    Peter: When are you going to make a "Delta" clone like mine! Cherokee cheek piece...3-9x40 Banner 2 scope with original "ARMS" mount. I had to file the sear block anvil down a little under the lower to get full auto bolt carrier in it. I converted my Colt Match Sporter HBAR into a "Delta" clone. I put a QD sling mount under the lower portion of the handguard...as under the FSB is a no-go as it puts pressure on the barrel affecting accuracy.

    How did you remove the sear block ? Dremel and cutting discs ?

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! Large Dremel "reinforced" cutting wheels. Tape and cover anything that sparks or debris will hit so as not to damage the finish. Tape up the shaft and collet of the Dremel. Come down on the top and slowly angle to the sides until you can see the pins and then knock them out. You're not trying to grind out the entire sear block but only gain access to the side pins. Remove sear block with some taped up needle nose while slightly twisting. Then pull out the vertically installed roll pin at the inside bottom of receiver. Take your time and no more than two beers while doing it! Geissele makes a Colt MilSpec style large pin trigger that will work with the sear block still installed if you don't want to remove it. You will still have to run the Colt sear block bolt carrier though! Removing the sear block will allow you to run any type of BCG or large pin trigger.

      In my experience 1:8 Wylde works well for everything but there are many factors in addition to the twist rate. I have had great results with Criterion so far! My worst Criterion is a 16" Hybrid using a "rifle length" gas port. Shoots at about 1 MOA best I can tell with various ammunition types. My other Criterion HBAR's, Hybrid's and one Govt. profile are sub-MOA. I think at one time Criterion had a selection of twist rates but now with one exception all they offer is Wylde 1:8 twist for .223/5.56.

      @@momo-hm5ru Yes, a lot of manufacturers now are making them at "F" height but no longer marking them that way! My most recent build using a Brownells 16" SOCOM barrel is "F" height but not marked as such. They should make sure that this is part of their description and not buried somewhere! Windham Weaponry was famous for doing the opposite by putting standard A2's on their flat tops! They also had a shorter commercial spec detachable carry handle that would compensate for the incorrect shorter FSB. If you really want to get into a can of worms the LR308 DPMS is a case study in non-standardized parts from manufacturers. And then so many people call the DPMS pattern an AR10 which is completely incorrect and annoys the crap out of me! There are only five minor parts from the AR10 that are compatible with the DPMS and then three different versions of the AR10. The AR10A is a newer version of the older AR10B. Doesn't "B" come after "A"? Shouldn't it be AR10, AR10A and then AR10B? The firearms industry is often times jacked up beyond understanding!

    Hello, Pete. I think the A2 build with the H & R lower is my favorite of your 20" builds, although I really like your Mforgery, as you call it! I recently found ACC - Aeroshell 33MS mil spec Grease .25 oz. jar on Classic Firearms website for $3.99. Site says that's enough for approximately 5 builds using on the barrel nut, muzzle device and buffer tube. Isn't that what was replaced by the Aeroshell 64? I've been looking online at bench vises, also, Pete, and I'd like to ask for your opinion on them, if you don't mind. I've found a Bessey 4-1/2" light duty vise with 4-1/2" maximum jaw opening and weighs 11.3 lbs, for $54 and change. Next is a Wen 5" heavy duty vise with 4-1'2" max. jaw opening, weighing in at 23.7 lbs. Both of those are at Home Depot. The last two are Central Forge brand from Harbor Freight, the first is a 4-1/2" light duty with max. jaw opening of 4", for $36.99. Last is a 5" vise with max. opening of 5", weighing 21 lbs. for $59.99. What jaw opening and duty rating would you suggest, Pete? I'm looking for an old car body to place it under for best usage, as I saw you suggest! LOL! By the way, that's a nice '71 Camaro you're restoring. Great looking engine and parts you've replaced and changed. Muscle cars rule! Thanks, Pete and enjoy your evening!

      Hi! John, Aeroshell 33MS to my knowledge has been superseded by Aeroshell 64. The last time I investigated there is no shelf life for either one so keeping a lid on the stuff it should last a lifetime. I think for firearms it won't matter at all which one you use. My only recommendation would be to get a vice that is going to be good well beyond the clamping force required for 80ftlbs of barrel torque. When I built my FNFAL's I was well over 100ftlbs timing the barrels. My old Wilton vise weighs about 75lbs and I'm not sure what it's rated for but it's a beefy burrito! You can't have a flimsy bench either! Waiting for the weather to cool off a little more to finish the wiring on my "71" Camaro. Got a few hours worth left. Double check everything I have done, get fluids, a battery and then hire about five people to stand around with fire extinguishers before I turn the key! It's a real pleasure installing barrels under the Camaro! Lol! The older I get the more organized I was! The garage is a disaster!

