  • On today's installment of Terminus we get two dramatically different sides of Teutonic black metal, both of unquestionable interest to all burly, woodcutting Terminators. First: the return of Rostorchester, whose brand of heavily emo and punk-infused black metal achieves its full potential- mostly by becoming primarily an emo band!* Next: the debut full length of Ad Mortem, who follow closely in the footsteps of friends Totenwache in refreshing the Sargeist style with a steelier and more stoic German countenance- when they're not partying, of course.
    0:00:00 - Intro
0:04:10 - Rostorchester - Der Zinnen Sang vom Niedergang (BergStolz)
0:53:43 - Interlude - A Pregnant Light - “Babychain,” fr. Broken Play (Colloquial Sound Recordings, 2019)
0:59:39 - Ad Mortem - In Honorem Mortis (Purity Through Fire)
1:37:59 - Outro - Mavorim - “Krieger, Voran!,” fr. the Verbrannte Erde split w/ Totenwache (Independent, 2018)
*CORRECTION: At the start of the Rostorchester review, we refer to a TH-cam comment by Antimessiah. This was actually a fake account! See the thread on the Rites of Pestilence upload, where the real Antimessiah drops in to set the record straight.

I wish you guys made playlists for specific genres so i can find episodes.
Would be cool to see the origin of the "friendly cat black metal" term and various other subgenre terms developed throughout this podcast.
Ps. The first track on their newest album kinda sounds like Beethoven's Ode to Joy, definitely a german classical influence, but I definitely hear the post punk influences too.
The lyrics you talk about are very Nietzschean.

Since I (and Totenwache) was mentioned here so often, I just wanted to say: Hi!
It is great to see you guys talking about music from friends of us. I am sure they'll appreciate it.
And yes, we basically are an incest-pool of people in several different bands.
I think, getting into Mavorim can be tricky beause they changed a lot over the years.
I'd recommend two songs to check out, that show how much Mavorim changed.
    "Old"-Mavorim: Kein Licht
    "New"-Mavorim: Tod und Teufel
Going forward with the recommendations: Other friends of ours have also released their debut album last year.
    Band: Unhallowed
    Album: Awaken the Black Flame
What should be interesting for you guys is that those guys dont do the franco-finish style as we do, but more of a swedish-style black metal, in a mgla-style sound.
And just so you know, after a lot of setbacks (that I wont get into now) we are finally working on getting our new stuff ready for our second full-length album. It is still a ways off, but we are getting there slow and steady. I'll let you know beforehand.
    Take Care.

Good to hear from you Host, hope you're well!
If Unhallowed sounds like 90s Swedish stuff, I should like it. And I tend to like stuff on Folter a lot. Will check out "new Mavorim" too.
Re. Totenwache - sorry to hear about the setbacks, I think the last 4y have been crazy for a lot of bands. Glad to hear you're pushing through to victory. Take your time, but please do let us know when it's ready.

Killer episode. I do think this Rostorchester album was a step back in many ways from “Die Sonne…”, but I still totally agree with the evaluation of the band in general and the specific features of a successful emo/black metal synergy. What makes Rostorchester successful imo is that it’s at the same time a romantic walk through the ruins of traditional germanic spirit in modernity, and a fervent embrace of a kind of creative opening in that vaccum. It isn’t just that the ages past will re-emerge, they’ll come back as part of something new and terrifying. Cyborg Teutonic Knights and what have you.

Thanks man! I really like your read on the record. I actually think that's the promise of black metal in general, built into its musical format: electro-primitive evocation of folk and classical melody. Certain bands are more focused on that prophetic dimension, w/ a clearer vision of what's to come. Spite Extreme Wing, Axis of Advance, Sorhin, etc. However, I'm not sure I hear it w/ Rostorchester. That doesn't mean you're wrong, though. What carries this beyond nostalgia / longing / whimsy? - TBMG ⚔

I think you articulated it yourself pretty well, there’s a lot of NWOBHM and such in some of these riffs. The blast beats, these wistful but empowering guitar parts and another critical piece which is missing from this album in particular but was present on “Die Sonne…” which is Grief’s vocals. On that album, they’re much more dynamic and aggressive. In general, there’s a second gear that the band hits sometimes which elevates the wistful parts into something that is a kind of an aristocratic, almost stern, joyful exuberance. It’s defiant music but it takes so much pride in that defiance that there’s a real joy for its work.

The riffs on the rostorchester record are enjoyable as usual, plus I think the production assists the music better compared to previous releases. But the thing that really steps it up for me is the vocal performance. He is doing vocals in his usual style, I know you guys said the lyrical topics seem very personal and more focused compared to other bands, but on other albums he almost sounds bored and without much effort. On this record he sounds like he has proper conviction and energy, which really elevates it for me.

Good point man! The vocals impressed me too, but I forgot to mention them. Are these a step up from Eisenwinter too? - TBMG

@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast I have to say, his vocal performances aren’t the most consistent thing in the world, plus early eisenwinter was very muddy with vocals very low in the mix. But I am pretty confident in saying in recent years his vocals have improved by a decent chunk across all projects. However, with this new rostorchester, he has put out his best performance, in my opinion.

That’s funny cause I feel the opposite about the vocals on this album. The last one had a much better performance from
      Greif.

The reason I never mentioned emo is tbh never got into it or had actual knowledge on it. Its not a genre that ever made a big impression in europe, at least not in this corner of europe, as it did in anglophone countries, afaik at least. Only contact I got with it was in my late teens, I remember listening to some basic stuff like a Brand New record, that Cap n' Jazz, Orchid and Pg. 99 at some point. Never something revisited much tho, except Orchid.
So yeah, for me rostorchester is just major key BM, with obvious reference points being traditional heavy metal, punk, shit like eisenwinter and absurd, germanic folk music, etc.
It was not out of politeness or any kind of denial of influence, it could be Bossa Nova Black Metal for all I care, as long as it slaps.
You do bring up some interesting points tho, and there's definitely a lot of Mathy riffs on this record for sure

Hey man, good to hear from you, and thanks for the European perspective! Honestly, that makes sense, and tracks w/ what Antimessiah just said in the comments on your upload. I guess there really is an important regional difference, which is interesting (see my reply to him, over there). like you, I only found the "real screamo" stuff late in my teens, and the only one of those bands that really stuck is Planes Mistaken for Stars.
Agreed re. trad metal and Germanic folk being important for Rostorchester.
Glad you could see where we were coming from, and thanks for listening. - TBMG ⚔

@@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast Hey brother! Yeah just checked those comments, and yeah absolutely agree with what you said regarding convergent evolution! After hearing some of those samples you mentioned and even remembering that Cap n' jazz album I can definitely see the resemblance in the scales and arpeggios they do and shit, besides the merging of styles. I was talking specifically about where I'm based (portugal), but I see following antimessiah's comment the case in central europe is probably similar yeah. He seems like a cool chap too, most dudes in the "scene" would burst out in flames with your "accusation" ahah.
Need to check that band out then. I remember listening to Orchid often for a couple years, havent gone back since but their debut was intense. Checked a bit of Rites of Spring as well and it didn't seem bad, tbh it some tracks reminded me of Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade which I fucking love that album.
Cheers mate, and appreciate another great episode
