A storage unit is very important for separating your business from time with family home and leisure.
I try to provide the customer service I'd like to receive. For the one category I started with before branching out, I include a very short hand-written thank you note. Nothing fancy. It has surprised me how many people will mention that in their feedback. They are so surprised and appreciative. After listening to you all, I may start doing it for other categories.
Well done guys… thanks for taking the time to entertain us ❤
FedEx has been cheaper for me almost every time lately over UPS. I'm not paying UPS an extra $5 and every time I fight an overs charge with FedEx, I win
When I measure for FedEx, I don't just measure box corner to box corner. Sometimes the box might be a little bloated in the middle so I kind of do a visual site down the side of the box and if it's protruding a little bit I might add an extra inch, because FedEx puts those things on conveyor belts and they get scanned.
I love Seller Ledger - very easy to keep track of inventory and inventory cost.
Although I don’t live in Canada, I do ship there often. Sales have slowed down since the strike. The few I have gotten I have shipped UPS.
I haven’t used FedEx in 6 months. Sellers have been complaining in Facebook groups about charges for awhile. I now avoid using them.

Confused--is fedex not liking any poly bags or box in a bag…….???
Josh John and Beard. I build a spreadsheet for tracking individual sales, individual sales profit, lot sales, lot profit, daily profit, running yearly profit, running inventory value, expenses and quite a bit more. It also will give you a net zero number for each item when you enter the cost to assist in pricing. It's a extremely handy and it has helped my business greatly. If you buy large lots it is especially powerful. If you would like a copy let me know and I will email it to josh
There is also a list format calculator where you can plug in hundreds of items and anticipated sell price and it will factor fees and shipping and your desired margin and give you an estimated buy cost for that lot. I could not buy large lots without it at this point. The math is very accurate and it can be trusted even with large 5 figure buys.
I fell like summer slowdowns started early.
Enjoying replay ❤
Google sheets is free. Watch a TH-cam video and you can track all the info you want. Super easy.
I answer the holiday questions by saying “I will ship it ASAP, but when it’s in the postal system, it’s out of my hands.”
I find it shocking that most resellers don't know anything about dimensional weight shipping...ANYTIME you use UPS or FedEx on a package larger than a cubic foot you MUST use their dimensional weight calculators (yes the weights will differ on the same package because they use different calculations). if you put in the correct dimensional weight on eBay then you will pay the correct amount. eBay WARNS you about this when printing a label, most/all just ignore it then cry like babies when they get hit with fees later. And many will say they only use pirate ship in these situations, just another warning, you can and will get hit with charges later there also.
I got whacked once on eBay by Fed Ex. Fool me once.
Another good one! 👏👏👏
As a former manager at FedEx, we had incentives to re weigh and re dim packages for additional revenue
This is high light of my Saturdays. Love to listen and list.
I love listening to you three while I take photos and complete my listings. By far the best informative reselling podcast. Thanks again guys for getting me through my workday!
On eBay you can't enter a poly mailer so when you put in Dimensions FedEx thinks you're giving them a box John just explained it you did not enter it correctly on eBay because you can't, ebay software you put in measurements you're saying it's a box
As Scott would say is that an eBay problem or a me problem
Fedex socks! 3 package stolen
“We’re going to die guys” profound wisdom from the Canadian guy.
😂
Have you looked at Flipwise?
FedEx, UPS, Amazon, ebay fees fees fees. Free market at work. 😜
Jon you did a pretty god job with this years resolution (keep things positive). Here’s the resolution you should make for 25: Set boundaries w your friends. They’re coming to the most popular vacation destination outside of Disney, but you’re not on vacation. “Hey, glad you’re excited. I am for you too! However I may not be able to respond to you right away during normal business hours.” Or something like that I’m not a writer.
I think you’re right I tend to turn Q4 into a mini vacation every year because others are coming out here
Ebay has nothing to do with fedex and ups upcharges. They charge you per the rate tables that are provided by the carriers. The issue falls squarely on fedex in Scott's case.
In my opinion - EVERYBODY that ships in a polybag SHOULD be charged 100.00 extra! That's so Ghetto shipping like that! I buy a LOT on eBay, and whenever anybody ships an item to me in a polybag, it's the Last time I do business with them! In fact, I'm going to start leaving Negative feedback when they do. I've been selling on eBay for 27 years, and I Never ship in a sack/bag! - that's one of the reasons I have 100% FB, Perfect metrics and make 10- 14K per month partime as I ship Everything in New boxes. I don't want to hear about how it saves money in shipping, blah blah blah, it just looks Trailer Trashish, plus most items come Smashed, bent, folded, and just flat out destroyed! If you know how to source, you can afford to ship in a box - just sayin'!
Are you saying for all items? It’s kind of harsh that you think?