A couple of years later I ended up with a "69" El Camino SS that was badged by Chevy as a 396 but it was actually a 400. Chevrolet had run out of passenger blocks in "69" and put truck blocks in them that were about 1/4" taller on the deck height. Can't remember if they used different pistons or slightly longer connecting rods? That one had a Turbo 400 and would shred the tires for blocks! Later on I put a large port 427 in it! Never heard that before? Bushmaster, Armalite, Olympic, Hesse, to name a few were all selling AR's in California back in the early 90's without any type sear block and never did incorporate any feature similar to what Colt did. It was never a legal requirement in any state and only Colt was doing this. I don't know where you read this but I'm sure it's disinformation. Although someone somewhere might be looking for a sear block lower they are generally not sought after and are more than likely worth much less then say an original Bushmaster of the same era. The upper separately may retain some value but Colt experts will recognize the shaved off bayonet mount and the shaved sear block BCG carrier and un-shrouded firing pin area. I also have an "89" Colt Sporter HBAR large trigger pin that is completely original and it still retains the sear block and shall remain completely original. The Sporter now has a spare sear block BCG that came out of this Match Target rifle in this video so there is a silver lining.

The tubing has a wall thickness of .120". Multiply that by two because we are dealing with a circle which becomes .240". Subtract .240" from .375" (3/8") OD which gives you an ID of .135". The 9/64" punch diameter comes in at about .140". The precision tubing and punch has a +/- tolerance which I don't remember but mine fit perfect using finger pressure. Assuming all material dimensions are perfect .140" minus .135" would require about a .005" punch diameter reduction. This would be .0025" per side (radius) of a circle. Mine fit without having to do anything so the tolerance planets were aligned in my case. Drill chuck and a file/abrasive on the punch should make quick work of any fitment issues.

    Good afternoon, Pete! Good information on the trap doors. You have excellent observation skills, and I'm amazed at the attention to detail you exhibit. Fine looking rifles. I liked your story of buying your first AR, the Colt I see there now. Back in '89, in California, just before the ban, and you finding it, calling the store, his stating only 2 were left, you ask him to hold one for you, and you were on your way. And the 2-week waiting period after purchasing before taking ownership! You'd think I watched your videos repeatedly or something! LOL! I received an email from Gunbroker advertising an auction Saturday. I'd never looked at their site much, but I clicked on an option of theirs, "Gun Parts", then "AR Parts". The first page, second item, was an A2 rear sight installation tool showing the latest bid as $7.75, with only 4-5 minutes left to bid. I hurried to set up an account, log in, and all that stuff. By the time I got all that done, I had missed out by 2 minutes! Dang thing sold for $8.05. It was still in the original packaging! I was about sick over that, but what the heck! LOL! I'd seen you install one using a small screwdriver instead and you said your USMC M16A2 Technical Manual 1984 edition gave that tip to you. I think it was Margret Thatcher the prime minister of Great Britain being given credit for saying "The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money to spend!". Fulton Armory sells an A2 rear sight install tool that is affordable. I have never used it but I don't see why it wouldn't work well? I make sure I have sufficient electrical tape on the screwdriver so that just the very edge of the blade is exposed. I tap the pin in ahead of time so that it just catches the edge of the spring. I crank the sight slot down just enough for that to happen so I do not have to compress the spring very much making sure the pin will enter the sight slot. I carefully depress the spring with the screwdriver and get the pin started over the nearest coil. Then repeat tapping the pin all the way through. I've been lucky four times now with no marring or scratches. It's like juggling feathers in a hurricane though!

    You are correct, that Fulton Armory stock has an A1 trap door and it's butt plate is one of the NOS surplus 90s era A2 butt plates that they are selling on their website. The latch on the A1 trap doors is meant to be opened with a bullet tip or even a flat blade screwdriver (save you fingers on those 😉). However, a couple years back I ordered 2 Fulton Armory A2 stocks. They came with refinished A1 trap doors and had silver (guessing nickel) finished latches which was kind of odd. Also, the butt plates were the Windham type with the generous bevel at the bottom of the door opening cutout that's meant to interface with the thick Windham plastic trap doors. The A1 trap doors rattled pretty badly on those due to the bevel, so I paired the A1 doors with A1 butt plates and put them into storage.

