Quick Change Tool Holders too tight? See what we did to fix ours | Part 13

In this video, we decided to experiment with some low-cost quick change tool holders we purchased from overseas. Brother you are a inspiration. I currently modified my Jetson Axle with a 3000 watt motor but i have to add some weight on the front because the motor is so powerful even the slightest throttle twist will cause aggressive wheelies. I was so disappointed because now i am stuck with my Jetson Axle because Costco started selling the Jetson Haze. Thats such a beautiful design. And i really wish I saw this one first

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching our videos! The Jetson Axle is a solid platform, but it sounds like you have quite a powerful setup. We can imagine that much torque would cause some wheelie action! Adding weight to the front is a smart move for better balance. As for the Jetson Haze, it does have a sleek design. If only you'd seen it earlier! Don't worry though, you can still have a blast with your Axle. We hope to offer parts for the Haze soon, so stay tuned for updates! Thanks for sharing your story with us. If you have any other questions or need advice on modifications, feel free to ask!

      @@Blacklisted_Garage Yes the Jetson Bolt and Axle both share the same architecture. The black frame is indeed steel; but I just love the design of the Haze. It is the best looking model out of all the other Jetson bikes. In my opinion, the Haze has that Cannondale-like aerodynamic look to it.

    What’s the range with the 48v battery and the controller

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are several variables that will determine the range you'll get with the 48v battery and controller setup. Our direct plug and play 48v battery has a 9.9Ah capacity. To estimate the range accurately, you'll need to consider the wattage of the motor you plan to use, as well as the average speed you intend to ride at. These factors will play a significant role in determining the range you can expect.

    So i bought your speed flasher and i did everything that you did in the video it worked but me and my brother did a race and my brother he has the jetson bolt and that goes 17.2 mph for the highest and i have the jetson pro which for me goes about like 16.5 mph i used the product and my brother still beat me and i think you where saying it goes about 19 mph but it didn't go that fast at all idk what is wrong and why it wont go 19 but i would like to know what you think.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate you sharing your experience with the speed flasher. The speed flasher is designed to remove the speed limit on the controller, allowing the bike to go faster than its stock speed. The controller stops providing power to the motor at a certain RPM from factory, which is equivalent to about 15mph. Once the speed limiter is removed, the new top speed is determined by various factors, with the battery voltage being a significant one. If you're using the factory battery and it's worn or aged, you may not see much of a gain in speed despite removing the speed limit. With our 48v battery, for example, you can expect to achieve around 21mph with the same setup. I hope this helps clarify things! Let me know if you have any further questions or if there's anything else I can assist you with.

    Thanks for the video. I have been thinking about doing something very similar and this video helps me visualize the process. Only I want to incorporate a radius turning ability on the plinth. One thing I would have done differently is that I would not have tapped the bolt into the aluminum plinth. I would have used a through bolt. Aluminum stretches too easily and your M10 bolt is going to mash itself lose in a short period of time. Easy enough to fix though. You can always drill it through , countersink the head and pin the head so it doesn't turn when you tighten the tool post.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your thoughts. Incorporating a radius turning ability on the plinth sounds like a cool addition! We went with tapping the M10 bolt into the aluminum plinth to keep things simple and maintain the original hardware. You make a good point about potential issues with the aluminum stretching over time. If we ever encounter damaged threads, we'll definitely consider your suggestion of drilling it through and using a longer bolt. Thanks for the tip, and happy crafting! :)

    Are 4 jaw chucks available?

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      According to the spec sheet, this machine features an MT3 style chuck. While 4 jaw chucks are available in MT3, we've opted to stay with a 3 jaw chuck for our current tasks. It proves to be more efficient since we rarely need to remount a piece to achieve a 0.010-inch spec, and we're mainly working with round bars at the moment. However, we're intrigued by the idea of trying the 4 jaw chuck eventually, especially for working with square bars and other shapes in the future!

      Although we haven't personally installed it on a Jetson Bolt (non-Pro) ourselves, numerous community members have successfully swapped the Bolt and Bolt Pro controllers, reporting it as a direct swap in terms of connectors. In this scenario, the FAFO Controller will also seamlessly integrate into the Bolt model!

      Instead of the 36v batteries, we've got packs in the same size but at 48v. However, we've chosen to stick with 36v for now to enjoy that extra range. Adding the 75100 + MY1020 combo would definitely give this a noticeable boost in pep for anyone seeking an upgrade!

    I have same lathe with 2" longer bed. Same toolpost. Gotba brick of d2 waiting beside the mill. If you need to cut angles you can simply config the old toolpost in the compound and leave 2 tools set up in it. That was my plan anyway. I subbed. Maybe we will touch base later.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for sharing your thoughts! That's a cool idea to use the old toolpost and the cross slide for cutting angles and keeping tools set up on it. We'll hang onto the old parts for those rainy day jobs when we need to cut some angles. Glad to have you subbed to our channel, and yeah, let's definitely catch up later!

      Yeah, we get where you're coming from! It might seem like an odd choice, but for us, we don't do taper cuts in our work. So, we figured it was worth swapping out for a more rigid setup with the Plinth base. It's all about what works best for your specific needs and preferences.

