You Need To Get Them Done The Way, You Want It Done.
For sure! I was just hoping to make a vibro video only, but I have some coquina jaspers on the way that will do nicely.

Thank you!
treadmill motors work great. and if you have the controller it can be variable speed.
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks Ken for showing the process and giving the timing of these lovelies. Nice seeing this video from you. 😊
I've slowed down a bit, but I just got a fresh batch of rocks and my homemade tumble is in the last stretch, so hopefully I'll get back to posting regularly, again.
Get rid of the thumping noisy belt. Use a soft rubber o'ring. Works great. EPDM FDA O-Ring 70 Duro Black Model: E70343 Dimensions: 3-3/4"ID X 4-1/8"OD X 3/16"CS
I've had a lot of people say that. If I ever go back to those tumblers, I'll give the o rings a try.
Always appreciate your honesty. After all long and somewhat challenging process they turned out amazing looking ! I can see why your wife loves them. They are beautiful. You even have some little ones to make your wife some earrings😊
Our anniversary is coming up. I think these are going to be a shoe in for hubby brownie points.
Oh how fun to see you create magic ! Love the variety of designs and rocks you use ! Have a great up coming weekend. Maybe it will be warm enough for yous to hit the beach 😊
We have to hit the beach soon. I'm running out of rocks!
Amazing work.
Thank you!
I cut three 1" strips the length of the "barrel" & glued them in place in the interior. This helps with the cascading of the rocks. With no strips the load tends to slide vs cascade.
Thanks! I'd considered that but didn't know if the extra effort would be worth it.
I run four rotary tumblers. I tried this urethane belt material to make drive belts but they would not last long. I now use o'rings of the appropriate size. Consider EPDM FDA O-Ring 70 Duro Black Model: E70343 Dimensions: 3-3/4"ID X 4-1/8"OD X 3/16"CS
Thank you! I'm always up to try new belting material.
Well, now I know what I am doing wrong. I was hammering them in a plastic bag and I really had no control on where I broke the glass. But this does seem more dangerous. I also thought of just throwing the glass on the cement. lol
Yeah, I do recommend covering the glass. I left it uncovered for this video (if I remember right), but I actually cover it with a piece of old blue jeans. I can feel where I want to strike through the denim without getting glass shrapnel everywhere.
@@kengensjewelry I did do it uncovered but it turned out the same as far as shapes. I did a lot of turning my head and ducking. Luckily I did not get hurt nextime I will wrap iti in a towel.
I've been covering mine in an old pair of jeans that I cut up. The material is more sturdy and doesn't trap the sliver inducing shards.
Very nice!
Thank you!
Oh nicely done! Running the pillow block bearings like that was really clever!
Thanks! I wish I could take credit for it, but it was all my dad's idea.
SUPER helpful!!!! Thank you!!
Awesome! Stay tuned, I'm currently building another tumbler and am going to show the complete build and step by step instructions.
Maybe glue some rubber on the end caps. I’d probably use some sort of resin or just use the lids on both sides. I’ve been wanting to try this as well PVC probably won’t last as long as the original barrels but it’s cheap so no biggie to replace.
So far I haven't had any trouble with them holding up, other than the cheap end caps had to be replaced within a month. It's looking like I might get a year out of them before the barrels need to be replaced.
So jealous…. I’m in Raleigh nc
There are some stones down there I'd like to get my hands on, though!
Awesome work
Thanks!
Subscribed because of this
Awesome! Stay tuned, because I've started on a new one with even more details for building it.
Great job thank you the math was not bad
Thanks. Sometimes it takes a minute to get the math figured out, again. 😀
They are your bread and butter the tumbled rocks.
They are. They draw a lot of attention to my booth and sets me apart from the other jewelry crafters.
I can't over how nice they look :) 25:55 is amazing looking ! Wow that horn coral really shined up nicely ! Great looking rocks and fossils😊
For sure that one's my favorite. I've never had coral shine up that well when mixed with harder stones. I'm definitely going to have to try to get that shine, again.
Very nice project 👍
Thank you! I'll be rolling up my sleeves next week and getting into building the next one.
Thanks for the video 👍
My pleasure, as always.
12 hours your belt broke??! 🤔
Wet kiss 😁
On my first HF tumbler. After that I knew how to take better care of them and I think the last two I had the belts lasted over a month.
Nice rocks! Too bad you couldn't get a good polish on them.
Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. The fun is in the process, right?
Hit them with a UV light, some of my Montana moss glows yellow under my UV Beast light. I agree, they're tough and take a long time to shape...almost as long as bloodstone.
Thanks for the tip. I'll break out the UV light.
Beautiful video Ken! Nice to see how they turned out and mediums used
Thank you!
I built my own tumbler as well
That's awesome! They are so much fun to build.
