The Secret 1955 Delirium Tremens Prison Experiment
In 1955, Dr. Harris Isbell published a medical paper entitled "An Experimental Study Of The Etiology of Rum Fits and Delirium Tremens."
On the face of it, the report simply described an investigation into alcohol withdrawal. The findings still inform treatment for alcohol addiction today.
But look beneath the surface, and you find a legacy of human experimentation, sinister medical institutions, and CIA money.
Sounds like conspiracy theory nonsense, right? It isn't. And it's very scary.
This episode of Bat Country is a bit of a change of pace from the norm, and I'll be returning to the normal, more personal style videos now. But this was so interesting I just HAD to talk about it.
As always, good luck out there.

I’ve used the term “Functional Alcoholic” because there is a big difference from keeping your life in order vs. blowing everything up. It’s honestly not an arrogance, but more like realizing that you can keep the plates spinning for now.

The more I watch your channel, the more I notice how similar our stories are! Especially the whole social chameleon thing and kind of fitting in a little bit with everyone in high school. I've struggled with anxiety/self confidence issues for as long as I can remember, things have gotten better with time, and they are certainly better now that I'm sober, but I think it will be a lifelong struggle for me either way! I'm grateful that I found your channel man, awesome stuff! Keep posting! ❤

I'm thinking the doctor and the Arab had a little deal worked out. Doctor gives him access to the ward, he gets a cut from the sale of stolen goods. I think gabapentin should be prescribed for patients coming out of DT. It helps to disrupt the amygdala from triggering the fight or flight response. It's used primarily for neuropathic pain, but it's effective in treating anxiety and stress disorders.

Have you considered that you might have hallucinated the guy stitching his stabwound with his bootlaces? In the west, inmates aren't allowed anything they can use to choke themselves or anyone else with. That includes laces, belts, drawstrings, etc. I've never been locked up in central Asia, so idk. Wild story

I was an alcoholic. I managed to broaden my horizons and become a general drug addict. Why specify when there are other substances, better substances that can kill me immediately in microgram doses?... incidentally, AA is a great thing for personal growth and establishing a social foundation in recovery, if you use it correctly.

I find it very interesting that the use of the rorschach tests were done to suggest "unsavoury characteristics " therefore diminishing the victim's characters. Clearly they knew what they were doing was very wrong but almost tried to furnish an excuse or lessen the outrage when they were caught.

Super insightful video. I've had alcoholism in my family, and while i have a pretty benign relationship to the sauce, i have my own struggles and addictions. A lot of the self reasoning you talk about reminds me of myself. You also struck a chord at the end saying that other people just want to see that you are okay and well. Had an old friend give us all numerous (and understandable) reasons for why he drinks. I can greatly empathize when someone dealing with a bunch of shit, but at the end of the explanation, i didn't feel anymore sorry for him than i would have normally because it was the drinking that was doing the most damage out of all of the things he talked about. We just wanted to see him get better. Anyway, glad youtube randomly showed me your channel. Thanks for sharing this unimaginably vulnerable tidbit. Be well out there everyone! i remember watching that movie. It struck me out of nowhere. It was 1997 or 1998. It ran on german arte TV channel. I was 17 and i was so traumatized for month and month. Years even. even now. I remember zapping on that channel and it was at the beginning were they discovered the heap of bodies behind the hut. What the germans did to the girl was just to much for my young soul. It is truly the only war movie that leaves one mad at war. Most movies about war show how the guns are shooting and the explosions and the hero soldier. crap i say. This one really shows what is happening to the people on the recieving end of the violence. I recommended the movie often to people when they where talking about war. but i dont think anyone watched it. neither did i ever again. It is so powerful.
