Terminus Episode 158 - Sear Bliss, Windswept, Limbonic Art, Arcane Bayonet
As Terminus prepares for its annual summer break (jetskiing, goblin slaying, etc.), we unleash a big black metal episode focused on only the coolest of wizard music. We charge up our orbs with an exclusive PREVIEW of the debut by Arcane Bayonet, an oddball take on pagan black metal laced with black and roll. Then, with glowing and tumescent orbs, we unleash a triumvirate of powerful spellcasting madness. First: the new record by Sear Bliss, legendary Hungarian hedge mages whose style of black/doom/folk/melodeath is as varied and well rounded as it is atmospheric and stirring. Second: the return of Windswept, a Saenko project which seeks to fuse the martial aggression of Hate Forest with the more delicate melodic sensibility of Drudkh to surprising results. Third: the mighty return of symphonic BM sorceror Limbonic Art, who drops the orchestra for something far more lean, hungry, and ferocious.

Terminus Episode 157 Ulcerate, Malignancy
มุมมอง 42621 วันที่ผ่านมา
To abruptly switch gears from our Very Special Episode earlier this week, we deliver reviews of the newest installments from two tech death giants. Ulcerate is back with their seventh full-length record which shows the band committing even more fully to the elements of post-rock, black metal, and textured drone which have helped define their sound- but have they strayed too far from the path? Collection of thematically related tracks? That's just one of the many, many questions this record inspires. I’m not quite halfway through this episode, but need to express how I like it so far. As someone who loves a lot of Czech grind, yes, Melancholy Pessimism is definitely one that went past me though I’ve always heard the name. Loving it, and going to listen to more of them. I do love the punky quality of a lot of those bands- do you guys like Gride?? Their discography CD is one of my favorites of the genre. Also. Immolation is probably one of, if not the only, “do no wrong” legacy dm bands for me. 😎🍻🤘🤘🤘

    One small correction, if I may (long after the fact lol): CiC is from Pittsburgh, and not exactly associated with that Belgian H8000 scene. They were more akin to bands like Racetraitor and the very early Willowtip bands like Fate of Icarus, Upheaval etc. H8000 was bands like Congress and Liar, the more chunky sxe Earth Crisis sounding bands as far as I know (I don’t claim to be an expert on that- ask Pat from GroundZeroSalem, he’s much more knowledgeable) I really liked that Véhémence album when it came out, and want to give it another listen now. Wish I could find a CD copy that’s not an arm and a leg. Another great episode fellas. I’ll get up to date at some point 😆🤘

    Since I have no idea if you saw my final chat message sent pretty much _as_ the stream ended, I must reiterate my thanks to Black Metal Guy for shouting out my Khanate superfan ramble about Things Viral on the Torture Doom episode. I did indeed find the stream image googling what you said and briefly set it as my desktop wallpaper before you pointed out that it was all NSBM bands. It's still funny, no doubt, but not funny enough to be worth any conversations that start with "ew, why do you have nazi bands on your desktop?" My own edit with B&W album covers from bands I actually listen to will have to follow - I'm thinking Charles Bronson's Youth Attack! and Nails's Unsilent Death to start with. Probably Transilvanian Hunger too. And as for the "enclaves of taste on RYM and why they stay," my personal view is that ultimately it's a nice database and way to recommend things. Sure, you may not like everything in the top 100, but if you want to find "albums that are X and Y characteristic" they have the tools for that. I've discovered so much music that I like through browsing that site while still being able to maintain my own individual taste - I like some of the canon, but not because it's canon. And I like writing reviews that people read and that promote things that I like - I'm sure you guys can sympathize with that desire. It's like having a blog but the site architecture part is done for you. If you just want it to spoonfeed you "taste in music," you can do that, but that's not all it's good for. Yeah, autism ramble is my primary form of communication.

    • @TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast
      @TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My pleasure man, it was a great comment - had to tell TDMG. Re. RYM - yeah, we appreciate its function as a review aggregator, just not what it's become as a tastemaking hub. I think the Top 100 lists have had a pretty destructive effect on how people find music. Scrolling thru those conveys a very skewed idea of what the most important black metal is, and I'm sure that's true for other genres too. Ofc, as TDMG said, it's not like there are a ton of great alternatives. Metal Archives ain't what it used to be. No worries, it's ours too. Thanks for hanging out tonight! - TBMG

    I know the episode hasn’t been out for very long, but I listened to the windswept part first as that was the band I was most excited about. Don’t have the musical knowledge to add to any of your points, but I will say some connections and interactions Roman Saenko has had with the couple of scenes and bands you mentioned here. You mentioning French makes a lot of sense, as Saenko had a guest vocalist appearance ‘Niquez vos villes’ on Peste Noire’s self titled album, doing growls. That album had quite a few guest vocal performances, so how intimate did he get with famine and the rest of PN? Not so sure, but it does show he certainly interacts with the French BM scene, like you said with Neige. Also, of course this is very much clutching at straws, but according to a review on RYM, Saenko has had friendly Email interaction with deafheaven, so it’s possible he interacts and listens to very modern, shoegazy material, shown through his writing. Adding to your points about the mid tempo post punk sections in the EP, the very short lived first form of windswept was called ‘Herbarium’ which was pretty much just a post black band. Much slower, not nearly as noisy, but did feature similar post-punk, rhythmic tom drum sections that are in this most recent EP, so listening to it made me feel like he’s harkening back to the very first form of this project. I will listen to the rest of the episode, I promise. Just got too excited about windswept, leading to this absolute splurge comment. Cheers.

