Great video! 3D platformers were some of my favorite games growing up! I played the heck out of Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman 2, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper...and probably many more!
I did play through A Hat in Time, Mario Odyssey, Yooka-Laylee, Spyro Reignited, Crash N. Sane, and Crash 4 years ago, so I never thought 3D platformers completely disappeared. They're definitely still around, but some of them take more digging to find! Though, I usually have to do a little more research to kind of check the quality of the game. When I was younger, if the N64 box had the Nintendo or Rareware logo on it, it was usually a safe bet that I would enjoy it! 😅
I actually didn't even know about the 3D platformers you mentioned, so I appreciate you giving them attention. I will definitely pick those up as I still enjoy 3D platformers of all kinds!

Spark the Electric Jester 3 is the best 3D sonic game. Everyone who liked the Sonic Adventure games should try it.
But if you want something completely different, Lorn's Lure is a unique and innovative platformer. It's in the first person perspective, with a very good atmosphere and interesting setting.

I played a lot of Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64 when I was a kid. Even if triple A studios aren't really making as many games in the genre these days, I'm happy to see so many indie games I can add to my backlog of 3D platformers I have to play (one day I shall play all the cool ones) :3

This may sound harss, but the problem was Super Mario 64.
After that, every developer tried that type of 3D -formula, but failed miserably.
Super Mario 64 was simply too good and unique.
Sure, there were Banjo -Kazooie, Spyro The Dragon, Donkey Kong 64, Ape Escape, Rocket Robot On Wheels, and Conker's Bad Fur Day that all were excellent games.
But ultimately, concept was too much for developers to handle. They really struggled with free -rolling gameplay -concept on platformers. Losed "red string" when trying it on larger scale, as seen on Banjo -Tooie and Jak And Daxter.
While Nintendo has minds to master this type of gameplay, perhaps others should not even try, or they waste years.
However Rayman 2 & 3 were superb examples of 3D -platforming done right, courtesy of not doing Mario 64.
There is a place for 3D -platformers as seen on current Sonic Generations -game for example, but not for 3D -puzzle platformers outside Kyöto -shi.

I wish I could say the same for on-rail shooters. The genre barely survived when in favor of fps shooters. The death of light gun motion controllers are ditched in favor of VR. VR doesnt feel right for me.

@@Tenacityfromtheglass ahh Wii, that console is a light gun machine. It turned Resident Evil 4 into a light gun 3rd person survival game, it made Trauma Center move to console and made a sequel to Sin & Punishment(a series that I consider one of the best on-rail light gun games).
I had my hope for Gal Gun series but it all went down the drain when I discover Inti Creates would do more Gal Guardians. They are not a bad spin-off but I will miss my arcade-ish on rail games.
Ohh on the bright side, I saw around 4-6 on-rail indie games this NextFest. Candy Rangers is such a banger demo. Can't wait for full release. We also got a Star Fox/Afterburner style on-rail shooters like Mirage Feathers, Rainbow Cotton remake and Missile Dancer. Maybe its absolutely dead genre for AAA... ahh, who needs AAA when you can get 3 brand new indies with your $50 cash!!!!

Man 3d platformers. These games are ones I normallt flock to. My personal favorite by far has to be the psychonauts series. A 3d platformer collectathon about a boy who is psychic and has to use his powers to save the world. (There was also a vr game but i haven’t played that.) The first game and its sequel have a great world and characters. I love it.

Astrobot maybe has charme but no fun movement wich is the first thing you should nail as a platformer.
If you have an empty room and the character is fun to control, then you have something you can work with.
    Astrobot is just refferences.

Excelent video and indeed is good to see indie devs this age were N64/PS1 Kids, sometimes you just need to collect all Corn Sodas and beat the bad guy to make a good platformer
Although i would disagree on the Sonic Adventure games not felling as fast, while it is true that there are dash pads and automated loops that's where it ends, the amount of shortcuts you can pull of on those games by bouncing, spindashing then jumping or airdashing right before hitting the ground, even with the boost games i never feel the same control and speed that i do with the Adventure games

They're still up and running. But good luck expecting one from a big company, especially on a consistent basis like Nintendo who releases every one or two years.
To me, it's clear that there's more work needed to make a platformer than it is to make an FPS or an action game.

    • @jurtheorc8117
      @jurtheorc8117 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

In what sense do you mean action games, if i may ask? For fans of games like Darksiders, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, known as Character Action games (or whatever the name is at the moment) the genre is quite dry too these years. They're surprisingly difficult to make because of the way everything the player can do should ideally work well with everything an enemy can do.
The player has offensive, defensive and evasive/movement options, and so need the enemies. Plus programming that makes them use those options competently.
In recent years there have been Bayonetta 3 and GOW: Ragnarök, but story-wise Bayonetta 3 has a LOT of detractors and people are split on the actual gameplay. GOW by this point is a very different beast from how it started out, to the point there's a large amount of people that don't consider it Character Action.
Even still, a lot of effort has to go into considering enemy teamups and setups and taking into account how a player's arsenal grows.
There has been Soulstice in 2022 at least, and for upcoming character action games specifically, there's the likes of Genokids, Magenta Horizon, Jamphibian, Mightreya and Enenra: Daemon Core.
With Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Immortal and the Death that Follows, and Cookie Cutter having a place somewhere, but another problem there is to get word of such games out there.
To make 'em profitable and help out devs so that they can hopefully give more like it.
