My Love/Hate Relationship with Video Game Remasters/Remakes
we love seeing our favorite games from back in the day updated with modern visuals, but on the other hand, it can hurt our enjoyment of that same game we could've just replayed in its original from. we've seen masterpieces like the original GTA trilogy get absolutely dragged through the mud and just finally updated to the standard of quality they should've released in. we've seen disappointing remakes like the FF7 and RE 3 games that take radical directions away from their source material. we've even seen reboots like doom and tomb raider which our amazing, but I've always been conflicted about games like new god of war reboots that feel wildly different from past entries in their series. everything from low quality HD ports and re-releases of the same games as Skyrim and GTA 5, while other popular titles like GTA 4 and Oblivion remain untouched. I can't help but have this love/hate relationship with the idea of remakes and remasters since they've kind of taken the place of new IPs and AA projects that we used to always see in the past. is there a way to still have these beloved games brought to modern consoles while striking a balance or are we just doomed to run through this franchise hamster wheel until the industry eventually burns itself out from its lack of creativity. well, I hope to shed some light on what I believe that perfect balance is and look at a couple studios that have remained consistent with their identity, even when making entirely new games.

The Magic Of Handheld Consoles
มุมมอง 3.7K14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
we are living in the golden age of handheld consoles! ever, since the Nintendo Switch came out, I feel like there's been this surge of new handhelds flooding the market. everything from budget retro handhelds like from Ambernic to powerful portable PCs like the steam deck, there's literally a handheld for everyone. I've been playing almost exclusively on handheld devices this year and I want to...
The FUTURE of Video Game Ownership is Here

if you're like me you probably remember a time when you regularly went to the store to pick up movies and games. subscription services like Netflix and Game Pass have ultimately made access to media convenient, but has it made it better? sometimes it feels like we're living in the matrix; in some world crafted to make us comfortable while in the background were being sucked dry. in this video, ...
Why You Should Replay Your Favorite Games
มุมมอง 27Kวันที่ผ่านมา
before my backlog overwhelmed me and I thought about quitting gaming for good, I decided to go back for one last hurrah and play my favorites of all time. while reliving these experiences I realized that I still have a passion for this hobby. it wasn't time, it wasn't that I was getting older, it isn't even about playing older games, it was because I wasn't playing them on my own terms anymore;...
Why Is There No SCROLLSLIKE Genre?
มุมมอง 3.1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
I've recently been playing a new indie game called dread delusion and have been blown away by how much of an ambitious indie game it is. what started as a simple search for a game like Skyrim, I came across what might be the most authentic interpretation of an elder scrolls game, noy made by Bethesda. it's made me wonder, though, with the success of the elder scrolls series; what it takes inspi...
Is a Video Game Crash Happening Right Now?
มุมมอง 3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
are we experiencing the next big video game crash? we're seeing so many companies make all these Anti-consumer discissions with their games and marketing that don't make any sense. when you look at it closely, these practices seem to mirror the downfall of Atari in the early 80s that almost caused this medium as a whole to die off. in this video, I want to give this topic a closer inspection an...

The Most Pointless Console Generation of All Time

Publishers Don't Want You Having Singleplayer Games
มุมมอง 4.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
why does it seem like AAA publishers don't want us having singleplayer games anymore? We used to have great franchises like batman Arkham, Dishonored and Mass Effect, but in recent years, we've seen them replaced with games like suicide squad: kill the justice league, Red fall and anthem as singleplayer games have begun to be phased out. the worst part of it is these games more often than not r...

Is Nintendo Losing Their Creativity?

Does anyone feel like Nintendo has kind of been playing it safe this generation? I don't mean in terms of hardware because the Nintendo switch was revolutionary for the handheld market. I'm talking about the games. looking back on consoles like the GameCube and what they had to offer, it definitely feels like Nintendo is becoming more and more risk averse.

I won't be playing The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. There's just nothing I'm seeing that would justify buying this game. Will Nintendo give old fans of Zelda a reason to return to the series or is this just it, moving forward.

