Hurricane Helene cancelled the Yeti 100 mile endurance run on September 27, 2024 in Abingdon, Virginia. This video shows what we experienced during a 72-hour period around Damascus, as the unexpected intensity of the Category 4 hurricane swept through southwestern Virginia and created heartbreaking damage and destruction. We also describe how Race Director Jason Green and the Yeti volunteers, as well as town officials, local businesses and the communities, managed the Yeti 100 event under extremely difficult circumstances. Please keep everyone affected by this natural disaster in our prayers. Finally, we share our upcoming trail and ultra races, as well as a few surprises.

    Wow Reto. I'm glad you both are doing good and made it back safe. Many people didn't make it and that's so sad. My wife and I were driving to Mt Airy in Northern North Carolina and met up with some bad wind and rain but we stayed on the interstate. The news channels kept speaking of what happened in Western North Carolina but we didn't know the extent of the damage in that area until we were back home on Sunday. Prayers for all that were affected.

      Thanks Richard. I'm in CT, the Brewster high school track is across the state border, and sometimes we can't run on the local tracks because of football and soccer practice on the infield lol. The repeats are structured as lactate threshold, with a short recovery relative to the duration of the repeats. So for the target 25 min 5K repeats, 8 min rest is about 3:1 repeat to rest. Thanks for asking!

    Wow, congrats on your accomplishment of the significant VO2 increase! Awesome work. Your knowledge of running/training data is impressive. I need to take the time to study it more, as my only choice is to coach myself and develop my own training plans. Have you done any videos on your thoughts or past experiences with overtraining (if you've had those experiences, that is)? I don't know much about it but it seems like for many runners, there's a fine line between training well and overtraining. This is all just super interesting to me (former scientist and data nerd, lol). Best of luck with your upcoming race!!

      Hi, thank you for your kind comments. The workouts can be adapted, and it's the principles that are important. The weekly consistency. Structuring repeats from the short to the long. Running progressions. Learning from failure. And so on. Great question about overtraining and important topic. I'm surprised at the number of runners who are injured. And even more surprised at how many of them have repeat injuries. I've learned that we shouldn't expect a different outcome if we repeat the same mistakes 😂. Last year I created a video after running 7,700 miles over 4 years with zero injuries.     That's a massive improvement over such short time, but you also did a lot of work to get there. I think being able to handle such a large load is the main limiter for many who don't already have a high vo2max. For me the main limiter is that my life is too difficult and stressful through the winter season so I usually get sick for months, or spend all my energy just staying alive. When training falls away so does my mental health and I lose fitness and gain weight and have to start almost from scratch each year. Fitness gains start to be noticeable in the autumn only to be lost again over winter.

Agreed that the outcome is based on my training volume, plan and principles, and someone else's experience and outcome will be different. My objective is to share what I'm doing, both inputs and outcomes, as well as failures and lessons learned. Maybe someone will find it useful and be inspired. Winter is also a tough time for me to stay motivated and maintain physical, emotional / mental, and spiritual wellness. I hope you can make small improvements to maintain some level of well-being and not feel like you're starting over each spring. 🙏 Thank you again.

    I’ve followed your track workouts week by week and you’re very diligent and committed Reto. Lifting your VO2 Max to 55 is excellent, my highest is 53 but currently 47 with the much reduced training volume but it’s decent😊

    Mr vert, the technical part of the first day is only for the 100k right? The 50k is only the 2nd day of your trip and should be fairly fast… correct ?

    Hi Reto, what is it with the football coach complaining about you being filmed? Very strong on the mile repeats but I think going for 2 mile repeats sounds a bit extreme⚙️⚙️

      Hi Andy, I think he was trying to indirectly tell us we should not be doing a workout while he was having practice with his team. It's a public facility and laws and regulations allow the public to use the facility, except for scheduled major athletic events. Yeah, the 2-mile repeats are hard, last time I ran them was good. You'll see on Strava what I did yesterday. Don't worry I'm not pushing too hard lol.
