- "Hipster black metal"- a term that inspires tremendous derision, even within the halls of this very podcast. But what if we were to confront the phenomena head-on and truly evaluate its potential? Today we have a triumvirate of records that could all be labelled as "hipster BM" in some sense, but with radically different takes. Hauntologist, a fresh spinoff of Mgla, plays heavily in the realm of goth and post-punk. Departure Chandelier returns from a long absence with something heavier, more primitive, and Bathorian, eschewing much of its melodic past. And returning from even longer: Vemod rises from the grave, reinterpreting grandiose post-rock song structures with the raw power of early Enslaved.

The point you made about Departure Chandelier reminds me of the first time i heard Ash Pool's Genital Tomb, the first track (Lascivious Tyranny) kinda reminded me of Goatmoon's riffs.
(For context, Dominick was also in Ash Pool, thats how I found his black metal stuff).
It’s interesting that Hauntalogist’s musical identity is directly expressed in their name and logo.
Came here to say exactly this haha the logo is very representative of their sound.
I enjoy the back half of the record significantly more
Damn I missed that completely! Thanks for pointing that out. - TBMG
I’ll be revisiting the new Departure Chandelier. I gave it a spin when I got the promo and it just did not grab me, but I think in the context of Moonblood and JI influences vs the Siegneur Voland I expected to hear more of, I may have a new appreciation.
Also hard agree on the brittle digital production. Hate when bands do that, though it seems inevitable these days.
Cool, yeah, give it another shot. This is that "deliberately boring black metal" we talk about. They're doing it on purpose and it's HARD AS A COFFIN NAIL. - TBMG
I can't say that I'm a fan of Hauntologist. I'd enjoy it more if it was a full-fledged post-punk. As I've said before somewhere else, I'm grateful that M is the creative force behind Mgła and KSM. Owls Woods Graves is a nice offshoot, I always had a soft spot for well done crust/punk+BM.
An off-topic question for TDMG since you're into PE/noise: Have you listened to the new Genocide Organ? Also, I urge you to check out Mikołaj's PE project "Prelest". He has released two short very well done heavy industrial / PE albums so far. He also performed at Tower Transmission 2023 on Saturday's set. There's footage on the Special Interest channel if you want to watch.
Fair enough man, I think for a lot of true metalheads, the screamo-isms will be a tough pill to swallow. But as teenagers in early 00s America, it was kind of in the air we breathed.
Intruding on your off-topic thread - thanks for the rec. I'll check out Prelest for sure. I don't really follow pure noise stuff, but if it's got a heavy industrial slant (Trepaneringsritualen?) I'd probably dig. - TBMG
@@TerminusExtremeMetalPodcast "as teenagers in early 00s America, it was kind of in the air we breathed." hahaha I see what you mean. And no, it's not similar to TRP, it's more on the drone side of the spectrum with minimal vocals and samples drowned in the heavy distortion. Hope you'll like it!
