This has to be the best episode i have ever seen on your show, actually its the best episode i have ever seen on any reselling channel. Hats off to you all for having this amazing guest. literally sitting here taking notes
Same, I've been listening in the car and will listen again when I can take notes. After I sheepishly jump on my computer and turn off 10% promoted listings for everything in my store
This was amazing in SO many ways! I had to show my husband what I was watching to show him the intense listening going on by the three of you as Bert talked. I felt the same! I was listening to every word as well! And I will be watching this again. Once will not be enough. I have subscribed. Please send notification when Bert is back on! I agree with others. Hands down the most informative, easy to listen to, youtube video I have ever watched pertaining to eBay selling. Great job!
If I listened to this as a new seller, It would be so far over my head, I would just give up selling entirely! A wealth of information here! One of the most useful videos I've ever heard about eBay selling ... out of thousands! Thanks Jon and Jenna and everyone.
So a question I would have is: for unique item sellers, does the conversion rate of your account matter? Or just the conversion rate of individual listings with multi quantity? Sounds like he’s saying that for unique item sellers the best thing we can do is end/sell similar to get the new item boost in search
Brett Bassett for the win! I’ve watched all his content before this, and it’s always packed with valuable insights. You definitely have to be pretty dedicated (maybe even a bit obsessed) with eBay to stick around after he reveals the results within the first few minutes. 😅 Quick question, though-does the time of day you list or stay active on the site impact sales? I’m curious if listing when more users are online could improve your conversion rate with that initial visibility boost. We used to work on eBay during the day and saw most of our sales then, but now that we list mainly between midnight and 6 AM, I’ve noticed our sales increased during those hours, it would make sense for eBay to match active customers with active sellers. Love watching you guys talk about the ins and outs of eBay. This was a fantastic episode!”.
I was a little surprised the amount of importance that Bert placed on service metrics. And that if you promote at a high level that you will get a lot of impressions which could hurt your sell through rate.
Also thinking that with some of things he stated then ebay in hurting sellers stores with Non-search impressions which mine is 83.2%. Putting items in front of those who will probably not turn into conversion...just thinking outloud.
not all impresions are created equal, if you end up getting bad impressions through promoting, are you paying to devalue your own items? (outside of the actual value you are losing) food for thought
Great episode! Can you please ask him his perspective on the requirement to list daily to generate sales? I'm in the used clothing category and noticed my sales drop dramatically on days I don't list or list less than usual. Thanks.
This was an amazing interview. The more times I listened, the more I learned. After my third time through, as Bert was talking about conversion rate, I wondered then why does eBay put so much noise on our individual pages? i.e. more like this, Inspired by your recent views, frequently bought together, Buyers also viewed, similar customers also bought, explore more options, you may also like (this is not an exaggeration - 7 different ways to click off your item.) If conversion is such a priority, then why allow the buyer so many ways to click off my page? Let me sink my own ship - I can understand two or three of the examples above, but 7?
Hi Guys, Great show. The Best on how Ebay works. Question to ask your Guest next time. He said he did not like auctions. I like to really know why. I tried them a few times, but they never worked for me. Thanks, and All The Best.
He confirmed an important detail: "sell similar" gives a temporary boost that relisting does not. My question is this: When selling similar, how much do you have to change the listing for eBay to recognize it as a new listing? Can you leave the old photos? Can you crop or otherwise edit the old photos? Or will AI pick up that it's the same item?
A counter thought is that, even if AI picks up on the old photos, they may think you acquired the same exact item again and were just being lazy by reusing photos. This happens all the time with NWT items, where there is no material difference or reason to take a new set of photos. So I find it hard to believe reusing photos in itself will disqualify a listing as new in the eyes of AI. Just my 2 cents
Wonderful information. This makes me wonder, EBay may actually be putting effort into becoming a better more relevant platform, but with this effort why are they not communicating the standards and expectations with their sellers? It’s like having your perfectly designed house, bring in a contractor to build your perfectly designed house, but not giving them the design plans🤔
How often should you sell similar on items? Why do drafts not send an email that the item was listed? This also happens with sell similar? Do they not count as newly listed items? Does it hurt my store. Also as soon as I hit 100 dollars in sales the sales stop why? I am top rated plus 100 % feedback
I’ve wondered this too, Sarah. When I list from drafts, 95% of the time I do not get an email that the item has been listed. I’m not sure he could answer this, because it is a technical issue that I first noticed 2 years ago or so.
