H2 worked the best! Consistent ejection pattern and greatly reduced cartridge rim wear! With adverse conditions or weaker ammunition it should still run great!
I have a very similar set up as your rifle..It was over gassed and the extractor had way too much tension..I replaced the gas tube with a EZTUNE Gas Tube and removed the O ring.. It now runs perfectly..I have never had much luck using heavier buffers on an over gassed rifle..
I have put together quite a few carbines over the years and this was the first one that needed additional tuning! Not sure what the gas port size was on the Brownells barrel as it already had the FSB installed but they really wanted to make sure it was getting some gas! I got it reliable at 2:30-3:00 more towards 3:00 which I guess for a carbine gas system isn't too bad. Brownells claims that their barrels are made to USGI spec by a military contractor and proof round tested. Maybe that's why the gas port is the size that it is? Leaves some operating room for weak ammunition, cold weather or a dirty dry action. I may try a different buffer spring in the future but for now I think it's good enough? Looks pretty much sorted. I would pull the O-ring out and replace the extractor spring with a Colt “gold” spring and spring insert. Don’t know that you would see much (if any) change. There does seem to be a consensus that the Colt spring is superior to anything else out there.
Really enjoy watching you fine tune on your builds. You mentioned possibly trying stiffer buffer spring and working your way up buffers you have. Wonder if in addition a different extractor spring will have any effect on ejection pattern? I'm pretty sure the BCM kits are made by SprinCo, 4 or 5 coil. You might have done that already, I forget. Anyway, that's a fine franken rifle with quality parts. I'm sure you'll get her like you want.
Thanks Allen! I have a bunch of extra Sprinco stuff so I've decided to start off with changing some things around on the bolt! I just got another WC BCG delivered about an hour ago so I'll head space it to this carbine and see what happens. This new one just received does not have the o-ring installed but in a separate package. I've had good luck with WC so far but maybe my luck has ran out on this one. The more I think about what's happening the more I think something is going on with the ejector although it feels smooth and seems to have good compression. More testing to come! I'll get to the bottom of it!
4:22 I was gonna say to pull the handgaurd and slowly squeeze the gas tube until the gas flow is just right. Use ViceGrips, because you can make fine adjustments to the clamping force by slowly screwing in that knurled bolt.
Good job, Pete. 👍 FWIW, when I build a carbine length AR, I just start with an H2. As the old saying goes: "May as well start out with what you'll end up with". I don't claim to have the most extensive experience with the AR platform, but in my experience, the H2 has been what worked the best. The marks on the casings (or lack thereof) are even more indicative that the H2 is the best in your rifle. One thing I will say, is that the ejector seemed to be just puking out some of the cases. ARs should fling that brass. Could be a burr on the ejector? Some junk in the ejector tunnel? Weak spring? 🤷♂ WC makes quality parts, so it should be good. On the other hand, you said that seemed to clear up, so maybe it just needed a few rounds to bring it in line. Enjoy your rifle! PS: I finally got my Matech sight for my M4A1 build off the USPS merry-go-round and tested it out Tuesday. Worked great! I did have to turn the front sight down 3 clicks from the zero with the carry handle. Seems like the Matech is a bit taller than even the carry handle. It is an "F" marked FSB and I used the "300" setting for zeroing, per the instructions for a carbine.🤷♂
Thanks Gary! Glad you finally got the MATECH! If I remember it's .007" per click on the front sight so your adjustment was around .021". Only half way down from the distance difference of an "F" vs STD. I checked the ejector prior to the first test and just got done checking it again and it feels okay when depressing it with a screwdriver. Smooth and seems to have about the same tension compared to another BCG that I have laying around. My screwdriver test is by no means definitive. I may change out the spring anyway to rule it out. The H2 got it from about 1:00 o'clock when using the STD carbine to about 3:00 so that did make a difference with the brass looking much better! Still need to figure out some of the lingering inconsistency. Maybe just needs more break-in?
@@peteregger7928 I would say just shoot the rifle for accuracy at range now and keep an eye on the ejection. Best news...it functions well, so you built it right. I was just a little surprised I had to depress the front sight post 3 clicks with the Matech. If anything, it seemed that the sight post was lower than the carry handle aperture...but my eyes are not well calibrated. It zeroed fine. Now I will take it out to the 300 yard steel gong range and see how it does. I live in Florida, so we have a similar weather situation, I need to get my shooting done early or it gets to be a tropical sauna by 9:00 AM and I sure can't expect the best results when I am swimming around in my clothes. In winter, the weather is perfect and I can spend hours and hours at the range any time of day.

Big lizards fall out of the trees when it gets cold.🤣 But the winter actually is great, perfect weather for outdoor stuff. That's when I do all my fishing and shooting.