Another thing to consider is that our generation became addicted to game at a young age because of our parents. It was a means of escape from a hostile home life. Lets be real for a sec but a lot of our parents were tired of us being kids and at the same time, these gaming consoles were created. A lot of games are boring now because we dont have a life we have to escape from anymore. And we play a lot of the old ones over and over simply due to nostalgic value
3:35 I played all gba pokemon games many times. Sometimes to try a new starter pokemon. And sometimes to go to league with a different team or with different moveset. Those were good times.
So my main comment is when you talk about games where the devs care and the games you go back and play... you're naming the biggest hits. They're still remembered today for good reasons. There was tons of shovelware shit going back decades. Hell, the reason the industry almost crashed back in 1985 before the Nintendo was because too many companies were trying to make a buck shoveling out garbage games for the Atari. Nothing is new under the sun.
Also I'd be willing to bet money, real money, that the "censored" art in the Dragon Quest 3 remake was done by Toriyama himself before he passed.
Definitely the year of the back log, my most recent games were Trepang and Lies of Pi
@Demsky83 Both of those games are on my wishlist. I loved playing fear back in the day
Glad to have my 360 slim working as new. I am on the path in cd collection spree. Surprisingly there some cd in marketplace in a very good condition as it was bought a month ago.
I still prefer Final Fantasy XVI & Visions of Mana moreso than garbage live service games.
I grew up in the 90's when the biggest competitors were Nintendo & SEGA. Sony came in after being backstabbed by Nintendo for the SNES-CD Add-on. I entered High school in 2001 when Xbox released in November of that year along with the GameCube. I was 20 when Assassins Creed first cameout.
Fuck live service games.
Love hate is the perfect word to describe my relationship with remakes as well. Heck its a perfect word to describe my relationship with gamers in general. I like and accept some things that would make gamers blood boil. Gamers say, do and accept some things that make my blood boil. Such is life, I guess.
New games? You mean they call those games? Rigged pay to wins?
But the newer games are fine.... Wu Kong is good new spiderman games are good. But i do miss the kind of games we had such as Deadrising 2 good arcade story games.
Yes, this. All of this totally, especially the *games that came to an end bit* @9:38 A big part of the reason of why I don't like *Tears of the Kingdom* is because it's too long. I crashed out trying to do everything, putting a 100 hours into it, only to end up dropping it in the end. It's so frustrating. I much preferred when games were 20 to 30 hours but gave you worthwhile replayable content that made you want to come back for another round. That's so much more fun than pumping 1000s of hours into a game that never ends, like GTA Online.
I was team Huffy back in the day and super jelly of anyone with a Mongoose
Until that one kid with a copy of mat Hoffmans pro bmx 2 and a $400 haro with all 4 pegs comes along and rides up that tree. Now we're both jelly!
@Tenacityfromtheglass hahaha
If I ever have a kid, I'm just gonna pretend it's 2001 and be like "Check out this new Zelda game that just came out! Twilight Princess!"
I literally did this same thing with my daughter and Simpsons hit and run 🤣
I think a lot of people are feeling this way now. I can relate. I miss physical games and not having to constantly download and juggle drive space. I recently started buying 360 games again as that was the last generation of gaming that still kinda meant something. With modern gaming, I find myself trying more indie games than AAA games. I have no interest in playing the new Cod or 2k games.
My coworker asked me if I was playing black ops 6. I told him, "it's just and call of duty game. I haven't played those since 360."
Gor me, Nintendo's the overall exception. They don't have a spotless record, but half of the success of the Switch came from its strong first-party support. There's also other third-party franchises that also have quality polish. My personal fav being Monster Hunter, there's also Doom, Eldin Ring, plus more modern IPs like AstroBot and Black Myth Wukong! There ARE games with the same level of polish as the classics, just as there were a bunch of mediocre projects back in the day. The recent balndness is more apparent because Sony and Microsoft are barely pursuing the level of quality in their first party exclusives. Save for some exceptions, AAA titles have been botched for Corporates need to print money!