I'm not even that surprised about the DFHVN thing. Apparently he's also friends w/ Winterfylleth - ofc, they're much closer to him musically/spiritually, but they're younger dudes w/ a more accessible take on that sound. We've got an interesting portrait emerging here: Despite being one of the most mysterious dudes in modern BM, he has a lot of friends on the scene, basically keeps up w/ new music, and is open to talking to younger bands inspired by his work. Which is pretty cool! Maybe he'll even listen to...... this podcast? 🙏🥲 Re. Herbarium - how the fuck did I miss that??? -TBMG ⚔

    I definitely noticed that Screamo edge right away with this recent Ulcerate record, glad you eventually got there because as soon as you were saying that Ulcerate are an extreme metal band because they have nowhere else to be, I thought "nah, they'd totally fit in as a Screamo band." Infant Island, Ostraca, a lot of really popular (by Screamo standards) Screamo bands lately have been doing the "noisy arpeggiated guitar parts with spastic never-grooving drums and heavy post-rock influence" thing. Dunno if that's a case of Screamo bands ripping off Ulcerate in the years since Everything is Fire or just Ulcerate's "thing" not really being that forward-thinking unless you've only ever been exposed to metal (which seems to be a problem for most "cutting edge metal" - it tends to just be "what if we did _this,_ but metal?").

Virus you may have heard of, with the guy from ven buens ende. Or at least Virus is like the best version of that kind of riffing. Malignancy is really good and I hope to see them live someday, especially how they have those songs down to a point where they can bust them out in between banter like a joke it's almost confusing that they don't have to be quiet and mentally prepare

      Good call, never heard Virus. If anyone knows them well, it'll be TDMG. It looks like Virus doesn't predate Ulcerate by that long, but maybe Ulcerate were drawing from Ved Buens Ende? The othe neglected starting point for the "glimmering dissonant arpeggio" style is Akercocke - they had two full-lengths out by the time of Ulcerate's first demo. Glad you dig the Malignancy as much as us! A couple other commenters were talking re. their live attack - see the mikeess / fume thread. @@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast Agreed. My wife got tickets to this years Metal Threat as a Christmas gift, and then we found out it got postponed due to some shenanigans :( Better late than never though, sounds like they found a new venue and it will happen in 2025. Not sure where you guys are located, would you attend? Would be cool to have a beer and shoot the shit with both of you. Thanks again for the killer podcast! 🤘

      Hell yeah dude, thanks for listening! we're still proud of that old DS review, glad you enjoyed it - and my Mahavishnu sample >:) A lot of our listeners are more geared towards black metal, war metal, etc., so It's always great hearing from dedicated brutal/tech death fans. @@mikeess Well shit, thanks man. Do you know Sonny Sharrock? More like noisy electrified free jazz, but w/ a strong tonal center. If not, check out "Ask The Ages" w/ Pharoah Sanders. It's like a weird jazz analog to raw pagan black metal, right down to the cover art. A friend put this on once and I was blown away. - TBMG

    Belus has been my favorite Burzum album for a while now, so it’s been cool to see it slowly get critically rehab’d (at least from the true extreme metal community) in recent years. As much as Varg bullshits about his own music, I 100% believe him when he talks about how Belus was always the true end game for Burzum. All of the most trancelike, pagan leanings of Hvis and Filosofem are still present on it, but they coalesce in such a uniquely relaxing (but also oddly energizing) way. As for this new one, I definitely enjoy it, but I agree that it’s goes maybe a little too far off into non-metal territory. Regardless, I do think that Varg has tapped into something very original with this and Belus, so I hope he we don’t end up with another decade long “Burzum is done with metal” hiatus.

      Thanks man, always good to hear from another Belus appreciator. I like what you said about "relaxing but also oddly energizing." Black metal tends to be kind of consuming music, which isn't always a good thing. You can get so keyed up that you're useless for almost anything except, I dunno, walking in the woods or going into battle (and maybe not even that). You get swept up in this torrent of otherworldly passion that lacks a concrete object, so you claw your fist to the sky and thrash around and when you're done, you're drained, and even more estranged from a mundane world that can't live up to the excitement. Under the wrong conditions, at least, it can be dispersive, rather than fortifying. I think Varg is working against that. Hvis in particular was FRANTIC, which is something you could never say about this new stuff. Belus conjures energy, but in that centering, steadying way - it relaxes the will to unlock action. You could say the same thing about the new record, though it's obviously more tranquil. I tend to find that potent calm / relaxing energy in Dead Can Dance, neofolk, etc., more than in BM. Given his taste, I would be surprised if Varg WASN'T a DCD fan, though he obviously could draw similar ideas from electronic music. The other band that really rejects the "dispersive" aspect of black metal, is Spite Extreme Wing - music that creates and SUSTAINS supreme tension of the will, the mindset proper to effective action, rather than releasing that energy in climax after climax. It's no coincidence that SEW were also drawing heavily on DCD, neoclassical, martial industrial, etc. Ofc since Belus and the SEW records, a few other bands have tapped into that mood, e.g. Necropole. - TBMG

    Burzum laid the foundation for atmospheric Black metal but that's about it, there were better artists among the 90s black metal bands whose works still would be great in the current year but Burzum's music just aged poorly.