      Some will disagree but I don't think an adjustable gas block is optional for a 308/7.62 AR type platform. The variation in ammunition performance is immense. If you want to run any type of ammunition under any type of environmental, adverse conditions or especially when suppressed then having one is a huge benefit! The RifleSpeed is a little pricey but I think it's the best on the market right now. The two LR308's that I put together might be classified as a cross between a "DMR" or a "Battle Rifle" depending on what optic is sitting on top? I did separate playlist's on the channel for each rifle but in the end went with an A5 buffer (7.750" tube), full size Carbine 8.5oz buffers from Heavy Buffers.com with 308 rifle length springs for both of them. This was with 18.6oz BCG's using 18" rifle length gas system barrels and the Wilson Combat gas ports drilled to .092" from .088". Using the small RifleSpeed plunger .887" put me right in the middle of the gas adjustment range of setting #6 for hotter 308 and setting #8 for lower powered 7.62 NATO out of a possible range of 12 settings.

So plenty of adjustment for more or less gas as I have things right in the middle. I'm using the shortest plunger from RifleSpeed right now and could turn the gas down a lot more by using a larger plunger if that were necessary, but the way things are I don't think I would ever have to? Most of the testing was done in 20-40F temperatures. I did a couple of final testing videos in the playlist that I created for each rifle.

    Is there an advantage to using a headspace gauge (like LE wilsons w/ their depth micrometer) over a datum line comparator (SAC has datum inserts)... both followed by an ammo checker (like Sheridan's)? I read the sheridan will contact the length of the shoulder, simulating a real chamber. While a headspace gauge will contact the shoulder at a particular point, but I'm not sure if that's the datum point itself.. I'm also looking at the SAC comparator set. It has inserts reamed like a chamber for headspace (like Sheridan's), but also has inserts for ogive and even some for datum lines - like .330, .350, etc. I'm wondering if a proper datum line comparator insert on calipers basically replaces the headspace gauge + depth mic anyway... I have only reloaded to SAAMI specs and have not delved into precision loading yet. So much involved with loading for a specific rifle and chamber dimension. I generally try for about a .002" neck tension and minimum SAAMI specs with maybe a very slight shoulder bump when full length sizing. Other than that bullet and powder types usually staying under max charge weights. For rifle I'm always loading for a semi-auto platform usually an AR which will never fully compete with a precision bolt action for accuracy. Depending on my estimation of the condition of fired brass I do have small base dies for .223/5.56mm and 308/7.62 NATO. The chambers on my FNFAL's as far as I can tell are loose enough to where my small base dies would never be needed. Loading for the sole purpose of precision and competition would be a whole new world for me! If I were to go down that road some of the types of equipment and measuring tools you're describing would be a requirement. I would also want a decent chronograph. One of the things that never gets talked about in all of the reloading videos I've watched is temperature and air density. Not sure how you would load around a lot of these external factors ahead of time but I guess you just go after what you can. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Have all three of the newer ones working now! I have two more older WC's to look at but I think that they are okay. Going to check them anyway! For TDP's go to Gatalog.com. Click on "Technical Data Packages". You will be redirected to Odysee. Click on "Content". M4/M4A1 thumbnail should populate at the upper left of the page. The M16 TDP's are at the bottom right of the page. They are in PDF format so you should have no problem down loading them to your computer.

    Another beautiful rifle, Pete! I really like the handguards you have on it. I think I like those better than the quad rails everyone puts on the A4. I'd guess they're lighter, also. You have the nicest collection of AR's I've seen, and professionally built by a true master of his craft! Thanks for another fine exhibition, Pete! Also, thank you for the recent dimensions on the tubing for the carry handle to FSP alignment tool. 13" on the 1/2' outside tubing, 10" on the 3/8" inner tubing, along with a 9/64" center locating punch. I saw the sanding of two sides of the outer piece you did on your video, so it would fit inside tighter carry handles, which you opted for aluminum vs. the 4130 high carbon steel used on the inner tube. It's a shame the outer piece is 13" because the tubing is sold in 1', 3' and 6' pieces, and is quite expensive, especially the aluminum tubing. As an optimist would reason, buying a 3' section for inner and outer tubing would enable one to build two complete tools, with only the addition of an extra 9/64" punch costing only $6.68 more! This I could give to a friend as a Christmas present, if only I had a friend! Just kidding on that! Thanks again, Pete, and enjoy your weekend!