Yeah man I know what you mean. Iv'e had the Steam Deck for about two years now and every time I open the carry case I here the Zelda tune play in my head when Link opens a treasure box lol. I am a retro gamer as well, I go way back to the early 80s. I still play on my Commodore 64 it loads games by using the old cassettes. I agree with everything you have said 100% Happy retro gaming my friend!
Legit Steam Deck and RG35XXSP are my go-to systems when I'm not playing something that requires my PC. I've gotten back into not only emulation, but game preservation is really important to me. Being able to emulate nearly everything on the Deck, and being able to take almost all of my favorites with me on the SP is something that I never would have thought possible.
One of my observations is older games that modern controllers aren't precise enough to handle. Sometimes this is for simple reasons of hand ergonomics, a particular input was designed around a button being near the finger, and no longer is, but beyond that, sometimes modern controllers are just too sloppy to play N64 or Gamecube games in a way that feels baffling. Even the older Xbox controller feels a lot more responsive than modern ones
I find myself missing a lot of the old game box art lately. There's a lot of character to it that's just... Missing from modern games. Part of it might have been that you knew going in that the 8-, 16-, or even 64-bit graphics tended to be fairly abstract, so the wild box art helped get your imagination working to fill in the gaps of what was really going on in the game. Modern game label art is... Well, it tends toward the 'realistic' end of the scale, and while I can appreciate that both artistically and technically - a lot of it may be only moderately photoshopped from in-engine footage, and it genuinely looks good - it just doesn't grab me the way a lot of older stuff does. Granted, there were a lot of jumbled, bizarre, and misleading messes among the old stuff - Mega Man 2 comes to mind - but when it got things right, it nailed the vibe of the game in ways most new games' box/label art just doesn't capture. I mean, just look at the box art for Gradius - that is some prime 70's-80's sci-fi artwork right there.
No exclusives, no point. "B-BUT EXCLUSIVES ARE FINANCIALLY UNFEASIBLE NOW!" Then there might as well be no consoles.
Kids nowadays are accustomed to having skins and tons of micro transactions in games 😔 we’re never getting full experiences with our purchase ever again
I don’t think it’s because older games are a comfort. I mean maybe it is. But I think the bigger issue is a lot of newer games are made to be addictive and give you constant dopamine hits to keep you coming back. While older games were made to be fun and tell good stories. I don’t think they’re the same anymore.
Elden Ring is a disappointment. It tells you this a platinum Soulsbornesekiro player. FS never should have made an open world game.
Yeah, companies used to want to make fun games, but they're only interested in making profitable games these days. I think it's also related to the fact that making a game is much more expensive these days.
We jeed to bring back couch co op
Which game were you playing in the video?
About "playing something at the right time", I'm playing Silent Hill 2 (original) for the first time after 25 years it was released
I literally bought an original Xbox and I’ve been playing the hell out of GTA San Andreas the nostalgia is crazy
Capitalism is literally incapable of producing a fun experience.
Buying a ds over a steamdeck lol cuz its more portable plus more battery life THATS IT
A game that left eternal impression on me as a teen was Okami. The story, gameplay, visuals and ambience were unique and its a shame there arent so many bold games out there today. I could replay Okami 100 times, and each time it will be a unique experience...
I don’t know if you’re aware, but you can still buy new consoles that require discs… Side note, I agree with a whole lot of what you said, though. The whole “open world” thing is getting SO damn tedious. The only exception (in my opinion) is the Insomniac Spider-Man series.
4:43 I wouldnt mind NSO if Virtual Console still existed and I could play retro games on Switch without having to have a subscription.
I personally only really like remakes that don't substantially change the story or gameplay in anyway. Give me the original game with updated visuals, bug fixes, and maybe some extra content. I much prefer remakes like Pokemon Leaf Green/Fire Red/Soul Silver/Heart Gold, Kirby's Nightmare In Dreamland, Kirby's Return To Dreamland, Spyro Trilogy, Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, Lollipop Chainsaw (despite the lack of original soundtrack), and the upcoming Croc remake to something like Final Fantasy VII, Dead Space, or the Resident Evil 2, 3, 4 remakes. Moreso , DO NOT CENSOR THE GAME! Remakes like Destroy All Humans 1 and 2, Diablo 2 Resurrected, and the Dead Rising Remake are objectively worse than the originals due to censorship. The absolute WORST remake of all time for me, though, is Warcraft 3 Reforged because it not only is a shitty remake, it also has censorship, and worst of all REPLACED the original game making it impossible to play without depatching and destroyed the online component.