@ProfitPlaybookPodcast Yes, in my opinion, it's for any item, but what do I know? I just hate getting something in a sack - I know they're called polybage, but I call those people " Sack Shippers"
Awesome show. Looking forward to number 99 next week
I just got hit this morning with a $20 upcharge on a bat and a $80 up charge on a pitching wedge!!! both UPS. I quit using FedEx bc of this happening too much. They hava the PW 38x6x6 2lbs box at 72lbs????? (dimensionally) EIGHTY!! for s 36" 1 lb golf club!!
did you use a 6x6 box? because for UPS and FEDEX even if it is 1/8" over you must say 7". Most boxes measure bigger than their quoted dimensions. Then when they charge overages it completely negates ebay's discount which I have seen over 70% before. So if your package is bigger than you say, you pay the overage plus that 70%. You pay the difference between what you paid and RETAIL.
@Jorejaha-c7h You're correct but I forgot (wish I could add a screenshot) but this box was a curtain rod box I kept for shipping. It was only 6×2.5 (x 38" long). Ebay told me it was logged by UPS as a 20"x56"x12" box (72lbs dimensionally) ....for a 35.5" pitching wedge??? I've beening doing this off and on since 2001, so I know how to pack properly
I look forward to this pod every Saturday.
Love to hear it!
Omg I did not know that about fed ex and poly bags. Thanks for the info
You're not crazy at all beard! They have been doing this to online sellers all over the place because they know us as small individual business sellers we won't and can't do anything about it. I also dont trust ups for this same issue they can lie and over charge you on any package kowing the fight is pretty much impossible.
Whatever the date usps says that year for final shipment of priority is the date I put my store on vacation. I still allow sales and will ship orders out. I do this to lower the expectation of customer that it will arrive in time and also I test different things each year to jump start out of vacation mode for when I really am gone during summer cruises and trips.
We a couple feet deep already ❄️, ✌🏻💚🙏🏻 I comment like it's a live 😅
DO NOT get me started about Fed Ex, omg maybe they are fine in the cities, everywhere else they suck, a waste of time, waste of money. Pay extra and use USPS OR UPS. Boycott FEDEX 👎🏼👎🏼
Fed ex is the only service I’ve had packages stolen. I only use it as a last resort
✌🏻💚✌🏻💚🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I message thanks when i get sale and let them know when i plan to ship. Then when it ships, a message "it's on its way". I include a business card that I sign, with printed thanks, ebay contact address, let know appreciate feedback. Abt 75% time I get thanks or thumbs up with messages I send that I got order and message when it ships. Costs me about 25cents per card.
Does anyone else use flipwise? I love it for tracking my Ebay sales
Jon could put free chocolates in with every toilet seat 🫣
Melted ones…
I like Josh’s ideas or suggestions. I often put an extra item in the box such as a little extra purse, etc if I sell a doll or a pretty bow around the package if it is jewelry, etc. pretty Thanks Yous are great. Customers love it and often leave a positive comment. Very good podcast.❤
Josh, the problem with your example is many ebay businesses are not really businesses, they are self created jobs. You have to run a niche store for most of those tactics to work (I run a niche shmtore and agree with many of your ideas) but beard and jon run such different stores I don't think many of your ideas apply to sellers like that. Hopefully they can niche down...I think it will make the game much easier :)
The Canadian genius shines like a light here. Josh, get a job with eBay. You are not a reseller. " Chocolates with your purchase" - bro, you need to work for a boss with that mentality
I always contact buyers thanking them for their purchase and offer free shipping on anything added to their order as long as they have a few hrs before shipment. And I will usually respond to messages and offers within the hour.
Josh I just wanted to let you know I have enjoyed listening to your journey to become a specialty niche seller. I started off on eBay over 25 years ago only selling in one tiny tiny collectibles niche and I've never even considered adding anything else. When you can grow your hobby into a successful reselling business that's what you described as waking up every day ready to go to work. I get out to my warehouse every chance I can (when my wife allows on weekends) to work on listing and organizing more stuff. When you get deeper into your journey consider a few things that have really made the difference for me in my niche including an email newsletter, Facebook Group and attending in person events. Some niches are so small nobody would assume you can build a 6-figure reselling business around it but I am here to tell you it's possible (but a long journey). So good luck and of course to John and Scott ya'll keep chopping - good content.
Thank you so much for the words of encouragement Santee Swapper! I appreciate you!
Used to be a "nice" seller send notes all that stuff, ended up getting more returns and stupid questions. Now I just take a let sleeping dogs lie approach. Will answer questions if an issue arises other than that basically just send the items quickly and that's it.
Awesome video guys
you go to choose are you a youtuber or a reseller well you can do both but i think there has to be some sort of definition there is a lot of youtubers that make out they make 6 fiqures a day etc and absolulty cant back it up and then you got ones in it for money selling fake how to do ebay courses and then you have someone like jon that his you tube is more like a guy documenting his journey in reselling and whats happening to him and then does the lives where people in chat sort of steer the topic of the lives much more interactive and with jon hes not trying to sell you anything not trying to sell you a course etc you just being there watching is enough he is a reseller like you n me that is just using youtube to document his journey thats the best way to do both enough said and as for what beartd said hes not there to run your business hes right on the money there you are responsisble for your own business and should not take anything as gospal but free to run with ideas and try things you might not of thought of what works for one might not work for you and theres josh since hes made the choice to steer his business in the direction hes going i have not seen somone more focused and has the drive and determination to see it through but at the same time still come up with new ideas
Great show!
