Asian and Eastern European countries are experiencing a golden age of gaming quality and success not seen since the PS2 era. They are giving us so many great games and straight up masterpieces it can make it seem like this is the best gaming has ever been. Even in the West, there's an absurd amount of amazing Indie games released every month. But in the Western AAA market, this is the worst state I've seen gaming in my lifetime, and it's not even close. Not only are these big budget studios rightly suffering a crash, but it's likely to keep getting worse and I think it's likely the only shift we'll see is one of these big companies going down (likely Ubisoft) before they even attempt reversing course back to re-learn that they can't just coast off virtue signaling corporate policies and the investor cash that comes with it, brand & IP recognition or big budgets & graphics and expect to stay competitive into the future.
People don't draw the connection with the atari crash from the 80s because games are so different now and no games now are anything like ET on the Atari. Our current era does look like the video game crash from back then. I feel the biggest issue AAA (is it quadruple A now?) is they put way too much money and time in development. Even if you sell 3 millions copies you won’t make a profit… indies have understood that, and they why they can still make games even when they don’t sell that much Great video dude!

I like how you cap off with indie market because like a lot of people this is where I'm finding the most level of enjoyment over the past several years. Smaller devs show that game creation should be passion above profit because at the end of the day you need to connect with your audience and give them a joyful experience. Most AAA studios are so preoccupied with maximizing profits that creativity gets thrown out the window which gives most modern games this hollow feeling.
I wonder if Ubisoft isn't already fu**ed. 2024 was disastrous for them financially and for their reputation. Apparently, the new COD (BO6) has terrible multiplayer. Terrible maps, horrible spawning and Skill-based matchmaking like you mentioned. Maybe I'll try it with game pass, but IDK when tbh. Maybe after Christmas.
Especially with Ubisoft+ I wonder how many people will play ac shadows through subscription and cancel afterward? After the disastrous launch of outlaws, they're gonna need to sell 15 million plus in order to climb out of this hole they dug themselves into. Plus, they've trained people to wait and buy their games at deep discounts. Things are looking pretty grim for ubi. As far as BO6, I feel the same as you. I'm in no hurry to play it.
So many people don’t know about the first game crash in 1977 because of all the pong clones. It wasn’t huge but it was a crash. Something I did want to say that I disagree about is that the switch isn’t Nintendo’s best selling console…yet. It’s a hybrid console so it could be counted but I personally don’t believe so. Besides the point of it being a handheld console as well, to say something is best selling console you could mean of either categories or all. In which case, it’s still the DS. 154-155 million sold and the switch is right behind with 143. It will be interesting to see if it over comes those numbers though.
It's hard to say what a gaming crash looks like in today's gaming industry. But my speculation is that a major downfall will happen in the next 2-5 years. While Nintendo has been consistent with their game releases, they've also become pretty dam stale. The indie scene has become pretty stale as well, sure there are some good quality gems, but most Indie games are just cheap copies of other great games, they lack originality. Needless to say I don't have high hopes for the industry in its current form.