Swap a different bolt with same Bolt Carrier in the rifle. Sometimes it's the ejector spring and extractor combination that doesn't work well together. I will have a video on this as this solved the same issue for me. I also start at H2 for carbine system. Wilson Combat is garbage for Ar's in my opinion. Maybe you have a different experience. They use cheap springs and QC is questionable at best. Love the look of the gun. Good Luck.
Thanks Practical! I had some minor issues with WC's 308 barrels in the past! Gas ports full of debris and the hole not cleanly drilled on the inside. Had to use a cleaning rod to work the left overs back and forth until they came off the edge. This is my 4th WC BCG and prior ones have been working fine but maybe I finally found a bad one! Noticed you haven't loaded any videos for a good while now! Hope all is well!
@@peteregger7928 I'm going to second the bolt/ejector/extractor/springs. I have a SRC bcg that came with the cheapest springs I've seen and did the same dribbling ejection until I resprung it with quality springs. Also check the bolt face diameter to see if it is tight on the case heads.
I have a very similar carbine I assembled on a PSA M4A1 lower, except with a govt profile barrel. I was having the same issue with 1:00 ejection consistently. I started with a Sprinco xx-heavy (orange)buffer spring and I’m now getting 3:30 consistently. And that’s with my own hand loaded 55,62,77g ammo which is all loaded HOT (over max charges). I thought I’d have to switch out my buffer to at least an H1, but the spring fixed it completely.
I should have it back out soon! I did a more recent video where I think I have found the issue. The WC ejector spring was out of spec. It only had 24 coils instead of the correct 27. You can get crazy with the buffer spring but I have had great results with sprinco green bought when on sale. And I have adjustable gas blocks on every build. If it f's up and gets me killed, so be it. But pretty happy with superlative arms and riflespeed also. But need a higher round count on riflespeed blocks. Finally, compensators. Have them on everything but guns with cans. I do have an a2 or two but just to remind me that I like comp's.
I ended up running A5/Carbine/Rifle Length Springs from HeavyBuffers.com on my recent LR308 builds along with the RifleSpeeds. Significant reduction in recoil and now 100% reliable. I haven't tried an A5 on any of my AR15/CAR15 builds but have always been curious as to the benefit? Sounds like you have a nice collection!
@@peteregger7928 i've been doing this for a while now. I haven't played in the "cloning" sandbox and don't see that happening for me. I try to improve on milspec and all the military's rules/reg's that go along with that. And most military guns are made to be grunt proof, of which I was one. So I've more focused on dialing in for reliability AND shootability. I err on the side of reliability but tune my guns down to run smooth. Comps are loud but i shoot/train in my own private national forest so nobody to complain. I run suppressors for specific platforms, home def. bump in the night, indoor shooting w/out ear pro - 300blk subs (handloads summer/winter), 9mm (handloads summer/winter) and some .22lr. Have to say, .22lr is the absolute king. Yeah, I know all the ft.lb./stopping power junkies are losing it. But i wouldn't want to get hit with even one never mind 25. And my wife loves it. For 5.56 I haven't pulled the trigger on a can. Even with the best suppressor available, if you shoot 5.56 indoors without earpro you'll know it. And I have enough hearing damage already. If my, already mentioned, suppressed's somehow don't get the indoor job done, well so be it. I like my odds though. Having said that, I think I may have one standard receiver extension in my inventory. A5 is the way to go. I think it's about 3/4" longer than standard and you get a rifle length spring, much smoother. As I said in previous comments, I run adjustable gas blocks. Superlative Arms is my fav to date. I run them all on bypass. I do like the riflespeed for easy adjustment and have it on one build but don't have enough rounds through it yet. So far 100% reliability. One thing I'm toying with now is going back to standard colt handguards with double heat shields. If you shoot/train like you mean it then you know how quick your support hand will get smoked, even with shooters gloves. We'll see we're that goes. I'm definitely not going back to old school handguards across my inventory but something different to play with on one or two. It means finding functional mounting options for lights, etc. Anyways, you can fiddle f*ck yourself into craziness with tuning. I have found that I just want tuned to my environmental needs. No shoveling mud on/in the gun, running them over with trucks, etc. Military days are behind me now it's just for what's next domestically. 🤔🤫🫣
@@peteregger7928 I've got one of those JP FSGB's. It's ears are much wider than the standard sight and make for an unfamiliar sight picture. The quality is excellent and the adjustment is a good system. The clamps and bolts are solid and hold tight and it has a dimple for drilling and installing a roll pin for further retention. Overall, it's high quality and effective but quite different than the standard sight/picture.
If u plan on going to springco stuff try the blue and green I really think the rifle needs to be broke in maybe with cheap 223 psi stuff then make adjustments/parts changes once it has had couple hundred rounds throught it Just my opinion

Thanks John! Started out wanting to use mostly Colt but found out quick that wasn't going to happen! I just used what I could find that I thought might be decent parts and this is the Frankenstein that I ended up with! Lol! I think it's dialed in now with enough left over for weak ammunition, cold weather or other adverse conditions. Although I would rather have something that works from the start I do enjoy figuring out what the show stoppers are. I can honestly say it's always parts or parts combinations that should have worked in the first place! It is impossible for me to understand what is going on in this country and society. Doesn't just seem to be here either! A lot of insanity on a global level! Our founding fathers were very intelligent to give us the means!

JP makes an adjustable front sight base gas-block it just doesn’t have a bayonet lug.