      @peteregger7928 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks John! I do remember having to buy the outer tubing in the longer length for 13". I'm not sure but you may be able to get away with 12" on both the outer and inner? I must have had some reason for 13" on the outer tubing. I may have been wanting to get as much support as possible when extended for rifle length. I too have enough left over for an additional tool. The Midwest two piece drop in hand guard on this rifle weighs within a half ounce of the MilSpec A2 round hand guards! I remember being surprised by that! I thought for sure the Midwest would be heavier!

    2:29 it is not a cage code as far as I know. All of the cage codes I have ever seen have both numbers and letters, including my own employeer's cage code. If it was, it's very likely that it would be the company who manufactured it for Colt under subcontract for their .gov contract. At least that's how we package our parts for other companies that have a .gov contract

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Most cage codes are numbers only although some have letters mixed in. Colt cage code for example is 13629. The number on the packaging may not be a cage code although it did show up as a government contractor that has a surplus category. APEX also lists the actual Colt P/N on their site along with the picture. The door being NOS Colt may pre-date cage code markings as that is a more recent thing for individual parts and components for firearms especially for Colt. When I was in the military the primary identification besides the actual P/N was an NSN that would usually lead to multiple manufacturers for the same part. Then later on in my career individual parts were listed by cage code preference for a woman or minority owned business. As the end user we didn't care who owned the business and through experience would order the parts we knew actually worked or were going to be reliable. Who made these particular doors for Colt or as a USGI supplier? I have no idea. I think I may dig deeper and contact APEX to see if Colt or whoever made the part. Trying to nail down an actual manufacturer these days is not an easy task for those of us outsiders. Thanks for the comment and more exploration out of curiosity on my part forthcoming.

    • @ryanthede4689
      @ryanthede4689 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @peteregger7928 APEX may not even know. Most contracts in manufacturing include a non-disclosure agreement, so it's not necessarily information that Colt would give out

    Interesting that the aluminum Colt trap doors fit without rattle for you on those Windham A2 butt plates. I've tried the aluminum trap doors in both the modern Windham and modern Colt A2 butt plates and they were rattle traps. I found that the NOS 90s era A2 butt plates that are available from AR15Sport and Fulton Armory were what I needed to fit right with the aluminum trap doors that I have. As far as the plastic trap doors go, the Windham ones are actually my preference. The latch spring tension on Colt's plastic trap doors makes them nearly impossible to open with your fingers alone most of the time. Also, you are right on when you say that the doors are matched to the butt plates. Interchangeability and backwards compatibility were obviously not a consideration here.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The latch tension on the plastic Windham's are preferable. The NOS all metal Colt doors from APEX that I just installed required more effort but not bad. I have older "all original" Colts from the early 90's that use the type of latch that does not have the protruding tab with no back cut and those are brutal! After installing the remaining APEX Colt doors on my other two Windham butt plates one was snug like the one showcased in this video. The last one was a little loose but not enough to make any noise and still better than what I started with. The Fulton Armory metal door A2 butt stocks that I have been using recently on my other builds look to have doors and latches used for the late A1's or very early A2 butt plates but just guessing on this one. The latches on those doors do not have the protruding tab but do have the slight back cut to help rip your finger nail off! The Fulton's are all snug fitting and rattle free. The whole thing to start with is a poor design! Throw in different variations of doors, latches, materials and butt plates... I got lucky!

    My grandmother would call that gun heinz fifty seven. I had to go look at my A2 stocks and one of mine is plastic yuck I noticed I can open the plastic one with my finger nail not the metal one you need something.

      Ha! Ha! I have very few rifles where even half the parts are from the same place! Lol! The original plastic latches/doors on the Windham's were easier to operate than these metal NOS Colt doors. The worst are my "all original" Colt rifles and you will rip your fingernail off on those! Brutal!

      @@Allenmar73 Thanks Allen! Even using the same OEM for parts doesn't mean much anymore other than maybe the QC they perform before rebranding with their own name.