Question: Conversion Rate seems to be particularly important. I have often heard 1.0, but where does an attractive CR really start for ebay, actually at 1.0?
It use to be that the actual address was banned. Period. So if your roommate or a previous tenant was suspended on eBay, you're account would also be limited or suspended, too. You could not open an account using any of the same info, address, name, store name, ip address, even your bank or paypal account. Might still be like that.
Question: Private seller vs. business. ebay interest #1, how much money can ebay make from the seller and how quickly could he become a PITA. Since in Germany and U.K. private sellers sell without fees (except for promoted listings) the question arises to what extent ebay then favors business sellers and was it generally always the case that business gets an extra boost?
I have seen several resellers reacting to this episode by deciding to delist a large portion of their store listings. I must have missed it where Bert suggested to do this. I understand you shouldn’t list items that won’t sell, but many times you list items you think will sell but they don’t. Where does he say that having those items listed in your store affects how quick other higher sell through items will sell? Can you look at the transcript and point me to this please?
the thinking as I understand it is, if low STR/low CVR items hurt your ranking, you should remove those but it might be a double edged sword as others have also speculated. removing listings ebay has invested traffic into may also negatively affect you. catch-22
Q: If I recall correctly, there was some shift in thinking from eBay that 100% positive feedback was ‘unbelievable’ so having a lower feedback score was their aim. Can Bert offer an opinion on that please? I strive for 100% but is that a wasted effort?
So Bert is saying feedback is very important. So if I see a buyer that asks a lot of questions and has given many negative or neutral feedback, as a seller I need to block all of these people. It's not worth tarnishing my reputation as a seller for 1 single sale that is highly likely to give a neutral or negative. And Bert says it will affect my future sales and reputation with ebay(because ebay sees the negative buyer experience, and that is a knock on me as a seller). So in the future I will block all buyers that give negatives.
No - he said if it drops below 99% it comes more into play - so if you're a shitty seller and get a bunch of negative feedback, then yes, it is very important.
Ask next show why eBay does not have an onboarding video for new sellers. It would not be difficult to present what is acceptable and expected from eBay sellers.
I love this guy.... this is what I always said. If you have the secret to ebay success why would they tell you. 😂 If there way a secret Ebay would use it to profit and grow. Some ppl want to go to heaven without dying. It's just not going to happen, there is no flesh allowed. 🤭😄🙆♀️🤷♀️
Defects are not in your control in all aspects if eBay frickin places it on hold. I had no ability to refund the buyer for a package the postal service lost after the 10 day hold was in place. I tried to appeal and was denied. Trying one more attempt to appeal. Never allow eBay to open a case on a lost package thinking it will get delivered. Simply refund the buyer to save yourself a defect. Horrible process that screws the seller imo.
A lot of resellers need to watch this video. Conspiracy theories and fretting over implied website shut downs are getting you nowhere. Making constant drastic changes to your store is a form of insanity. Did eBay leave your store a note saying they went out to get a pack of cigarettes?? Behaviors are the hardest things to change and this is why some Sellers will always blame eBay for poor store performance. Longevity and consistency are not binary.
At the 22 minute mark. The irony that eBay is worried about a “bad buyer experience” but will try to push buyers into buying the same widget for more money to pocket a few extra pence… is comically out of touch
But yet a reality. People don’t know what they don’t know. Buyers can have a good buying experience AND pay more because many of them are oblivious and just don’t know.

I second this. Or by individual item. You hear people saying they took down 200 old listings that weren't selling and their overall sales picked up.