    I had the same problem; Out of desperation I tried using, rather gently, a triangle file against both sides of the tool holder's dovetail, pressing it so to be as flat as possible, and cyclically reversing the toolholder. Not so professional as using a lapping compound, but it worked a charm, and (alas) I had to fix several of them... :)

    Please do a bit of research on wearing rubber gloves around lathes and rotary tools. I highly recommend against it. Keep up the good work learning and enjoying your machine skills.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for bringing up this important safety consideration. While we do assume the risk of wearing gloves ourselves, it's crucial for everyone to be aware of the potential risks associated with wearing gloves around rotating machinery. Gloves can potentially get caught in the machine and cause harm. Safety should always be the top priority when working with machinery, and we appreciate your reminder to prioritize safety at all times.

    • @r2db
      @r2db 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do agree that, in general, wearing gloves while working on a lathe is a bad practice. At the makerspace where I go when I need the larger lathe or mill, one risks a very severe reprimand if not being told your shop time is over for the day for wearing gloves while operating the machines. However, those gloves are far less dangerous than cloth or leather gloves. The glove material will very easily tear instead of pulling the hand into the rotating mass. However, speaking as someone who has worn similar gloves for about 30 years and as a part of my work I have to perform surgery with cosmetic concerns, all gloves like that will degrade one's sensation. Only the most expensive ones (specifically manufactured and packaged for surgical use) interfere the least. To use at a home shop, they would be cost-prohibitive. Examination gloves, or mechanic's gloves like those shown, are inexpensive but also degrade light touch sensation the most. Wearing them while working around the many chemicals we use in the shop would be recommended. Wearing them while operating a lathe is demonstrating poor safety practices that, for someone who is inexperienced, does not understand the risks, and decides on leather or cloth gloves instead, can easily cause a disabling injury on a machine like this. On a larger lathe, it has caused fatal injuries.

      With the micro USB port, using a micro USB Bluetooth dongle instead of a wired connection is an interesting idea. However, we haven't heard of anyone attempting this method, so we cannot guarantee its compatibility or functionality. That being said, we are currently working on a dedicated Bluetooth unit that will be compatible with this system. This unit will plug into separate connectors on the board, providing a reliable Bluetooth connection.

    How many miles could you get with your battery and the 3000W motor? Love the set up!

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment and your interest in our setup! We're glad you like the setup. However, it's important to note that the combination of our battery and the 3000W motor was primarily used to showcase the speed capabilities of our battery and controller. Our battery was originally spec'd for the stock motor and controller, but we wanted to demonstrate that it could push even faster speeds. In reality, when powering the stock motor and controller, the battery operates at a very low duty cycle, meaning it doesn't work as hard as it did in the demonstration. We've only run about 20 miles through this setup so far, and we haven't yet run through a full battery cycle. Based on the specifications of our battery (48V and 20A continuous output), if we were to run the battery at its full potential, it would likely only last about 30 minutes.

    Doesn’t it burn up the motor ?

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pushing more amps through the motor won't necessarily "burn it up". We've personally put over 200 miles on this setup while riding on flat ground without any issues. However, it's crucial to be mindful of heat buildup when pushing more amps through the motor. While increased amperage can produce more heat, it's essential to monitor the temperature and avoid putting excessive load on the motor and controller to prevent overheating the components.

    Amazing mod. Can you connect a pedal instead of a drift bar to activate the regenerative braking?

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can connect another pedal, similar to the throttle one, to activate regenerative braking. However, after testing, we decided against this option for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it would require either cutting a hole in your frame for the throttle or adding an adapter to mount the pedal onto the frame without cutting. Secondly, the latter option would position the pedal a couple of inches closer to the rider's body, resulting in a cramped cockpit and restricted foot movement. Therefore, we ultimately decided against pursuing this option.

    I had originally replaced the battery with a 48V but no change in speed with the battery replacement alone. I bought this mod and downloaded it today. I’m 235lbs and get 19mph. My daughter is 110lbs and flies on it. Huge difference in speed with the 48v battery. Now my daughter is able to keep up with a 20 mph scooter I use.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Adding a 48V battery to the stock, unmodified controller does provide more torque, but due to the speed limit applied in the controller, it tends to max out fairly quickly. We're glad to hear that you were able to enhance your experience by adding the speed flasher, which unlocks the full potential of the 48V battery with the stock modified controller. It's great to hear that both you and your daughter are enjoying the increased speed and performance.

    Whatever your mini lathe is sitting on is not very stable. Your lathe shakes whenever you touch it or use the tool post. Might be time to stiffen up the bench or table your lathe is sitting on.

    • @Blacklisted_Garage
      @Blacklisted_Garage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your keen observation. The lathe is actually bolted down onto a Husky tool box with semi-large caster wheels. While there may be some slight movement, it's worth noting that the tripod holding the camera is quite flimsy and tends to exaggerate any movement from the tool box. However, I'll certainly look into ways to stabilize the tool box without sacrificing the caster wheels. Your feedback is much appreciated!
