I've got a 2012 GTI Mk6 as well. I had it since new. AIways serviced on time and have changed a set of tyres and a battery in its time of ownership. The car has 93,000km on it. Bullet proof! I bought my wife a 2020 Golf GTI TCR. Wow, what a car! Again, Bullet proof! VW makes very good cars. Like yourself, I also own a Porsche, but mine is a 1999 Carrera Coupe. I had for 9 years, and it's a pleasure to drive and no issues with it at all. Treat your cars with respect and they will look after you.

Totally agree with ur last sentence. Treat ur car well and it SHOULD look after u. I have a 2010 320d bm with 120k on clock, bought for £6k in 2015. Oil changed every 12 months. Along with filters. Its now on 208000 and apart from one 300pound all in job...I have never had any issues. Ever.
I also bought a 981 cayman in 2018 with 19k on clock. Again oil change every yr, with filers done every 2nd oil change. Apart from a (lengthy) garage visit which cost 400 quid at a specialist in burnley, so far so good. My brothers 15 plate 520d same story
Def have regular oil changes and u shud b ok I believe

I'm glad you've had such a great ownership experience with your GTI. Most issues on all cars are overblown by forums... Honestly if you read them too much you'd never buy any car at all period. Just get what you enjoy and keep a rainy day fund. I've found cars are so individual regardless of maintenance. My 2013 supposedly-bulletproof Honda Civic has needed a new air con condenser (expensive) and had a split EGR flexpipe need replacing (expensive) and wheel arch trim coming off on the motorway... This is despite an immaculate service history and clean MOTs. On the other hand my first proper car a 2005 E46 320D needed nothing except some corroded brake lines replaced. This is of course not including consumables like tyres, brakes, fluids etc. I owned both cars for about 60k miles each. If you had told me a Civic would have more go wrong than an old BMW I'd never believe you! I must say I wouldn't mind a nice MK 7.5 GTI next 😎

Owner of a 2010 MK6 GTI DSG with a touch over 17,000 miles. It has been excellent. Most people mod them and make them crazy fast. They have a hard time not running them hard and eventually, something goes bad.

That’s probably it. This is left alone and probably why it’s been so good. Looks like you have another 100k miles of fun to go then!

Wow I'm surprised and impressed! Ive had my 2007 MK5 2.0 TDI GT for 9 years, bought it with Full VW history and 60k miles, now it has 140k. Its had no expenses spared, service every 6 months or 5,000 miles. One owner before me and never been driven hard, mostly motorway miles. In my ownership its been nothing but hell and misery.
Its practically a new car now, we call it 'triggers broom'. Its had new Gearbox, Turbo, drive shafts, all suspension components replaced, EGR, headliner, 3 sets clutches and DMF's, various wiring looms, fuel pump, wheel arches repaired due to corrosion. I could go on, last month the fuel injectors all needed replacing and they are still playing up and its been in the garage 7 weeks... Totally different experience from yours!

    'bushings' (bushes?)
My first Golf was a 2010 Mk6 GT TSI 160 Twincharger (5dr manual) in Reflex Silver. Bought it new, £20k. One water pump change in 10 years of ownership, 45k miles. P/X'ed it for a 2018 Mk7.5 GTI Performance 245 DSG 7-spd (5dr) in Isaac Blue in 2020 with 13.5k miles for £20k. 6 years later I'm still driving the Mk7.5 - now on 36k miles - and no issues with it at all. Had it remapped to 312hp/476nm a few years ago. It's got full VW service history, had all the serviceable items done (fluids, LSD service, DSG service) and I've only probably lost £2k in value on it (I bought it a day before lockdown!). It has been the most reliable, highest equipped, most fun car (quickest) that I've owned and I can't see any reason to change. I have owned many fun cars (WRX, Evo IV, Integra Type R, Clio Williams, Prelude Type S) and nothing comes close to it on a day-to-day basis. Quite simply it's the only car you'll ever need. Insurance is reasonable, fuel consumption is reasonable (I drive it like a GTI should be driven), and tax is less than £200 a year.
Enjoyed the video Joe - keep up the good work 🖖

My 2018 GTI performance with 49k cost me £24.5k (ouch) late 2021 so you got in at the right time! Echo everything you say though, there's barely anything else I look at and think I'd rather have..

I got a base model golf 2012 2.5L here in the U.S. 90k miles. Only had slight electrical issue. Button driver assistance error. But other than that, shes smooth as butter. It handles wonderfully! Tight steering smooth in the corners. Hardly any body roll if any. Good on gas and just overall fun to drive.

I've got a 2011 170 tdi scirocco with a stage 1 tune while not quite as practical as a golf it's a still a good all rounder. It averages 55 to 60mpg it pulls extremely well and it looks great imo

188.000km's, bought it at 145.000. The garage gave it a new turbo because of the waste gate failing. At 180.000 I got new shocks and suspension arms (Bilstein B6) so it rides like new again. Perfect daily for me, practical, great gearbox (DSG) and with a stage 1 map fast enough. I do miss DAB radio (or CarPlay) but I refuse to get rid of the OEM RNS510 radio. Interior is rock solid, no scratches or big wear marks, even the leather holds up really well. I dare to say the interior is more sturdy and better quality then my 2017 C63 AMG.

I had a 2009 mk6 GTI, I went through what felt like a million PCV valves, and because of that also had three rear main seals replaced, it also ended up having a whole new head fitted not long before another rear main seal leak, at that point I kicked it into touch, it also drank oil like a grade A alcoholic downs vodka.

Adored my Mk6 GTI, mine was all original 3dr in grey, leather, nav, heated seats, 18” monzas, very classy. 100% agree with everything you say. Unfortunately the road tax is £305 now and getting steeper by the year. Although I’d prefer another mk6 over a 7. Much rarer car, and just as nice a drive.

Preach it, my friend! We’ve always had incredible success with VW’s. I’ve bought my last GTI, a manual MK8 40th AE, that I will keep until I die. Not one problem in the 18 months we’ve owned it. We had MK6 TDI’s which were incredible, 55-60 mpg, but the phony “diesel scandal” meant we had to sell those back to VW. I always liked the look of the MK6 as well. These Golf’s/GTI’s are incredible automobiles; just take care of them and they’ll give you the reliability of the Japanese brands. And ours never burned oil, either!

I’ve had my 2011 Golf wagon 118 TSI since new. Serviced annually, 162,000 km. It has needed the water pump replaced twice which is a major job as the engine must be lifted out. It recently had the timing chain replaced due to tension loss and rattle which is a common problem and again the engine comes out, so the mechanic advised water pump replacement again (#3) to avoid the next failure. It now has a whooshing sound on heavy acceleration such as going up a hill, so I’m worrying what now? It also had 3 recalls with major work for 2 in its early years. I’ve enjoyed the car, it definitely has a premium feel, but I certainly wouldn’t buy it now. I also have a 2019 Alltrack, bought at 32,000 km and so far no issues but it’s early days. But I do enjoy the lack of beeping, ridiculous safety statements (“obey the road rules”)and default stop-start in the Mk6!

@@paulcester5348the MK6 GTi is the worst version of all of them.
There is a reason why there were piston and ring, balance shafts, water pump, oil pump, cam bridge, hpfp, intake manifold, rear main seal, fuel injectors, timing belt and tensioner, front engine cover revisions. I know as I had to do them all in mine, and sometimes twice within a year.
Also had to replace all four wheel bearings, and still pending the radio that sounds terrible and the roof liner that is starting to sag off.
