Great road trip. I did it about 12 years ago in my then Subaru. Completely agree with the autobahn. I think I hit 145 and thought the bonnet was going to lift off where the bonnet scoop was 😂. Did a lap of the ring and then enjoyed spectating with beer in hand. Great place 👍

I had a 3.4 996 years ago, the bore scoring noise was only there once the engine had warmed up fully, oil pressure has dropped, and at idle. Any rev of the engine and the oil pressure would go up and noise stop. No loss of power, but it was more of a ‘clanking’ noise, quite a metallic ticking. Also it would start a bit rough, backfire or pop sometimes when starting.

Nice car. Nicely pitched video. I had a MK5 GT TSI and a 7.5 GTD. Both suffered badly with drumming or humming from rear wheels along with uneven tyre wear. Have you experienced that?

I’ve just bought a 997 C2S with Borescore so your vids have come in very handy. That said I think you jumped the gun too early in rebuilding the engine. The car had been scoped and came back clear, you didn’t have sooty tail pipes nor piston slap, all present in mine and it still drives fine, so I think more energy should have been spent in trying to understand where the oil was going because as you said, it wasn’t coming out of the exhaust. I’m glad it’s working out and I gleaned another tip from you for tiptronics: the double tap on the accelerator. Thanks :D

£5,000 to £6,000 is quite cheap to fix bore scoring. Did they redo the bores with aluminium sleeves and a Nikasil rather than Lokasil bore coating or did they just re-sleeve with steel liners? If steel liners then you are possibly looking at another engine rebuild in 10k to 20k miles time. My 987.1 3.4S Boxster had previously suffered bore scoring and been rebuilt with steel liners before I bought it. It took less than 10k miles before the liners moved and let coolant into the cylinders. The engine was then rebuilt properly by Hartech in Bolton, UK with Nikasil liners. Cost was closer to £10k though.

i get a puff of blue smoke on cold start. it ended up being the AOS. replaced that and now i get no smoke on startup.

Really enjoyed the lap mate. I know what you mean about watching out for others. Thats the main problem especially when it’s busy. People come up behind you going at such a pace it’s hard for them to deviate off their line and I was worried about being hit last year when I visited. Then you’ve got the insurance nightmare if you do get hit, who’s to blame and the return to the UK etc, oh and the barrier repairs and recovery. All this is going through your head unlike a UK trackday where you can buy track insurance at a reasonable price and know you are fully covered. Regardless it is such a buzz to drive it and earn the sticker for your car.

Porsche of America did s series on this. They talk in detail about how to prevent it and how to accommodate it if you already have some. Its not a death sentence - or doesnt have to be - if you catch it soon enough or perform the preventative steps they advise during the life of the car. Seems yours went too long without being diagnosed which is obviously unfortunate.