just wanted to say about the whole woke/grifter mob (yeah both sides are annoying as hell, and they both complain about everything nowadays since twitter has been a thing people care about) rant, I agree but idk it used to be like that in the old days too, only difference is that now people are getting offended over other things, it used to be that everything was "satanic" or "too violent", lets end it, now it its "its too sexual, or too many black people on my games" like people will complain about anything all the time, and people have their right to not buy stuff, and that's whats cool about it, but for real games are bad today not because of those factors at all, they contribute sure, but at the end of the day, its because of greed or late stage capitalism lmao, once suits realized they can make tons of money by making the same game over and over (cough COD, cough FIFA) they just rode that wave! and that's what I was preaching since early 2010s, games don't need to be realistic, they should be fun first, if they are boring and have amazing graphics then ill pass it, if they are interesting but you are just watching cut scenes after cut scenes then I might as well watch a movie, gladly as you mention people are finally realizing that games nowadays are awful, and again not because of haters manipulating, its because of greed, its because of the just make something quick and release it, make another remake of that remake and release it, people are finally fed up with it, sadly Nintendo is basically the only one trying to be innovative to some extend but thats not enough, we need to go back to that era where EVERYONE was trying to make something cool, something fun
I also have to play an entire series from the beginning. I bought like a dragon: infinite wealth and then started playing the entire Yakuza series from the beginning just so I could start up infinite wealth and now I am a hardcore Yakuza fan!
Only 2 mins in, but I love it! I also made this year the year of defeating my backlog! I have played and finished so many games this year that I had just been sitting on for whatever reason. I had to just focus and commit and drop some of my live service multiplayer time sinks and go back to good old story/narrative driving single player or co-op experiences.
I've had so many "why the hell didn't I play this" moments this year. It has been glorious
Skate 3 holds a special place in my heart till this day 🥲
Ea black box are insanely talented at making purely fun experiences. The work they did with the Need for Speed games and skate game's! It's baffling how fast they were able to pump out quality games year after year
I feel like people get too hung up on the anti-woke stuff. If you're looking for a root cause of the problem IMO it's just that game design has been "solved" enough that companies can produce games as consistent, reliable products. Prior to around the HD generations games were still experimental and devs were figuring out what to do on the fly and pushing new ideas simply because they were passionate about them
That segment about having to manage your hard drive space for games really hit home with me. Like getting a new game and finding out you have to delete one or two of your old ones to make room for it. Or even better a game requires an update that the space takes enough to where you have to delete a game for that as well.
Now you can do it for free.
Once a year I play SMW on GBA. It's still my favorite Mario-Game of all time. Around Christmas I also play some ither comfort games of the past. This year it will be one of the Mario & Luigi Games on NDS or GBA.
I agree with you on a lot of this but I really disagree with your take on the new God of war series. They are both solid games imo. Fun addicting gameplay, beautiful graphics, well written and voice acted, and a compelling story. Maybe the first one more than the second one but still both enjoyable.
I like to play classic games, now after this video you'll make me more grateful keep up the cool content dude ❤
I actually like plenty of remakes like RE4 and Persona 3 Reload that I wouldn't made time to play the og
Objective markers ruined games
Yes. It feels like objective markers turn half of the game into a walking simulator where you just hold the thumbstick forward in between actual gameplay.
This is a great video. I don’t ever comment on videos, but this one hit home. I exactly agree with you. And putting value on older games, you realize that just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s more fun. Plus every game that I never got a chance to play back in the day is still new to me!
